Kirkland Laing was my favourite boxer in the 80's. On his day he could easily have won a World Title but sadly he seemed to hit the self destruct button every rime he came close. He was very like another British boxer, Herol Graham, who had all the power, skill and technique but seemed to lack the mentality of a true champion. The one thing they both had in common was they were both lovely, genuine men and loved entertaining the crowd.

This was an incredible performance by Laing. Duran was unbeatable in the 1970s and one of the best fighters of all time. But after he was beaten by Sugar Ray Leonard, I don't think he was quite the same, even though he came back and won some fantastic fights years after this one. Having said that, this was an excellent win by Kirkland Laing. He was so talented, and it is a shame he never really made it in the way he should have. He could have been an all-time great if he had worked harder and dedicated himself. That is easier said than done, though, and, unfortunately, I don't think he had the mental strength to do that. He is still one of my favorite boxers of all time.

Duran was way over his prime. He was a natural lightweight and dominated that weight class. When he moved up in weight classes he had already defended the lightweight title successfully 12 times, and was past his prime. When he moved up from the lightweight division he fought faster, physically bigger, and younger fighters in their prime, in boxing time. He eventually adjusted to the speed, height, and size difference and was successful. He fought some of the meanest scariest fighters of his time and beat most of them. He considered heavy weights boxing frauds and would have fought against Heavyweights but the weight difference was too extreme. To demonstrate the greatness of Roberto Duran just consider this, he was greater than the fighters he lost to. Roberto Duran has to be considered among the top 5 fighters of all time. Part of what made him great was a combination of his street intelligence, his aggression, and his boxing school which was a lineage that went back to Benny Leonard. The other day I asked a group of old white ladies if they knew who Roberto Duran was, they all said yes. Thats how famous he is.

Duran,in the time he fought Laing,he wasn't really at his best, considering how hurt he was after defeats from Sugar and Benitez, but after this loss to Kirkland,he was given one last chance to fight Pipino and somehow reverted back to his prime only for that fight and the fight for Davey, and later on when facing Iran, it's the last glimpse of we see a motivated hungry Duran, both are scary when hungry, hard to hit but hits you hard, real scary..

but he was overrated big time duran was only great when he was at that smaller weight when he moved up that punch didnt follow him he was madly overrated he beat none of the kings and i say none because he didnt even beat that ray fight and ray only fought him toe to toe because duran tricked him into fighting him in toe to toe and i dont know why ray accepted it but ray said he called his wife a biiii which sounds like duran he was trying anything to get ray mad and fight him toe to toe and duran still didnt win that fight that fight was a draw and the only reason they gave it too duran is just what ray said he said they gonna look at the fight and think that duran made him fight toe to toe when it was him his self who did it too prove to duran that he cant or couldnt knock me out or hurt me im a man just like he is but when that fight was over ray told him ok i fought ur style to a stand still now u fight me my style the next fight and we gonna see what happens and u can see that in the ring at the end of that first fight duran waved his hands off to ray saying get out of here duran was a chump fareal he got shut out with all the others this man would have went 0 for 7 i think that is he couldnt beat nobody

Duran had a broken rib for the second Leonard fight. The third one he chased Ray around and got sick of him running. Hagler also had trouble with Ray's footwork. Inside, or in a small ring, Duran would take Leonard every time. He still won the first one with no doubt. Styles make fights.

Such a shame how Kirkland fell into alcohol/substance abuse, this together with homelessness, I'm surprised he lived as long as he did.
    RIP 🥊🥊🥊

This video mentions his fight against Hagler. What everyone forgets is Hagler had a cut by his eye that he got outside of the ring, so he had to fight a completely different fight against Duran to keep that cut from opening up. If he would have fought his normal fight the entire fight, he would have knocked Duran out. Hagler only fought his normal style in the later rounds of that fight.
