I wrote a RUBBISH song, and then my video shoot about it went very wrong - so here's a little ditty on how it's OK to make bad art, and how done is better than perfect.

There's this fallacy it's really easy to fall into that everything you create needs to be your personal best, and that creating stuff is some sort of linear upward curve from meh to mid to masterwork, and that just isn't how creating or people work. Sometimes a work goes through a long ugly duckling phase and you've just got to trust the process until it becomes the beautiful thing you imagined, and sometimes the pieces just aren't doing the things you wanted them to and it's okay to call it a day, delete your art, have a rest, and come back and do something you're happier with later. And I think it's honestly really helpful as creative folks that we share these "this didn't end up working" moments because it's really easy to fall prey to the sad thoughts when it happens. But it happens to all of us, and it's fine. Much love x

Thanks for the encouragement to keep going, find another way, put it down to experience. At art school on a bad day one of my friends would say well I learnt something, whereas I'd be beating myself up for being cr*p. Your way and my friends way is better!
It's a common feeling, Neil! I think the more we do things, the less important each one is - this is one song of many I've written and I don't usually think they suck, so I'm very happy to move on and see what the next one sounds like :)

I really identify with this. I go through a cycle of hating what I write as I'm writing it, and beating myself up about how shit it is, how shit I am, how shit everything is..... EVERY TIME.
I only seem to LIKE what I've written after a month or two goes by and I've forgotten about it and done a bunch more work since.
Then I'll go back and watch the video for it and be like, "Wow - this is pretty good! Why was I so hard on myself?" 🤔

Oh wow yeah, I can empathise with that. I listened to a great episode of one of my fave podcasts today, part of which was referring to Cal Newport's latest book "Slow Productivity". There's a part in that where he talks about how his brain starts saying the book he's currently working on won't be great, so he should just quit. He says he's learned to tell his brain that this book is going to be a finished book, and the next one can be the great one. I love that!
Any thoughts on making a mug with "Make art, good or bad" on it?
I do have a problem with finishing tracks, sometimes even starting them in the first place, so a mug like that would help me on two fronts. 1. To stop overthinking it...or playing the procastinettes, as I like to call it 💃, and 2. Because you can never drink too much tea.

Pre planning to write does not work you want to write when creativity hits for me that's anywhere between 4pm and 7am 😂 insomnia is Soo much fucking fun haha I've just written my 29th song since Jan 2023 and I'm amazed that they have all worked out haven't had to throw anything or re-write but I changed a word here and there or added to the lyrics

I would argue no song can be objectively s**t because art is not objective.
Also ones person 'subjective' s**t is anothers 'subjective' manure out of which beautiful things grow.
I mean if the artist isn't satisfied with it, that's a bigger blocker at the start of the process.
Have a soundcloud account where my shit songs are. I’ve done it under the RUDEBOY moniker. There’s even a hip hop song and it’s absolute balderdash and it revels in the fact that is brutally shit. The thing is failure is an important part of the creative process of songwriting and just like Loudon Wainwright III said ‘if you can’t write a good song, write a shit song instead’. I am proud of my greatest shits.
