    That was an awesome fight, was always a Sugar Ray fan as a fellow Marylander, but as years went by I began to like Hearns more and more, would've loved to see him beat Hagler in 1985, but he fought his heart out but came up short! No matter much Respect for the Hitman and still and always a Sugar fan!

      +TheLeadSled 100% same feeling even though I'm from Fishkill, NY. When they fought. I rooted for Leonard, Hagler and then Leonard again. But, as the years have gone by, and u realize just how much heart he had when he could have out boxed anyone but had such a desire to mix it up, how could u not love him

      +Joe Darcy yup exactly it's his heart, the heart of a lion. One thing I always didn't like is in 1987 when Sugar Ray out pointed Hagler for title I wished Hagler would've stepped up and fought a rematch instead of boot scooting to Italy to be a movie star! No matter those were the years for awesome boxing, today it's to Hollywood a'la Floyd "Money" Mayweather who btw I can't stand at all!

      Hearns let Hagler draw him into a brawl, and that wasn’t Hearns’s style.
      Hearns could have sat outside pumping that beautiful left jab and throwing overhand rights all night long, and he would have beaten Hagler.

    This was one of the great fights of the time a true classic. It's very rare when two young fighters who both held titles agree to meet in there primes. That's what made this fight so good. Theh were both in there primes and they put on a show. I still say it might have been one of the best fights I ever saw, not that it was constant toe to toe like Gatti vs Ward years later but just the overall greatness of these two trying to break each other down mentally ad physically throughout the fight. Leonard became the puncher and Hearns the Boxer.

    • @marknorris1381
      @marknorris1381 Год назад +1

      It was a great fight and a great occasion, however my own personal opinion Leonard vs Duran 1 was better. Ray going toe to toe with Duran, I watched those fights at the time and with the benefit of RUclips have watched them all again. Leonard vs Duran 1 is the best of all the fab four fights in my opinion, followed by Hagler vs Hearns, Leonard vs Hearns. I also think Duran was lucky to get as close on the cards as he did against Hagler, the result in that fight should have been wider on the cards than it was. I also think Leonard vs Hagler was a draw. Hagler only had himself to blame though. Hearns beat Ray the second time around, even though it was judged as a draw.

    • @curtismcneil8695
      @curtismcneil8695 Год назад +1

      @@marknorris1381 , Yea I loved watching the first Duran vs Leonard fight too the atmosphere itself was incredible. The action was more toe to toe true and intense that’s true. The Leonard vs Hearns fight through was a rare breed in that you had two young fighters in their absolute primes fighting which is rare in Boxing because often times in big fights one fighter can be more on the backside of their career. I didn’t mean it was the best fight for constant action but maybe one of the best when you have two fighters going up against each other and making adjustments through out the fight. They were the best two fighters in the division. One mistake with Hearns and it can be lights out as Duran would find out a few years later against Hearns. That’s what made that fight so interesting was to see who could break down the other. Absolutely a great time in Boxing and it’s a shame Leonard retired and only had one fight in 5 years before going up against Hagler. The rematches with especially with Hearns came way too late.

      Duran probably gets more credit because he was the naturally smaller fighter of all 4 which made it more difficult for him conpared to the others who had a bigger frame and more reach. However, stylistically, i still feel leonard was better than duran. Leonard was more skilled in my opinion.

    • @grahamkelly8299

      Leonard was the only one to beat hagler,hearns,and Duran if I'm not mistaken,making him the one the best of all time and at least the beat of his generation.....which was the best middleweight division in history. ....however a fan can still back his fav fighter even I the wasnt the best of them all and I'm a hearn fan. He was so exciting to watch, his speed was unbelievable. When he destroyed Duran,I've never seen a great fighter getting beat up like that before, apart from when foreman beat Frazier, but I think power matters a lot more in that division so it's a little different.

    • @eranliber5993
      @eranliber5993 4 года назад +1

      You can argue who is the greatest of the 4 - and actually no matter what ppl say to me when i ask them - it can be held right. Each and everyone of them brought something oustanding to the table: hearns had the best jab in the lower divisions - might be the best ive seen - and he actually was the only one that was never outboxed even a single round. Plus - he was the 1st ever to win titles in 4 and than in t weight divisions.
      Duran was the best infighter ive seen. Monster ring iq as much as he was a monster aggressor. He was the one that made the most significant climb in weights out of the 4.
      Hagler - the perfect switch fighter and might be the best southpaw ever. And he actually was right handed.... lets not forget his iron chin.
      Leonard - best footwork ive seen, maybe the fastest hands, great ring iq, and also great chin made him the fighter we know.
      Conclusion - take your pick. You could'nt be wrong. The 80s was the real golden age of boxing

    Some people had a problem with SRL giving away strategy.
    It doesn’t matter, and you can get into your opponent’s head by giving away strategy. The opponent has to wonder if it’s really the plan.
    That’s why SRL is one of the GOATS. He has always understood that the fight begins during the negotiations and ramps up after both fighters sign.
    Everything you say and do before the fight contributes to what happens in the ring.
    It’s like Mike Tyson said: everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth! 🤷🏽‍♂️😖🥊
    So it’s not about the plan; it’s about the execution.

    I believe you. I have 2 small kids, and I wonder what the world will be like for them 20 yrs from now. There are too many chiefs, and not enough indians. Matt Damon go's from nothing to a big time actor, and all of a sudden thinks he is some kind of "political genious" That is 1 ex of many, and I mention that because I happened to meet him in Vegas a few yrs ago, and didn't care for him.

    That is kind of a racist assumption you made.

    Yeah, it is too common, with too many celebs, rock stars, and athletes. They start making money & having fame, and they turn into "self riteous" pricks. Compare that mentality to yesterdays, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Robert Dinero/Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Led Zeppellin, etc. They were the best around, & still remained cool and humble about it.

    Sarcasm, Sardonic, Ironic, look at the red ink on those ratings here. If this was a match of Jenga, would any pieces of wood been issued either of these two combatants.
    Lemme try a contextual approach. I find it Ironic, that the civility, rationale, reasoning, and on and on, were much better with the two boxers than with these two master of logic, clear reaso
    ning, and brilliant reparte. (Sarcasm)
    After 10 months, stench of the collective wrongness was affecting the cute kitten videos.

    The two best fighters in there but Tommy Hearns did not speak with a slur it has to do with education Sugar Ray Leonard was a lot more educated in Tommy not taking anything away from her parents but that was the case parents had a limited vocabulary at the time and Sugar Ray had a vast vocabulary at the time they were both great fighters in their time love those guys

      Pryor was a lightweight/jrwelterweight. Facing Arguello that was coming up in weight for the 4th time. Does not proof he can compete against bigger, faster and stronger man. Leonard is a lot faster than Arguello and bigger a natural 147 pounds, Hearns is not the light puncher he faced in 1976 in the amateurs now he would had faced a tremendous puncher. The same with Duran. Forget about Hagler he is a natural middleweight. 160 pounds. Pryor was never tested against a good welterweight or middleweight. He only loss one time against a Bobby Joe Young. Even Young said Pryor is to small to compete against top welterweights. Pryor struggle against a light weight like Arguello just imagine against welterweights and middleweights.

      No. The winner would've likely been decided in the 15th round. With a 10-8 or 10-7 14th round in favor of Leonard almost certain, the scores going into the 15th round would've likely been...1st judge-Draw or Leonard by 1 point , 2nd judge-Draw or Hearns by 1 point, 3rd judge-Hearns by 1 or 2 points

    Proof you don't need all the boring trash talk and degrading comments to sell a fight. These two had a healthy respect for each other, but you could still see the competitive edge and rivalry to be the best. This era of boxing will never replicated, the sport isn't what it used to be.
