- For years, people have been telling me I should do jiu-jitsu, so a little over a year ago, I did. Here are some thoughts on what I've learned.

I’d like to hear more about it especially how you train to get a synergistic effect from the two disciplines of Jiu Jitsu and Calisthenics.
Been training Jiujitsu for 6 years and I gotta say man, calisthenics and jiujitsu pair up so incredibly well.
Curious how so?
@@petemarqdadon this is 100% anecdote. it definitely depends on your game, but I found lifting weights actually made me worse at jiujitsu for a few reasons:
1. If I wasn’t 100% diligent about mobility work, I got stiff quickly and guard play became more difficult.
2. Recovery needs for lifting just seem greater for some reason. I understand this doesnt necessarily just make sense, but its my experience.
3. Found that as I got stronger with weights I moved worse, was more clunky. Opposite experience with calisthenics.
Once I started moving myself through space, rather than moving an object through space, everything in bjj felt smoother and easier to do.
"I get to suck at something again"...I love the spirit of this!!! Growth is beautiful!!
I'm cool hearing more about the Jiu-Jitsu. You're good at finding the lesson in whatever you're doing, and it's always worth hearing.
Yes if possible please talk about how to exercise to stay in shape for Jiujitsu. What you eat before . Gi or No Gi. Do you keep a journal. How stay safe rolling with young guns. How to mentally stay up for sparring And training. Do you like warm ups for class. FYI also white belt starts year ago. @49. Lost some weight but still need to do more.
Hey, hey, hey, Al! Yes, more jujitsu, please!
Martial arts are awesome to combine with calisthenics awesome.
You could also talk about High intensity training techniques applied to calisthenics..
I'd like to hear more on this. Thanks!
Really pleased to hear about this Al, good for you! When we lose the beginners mindset, we start struggling to find new things to do and new ways to truly challenge ourselves.
For me, it was deciding to learn to play guitar. Now a year and a half later, I am still dreadful. Truly terrible! But I enjoy it. What humbled me about it was I realised that it was the first time I'd ever tried something new to me that I couldn't already do in some way or another. In fact, I knew nothing of music and never played an instrument before and when I bought the guitar, it was the first time I'd ever touched one! Truly humbling to go back to the Beginners Mind..
Al, would love to hear more about the jiu jitsu!
I love this! Happy for you Al
Always great advice Al
Loved this! Congrats on the new venture Al. Excited for you.
Great video man, thank you so much real life value stuff hidden there
I appreciate you sharing. Please keep sharing your journey. Also, I enjoy hearing about your philosophy on certain topics, so please continue to share your thoughts as you experience things.
Good stuff AL! Nice to see you "Still working out" 😉 💪🏼
I've been following your work for probably 15 years almost and I always appreciate your encouragement. Keep up the good work brother!
Calisthenics and bjj go hand in hand. It will help tremendously with your game and more importantly, protect your joints and other areas of the body that can receive damage due to the high demands of the gentle art!
Would love to hear more about jiu jitsu in your videos!
Curious how does bjj help protect your joints
@@petemarqdadonhe’s saying calisthenics will help protect his joints when doing BJJ
I’m 52 & recently retired from the military, so hearing about your transition to another sport helps me. Thanks, Al. 😁👍
You are such a great trainer the beginner mind is such a great lesson I’ve been watching you for 2 years now and your never cease to impress
That is amazing content!
Would love to hear more about your experience in BJJ
Al, you could post a video of you doing a paint-n-sip and I would still watch it. Really missed the longer vids man! Keep being amazing!
Yes more
Share your journey!
Hey hey Al! Happy to hear you’ve found jiu Jitsu! Been finding inspiration in your videos for quite a while now. I’ve been training calisthenics for ten years and bjj for 8 and I gotta agree, the two work phenomenal together. The strength you unlock through calisthenics transfers over to bjj so well! Keep the bjj videos
Coming.
Definitely would like to hear about your first days and weeks starting bjj
Al this was such a great vid! 👏🏼 Really enjoyed the longer deeper dive into your philosophy, especially as a near middle age guy similar to myself. We all need to embrace sucking at new stuff because it keeps life interesting to keep learning and improving. I would love to hear about how you hybrid train both calisthenics and Jujitsu. Also, has your bro Danny showed any interest in martial arts? I bet he would love it
Would love more videos on your bjj journey. Ive been doing bjj for almost 18 years now and been one of the best things ive ever had in my life. I still learn new things all the time. I hope you keep at it. I also think you will find that calisthenics go really well for bjj training
i'm a former powerlifter from 50 years ago. i started training calisthenics about 4 years ago. i'm a beginner and i understand what you're saying here, al. i'll also be 70 next month and i'm grateful and fortunate to be able to do what i'm doing. trying new things=growth.
Yes--more please. I've also thought about Jiu Jitsu as well.
Yes sir bring on the Jiu-Jitsu talk. And congratulations on starting your BJJ learning at 40.
Thats so cool AL! I started BJJ about 4 years ago and I'm having a blast.
Right on!
Would love to hear more about your BJJ journey, how your calisthenics training has correlated with it and if you changed anything in your training since starting bjj!
I’m a purple belt in bjj and a calisthenics lover, but definitely found it hard to mix the two to keep my aesthetic goals
Nice!!!
Great topic!! YES!! Please do talk about your new path of training BJJ!! I also started doing BJJ in my mid forties last year as well (which I started to supplement my skillset for my occupation) and I think it pairs well with bodyweight calisthenics!! Keep sharing! Also, are you doing just No-Gi or are you doing Gi BJJ as well?
Maintaining a'White belt mentality' on life in general is one of foundational goals. Thanks Al.
Hi Al,
I’m 54 (55 in September) and in November last year my 10 year old son and I started practicing Karate at our local dojo.
We have just achieved our first grading together, you wouldn’t believe how chuffed and proud I am for both of us (especially my son).
We have a long term goal of getting our Black Belt together, and as you are aware that is just the beginning.
So please, I would love to hear more about your journey too,
Good Luck !
I've personally been teetering back and forth with starting some form of MMA training, but the fear of starting something completely new like this has kept me back. I would love to hear your experience!!
Would love to hear how you are combining calisthenics training with bjj!
BJJ was a huge stress relief for me until being diagnosed with MS ten years ago. Now that I'm losing weight and feeling better I'd like to get back to it again.
started jits at 43 as a very unhealthy overweight guy with several serious health issues plus drugs, alcohol, garbage diet etc. now 49 and substance free for years, weight train consistently with a high fat/protein diet, and in optimal health. body hurts all the time but but illness and disease free. jits truly did give me a second lease on life. wife and son train also;)
I think it would be interesting to explore the overlapping points of JJ and calisthenics.
As a former judoka I would love to hear your thoughts on your learning process, especially being such an authority in calisthenics.
Because, keep in mind that JJ is another form of bodyweight training.
I’m more of a roll around with the girls than the boys
😅
Easier to pin down
lol
Cheers bud 👍
I really enjoyed this video and would like to see moee
Hey, Big Al! Long time no see! Here's a suggestion: why not also discuss Ginastica Natural? It could be considered the "Kata" of BJJ. It's also a good complement to the Calisthenics training.
Starting woodworking at 58, working on my 1998 model truck myself as new things break, trying to grow vegetables in the desert, starting a new career at 60. Dang! I wish I knew anything other than a beginners mindset!
Hey hey hey Al! I’ve been following you for a looong time. Done some of your books. My name is also Al, so just so you know, that’s what first attracted me to your books jaja.
I completely share every word you said to the T. I am also right in my mid forties and started jiujitsu about four months ago. I have been embracing it all, but had gotten some injuries along the way, people are out there throwing each other around pretty hard. Right now I’m dealing with a knee injury from all the weight and knee bending.
I’m wondering about your injuries? How have you done so far?
Thanks 🙏 keep rocking.
Hey hey hey, Al! Thanks for the comment! I did get injured in the beginning. I’ll keep your suggestions in mind for a future video.
Calisthenics + Jits! Oss!
Welcome to the cult...I mean club brother! It is one of the most physically and mentally demanding yet rewarding activity I ever have started!
Hey Al, I'd love to have you on my podcast to talk about jiujitsu and calisthenics!
Has your strength training changed now that you are training martial arts? I'm interested in how strength training and mobility has helped your BJJ journey.
They're all great, whatever you want to talk about.
Osss👊🙏
Feel free! I'd love to hear your thoughts on jujitsu.
Al, there’s a lot of jujitsu content out there already. BJJ has already become quite mainstream in the martial arts world; some say that it is now going through the commercialization phase that Karate went through after it became popular because of the Karate Kid movie (with Mr. Myagi). Actually MMA in general has already become quite mainstream. The UFC is already old news; One Champ is the hottest thing right now. So if you start diving into this topic, everyone and their mother would have an opinion about jiujitsu, or about this technique or that technique, or even this martial art or that martial art, or this self defense system or that self defense system. So unless you are as interested about this topic as you are about the topic of working out, it’s best not to start going down that rabbit hole.
That said, videos about your experience going from a person of authority & a teacher of something to being a student again (especially as someone of middle age where it’s typically more challenging to set aside your ego at that age) using learning jiujitsu for the first time (& actually sticking to it) as an example, and sharing all the struggles you went through trying to learn this stuff, i think that topic could be quite interesting.
Hey hey hey, Al! Thanks for the comment! I’ll keep your suggestions in mind for a future video.
How do you get such subtitles?

Thanks. Do you teach in prisons?
Safe bjj journey bro. Be smart.
More bjj content👍
It looks like you just like wrestling burly men. No judgment here Al. 😄❤

Yeah you embraced you inner gay self... Now you enjoy being a lfamer...
