As someone who's family lived on the same street as SRL'S (Mathew Henson Dr.-Palmer Park, Md.) before he became an icon. As well as spoken to him quite a few times in the past, I can tell you that you are 100% correct. Very shy. But when the camera's roll, he changes.
Actually, the same is said about Muhammad Ali. His public image was that of a loquacious person, but he was said to be very low key and even quiet in private.
His Hotboxin' w/ Mike Tyson appearance shows this as well. I feel you can tell when he's uncomfortable when he gets super composed, almost inhumanly lol.
True. Leonard had an early fight before he even won a world title where he said his siblings were good at sports while he was younger and was a homebody and a self-described "momma's boy". There's also an old article from Sports Illustrated where he mentioned he liked to read comic books at home and play w/ his German Shepherd until he started boxing.
A lot of truth in that interview. Sugar Ray, was America's beloved sugar cube in heart and soul. My parents talked of their love for him along with everyone else. No one wanted to see him get hurt, though everyone wanted to see him win. Winning didn't matter--everyone loved (and still loves), sweet Ray

A great champion. I saw the fight closed circuit. It was edge of the seat for 15 rounds. I was disappointed he fought toe to toe and didn't use his speed and agility to stick and move. But he provided he could go 15 rounds with one of the best punches of the era. I saw a recent interview and he is still very articulate unlike many retired boxers where the punches took a real toll on the mental faculities.
Even if I consider myself a fan of Duran, I have nothing but admiration for Ray. Nothing but admiration for hearns, hagler, Benitez, Barkley, buchanan, de Jesus, palomino, Moore etc. It takes a lot from a man to do what these guys did. All of them are true warriors and superb technicians. Especially the 4 walk in their own realm. It’s just astonishing what they did, always remained or regained their class. 'Blite13'. First, I want to say that it is a pleasure debating with you regarding this issue. You clearly have an understanding of the era. Makes the conversation that much better. We may have different opinions, but it is truly a joy to finally come across someone who has a functional knowledge of the sport. For full disclosure, I grew up in the D.C. & Maryland area. I'd see SRL running in the mornings on George Palmer Hwy as I was being dropped of to school. This was before the '76 Olympics. I've even had the pleasure of speaking to Mr. Cicero (SRL's Father) a couple times before he passed. They lived a couple houses down from my Uncle Leonard in Palmer Park, Md. SRL even came to my High School to raise money for our football team by playing an exhibition basketball game back in '84. My reason for disclosing this is because even with the 'hometown pride' thing I still do not hesitate to critique SRL objectively. A few of his fights I felt he held too much, danced and stayed away from his opponent too much, etc. With that being said, your responses (once again) are accurate. But (once again) don't go all the way to the heart of the matter. One, as admirable/noble as it was, Duran chose to give away a substantial amount of his earnings to Panama's poor. Sometimes as much as $10K daily. Had he controlled his finances better, he more than likely would not have felt pressured to take the fight. That's on Duran. Not SRL. Second, when Duran's manager (Eleta) called him to come back from New York to Panama to start training Duran he did so. There was just one problem...he didn't start training as he was supposed to. "As soon as I got the call from Eleta, we left N.Y. But-Big Mistake-back in Panama I kept partying." excerpt from 'I Am Duran: My Autobiography' Bottom line, as I said before. Duran lost because of Duran. Saying that a fighter needs a break/time to enjoy their success is true. I've been a boxing fan since I was 10 yrs old (1980) and knew that. However, **there is something to be said for personal responsibility**. It was actually Alexis Arguello (not SRL) that made me a boxing fan...lol. I didn't see the need to make excuses for SRL when he lost to Norris. Because SRL *chose* to step into that ring. I see no reason to offer 'reasons' as to why Duran failed in the rematch w/ SRL. Because at the end of the day...his reasons for losing were self inflicted.
thank you for that. My problem is.....when a guy says it was his strategy to get the other guy into the ring when he wasn't at his best. That shows Ray didn't think he could beat a 100% Duran. Duran was the best fighter in the world at that time and he deserved to call the shots and get into the ring when he was ready.....but he was forced by his own people, who had taken payoffs from Leonard, to take the fight. Ray had bought off Duran's corner and was manipulating Duran into the ring when he wasn't ready to fight. Duran wanted the money for sure, it was by far his biggest pay day of his life. Leonard made it so Duran wouldn't be ready, no honor. Then with Hagler, Ray waits until his legs are shot and wouldn't give Tommy a rematch until Tommy "was shot". No Honor. @@Bob-eo6uh I agree, he wanted to beat him at his own game. Duran would try the same tactics in the rematch but Sugar knew better that time! Halcyon days indeed.
@@unorthodox7945 After smashing Leonard in their first fight, Duran gave him a rematch 5 months later. Leonard would make Duran wait another 9 years before daring to get in the ring with him again.
Leonard is the best fighter from the 80's to today. However, I don't buy his explanations for going flat-footed and toe-to-toe with Duran for most of the fight. That he got lured into this strategy by Duran's trash talk and constant curses. That the hype got to him. That's nonsense! He was the bigger guy, a natural welterweight, and had KO'd his last 5 opponents. Including total annihilations of Andy Price in the first round and Davey Green in fourth round. Meanwhile, Duran had not shown the same power at welter as he did as the undisputed lightweight champ with only 4 KO's out of 8 fights. Duran was going up two weight classes, from 135 to 147 lbs. That's a big jump. I think Sugar Ray and Angelo Dundee really believed that if Ray came straight at Duran from the start, his power would eventually be too much for Duran. Also, Dundee felt Duran was not always disciplined with his training. But on this night, Roberto performed at his absolute best, in peak form, and was the better fighter. The Sugar Ray of 5 months later would've still had a difficult fight. IMO, the reality is Duran never got close to this level again.
Good analysis. Duran peaked in June. Fell hard in Nov. And never really made it back to dominance. I think Duran learned that his name could make him millions without him training as hard as he used to. Plus Arcel left and he probably had a bunch of yes men training him.
And Leonard knew Duran would eat and PARTY and gain alot of weight. That's why the second fight happen to fast. On top of that he didn't fight just ran around the ring!
I have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other videos on YT.
He feels he won bulshit he needs to be honest with himself give him credit for taking the punishment Duran was a 135 jumping to 147 and gave the media darling Leonard his worst beating
He underestimated Duran. All this talk about him fighting his fight because he was upset about Duran cursing and taunting him is not the whole story. Coming into the fight, Ray was seen as the bigger man, a natural 147 fighting a guy coming up from 135. He never knew Duran would be able to overpower him, much less outbrawl him. Ray was wrong in all these matters.
In an interview with Howard Cosell a couple of days after the fight in Montreal, Howard asked Ray why he didn't move even when Angelo was yelling at him to move.....Ray said, "because I couldn't, what Duran was doing, he wouldn't let me move, so I had to fight".
Duran didn't give him much of a choice ....And the second they didn't give Duran time to train because they new if Duran was in shape he would have beat Ray again..
It funny that Ray said there's nothing like l beating fighter at his style ...But too beat Duran they didn't give Duran time to train for the second because they new that a in shape Duran was to tuff and mean for Ray to beat..And forget the third fight it took place years after Duran was pass his prime simply put...
He lost that one The first one, but Christ What a fight that was. Greatest meeting and fight between two boxers EVER? Well if not, name a fight between two better boxers at their peak?? Oh yeah.. you cant.
All this time me being a Ray Leonard fan blamed Angelo Dundee and Ray's trainer for making the decision to come out flat footed. Mr Cavett asked the main question. Opening this interview. "Who was it that decided to you to come out flat footed" When what got ray to that point was high level boxing not flat footed. Terrible game plan.
To boxing aficionados out there, do you buy this MMA argument that the boxer punches harder than an MMA fighter because the gloves are smaller. They claim that because boxing gloves are bigger, and more cushion, boxers can punch harder and not hurt their hands.
Duran was to tuff for Learned he steamrolled Learned in there first fight..So,they new the only way to beat Duran, they new he gain a lot of weight in between fights partying..So they went behind his back and set him up to loose plain and simple ..By signing him up for the fight knowing he didn't have enough time to get ready..Learned didn't beat Duran in the second fight he was beat before he got in the ring...They new in shape he would have steamrolled Learned again point blink period end of paragraph...Boxing is a dirty business lol
Duran won because Sugar didn’t stick and move and stay on his toes use the whole ring he chose to stay flat footed and brawl with the man they called “ Hands of stone “ which was a very bad idea one that he corrected in the second fight which he won.
because Ray got an out of shape Duran who was in no condition to fight. Ray said it was his 'strategy' to get Duran into the ring at less than 100%. What kind of champ wants to fight his greatest rival when he isn't in shape to fight? Same with Hagler. So Ray waited for Duran to get fat, then Ray threw a ton of money at Duran's handlers to get Duran to sign for a fight they knew he could not be ready for. Duran had no legs in New Orleans, just the way Ray wanted it.
@@blite13 on the flip side, Duran made it so personal with ray for the first fight by making remarks to his wife that ray didnt fight his natural style n box but rather went to 2 toe which was what he did the second time
@@sevfan1 then why does Ray admit it was his 'strategy'? Ray paid off Duran's people to convince Roberto to sign. Ray wanted a less than 100% Duran, Ray says it himself. What kind of champ wants to fight his biggest rivals when they weren't at their best? Ray, that is who.
Ray threw a boatload of money at Duran's corner to get Roberto to sign when they all knew Roberto wouldn't be ready for the fight. Ray promised a 3rd fight if Duran went through with it.....the 3rd fight didn't happen till 10 years later when Roberto was completely done.

There's no sense of awkwardness when he's talking to Dick...as you'd see in other interviews with him. To make Dick feel at ease, you gotta be cool lol. But ironically it was Dick's nervousness that made the show fun to watch .
Ray was my referee once Hill crest heights MD .The 70s😊
I don't think this was the best interview Cavett ever had, or Leonard ever gave, but I like it anyway!
I agree. I'm a big fan of both men, but this wasn't Cavett at his best by a long shot.
I truly believe that Sugar Ray Leonard is the greatest boxer of all time. Speed, finesse, pure talent and grit.
I concur
You need to do more research
Well, they don't come much better, put it that way
@@jeffreydog9850 Robinson? Langford? Gans? Greb? Armstrong? Duran? .....I could go on and on..Leonard was special,..for a brief time
Duran was a better boxer than Leonard. He was five years older, three inches shorter, had eight inches less reach, and he still dominated Leonard.
Young SLR looks like he belongs to the Jackson 5.
Great to see..
And he did not choose to fight Duran's style. He had no choice.
Props to him for letting it go to decision
He definitely CHOSE to. From the first bell he came out flat footed
@@Bob-eo6uh I agree, he wanted to beat him at his own game. Duran would try the same tactics in the rematch but Sugar knew better that time! Halcyon days indeed.
Well the 2nd & 3rd fight end this foolishness now doesn't it Lol
On top of that he didn't fight just ran around the ring!
very interesting comments that make alot of sense. Im sure Dundee wouldnt let him fight Duran flat footed
Haha complete twoddle you just wrote, Hagler was the best fighter of the lot of em fact, sugar ray was a fake..!! Your deluded 😆😂😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thank you :)
from no perspective did he win that first fight though he fought valiantly
Leonard.....Duran came at him in the 1st Fight ....
I was there at olympic stadium, 100$ seats were aways away! But still a great fight.
That outfit goes crazy
Ray Leonard is a great Boxer, but Duran was also great, and Ray you lost the first fight, accept it
No finer a pugilist than the great Ray Leonard.
Roberto Duran
@@Bruins-vq5ey nope! SRL was a better boxer than Duran, as was Hagler & Hearns

Who else started craving pancakes 🥞 after watching this?
I have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other videos on YT.
He feels he won bulshit he needs to be honest with himself give him credit for taking the punishment Duran was a 135 jumping to 147 and gave the media darling Leonard his worst beating
Look at the faces of both fighters at the end of the fight. Leonard was battered. Duran, not a scratch.
Ray made a bad choice in fighting Duran style,it cost him.
@@Yanikleko ...So right
I like Ray but Hearns won the last time they fought . It was nice Ray admitted that
That little 135 pound guy beat Ray in his prime 147 pounds that was all natural weight on Ray
He lost that one The first one, but Christ What a fight that was. Greatest meeting and fight between two boxers EVER? Well if not, name a fight between two better boxers at their peak?? Oh yeah.. you cant.
Duran was almost past his prime when he fought leonard in first fight. Duran prime was in lightweight.
I preferred Leonard vs Hearns 1
Pryor vs Arguello 1
Cavett has repeatedly talked to guys that could easily kill him like they can’t lol
Sugar Ray Robinson was also a tap dancer.
5:33 Lmao. They just went and said that word. Times were different back then.
I still would say it
@kenneth beach Damn you're so cool bro!
Amazing how stupid people have become.
ThAts natural in unfamiliar situations
Sugar thought he won ? Oh bullshit. Duran in rd 2 almost kod SRL.
Referee saved him. He let him hold Duran for the rest of the round after he got hurt.
Do you just make all this stuff up in your head. wow . The funny thing you really believe someone would believe one word of what youre saying lmao
Duran won because Sugar didn’t stick and move and stay on his toes use the whole ring he chose to stay flat footed and brawl with the man they called “ Hands of stone “ which was a very bad idea one that he corrected in the second fight which he won.
he No Mas ‘d him the 2nd time around
because Ray got an out of shape Duran who was in no condition to fight.
@@blite13 on the flip side, Duran made it so personal with ray for the first fight by making remarks to his wife that ray didnt fight his natural style n box but rather went to 2 toe which was what he did the second time
@@blite13 Duran's fault, not Ray's.
@@blite13 you can slice it any way you want,Leonard has Durans name on his Resume thats the bottom line.
the peoples champ
Duran should have made Leonard get in line for rematch.
Ray threw a boatload of money at Duran's corner to get Roberto to sign when they all knew Roberto wouldn't be ready for the fight. Ray promised a 3rd fight if Duran went through with it.....the 3rd fight didn't happen till 10 years later when Roberto was completely done.
Michael Jones...They made a big money deal with Duran's manager without talking to Duran...Money over his fighter's health
@@blite13...RIGHT
Rematch was set up. They gave Duran an offer he could not refuse. The less said the better...
Not for 10 million bucks
Duran flashed him back to him sitting down talking to his mom "don't be a boxer son". 🤐
Pretty chap
Is he related to stitch Duran.
Saurya Shrestha No LOL he’s not even closely related
I loved the fight and love Suger
But he was talking crap
He lost the fight full stop
There's three kings and then there's him , play at his own game well tell that to hagler
The amount of arrogance from TV presenters like this man back in the day. Still not sure how someone agreed to give him his own show. . I hope he give it back..
How was Cavett arrogant...?
Ray look like King von
Am I the only one, but he sounds like Tyson here... weird
I used worship this guy when younger, looking at it now he had the American middle class vote too much,Hagler beat him
Yeah but ray leonard got the best out of the four kings. He wasn't the strongest but he had the most talent.
You lost ray
He looks so much like Floyd
Sugar Ray can eat on the house.
Ray look like the Williams sister's.. lol
Wrong strategy Sugar 😅
This is Sugar Ray at his absolute worst. He's doing some kind of weird impersonation of Ali (probably why he's on Cavett in the first place). Watch him nowadays, he's one of the most impressive athletes you'll ever seen because he gave up the act
It is a banality, but nevertheless:
Most of us are acting and many of us do not like themselves doing it. So being more oneself is a goal to which we may come to in age.
But being on tv is something different and judging someone here is easy.
Srl seems not to have been vain and he was not talking all the time.
And who knows whom ma was impersonating.
Leonard was both a master boxer and a master bullshitter. Leonard had a reputation as a fancy Dan, so he thought he'd *prove* his macho credentials by going toe to toe with a fighter a full weight division below his natural weight...didn't work out and sugar got battered. Great fighter, but an unlikable and calculating man with a carefully curated career.
sugar did not nrsat duran
he wil never be loke duran or ali
Roberto da kigwa duran huwaahahahahhaha
Sugar Ray was a fake and the worst fighter of the big 4, hagler been the king ..!!👎
Hagler only stayed in ONE division
Um... Leonard is king of 5 division.
Really? SLR 6 division world champion.. hagler stay in one division which is the super middleweight.
Yowww gavett suit is trash wtf !smh
Sugar cheated on second and third fights against duran.second fight ,duran fat out of shape, third fight was done 7 years later.
