Hagler took his best shots ! This guy was phenomenal and ruthless in the ring and he fought aaron Pryor at 18 years old another dangerous fighter ! Man that era had some killers back then !
Tommy Hearns. My favorite fighter of all time. Back in the day in Detroit we called him the Cobra because of that left hand of his. He would just snipe guys with that jab and drop that right hand behind and man whew! That was the end of the fight. Then Ring magazine put him on the cover. They dressed him up in an old fashioned ganster pin stripe suit and gave him a Tommy gun for the photo shoot. Then overnight he became the Hit Man Thomas Hearns!!! What a champion. I idolized that man when I was a kid. Went to his training camp in northern Michigan when I was 8 years old and watched him work the heavy bag with Manny Stewart.
Jeffrey Haefner that right would drop like Thor's hammer
Jeffrey Haefner You won`t get another Hearns out of Detroit! I heard on youtube vid it`s becoming a dangerous ghost city like Escape from New york!
Hearns outboxed Leonard twice.
+Skinny Mack In the first fight Leonard showed great skill when bullying Hearns on the inside and didn`t get hit as much as he did in the 2nd fight.
Leonard was still behind on all the cards at the time of the stoppage and it was arguably an early stoppage . If they fought 10 times I think Hearns wins 7, especially if Hearns doesn't weigh in underweight like he did in the first fight.
Thomas Hearns is a great guy. Look how honest he is . He is as great a person as he was a fighter, and he was one of the best. All those superfights and giving the fans everything he had in his heart.
Mark Andrews
We said!
Definitely. He even gave most of his money away. So much he ended up selling some of his possessions.
Just what I was going to say
When he dropped Durran, I couldn’t believe it, that was one of the meanest M Fers on the planet
Thomas Hearns is the hardest hitting welterweight I've ever seen...when he annihilated Pipino Cuevas I feared for S.R.L., my all time favorite fighter...his knockout power was frightening for someone at that weight...2 all time greats, for any era & yes Hearns did win the second fight...so happy I grew up watching boxing in the late 70's & 80's...much respect to 2 great champions!!
I give you props, you remember what he did to Cuevas.
@@JAMES-wl2pd thanks bro
Yup, I watched Hearns stone Pipino Cuevas with My Step Dad back in the day and he became my favorite fighter. Still is to this day. Dude left it all in the ring every time out, kill or be killed. Never a boring Tommy Hearns fight.....Right hand he stopped Duran with was the hardest punch I've ever seen landed, in a fight between two Hall of Famers. Looked like Duran ran into a downed power line and 2000 volts.
Tells you how tough SRL was. Even in the second fight, Hearns was on top and gave SRL hell, he never gave up and battled through it and even nearly had him at the end. They were part of the fab 4 for a reason. The only time and never again will we see this in boxing.
Sugar took that right hand away from Tommy only way he was gone win.Tommy hearns and Wilder weapon 4 a right hand!
I love the respect these legend great fighters have for each other , they are still annoyed by each other but they are in eternal love with each other
the great tommy hearns
Hearns your my damned hero..I grew up in Detroit 26 years and watched you with my grandfather and watching you absolutely embodied the spirit of Detroit. Never give up, always keep fighting until you cannot fight anymore...and you always stepped in that ring to follow through with that.
Mike Epps should play Tommy Hearns they talk alike lol
He sounds like Ali of the early 1980s
Tommy would have destroyed Floyd Mayweather Jr and Sr.
In the same day
Oh yeah Floyd would be dead meat...that defensive hide and strike wouldn't work on Hearns...or Leonard...or Hagler...or Duran etc.
Agree...
Unfortunately true. Hearns would certainly outscore him with his height and reach advantage or he would knock Mayweather out. Mayweather didn't have the power to overwhelm Hearns and knock him out.
@@larryjohnson2306 The "Hitman/ Motor City Cobra" would have knocked him out with in three rounds.
💙 Still ready to fight. I love it. I like both boxers. This was a nice interview 👍🏾. Thank you.
Hearns vs Mayweather ??? Come on now, I give contemporary fighters their due, but dont go matching up todays cry babies with the Scarface calibre assassins from the '80s.
Pulsonar 😂 Floyd could win tho and how are u going to call them crybabies do u box it’s a difficult sport so any real good boxer is definitely not a crybaby 😂
@@Kevin-zj9rn Just stop with the emoji's. Just stop.
Peter Griffin I used the same emoji twice🤦🏽♂️😐☺️🤭🤨💥🤔😄🍰😂😟😘😒😟😘 shut yo ass up
Splitzs I was a martial artist and boxer in the 90s. The expressions I use are relative, and I 100% stand by what I originally said.
irish mickey Correct ...’ Hearns would jab is head off’ ... and follow with a sledgehammer right to close the shop for the night.
When Hearns was in his prime, I never really liked him (as a fighter). But as the years went on and I saw just what a class person he is, very gracious and humble, never trying to make bad comments about other boxers, I became a big fan of his. He's as legendary outside the ring as he was in it!
The Hitman a boxing LEGEND my favourite all time boxer loved watching him fight
Same exact thing Holifield said when asked about Tyson and Foreman.
I watched these guys fight and to see them together now acting like brothers this is beautiful two of the classiest atheletes of my lifetime
great stuff
"Believe in yourself, Don't doubt yourself, Only believe in what you can do and Go and Take Care of Business."
Tommy Hearns.
A great fighter. Nothing but respect for this guy, he's also hilarious!
Good job hearns they tried to make u bash floyd
+Eldridge Alcorn He doesn't need to bash Floyd. Floyd will never be close to what Thomas Hearns is. He might have more money. He may have won more times. But Thomas Hearns' pedestal is miles above whatever they decide to put "Track Star Floyd" on.
+Daniel Mendoza
Haha Floyd= dance dance revolution
These cats were really trying to get Tommy to say something Reckless about Floyd smh
Daniel Mendoza L
I remember coming up in the streets of Detroit I remember seeing Tommy all the time at the gym before he became who he was he was cool man layback just like how he is now, having fun with the rest of the guys he was young as well.
Sugar Ray Leonard is the better fighter P4P, but I think Tommy Hearns is simply a match-up nightmare for Floyd. His length, use of his jab, as well as the threat of his powerful overhand right is enough to beat Floyd.
Floyd was said to have the hardest time against southpaws and body punchers and Tommy is neither, but I truly believe him to have the right boxer-puncher skills to beat Floyd. The only potential downfall for Hearns is his suspect chin, but Hearns got TKO'd by SRL in the 14th round (not w/in 12), beat Roberto Duran in 2, and also beat a prime Pipino Cuevas (who beat 11 of his 12 opponents by knockout) in 2 rounds, so I don't think Hearns would have a problem with Floyd's power.
With Hearns you need to have enough punching power to earn his respect. If you let him dominate the fight and get too confident its game over. Floyd doesn't have that, it would be very hard for him to survive 15 rounds
@@Alex-trl That's how I see it. I never saw Floyd having to take it inside and brawl in order to win (the way Leonard did against Hearns) once he got to Welterweight. I see Floyd trying to stay outside of Hearns' range in order to box and counter but Hearns' length would be too troublesome for Floyd.
Cant believe anyone would think Floyd Mayweather would even stand a chance against Hearns , he struggled to beat a washed up De la Hoya , Hearns would smash him to pieces
Very true. Actually, Mayweather was in worse shape after the DelAhoya fight, swelling around the eyes, and wouldn't take a rematch.
Struggles so hard that he beat him. De la hoya faded in the end as always.
The Golden era of the 80's. Boxing was special back then. Big fights, Classic matchups that we are not to see the likes of again. Good to see that Tommy and Ray are still friendly ravels.
What he did to Roberto Duran gave me nightmares as a child. lol
That right hand would've put any heavyweight to sleep.
Literally. Hell, that right hand would put jason vorhees, michael myers, and terminator to sleep lol.
Pound for pound, the hardest single punch in boxing history.
All About Boxing
Except Hagler.........
Talked to Tommy at Detroit airport a few times over the years on his way to a fight. He was always down to earth& cordial as if we were neighbors who just saw each other the day before. I'll always remember how big his hands& first are, how laid back&friendly he is& how big he is when you're next to him. Haha, a great guy in my book, tho I'm saddened by how his speech has gotten over the years.
Love to see Tommy and Ray together. They both look good.
lol i love this interview! Hearns is sounding kind of punch drunk but he still answers the questions coherently.
Tommy sounded kinda punchdrunk even back in the 80s.
I love Tommy Hearns, what a legend, so much heart you can’t even compare it or measure it
this was great
Tommy hearns is one of my hero's. I have always been tall and slim like Tommy since a kid and I was ashamed of it. I remember when I saw Tommy first fight he made me feel like Superman! Him and Roy Jones and Ali are why I picked up a pair of gloves
Leonard was a far better boxer than Hearns, and had better movement, and Ray
also defeated Hagler, who dominated Hearns, and knocked him out cold. Leonard
was by far the best welterweight to ever set foot in a boxing ring. He also had
knockout power in both hands.
Leonard was a slightly better boxer but that wasnt evident (and couldnt ever be evident) between them. Styles make fights - and in two fights (actually also when they were younger and sparring at kronk gym), tommy outboxed ray MASTERFULLY in every round that wasnt a slugfest. Actually you can absolutely make a case for hearns skills: can you name a boxer that never been outboxed in his career? Hearns is one name. And he fought imo in the golden age of boxing. Outboxing a prime undefeated young super technical champion like virgil hill at 175lbs (wayyyyy away from his original weight) where tommy didnt have the reach advantage he always had before, (ofcourse hill was also quicker) hill defended his title 11 times before... Ray leonard is not one of them. Was outboxed on several fights (most past his prime - but again, hearns was over his prime when he owned hill at 175).
Even ray with his sublime skills could not defeat tommy by outboxing him. Against tommy - you brawl with courage or you lose. The way i see it - tommy hearns, as respected as he is, still underated. Not mccallum or benitez underated, but still underated. People dont give him respect or remember his INSANE boxing skills. His power came only when he turned pro... in the amateurs he had 10 percent ko ratio.... maybe less, but he won 95 percent of his fights. He was a monster boxer.
Tommy reminds me of Ali speeches where he exhibited early stages of parkinsons. I really hope he stays healthy.
Totally agree on his speech. Either that or he's mentally very slow ?
Tommy goes to my church and his wife was my children church leader
liar
You're blessed man! I grew up watching this man box. He epitomises what boxer should be. Respect!
Tommy has class inside & outside the ring. What a true champion.
Tommy nailed it, box em! People has this misconception that in order to beat Floyd you have to get inside, throw lots of punches, rough em up, hit em behind the head, hit em low, give a few headbuts, then throw an occasional knee. Nooo! That's not gonna work against Floyd! This IS boxing! You gotta outbox Floyd to beat him.
Of course Hearns can say box him,but not many welter's in this age have Hearns 78 inch reach or his speed.
so in other words outbox an outboxer, do you have any idea the amount ski, technique and speed it would take to outbox Mayweather, for the whole fight? maybe for a few rounds he adapts he adjust, I would have love to see such a skill boxer that could completely outbox mayweather
I've only seen highlights of Floyd JR, but everyone I've seen fight him, they play offense.
If someone took the approach of defense, and let Floyd come to you, I think he'd really struggle with that. Because he use to defending and catching people that way. Let him come to you, let him hit you, and then take your shots.
But at Mike Tyson once said. Everyone has a plan until they get hit.
Lmao "Aye Ray I got 60 million". I would play Tommy in the Sugar Ray movie
Kronk gym sparring took its toll on his brain man
I can understand what he says but yes, very slurred speech but Tommy had some absolute wars in the ring. His last fight was 2006. So yeah that's some decades getting your head punched in.
Maybe.
But that was the era he was from.
Tough.
Mean.
What a legend Hearns is... great guy 💪
They need a Fab Four movie on the rivalry between these fighters.
my fav fighter #7 in my top 10 list. he is such an amzing guy, too!!
Beautiful fighters these two were
Hearns vs Paul Williams is a good fantasy match up
Hearns by KO within 2 rds...
Hearns reach was just stupid 78 that's heavyweight reach
Theres reach n theres knowing how to fight at long range, Tommy had both.
He probably has the best lead hand in the history of boxing, his jab is up there with Ali & Holmes, his lead hook is up there with Roy Jones but Ive never seen anyone with both on the the level Tommy Hearns has, then theres the way he would stiff arm opponents with it n control their positioning, n we aren't even gonna talk about how he set up his monstrous right hand with it.
Yes Tommy Hearns had reach but he knew how to use it, Hearns was a master boxer.
Not even Mike Tyson had a more scarier death stare then Tommy hearns
Truth
The 2 Legend's of boxing
un grande .uno de los cuatro fantasticos de los 80
lol @ sugar rays 15 second cameo
first time i seen him interviewed and i dont know why i expected him to be one of these really angry scary persona boxers, but he seems a nice guy
This Tommy is A real Heroe Fighter He shows top class against Duran Haggler and Sugar ray Tommy is the man with the steel fists hammering you all down the Proud Symbol of Detroit.
Tommy and Ray! Two of the best!
My respects for those two legendary fighters. I did enjoy those times boxing was not a joke back then.😆
U have 2 love the HITMAN! It's great him and SRL r cool.Love'em both.
Hearns was the scariest boxer ever, even more so than Tyson or 70s Foreman. That stare before a fight would have reduced me to jelly if I'd been on the receiving end before a fight. I admired any man who could step in a ring with Tommy Hearns.
bogus money Hearns was the scariest boxer ever? Even more so than Tyson? Exactly WTF are you smoking? Whatever it is, it's making you highly delusional! Smfh!
Liston, Foreman, Tyson. People were scared to death of them. But Sonny had people shaking at the knees and fainting during the National Anthem!
The Spy I think tyson was more feared cause he would break your body but people were afraid of Liston cause he'd actually kill you
Legend is a very small word to describe Thomas Hearns. The guy was a world class boxer and he is an amazing human being. Thanks Tommy!!! God Bless You Always. 🙏❤️🙏
I second that
Tommy you are a legend
You hardly find ex boxer who doesn't slur in speech
Am I the only one who thinks SRL here bears a striking resemblance to Julio Caesar Chavez with a tan???
Hearns KO of Duran was closest to murder in a ring ever seen, how Duran continued a successful career after that into his 50s I will never know. Duran should be called 'Hands and Head of stone'
boxing took it's toll on the Hitman ......but i still love the guy!
Wat else was he gonna do ?
Become a nuclear scientist ?
Yes Joseph!!
So this is the legendary master boxer who was the inspiration and basis of Mashiba.. Thomas Hearns was feared back then, he is still feared now.. i have all the respect for Mr. Thomas Hearns.
Who is Mashiba ?
Tell us the story so we can relay it back to Tommy.
@@SPIDERM0OSE Fictional character from a manga/anime called "Hajime no Ippo"
no way hearns lost second fight to leanord. blind and wicked judges
Reconozco a Tommy Hearns !! Cómo un Gran Guerrero y un gran Campeón !! Maywather no tendría suerte con este boxeador !! Que suerte tuve de verlo en mi vida peleando!! Saludos de Argentina 🇦🇷💪
tommy is a class act...legend
I have a lot of admirations for my idoles,Ray Hearns,Hagler,... they don't put down other opponents.
Hit Man Respect
Tommy the "HITMAN" Hearns!
Hearns's height and reach would've given Floyd some problems. Hearns is a class act.
Hearns always fought off balance with his left down. I'm surprised that steward couldn't correct that.. might have gone undefeated.
Tommy had given coaches of Mayweather opponents a good point obviously they never saw this video! Floyd Mayweather used to win some of his fights on counter-punching but Tommy Hearns just gave you a scenario if you keep him Out Of Reach then he can't counterpunch if you're scoring he cannot counterpunch from a distance cuz you can't punch was not there to hit
So sad to hear tommy so punch drunk. But boy, what a legend. Hearns, Ray and Hagler. Thanks for the entertainment back in the day. Legends!!
From what I understand it's purely a "motor control" thing with his speech, caused by boxing yes, but his mind seems as sharp as ever. I.e. it's a speech impediment that gives a false impression of his mental faculties, least I hope so. Gave us so many exciting fights but I do remember wishing he would call it a day at the end of his career.
Legend!
I love these guys, nothing but class acts
Tommy is a legend he is one of best boxer ever his boxing is underrated he out box Benitez and Ray Leanard....He ask him about fighting Mayweather he said that he would keep him at the in of his jab now if Benitez and Ray Leanard couldn't out box then guess what Mayweather couldn't either ....
..
Que grandes estos di que eran guerreros
Peak Hearns in the ring looked like someone prepared to murder a human that night.
Hearns and Leonard beat Mayweather jr imho.
Tommy is as cool as they come.
TboneNYC10, great fighter, dynamite right hand, glass chin.
TboneNYC10 I agree 100%
Not only would Ray & Tommy beat Mayweather, so would Alexis Arguello, Aaron Pryor, at jr welterweight if he dared to try jr. Middleweight in that era John Mugabi, Julian Jackson, Terry Norris, even Pernell Whitiker. Lightweights Julio Cesar Chavez, even his uncle Roger at lightweight would give him fits.
The talent pool in the 80s lightweight to Jr. Middleweight was so much deeper than when he fought it's no comparison. If he fought in his dad's era no way he's undefeated.
No doubt
Much love big Tommy
One of the fab 4 or magnificent 5 if you include Wilfred Benitez, these guys all fought each other in their respective prime! Shame about fighters today!! Waiting for fighters to get old and shopworn before fighting them! Mayweather made a career from that! Pacqiau Oscar Mosley all well past their prime! These guys were different breed.. as for hearns vs mayweather lol 😂 that’s funny! It’s not even competitive! Hearns never ever had problems with technical boxers, because he was so tall and had great left jab and excellent technical skills himself! At 6”2 he was as tall as most heavyweights! At 147,154,160 even 168 in his prime nobody beats him in today’s era! I think floyd would be an easy fight for him, he had problems with brawlers if anything! Technical boxers he handled easily, leonard Benitez hill he outboxed all of these guys
Brilliant !
You know you're old when you call Floyd a young man 😂
I cannot see Mayweather fighting the hit man and not falling
Mr Hearns is legend..When it came to boxing no one could out box him..He was tall and he would keep them at the end of that jab,,,He out boxed Learnard and Bentize..Floyd never fought a men like Hearns..Hearns was better then Floyd simply put..Just like,I was looking at some tuff on boxing some fans said may their souls rest in peace some boxing fans said if Jack Dempsey and Louis would had came along at the same time Dempsey would beat Louis....Louis was heavyweight champion for like 10 years ..Had like 20 something TITTLE defense clean out the Heavyweight division in his time he beat men like Max Bear, boxer like Walcott who was a slick boxer,Ezard Charles..Dempsey didn't have that kind of competition...And he never fought Harry Willes who was considered to be the one of the best boxer ever to not get a chance to fight for the world tittle..And Oh Louis was one of the hardest hitting heavyweights of all time..Louis would have beat him....
hearns legend
legend
They will never fight so we will never know who would win.
Hitman always looking G Q.
leonard knew how to pick opponents and when to fight who. Ray managed his career well and that resulted in a bigger legacy than he earned in the ring.
Leonard KOd 5 reigning World Champs n yer talking like he was cherry picking.
Prime Hearns.
Prime Kalule
Prime Duran.
LaLonde wasn't an all time great n was a bit weight drained but still he was a legit reigning World Champ who was way bigger than Leonard who was never any bigger than a full sized WW.
Hagler was reigning World champ who had cleaned out his division n was considered p4p one of the best if not the best in the world when Leonard rolled off the couch n beat him.
1987 Hagler might have been a smidgen more worn than 1983-86 Hagler but he was still great.
Leonard was medically retired with an eye injury n had been living the high life before he came back to face Hagler in an all time great fight.
An active prime Leonard might even have stopped Hagler over 15 rds. I doubt it but he was a shadow of himself before retirement n was clearly having stamina issues from the 6th onwards. Think about it. He was gassed but done 6 further rounds with a Hagler that smelled blood in the water.
If thats not great then nothing is.
If Sugar Ray Leonard isnt in your top 5 all time list then yer either a hater, are new to the sport or just don't kno what yer looking at while yer looking at it.
I have AlI & Sugar Ray Robinson top 2 even though They're before my time but their effect n influence on the boxers who followed them since then & up until this day with Usyk n Tyson Fury paying homage to Ali with their style, they're undeniably great.
But what Ive seen in my time ?
Sugar Ray Leonards the best.
That puts him in my top 3 all time list.
Closely behind him is Roy Jones Jr.
Then everyone else can be talked about n debated but make no mistake about it, Leonard is for real one of the greatest of All time, when it came down to shining brightest on the biggest occasion theres been nobody better, the mans a winner.
Closet hagler and mayweather fan gtfo!!!
Hay que hacer cuatro estatuas de los fantasticos.para que nunca olvidemos los 80'
Thomas. I fashion everything after you. Not just boxing. I love you so much.
Great fighter. I noticed he was already slurring his words. He was in many wars.
Shame on Hearns for losing the first Leonard fight. He had no idea how to hold on when hurt back then and that cost him the win. Great fighter though; they both were.
Great fighter💪🏿
Hearns vs Martinez would be great.
ES MUY AGRADABLE VER EL AFECTO Y RESPETO QUE SE TIENEN,DIERON GRANDES PELEAS AL PUBLICO..HONOR A QUIEN HONOR MERECE..
People LOVE Tommy Hearns. Many. Quite right too. Great scrapper, wonderful right cross decent jab.
Decent jab ?
Thats like saying water is slightly damp.
Who in the history of boxing has a better jab than Tommy Hearns ?
Not as good a jab, or a comparable jab in terms of quality but a better jab.
These cats were really trying to get Tommy to say something Reckless about Floyd smh
See this guy messing with me man?
Lo mejor de lo mejor..dos dioses del boxeo..
