They were both past their prime bud, but both also weren’t terribly old. People have come up with this misconception that Hagler was in his late 30’s and Leonard was a spring chicken but that furthest from the truth. Leonard had already had many injuries plaguing him and had a 4 yr layoff when taking the Hagler fight, and he still beat Hagler which is impressive asf.

@@jonnydanger7181 Sugar Ray Leonard did have a detached retina and had surgery to repair it in 1982, and then in 1984 had another surgery to repair the retina in his right eye. He fought Kevin Howard in 1984, but did not have another fight till his first fight with Hagler in 1987. So Leonard wasn’t ducking Hagler, he was drinking too much and doing drugs which was caused at least partly due to the stress of he didn’t know if he would be able to fight again. And considering he had only 1 fight in 5 years and hadn’t fought for 3 years before he fought Hagler, it was beyond incredible that he was able to fight so well against Hagler. And Leonard was 30 just a month away from being 31, and Hagler was 32 a month away from being 33, so both were very close in age.

  • @nitramfan
    @nitramfan 9 лет назад +24

Leonard's whole strategy was to run from Hagler until the final seconds, then do a flurry of punches as if he was hurting Hagler --- and the chump judges bought Leonard's cheap act.
Hagler actually won the fight; he threw more punches; hit Leonard more than Leonard hit him; and his punches hurt Leonard more than Leonard's love taps hurt Hagler. All in all, Hagler should have won the unanimous decision. You simply don;t take away a champion's belt simply because the opponent is the better actor.
A real shame that the PT Barnum of middleweights, Leonard, got the win. It was a sham!
Then again, if Leonard had decided to actually participate in the fight rather than making like Peter Pan, Hagler might have killed him!

    • @SuaveRikko

Yes you are correct technically. The difference is Sugar was hitting Hagler like a little girl would have just for the points. Sugar only won on points. That is not how you are supposed to dethrone a champ. This type of stuff is what ruins sports.

What Leonard did have was the love and support of the promotional elites and boxing oligarchs.

I agree with you %100 Especially on that Donny Lalonde fight where Leonard gets two titles in two different weights in one fight many people forget that. I disagree with you on Hearns and Hagler being better boxers. Leonard was a masterful boxer otherwise both Hearns and Hagler would have beaten Leonard. You seem well knowledgeable on this so please don’t bring up the second Hearns fight. You of all people know that Leonard underestimated Hearns thinking that Hearns had nothing left. That fight was purely for money on Leonard’s part. If Leonard really wanted to fight Hearns a second time then Leonard would have given him a rematch within a year of their first fight and not wait until Hearns had grown old and was well battle scarred. Like in your synopsis Leonard was awarded a draw more on politics. He clearly lost that fight. The fact that Leonard admits that Hearns deserved the decision is more to the fact that they are friends outside the ring and Leonard truely sees Hearns as a friend.

Even though i loved srl as a fighter - i loved the rest of the kings more. And he did lose to tommy in the rematch. But i saw him defeating hagler. Hagler fought foolishly in the 1st half of the fight by trying to outbox leonard from an orthodox stance. He could've done better by staying mostly at southpaw.
Btw, saying srl had no skills, or less skills is a quite a statement... PRIME footwork, generalship, great jab, beautiful combinations, distance management, rope work, mobility, good defense. Ray had ALOT of mad skills. Each and every one of the 4 brought something to the table that not many ever could do better:
Duran was a prime pocket monster fighting inside and wrastling for position, also MAD iq, tommy hearns probably the only boxer i can think of that never lost a single round by boxing (other than slugging), best jab i've seen in the lower divisions and imo one of the best ever, devestating punching mechanics including the left to the body, and hagler cut the ring like no other, and was probably the best switch fighter and best southpaw boxing has ever known.

      @rparker8761 8 лет назад +4

FreedomForce100 "Touching and not being touched is more important than hitting hard." Yes, that is how the Mayweather people love to think. But hitting hard scores more points, according to the rules of the sport. You dance around and not get hit, throw and land 10 light punches---but get knocked on your ass by ONE hard punch---you lose the round. you could land 1000 punches and get knocked out by one punch---and lose the fight. Why do you think they have a ten count? Why do you think its called fighting? I am getting tired of teaching boxing to people attempting to justify Mayweather's poor offense. Leornard was great, but he would have lost to Hagler in a regular sized ring, with normal size gloves. And he was a pussy in not giving him a rematch. Duran gave Leonard a rematch, oh, but when it came to Hagler and Hearns-----whatever.

    • @FreedomForce100

+arvik skoynib too bad that a boxing teacher doesn't understand stylists. Like it or not, Mayweather is one of the best stylist in boxing history. Brute force will never be as pleasant and spectacular as style. The boxer recognized as the greatest in history, Muhammad Ali was a stylist. No brute force boxer can "Move like a butterfly and sting like a bee".
Didn't you see the Ali footwork that Leonard showed? That was to acknowledge his respect to the greatest and tell everyone he was one of the greatest himself.
I have taught boxing and have done competition boxing. You sound like a mediocre teacher. If you have not understood defense, you are not making your boxers safe.
What level are you teaching? Do you have an idea of the cardio required to last 12 rounds against Hagler?
Well I got news for you: Leonard's knew he had to win by points. Heavier punches would not have allowed to last 12 rounds against Hagler. You're not that dumb to get that, are you?
Regarding a rematch Leonard had made it clear BEFORE the match: ONE match.
A stylist defeated a puncher because intelligence and skills will often defeat brute force.

FreedomForce100 That has to be one of the stupidist posts I have ever seen. Gee, how did I know that you were a Mayweather jocksniffer? Ok, you are young, never watched boxing, when you started watching boxing, Mayweather was being hailed as the greatest ever and you bought into it. "Stylists." You are a boxing teacher?? Where do you teach? At a high school or college? Or one of those gyms where yuppies go? "I have taught boxing and have done competition boxing. You sound like a mediocre teacher. If you have not understood defense, you are not making your boxers safe." You are clueless and can't even pretend to know what you are talking about. No---don't try, you are not fooling anyone. That's not how it works. You've never been in a gym. Offense and defense are not separate things----you have no clue, stop. let's move on---"I've got to go to my boxing lesson" lol. Ali thought Tyson was incredible because Tyson had defense speed and power. Hearns had incredible boxing skills and could have EASILY out "styled" Mayweather. "Didn't you see the Ali footwork that Leonard showed? That was to acknowledge his respect to the greatest and tell everyone he was one of the greatest himself. " Some more idiotic talk. 1st--Leonard was a great fighter and he paid Hagler in order to accept a larger ring---so Leonard could fight his fight (stay way on the outside and not get caught). He paid Hagler to accept using larger gloves to negate Hagler's power. Hagler was greedy and accepted. Leonard had a fight plan to go out and dance and stay out of danger's way. Hagler wanted to prove that he was a better boxer than Leonard and tried to out box him and didn't fight his fight. Hagler lost. But if they would have fought in a normal sized ring, with normal sized glove, and if Hagler was not on an ego trip and fought his fight (which would have happened had SRL given him a rematch), Hagler would have done better. As for Leonard's Ali-Shuffle----people were rolling their eyes. Stop the cutesy Ali-Shuffle, stop the bolo-punching, stop the running and fight. Hagler must have said, "c'mon let's fight" 100 times in that fight. Leonard wore tassles like Ali---cute things that people who don;t know shit about boxing think are important. I can tell by the way you talk and describe boxing that you've never been a part of it (except maybe at a "boxing class" in hs. SRL is great, but this idea that this style of fighting (i.e., running) is at a better level is absurd. "Great" fighters have it all---offense AND defense. Leonard had it all, but Hagler was great too. His pussy style of winning (barely. by split decision) was bullshit. Not accepting a rematch showed that he was scared, just like not giving Hearns a rematch immediately. (But when SRL lost to Duran---SRL insisted on an immediate rematch in order to fight an untrained Duran. He did not want a trained Duran--SRL admits that this was his plan. Sure it was smart, but does not prove he was a better fighter. It was smart to insist on a large ring to run in, but he could only get a split decision and you want me to be impressed? I am done with you.

Hagler is the greatest Middleweight of all time, better then Sugar Ray Robinson. The guy has never been knocked out or knocked down, all of his losses were robberies. He should have retired undefeated. He got robbed against Willie Monroe, Bobby Watts and Sugar Ray Leonard.

+Mike Shea he lost to Leonard. That was his only true loss. 9 out of 12 analysts gave Leonard winner. Leonard had 49÷ contact punches vs Hagler 37÷. Leonard had also score a higher number of punches in total. Many refs and analysts who watched the match again confirmed it was not as close as we thought. Hagler clearly lost that fight. I'm an Hagler fan but I'm not biaised to the point of ignoring the obvious: Hagler was the most dominant. Leonard was the best boxer and stylist. Technically superior. No question about it.

Also, it's hard to argue he was robbed against Willie Monroe. I think he lost the first fight fair and square. That doesn't make him any less great when you consider the circumstances under which he took that fight.

hand speed, knockout power in both hands, and great lateral movement, and tough
as nails for his smaller frame size. He beat the best of them like Hearns, Hagler and
Duran, so I don't think you can find anybody better. Maybe Mayweather Jr would give
him a good fight, but no knockout power, so Leonard would take that fight. Best all

He had a style that worked until he came up against the true greats. Judging by his ridiculous comment about Marvin not really hitting him that much, he clearly hasn’t learnt anything post retirement Watch the fight back dude and maybe the visit to the hospital afterwards was a charity gig. Its been like that since the beginning of time so i have to give that fight to Hagler.Sugar Ray at the time was more marketable and thats where the politics of boxiing came into play. That one judge who had him winning by 118 to 112 twelve must of been asleep. It was a close fight where a coin flip could of determined it and in that case the champ should retain the title...

Leonard once said, after he retired, no one ever hit him as hard a Roberto Duran did. The great 5 title champ Vinny Pazienza said the same thing. Leonard would probably beat most of today's so called "Champs" if time could be manipulated. A lot of loudmouths today who refuse to fight top opponents who are in their prime, personally I think Mayweather Jr started this crap. Leonard fought through one of the greatest boxer/fighter eras in history, so many legends who fought each other. However, I do feel like some do, that Leonard became the boxing media & judges darling boy & was handed wins he really didn't deserve, again, a lot like Mayweather, except Leonard had the courage to stand & fight at times. This cost him against Duran, that's why he manipulated the rematch from behind the scene, didn't want Duran to 100%, & he certainly wasn't going to stand toe to toe with Roberto again. But, Duran bears responsibility for his weight gain he couldn't remove properly, & it cost him to this day, as that's the only fight out of 119 career bouts of this great legend casuals seem to remember. End of line.

Hagler actually is more of an arm puncher than a snap puncher, unless he was fighting a much taller opponent when he had to leap in with his punches to reach them, thus putting his weight behind them, tall opponents like Hearns and Obel.
As Gil Clancy commented, Hagler has strong arms but he is a “clubber”, he does not have too much snap in his punches, he seldom knocked his opponents out cold, but usually seared them down with accumulated punishment.

It would take todays P4P best guys to get it done and beat that’s for sure and really that’s only a maybe. In fact, he’s the perfect opponent for Mayweather due to his speed, movement and punch accuracy and output.
Even a prime Hitman Hearns making the lighter weights today with his tall build and reach, plus he had like 50 KO’s
I think they would both clean house at these junior welterweight or welterweight divisions now that I think of it, had great effective styles during their prime years fighting

@@goinfishinalba9811 I would’ve thought the same, but I’ve watched the sugar Ray fight over and over, and I compared that Hagler to the one who destroyed the Hit Man Hearns, the Beast Mugabi and I can’t help but believe he threw the fight to sugar Ray.. everyone has their price

Hit man hearns gotta be the hardest whacker. Leonard hearns benitez duran were all fantastic pound for pound fighters . All fought successfully at different weights. None of that for hagler, he stayed in his comfort zone. He never went up in weight to fight saad muhammid.Yes hagler was a magnificent natural middleweight . He should have been able to blast out leonard in 7 rounds. Leonard brain and hand speed beat haglers brawn. Leonard was like the SAS special forces thinking solider ,uding his brain to beat brute force.

Leonard would beat Floyd. True legend right there.

SRL was too good for the great Hagler. Who else could have come back after a long lay off and beat the champion ? Yes , no one else

Spot-on there! NOBODY could have done what Ray did, especially when it comes to almost without question, the best middleweight champ for a long time in Marvin Hagler.

You have to be trolling, Hagler clearly won the fight and the decision was given to SRL to try and set up a money making trilogy.

Listen. I dont like Floyd Jr but it has to be said Ray was losing by along margin in the first Hearns fight and got his ass kicked in the second.

Mayweather is great. But in todays era it is about the promotion and the money, not so much the legacy to SOME boxers. I miss the days the titans would clash and really test who the best TRULY was. But how are we suppose to judge who the greatest fighters of todays era are without them fighting eachother? How? Compare them to fighters that are linked to other fighters? That is fuckin sad, Its disgusting actually. Its become...pathetic. But I will still watch floyd till the end.

srl fought and won against duran, hearns and hagler. nuf said. floyd has a good resume but a lot of his fights dont mean much anymore. struggled against judah, cotto, and de la hoya. wouldnt fight pacquiao. the only thing that makes him relevant is his 0 loss.

Sugar Ray outboxed and outclassed Hagler in the fight. It’s a simple as that. Barring Muhammad Ali he was the greatest boxer. That does not detract from the skills of Hagler, Hearns & Duran. All of them all time greats of boxing.

Leonard Hearns Hagler to strong for Mayweather. Mayweather is a legend but that was a different era. You can't compare era's

you are a straight hater, floyd fought more champions in a row than any other fighter in history and has been a champion longer. he's fought high caliber fighters and made them look bad and im a boxing fanatic, Hearns wouldve presented Floyd with the biggest problems but he would have beaten all of those guys in my opinion. Hagler had major defensive deficiences, leonards plan A,B,& C was speed and he was easy to lead into trap. i'm down for this conversation with anyone.

Sugar Ray won the Hagler fight. I saw it back when it happened. Opinions through the passage of time have made Hagler the winner to some people. I guess since Sugar Ray was so popular and marketable that somehow made some people think there wasn't substance to him. But he is pound for pound the best boxer I have ever seen.
