    Al, your videos keep getting better and better. Sound's nicely normalized now, and you're still delivering the same fantastic advice and tutorials as you always have, with no bullshit time padding or other nonsense that others use. Always a fan, sir! I know this one's a bit of an oldie, but I hope Sandy didn't cause you and yours too much of a problem. Happy holidays!

    I have been weight training for a couple of years now, but recently I've incorporated more bodyweight stuff like pullups, muscle-ups, dips and pushup variations and, if I'm honest, I much prefer the bodyweight stuff... It's just more fun and it gives you a wide variety of exercises to perform if you do both bodyweight and weight training. I am now learning more advanced stuff like front and back levers and just recently progressed to the muscle-up. Give it a try and I'm sure you'll love it :)

    How strong do shoulder's have to be for back lever?

  • @Guishan_Lingyou
    @Guishan_Lingyou 11 лет назад

    The problem is probably a combination of wrist and shoulder lack of mobility. Work on thoracic extension, lat stretches, and there are lots of good wrist mobility exercises. (eg check gold medal bodies video on it). Meanwhile, if you put your hands on couch, or a park bench or something else handy, it will take the strain off your wrists and help develop the mobility needed for full bridge.

    You also can do a deadlift upside down with a bar. Start with a leg raise until your feet touch the bar then continue the movement until your body is all straight.

    I like yor stuff and your being honest about nothing being able to truly replace the deadlift. That being said i did bodyweight for 3 years, lot of your stuff and i have been lifting weights now for around 8 months and got 3x stronger than i did in all those years bodyweight training. There really is nothing like the deadlift...

      @user-cn4nb1yb2n 10 лет назад +1

      hey, were you also able to perform one hand pull ups or front levers or muscle ups or some advanced moves? im really curious to know

    • @respeezy
      @respeezy 10 лет назад

      Muscle ups where the only ones of these that i managed to achieve, i tribute that partially to my own stupidity (diet wise). After you do your first muscle up you realize you dont need much strength and its mostly technique,

    • @Solden_ghower
      @Solden_ghower 10 лет назад +6

      well best way to get stronger and bigger is to mix bodyweight exercises and weightlifting exercises. u can do pull ups, weighted pull ups, rows and deadlifts in your workouts.. i don't see why people would decide for either bodyweight or weights

    • @JeromeONeill
      @JeromeONeill 10 лет назад

  • @rohitchaoji
    @rohitchaoji 10 лет назад

    The video is titled "Bodyweight Deadlift Alternatives". It doesn't mean that you should replace powerlifting/olympic lifting with these. Sometimes, people don't have access to a gym or a barbell, so this is useful. For example, when I am away from home and feel the need to work out, this is a good alternative.

  • @paulbruce5414
    @paulbruce5414 10 лет назад

    When doing the back bridge, is your lumbar spine extending a lot? In a deadlift (and with any exercise, really), you want to keep your thoracic spine extended, but your lumbar spine neutral.

    • @justinamswta9821
      @justinamswta9821 9 лет назад +2

      In a proper bridge, the lumbar spine is not hyperextended. Anyone who finds themselves over-extending their lower back should revisit their technique- maybe work on upper back and hip flexibility.

    I think you could find a rock (if not buy a kettle bell or two) - you wouldn't need 100lbs to make that single leg deadlift really interesting. I feel like loading up legs kinda requires some weight - possibly some plyos instead. And that all the pulling seems to be down instead of like a row. The kettlebells could be used for that as well. Just my opinion after 4 years of regular bodyweight and 30 years of occassional lifting in the gym. Oh, yeah, also, the front lever seems to simulate some of the deadlift, but your legs aren't loaded up at all. Arms and lower back are going crazy though. Other than these observations, I definitely prefer bodyweight - it's just more fun - more engaged - uses more of your body. Core gets seriously trained as an adjunct - not necessarily as a specific focus, e.g. push ups vs. bench press, holding your body straight. It's also outside and free, and while these benefits are tangential, they're significant.

    I can do a full back bridge relatively easily, but I don't feel it in my hamstrings at all.. I feel it in the glutes and lower back, but nothing in the hamstrings. If I contract my hamstrings, they cramp severely (my hamstrings are quite strong and flexible tho?). Any help?

    As a matter of fact, injuries can occur (and this is coming from a fan of calisthenics). I've injured cuff rotators twice and both those times were during pullups (overtraining and overtight shoulders). It's no big deal and you still can find many opportunities to train with such minor injuries until they're healed (in fact, you can speed up the recovery by other, even more basic bodyweight exercises). And look at gymnasts - how many injuries they got in their training sessions. Intensity is key

    • @ladysmanOO7
      @ladysmanOO7 5 лет назад

      Did you not warm up and go at it full speed? i went back to calisthenics after a year or more of gymmin cuz i found myself doing compound exercises that i could do with my weight and i stopped bench-pressing because i would feel an injury coming on my left rotator cuff and left elbow from a previous injury i got from letting a partner hype me up to bench more than i ever have before after just one set of benching and not being properly warmed up. i have never felt that doing push ups i just make changes in TUT and tempo to progress.

    Lotta people ask how to do bridges if their wrists hurt. I'm on same boat dudes, fucked mine with heavy barbell curls. Solution is simple, do them on knuckles, same way you'd do pushups if your wrists hurt. I prefer to do mine on soft mat, no need to strain your skin.

  • @jlushefski
    @jlushefski 3 года назад

    These suggestions are as good as can be, but unfortunately there really isn't a good alternative. It's nearly impossible to get the kind of back development (particularly spinal erectors) one can achieve with barbell pulling variations (deadlifts or olympic lifts). For a simple visual example, compare the back musculature of an olympic gymnast to an olympic weightlifter of a lower weight category. The gymnast will have well developed biceps, shoulders, and lats, but the spinal erectors and some other back muscles will be quite underdeveloped relative to the weightlifter (to be fair, weightlifters are at the extreme end of back development). Pistols are okay for legs/glutes, but once you get good the reps will have to be quite high.

    • @jakemccoy
      @jakemccoy Год назад +1

      Getting developed like that takes time away from practicing calisthenics. Why do weightlifters think everybody wants massive development?
