Absolutely. Leonard is known as one - and no one can nullify the fact that tommy was the only man that outboxed leonard. Twice. And basically every round they boxed. Hearns doesnt get enough credit for being a great boxer too.

Absolutely 💯, that's how, it should be! Not like today, where you have to unify 50 paper titles, to become ,undisputed champion, really ridiculous! Bring back WBA and WBC unification of old! AND thanks, Matthew for mentioning that 👍
Yeah even to be a top contender in that era, they are better than many World champions today. If you wanted to be Middleweight champion, there weren't intercontinental & all the different World belts. There was Marvin Hagler to go through. You want it baby, you gotta beat Hagler.. that's seriously hard fight
Not to be racists, I'm not, but it's surprising how articulate these two guys are. Tommy came out of the ghetto but he could still communicate. Compare that to some of the players coming out of college these days.

I feel a world champion should always conduct themselves in a professional manner, not like they're standing on the street corner with their homies.
Duran probably gets more credit because he was the naturally smaller fighter of all 4 which made it more difficult for him conpared to the others who had a bigger frame and more reach. However, stylistically, i still feel leonard was better than duran. Leonard was more skilled in my opinion.
Leonard was the only one to beat hagler, hearns, and Duran if I'm not mistaken, making him the one the best of all time and at least the beat of his generation.....which was the best middleweight division in history. ....however a fan can still back his fav fighter even I the wasnt the best of them all and I'm a hearn fan. You can argue who is the greatest of the 4 - and actually no matter what ppl say to me when i ask them - it can be held right. Each and everyone of them brought something oustanding to the table: hearns had the best jab in the lower divisions - might be the best ive seen - and he actually was the only one that was never outboxed even a single round. @dannymadness1 True, but from an entertainment point IMO it is at an all time low! No dominant heavy weight nor a division like we had here with Hearns and Leonard! The two best out there refuse to fight for some reason? We get another pushover fight now that we don't want to watch at all. Not just in boxing. All of the "Bullshit & Bling" athletes of today should watch and learn how to conduct themselves. They would be better received by adults, and it would do wonders for the kids. Being a kid in the 70's and early 80's, other then Ali, (And that was just his personality), I don't really remember any T.O., or Pac Man types.
Totally true! I get so sick of watching these guys that make millions have to act so flamboyant with their tats, clothes, hats, jewelry etc. Hearns and Ray are wearing sweatsuits here, as it should be. Today 2 champs would be in zoot suits, and talkin all kinds of trash. We are about the same age, and for me, the crap I read from most 20 somethings on utube blows me away. I think that the video games, cell phones, and lack of good role models, life experience & social skills has ruined them.
@Flankitto04 thats not racist lol. your not saying that they cant communicate your more so complimenting them on the fact that they can. im black and im not offended by what you said lol
I should be seeing Spence and Crawford next to each other discussing there upcoming fight in a similar fashion. But I’m afraid it will be never happen.
@nowayjose470 A day when Boxing actually was good and not boring like nowadays where you have Mayweather (Boring as hell to me) and not much else). I miss the good days, I watch the classics all the time now.
I believe you. I have 2 small kids, and I wonder what the world will be like for them 20 yrs from now. There are too many chiefs, and not enough indians. Matt Damon go's from nothing to a big time actor, and all of a sudden thinks he is some kind of "political genious" That is 1 ex of many, and I mention that because I happened to meet him in Vegas a few yrs ago, and didn't care for him.
@Flankitto04 Not everyone that lives in the ghetto talks ignorant. There are intelligent people that live in the hood, believe me. I came from the ghetto myself. That is kind of a racist assumption you made.
Not everyone who lives in the ghetto is black. Starbucks founder Howard Schultz was from the ghetto, as is Microsoft co-founder and L.A. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.
Yeah, it is too common, with too many celebs, rock stars, and athletes. They start making money & having fame, and they turn into "self riteous" pricks. Compare that mentality to yesterdays, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Robert Dinero/Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Led Zeppellin, etc. They were the best around, & still remained cool and humble about it.
Sarcasm, Sardonic, Ironic, look at the red ink on those ratings here. If this was a match of Jenga, would any pieces of wood been issued either of these two combatants. Lemme try a contextual approach. I find it Ironic, that the civility, rationale, reasoning, and on and on, were much better with the two boxers than with these two master of logic, clear reaso ning, and brilliant reparte. (Sarcasm) After 10 months, stench of the collective wrongness was affecting the cute kitten videos.
I was rooting for leonard to qin rhis fight but i didnt rhonk he woul great win by ray leonard in torrid heat I still wonder if Hearns coming in at 145 pounds hurt Hearns. The rematch 8 years later i thought Hearns won with the 2 knockouts
There was two fights I bet it on Muhammad Ali against George Foreman I won sugar Ray Leonard against Thomas the Hitman hearns I won I saw sugar Ray fight when he was 15 I knew he was going to be a champion
The two best fighters in there but Tommy Hearns did not speak with a slur it has to do with education Sugar Ray Leonard was a lot more educated in Tommy not taking anything away from her parents but that was the case parents had a limited vocabulary at the time and Sugar Ray had a vast vocabulary at the time they were both great fighters in their time love those guys
Hell I was going to throw you a bone thinking somehow there was irony, but sarcasm? Wow, ok there's yer bone, but it will cost ya later. "As most people will know, I was being sarcastic." I didn't see it that way but I can't say how most would see your remark. But you claimed "as most people will know," in the future? Or would know, if read it. Regardless, fallacious claim, rather a
Back when fighters didn't duck other great fighters; Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Benitez!!! Errol Spence should fight Everybody and not come up with week @$$ excuses why he shouldn't fight T Crawford. He wants T Crawford to accept a 60/40 or 70/30 purse???????
Pryor was a lightweight/jrwelterweight. Facing Arguello that was coming up in weight for the 4th time. Does not proof he can compete against bigger, faster and stronger man. Leonard is a lot faster than Arguello and bigger a natural 147 pounds, Hearns is not the light puncher he faced in 1976 in the amateurs now he would had faced a tremendous puncher. The same with Duran. Forget about Hagler he is a natural middleweight. 160 pounds. Pryor was never tested against a good welterweight or middleweight. He only loss one time against a Bobby Joe Young. Even Young said Pryor is to small to compete against top welterweights. Pryor struggle against a light weight like Arguello just imagine against welterweights and middleweights.
No. The winner would've likely been decided in the 15th round. With a 10-8 or 10-7 14th round in favor of Leonard almost certain, the scores going into the 15th round would've likely been...1st judge-Draw or Leonard by 1 point , 2nd judge-Draw or Hearns by 1 point, 3rd judge-Hearns by 1 or 2 points
Hearns beat Leonard clearly in the rematch...and Leonard did NOT really beat Hagler and lost to Duran...a guy who most of his greatness came as a lightweight...Leonard got destroyed by Macho Camacho at end of his career...right...not a big Ray Leonard guy.ll
Proof you don't need all the boring trash talk and degrading comments to sell a fight. These two had a healthy respect for each other, but you could still see the competitive edge and rivalry to be the best. This era of boxing will never replicated, the sport isn't what it used to be.

Leonard was such a smart fighter in the ring , set him apart from Hearns , Duran , Hagler. All great but Ray was the best of the 4.
He was even smarter outside of the ring- dude planned and was very meticulous in building up for a fight. Was even manipulating.
nope, Duran is highest on the pound for pound greatest list. Duran was very smart in the ring, did not set Ray apart.

29 years ago....hard to believe
4:20 that’s gotta be a hurting feeling to hear a man say he’s going to knock you out and then doing it lol.
2 of some of my favourite fighters
100th like!
Ray was trying to intimidate Hearns here, and it just could not work. Hearns was the big puncher.
@Flankitto04 Not everyone that lives in the ghetto talks ignorant. There are intelligent people that live in the hood, believe me. I came from the ghetto myself.
That is kind of a racist assumption you made.
So true
Not everyone who lives in the ghetto is black. Starbucks founder Howard Schultz was from the ghetto, as is Microsoft co-founder and L.A. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.
Corey roberts, have the first leonardvs hearns fight on dvd. Hearns should have won. Hitman, let the fight slip away.
@7980COOL1 Ur gonna make me cry, stop it :( I hate that fact there.
Funny thing is Tommy Hearns sounds like Shakespeare on this compared to how he sounds today.
Sarcasm, Sardonic, Ironic, look at the red ink on those ratings here. If this was a match of Jenga, would any pieces of wood been issued either of these two combatants.
Lemme try a contextual approach. I find it Ironic, that the civility, rationale, reasoning, and on and on, were much better with the two boxers than with these two master of logic, clear reaso
ning, and brilliant reparte. (Sarcasm)
After 10 months, stench of the collective wrongness was affecting the cute kitten videos.
I was rooting for leonard to qin rhis fight but i didnt rhonk he woul great win by ray leonard in torrid heat
I still wonder if Hearns coming in at 145 pounds hurt Hearns. The rematch 8 years later i thought Hearns won with the 2 knockouts
I meant Hearns with 2 knock downs in rematch in 1989
@2pacinseattle You mean Mayweather , Pac's ready and has been for years
There was two fights I bet it on Muhammad Ali against George Foreman I won sugar Ray Leonard against Thomas the Hitman hearns I won I saw sugar Ray fight when he was 15 I knew he was going to be a champion
The two best fighters in there but Tommy Hearns did not speak with a slur it has to do with education Sugar Ray Leonard was a lot more educated in Tommy not taking anything away from her parents but that was the case parents had a limited vocabulary at the time and Sugar Ray had a vast vocabulary at the time they were both great fighters in their time love those guys
compare these two to james toney
Cant... toney a natural mw - would obliterage leonard - about tommy - i also tend to give him the edge. By ko
Regardless, fallacious claim, rather a
Leonard knew he was lucky af to win this fight. That’s why he wouldn’t give him a rematch for 8 yrs. ....Shame on you Leonard.
People accused SRL of doing the same thing, he was the A side and said as much and people claimed he was ducking hearns
Notice tve elbow touch all hype
Wow all most 38 year's later Tommy's nose is flat and his speech slurred but Ray's nose is okay and his speech is fine. .Go figure ?
Tommy fought a lot more than Ray.
And 42 yrs later we got SPENCE VS CRAWFORD FOR P4P UNDISPUTED IN THE WELTERWEIGHT DIVISION💯💯💯
.......(( I BELIEVE "AARON PRYOR" BEATS BOTH THESE MEN AND DURAN / HAGLER TOO !!!
Pryor struggle against a light weight like Arguello just imagine against welterweights and middleweights.
had this fight came down to decision hearns would've won clearly u think I'm lyin go watch the fight
aj little true. But its like the old adage, its 100metres not not 101metres.
If Manny would of managed tommy's weight properly.....Tommy weighed in 2 lbs under weight. That killed Tommy in the late Rds.
Leonard is in the top 10 best welterweights in history... unfortunately hearns isn't... that first flight was the deciding factor "thems the breaks"
Sad but true
Hearns beat Leonard clearly in the rematch...and Leonard did NOT really beat Hagler and lost to Duran...a guy who most of his greatness came as a lightweight...Leonard got destroyed by Macho Camacho at end of his career...right...not a big Ray Leonard guy.ll
Very overrated fight. Good but not great
Dummy
Ray was a great fighter but there were clearly better guys...and he was no Sugar Ray...there s only 1 Sugar Ray
Overated fight really wow
Proof you don't need all the boring trash talk and degrading comments to sell a fight. These two had a healthy respect for each other, but you could still see the competitive edge and rivalry to be the best. This era of boxing will never replicated, the sport isn't what it used to be.
