  • In this video, I’ll tackle the development history behind many aspects Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is widely known for, such as its origins, name, staff, mechanics, characters, difficulty, gameplay and story. It also talks about the core differences between Fire Emblem Gaiden and this game. Similar to the videos on Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem: Fates, this video focuses on how the classic story of Alm and Celica was remade as Echoes.

This game might not be as complex as others like Three Houses or Genealogy, but you can’t deny the love and care that was poured into it, from major overhauls with the story and why certain things happen, to tweaks to the gameplay to make it similar to Fates and Awakening while also trying to make it feel like the original. Not a perfect game, but it’s still a great remake.

It is my 3rd favorite game in the franchise (after genealogy and Thracia) and holds a special place in my heart as it was the fire emblem game I picked up during the first weeks of the pandemic and I was suffering from an injury at the time, after years of not playing one and made me fall in love with the franchise again. Good games don't necessary need complexity. Still, Valentia has one glaring problem and that's the simplistic map design. There's a lot of tactical complexity missing when armies start a battle almost at each other's toes. I consider this a bigger problem than the lack of town building, romancing or other missing superfluous feature present in the newest games. Also, archers can fire in melee?

I like how he made the cast look as a whole, they don't look like generic villagers or soldiers but they have this overall look that perfectly captures how their culture and time period in their world influences the way dress, look, and act of the battlefield so you can say "oh they came from this place around this time period, I can believe that". I greatly appreciate little details like that.

I think the one thing I loved the most about Gaiden/Echoes was how the dungeons and town exploring made this feel like an actual adventure. Most FEs are just "jackass starts war, prince goes to war, makes friends, wins." Gaiden/Echoes did have a war, but it didn't feel like one. The large amounts of monsters instead of just "Mass Produced Soldier A" might have balanced that out too though.

This is one of my favorite games of all time and definitely my favorite FE. If anyone is on the fence about the story and characters just look up the scene with Lukas and Fernand. As for the gameplay, a lot of people consider the map design bad but the maps and enemies made me feel like there were forces I had to overcome. It wasn't just PvE where the player always wins. The enemies could do things the player couldn't and breaching some of their defenses required committing fully and taking risks or risk being overwhelmed. I really felt like the underdog when entering Rigel due to the story and gameplay, and I really enjoyed myself.

    • @a.w.1820
      @a.w.1820 2 года назад +7

in addition, those risks and forces were softened by the turnwheel, meaning that although you still needed to strategize, a stray warp, crit, or overextension is not as punishing as a restart for any rather long map. for me, that further encourages the unique gameplay and strategies you described, which would be difficult to implement as a design on shorter and easier maps, rather than nullifying the point of classic mode.

It's impossible to quantify Love but I'm sure we instinctively feel when a game has been made with a lot of care, attention and emotional investment by the creators. A commercial product designed to follow trends and sell copies (even if it's objectively good) would be the opposite.

Shadows of Valentia was such a great little game. I really love after so many decades had built up, they pretty much threw that all away beyond a few things and let us play with the core mechanics of Gaiden that are so weird compared to all other games. I like all the add ons to the cast but felt it was too true to the original and not allow more to do with the cast having 1 or 2 support lines at most. That's where fire emblem gets me in building a cast I can learn to care for like awakening did.
I hope they remake genealogy of the holy war one day. If 3 houses can have such depth to it then we have the tools to expand on a political struggle sigurd went through and the timeline skip function for a second cast too.

Honestly, that ending scene where they show Mila's tree growing, but mention one tree for each god, was such a Wham Line. Because you realize that Mila's tree flourished and became absolutely massive by the time of Awakening...but Duma's burned, becoming the site of a volcano feared by those living near it, the Demon's Ingle. Even in the eternal slumber of death, Duma wanted to be nothing like Mila, and demanded strength of those who would dare approach him.
It was also that moment that made me realize that the map "Duma's Gate" was the same structure that became the Great Gate in Inigo's paralogue, and that's what made it really set in, that Alm's legacy was so massive and long-standing that man and nation over time literally became one-Valentia + Alm = Valm. And that nation lasted _all the way to the events of Awakening._ Say what you will about Marth being a Hero-King, _that_ is the definition of a legacy right there.

i honestly really loved echoes, it really made FE gaiden even better than before with the voice acting and especially the music
i still find it a bit of a shame they didn't keep the dragon's maw traps alm's party part of gaiden as i thought that was really cool for it.
i honestly feel that in regards to future echoes remakes maps, i think they'll likely keep genealogy the same, because every chapter has about 3-4 large castle fortresses to take, which is essentially a chapter within a chapter itself, and the super large maps make sense due to story(yled massacre for example) as its like an actual war.
however for echoes games like FE4 and 5(the ones everyone wants the most next to binding blade, i really hope for jugdral one day.), i really hope they fix some of the softlock flaws in genealogy and thracia.
like for FE4, they most definitely need to have a scene for "if quan and ethlyn live the yled massacre, defeating travant" and allow them to be recruitable in that event because it was possible in the original FE4, but caused a softlock if quan reached the castle because he wasn't recruitable
and for FE5, thracia, literally the only thing that needs fixing in FE5 is the softlock chapter where leif is locked up in a cell and mareeta and her allies come to free him. it should deff have the condition of "if any ally dies=game over" before leif is freed, then the condition reverts to if leif dies after his cell is unlocked.

I loved Echoes. While I may not like it as much as another title or two, I hold it very high regard as the passion poured into it shows. Despite my hangups from the first playthrough or so, I still fondly look back and want to play it again like others I've loved so much. But I am shy to recommend it to those new to the series as my hangup on maps during the story have some flops. But definitely not shy to share with some fun information of the characters. Glad to learn the exploration was a cut feature used in a later title. Rarely went down to the world in Fates My Castle, just checked in and out. The additions certainly made my experience a great one and I LOVE Fernand and Berkut

Been a Fire Emblem fan since 12 year old me discovered Sacred Stones on the GBA. Since then I've played every single Fire Emblem released in the west all the way through, and I have to say, Shadows of Valentia is literally my favorite, as far as story goes anyways. I actually have a hard time deciding between Valentia, 3H, and PoR, but these days I usually feel Valentia is my favorite. Alm and Celica are such amazing protagonists, their stories show their growth throughout the game. I think only 3H made me cry about as much as this game did. I just wish Alm and Celica were featured more among the main Fire Emblem protagonists.

Well to get the original experience, just imagine all the worst parts of Echoes and make them all way worse while having most of the cutscenes removed and that's pretty much the Gaiden experience...

@@V-Jes as someone who actually played Gaiden twice, I can ensure you this dude has no idea about the original game - game modes /design & gameplay differ vastly from Echoes. I get the whining obout the QOL stuff. it's a game from 1992 - surprise!

SOV was my first FE game and I enjoyed it a lot. Then I got Fates which isn't the same and not as fun in my opinion. 3 houses was good, I realize I like the freedom of moving around my character. Fates only let you do that in the tiny little home instance

I think echoes was the second FE I beat, got the game for my birthday pretty soon after it came out, didn’t put it down. Absolutely blew me away. It’s so funny thinking about all the things that felt revolutionary back then. dungeon crawling, weapon arts, full voice acting, the animations, the sprite work. I skipped fates, so going from awakening, it felt like I was playing the future.

I encourage everyone who hasn't read it yet to look up Nakanishi's interview about how much Gaiden meant to him and his father. It's really touching and explains why this game in particular has so much heart. It was truly a passion project.
(On a related note, I really can't stress enough how beautiful it is that this game remained so faithful to the original. Gaiden can seem like such a broken game, yet the director understood that "no, this game is GOOD actually!" and just by adding some tweaks to make game more fluid, boom, even the weird map designs and terrain bonuses make sense! What a king.)

Echoes was my first FE game, which I got because it was $20 at GameStop while Birthright was $40 and I was going to get Birthright, but I only had $20 (though I later got Birthright and wasn’t super fond of it). I absolutely loved it, and while that poison swamp map on Celica’s route took me thousands of tries and I actually missed two characters ( Alpha and that priest dude) AND I was so under leveled that I got soft-locked in the final boss, it still made me a Fire Emblem fan (Three Houses is my second favorite btw). I still haven’t beaten that final boss, but I love the game anyway!

It's fantastic what Echoes' remake did to Gaiden, I consider it one of the most solid written Fire Emblem overall.
The only glaring flaw(besides Faye's writing) is Celica's writing.
And no, I am not talking about her decision on giving her soul to the clearly shady smurf man, that makes passable sense in context because of Mila's spoiling the Zofians to heavily depends on the Gods and not think outside of that box.
What peeves me is them playing Celica as the "wise" one between her and Alm when it's pretty clear Alm hold the braincell here, being far more reasonable and diplomatic than her.
Celica is more... Mischievous and Headstrong? Willful? The kind of friend that sees that you are staring at the edge of the pool for who knows how long because you are hesitating for thinking that the water is maybe too cold and shoves you so you can get over it and take the goddam dip already?
It's weird to say this but FEH's Duo Valentine version did a far better job to showcase her positive traits in contrast to Alm than Echoes did.
Oh and bless Echoes for giving us Clive, he's so underrated, my favorite character, sad he doesn't have an alt yet in Echoes despite being arguably a Deutarogonist after Alm & Celica.

    • @nuibaba280
      @nuibaba280 2 года назад +2

Celica isn't played as brains. She's the more emotional and thoughtful of the two but they're both smart. Even in Gaiden: Alm is very competent and kind. But the remake and original had it where Alm tends to focus on combat with little regard to Valentia as a whole. He even actively denied the idea of Valentia as a whole needing a savior when Gray talked to him in Rigel. He refused to think that Rudolf had any good in him while Celica wanted to believe in the goodness of people.

Besides Mystery many Sequels/Remakes I think? Shadow of Valentia Echoes is our first Remake, Redesigns, new aspects and changes to the original.
Everyone has a personal opinion of which FE game deserved the next remake? In my Opinion it might depends on what game they are focusing on?
Genealogy has a unique Gen 1 and Gen 2 cast which could make a interesting story when remake which it could have show us events of the death of Gen 1 casts and many other tragedies, This one can have potential of massive redesigns from cipher and Feh arts.
Binding Blade or Blazing Blade can get a 2 in 1 or one of them gets a remake itself, if they do both they can do Hair colour changes to Binding Blade Children based off what Supports you give to which characters? like Eliwood and Ninian, Roy bloodline with Ninian would give him better stats and have a Blue streak line from his mother hair colour or a unique skill?
My last pick is Tellius which this game could have a big potential of Story telling adding new prologues and etc. They can add characters who never appeared in Path of Radiance but only in Radiant Dawn have both appears in both games in order to tell a story of what happen, Example with how Tormod and Muriam meet Vika.
Vika never appeared in POR but barely have any role in RD and lack of stats in the finale. they can fix many characters stats and add new features to balance each units, Tellius Remake should have a new story for characters you can't play as, like Zelgius and his backstory or Greil and the 4 Riders?
In perspective each of these games can get a amazing remake and have potential to resurrect the old Gen FE Games, Three Houses has brought back popularity of FE but having a Classic return to modern time can give new Fans have a taste of FE.
