- Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! In today’s video, we’re taking a trip back to 1991. Sugar Ray Leonard, fresh off a two-year retirement following his third fight with Roberto Duran, is stepping back into the ring. This time, he’s up against the quick and powerful Terry Norris. Leonard already has an impressive record, having faced legends like Hearns, Hagler, and Benitez. Now, he’s looking to add another big name to his resume.

Not quitting in round 11 showed why he is such a champ
Heart of a Lion!
EXACTLY Norris was a beast a young one at that, I'm a massive Hagler fan I personally don't think Marvin was robbed Ray boxed smart and found a way to win.
Sugar Ray Leonard. Magic. My favourite fighter growing up in the 80's.
He got his ass kicked.
@@JamesWalsh-kc6hr yes he did. He was old by boxing standards and worn out from so many incredible fights. His speed was gone.
@@AB7F9 Thing is ,he thought he had enough of those skills to beat Norris? Big mistake.
@@JamesWalsh-kc6hr Every fighter thinks that at the end till it becomes painfully obvious that it's over. Roy Jones jnr, Ali..all of them. Canalo will end the same unless he sees it coming like Mayweather jnr did.
@@AB7F9Good respectful comments buddy, I would have liked to see the outcome with a prime Ray Leonard against Norris.
He went out like a true warrior! Taking that much time off between fights at that age……
Sugar Ray Leonard was past his prime. He retired a few times before this fight, and each time he came back, he got older and older.
You’re absolutely right
While I agree I would think he wouldn't want to tarnish his record and legacy. But he did. But I give him credit for still doing it. However I will never forgive him ducking Michael Nunn.
@@tonymorrell2353 I will never forgive Ray Leonard for ducking Aron Pryor
@LAVEGAN83 Pryor fought his entire career at 140 while Ray was a five division champion who started at welterweight. So when exactly did Ray duck Pryor? Was he supposed to drop to 140, lol. If Pryor was serious about fighting Ray, he should've moved up like Duran did. You guys crack me up with that bullsh!t. Smfh
@williamallen7386 Arron Pryor offered to move up. Even showed up to Sugar Ray Leonard press conference. And asked for the fight. Sugar Ray openly ducked Aaron Pryor. This is not a secret.
IMO this loss and especially the KO loss against Hector Camacho were a blessing in disguise for SRL. It prevented him from taking more fights and joining the punch drunk slurring speech club. So he's now, many years thereafter, healthy and wealthy. I'm happy for these two losses!
I'm happy he was very smart with his money too, most boxers also stick around too long because of money problems
@@b9479 I think in Leonards case it was more ego than money that got him back in boxing. At the time George Foreman and Larry Holmes had a very successful comeback and inspired others to do the same.
The Norris fight could make you punch-drunk by itself, he had so many other tough fights..he could've easily ended up punch-drunk, others did with less damage.
Duran also has wars but never got punch drunk, that head movement served him well, that's why Ray always gave shouts to him, both is great.
@@TheNeorch true, it seems like all of the four kings, except Thomas didn't suffer from long term problems
Ray leonard still put on a good fight, that is what makes a champion
Sorry that was not a good fight or performance by Ray........
There's no pleasing some people 😂😂
Sugar Ray a true legend! Hate seeing him get beat up but it doesnt take away his greatness. Terry was a great fighter as well. Love the way he showed some mercy at the end. Great champions❤❤
I would have loved to have seen Terry Norris versus Gerald McClellan
Or against Nigel Benn.
Most people (including me) was so impressed with Leonard when he fought Hagler - that we thought he won. Friend of mine (who thought Hagler won) - said to watch it again. Now I'm CONVINCED Hagler won.
i agree as well
Never thought Hagler lost, bad decision.
It was probably a draw.
I had Ray winning. But that's just me. And I'm a Hagler guy.
You just wanted him to win so much because you liked him. He did the flurries at the end of the rounds and stole rounds that way in the judges' eyes. I never liked Marvin when he was fighting as he seemed like a bully and never smiled. Once he retired, he never stopped smiling and had a lovely smile. Then I liked him and re-watched his fights. He was great.🙂
I'll say this; if Tommy Hearns had Leonards chin, hed have been the greatest fighter who ever got into the ring
I Believe He would've retired undefeated.
Completely agree my friend!!!!
No
sugar could take a blow boi
💯💯💯
Even older sugar was still tough and skilled put up courageous fight
The fans of Hagler just can't accept that a long retired Leonard has beaten and humiliated their idol into retirement.
@@AnnoyedBreakingWaves-xg7yn correct. They still aren’t over that beat down. 😂
Haggler was good but after Leonard he knew this beat down was coming, and he ducked out. His pride wouldn’t let him go out like this. Leonard was driven by glory.
I gave Sugar Ray Leonard a lot of credit for this fight. Leonard was doing what he normally did in the ring, but Leonard's timing was often so off that Norris just kept hitting Leonard throughout the contest. Leonard in his prime was often able to avoid those hard jabs and shots. The classic ring-rust finally got to Leonard and Terry Norris was too good of a youthful fighter simply exposing Leonard's age in the ring. I gave Leonard a lot of props during this fight. He kept going despite knowing full well that he was not going to beat such a young, raw superior boxer.
@@ramonpooser2434 **Hagler**
Leonard was a shadow of his best here. Hats off to him though for congratulating Norris at the end.
What a storied career. What a warrior . Thanks Sugar. You are Class
Terry again hit someone who was already down. Crazy.
Yep,that's quite unseemingly! It's not a ' Streetfight' where anything goes!
Never known a fighter like it in 35 years of watching boxing!! Obsessed with getting DQ’d - madness 😳
dude has serious impulse control issues
He should've been Disqualified!! WOW!!
Referees job to protect the fighter, not boxers job
One of my favorite fighters, and one of the greatest, as well. Sugar Ray is the definition of a champ.
I wish boxing was like this today. Back in the 80s it was so awesome.
Ray only had a couple of nights like this: this one and Camacho. He never got beat up in the first Duran fight: just got outfought. He was buzzed quite frequently in the second Hearns fight but not badly hurt. No quit in him.❤
I get where you’re coming from but honestly Ray needed help to walk after the Duran fight. He took hellacious punishment but always fought back . But be honest,he was hurt,he just wouldn’t let it stop him.
Was and still is my all time hero. 👍👍
Pride kills all. Ray, just like Ali, couldn't accept that he wasn't the man or fighter that he was when he was younger. It happens to us all
Not sure it's Pride? It's certain Sportsmen who put so much of themselves into their Profession, they struggle to adapt to ' Civvy St' and then they just can't walk away!
It's all about that last huge payday.
He didn't need the money, he still craved the glory.
Leonard vinha de dois anos inativo... ainda assim Norris tratava de ir pro clinche qdo era ameaçado; já Leonard, lutou limpo... como sempre. Grande campeão... realmente, era uma tarefa árdua bater o Norris no auge.
Terry Norris beat John "The Beast" Mugabi? I forgot about that. Mugabi was unbeatable and used to routinely knock out his opponents.
Mugabi / Hagler is still one of my favorite fights of all time-
@@dunningkruger3774 Yah, Hagler showed "The Beast" what's up. Lol
After the Hagler's fight he had nothing left on him
@@skinking2252Your right, that was the only occasion I thought Marvin might lose John went toe to toe with Marvin big mistake.
This is the fight that made me a Terry Norris fan!!
My oldest brother was a big Sugar Ray Leonard fan, and I was still upset that Marvelous Marvin Hagler got robbed against Sugar Ray..
And, I was looking for a new favorite fighter, Terry Norris stepped right in, lol
Right on 👍
>got robbed against Sugar Ray
No
@@user-wp8ot2ny2m
Yes, Hagler was robbed
@@user-wp8ot2ny2m Yes 😂
@@eljay3390 Leonard won the fight. Could he have beaten Hagler again if they fought 9 more times? No. But on that night, he won. I'm a bigger fan of Hagler, but unlike other Hagler fans, I'm capable of objectivity. To claim Hagler was robbed is laughable. You act like he dominated or something ridiculous like that. This wasn't Pernell Whitaker vs Chavez
Marvellous Marvin Hagler was robbed by Sugar Ray Leonard, who deep down knew he lost to Hagler & refused to give Hagler a rematch. So I was delighted to see Terry Norris beat some humility into Leonard.
he taught Hagler a boxing lesson
Hagler definitely seems to have won it. Unfortunately, Hagler should have taken the decision out of the judge's hands. It was the only way to leave no room for the judges
@@ardradiva The lesson was "play to the judges". I'm not a big fan of that lesson, but it's reality
I stopped watching boxing for years after that robbery in April 1987
@@ardradiva what boxing lesson, fool? When all he was doing was running and grabbing and grabbing and running
Ray was suppose to fight Julian Jackson because Jackson had knocked out Terry Norris...So Ray refused to fight the winner "The Hawk Jackson" because Ray thought Terry was easy work...However, it back fired ....
Ray was smart enough to avoid Julian Jackson. Thank goodness. Jackson's power could have permanently harmed the older Sugar Ray.
@@leoncolwin8645Absolutely
Leonard was the carl Lewis of boxing , he rain from Jackson and Pryor.
Jackson would have been an entirely different matchup. Can't really extrapolate anything from.the Norris fight as to how he'd do against Jackson.
@@leoncolwin8645 actually I think Ray might have done better vs Jackson, his problem vs Norris was speed. Julian didn't have this kind of speed, and Ray might have been able to outbox him.
Sugar was a complete package. Loved watching him fight.
Leonard was an amazing boxer with the heart of a lion. With that said, I did not mind seeing this. Leonard robbed Hagler real hard and the draw vs Hearns as well.
I never liked Leonard and thoroughly enjoyed this beatdown by Norris. But I too thought they robbed Hagler until I rewatched it a few years ago. Hagler let Leonard outclass him. It was frustrating to watch.
Leonard didn't rob anyone. The judges may have but Sugar didn't judge his own rights lol
How does Sugar rob the Marvelous One... RIP... Hagler got the judges he wanted and Sugar got the ring size... 🛑 The 🧢
Norris beat the poop out of Ray, but Ray never gave up.
Your videos look and sound amazing!
The only fighter in defeat that still looks INCREDIBLE
Peace to all those fighters.
Hagler was my favorite from that era.
Did anyone see the fury vs usic fight...
The wilder vs xiang... I went and watched the thriller on manilla just to remind me of greatness...
Thankyou Ali and Joe and George etc.
When great meant GREAT !!!
A valiant effort by Sugar Ray Leonard. I still think that next to Ali, Leonard is the greatest of all time.
Leonard cannot beat Aaron Pryor ,Floyd Mayweather or JCC and used a false card of 118-110 to steal a victory from Hagler*i remember
Marvin lost he couldn't figure Ray out, and I Idolised Marvin Best to ever lace em up in my opinion RIP MARVELLOUS MARVIN HAGLER ❤🥊🥊🥊
I will never understand why Terry Norris just kept hitting downed opponents
Me too, he must've had horrible impulse control
Gerald Mcleanan comes to mind he had habit of doing that
Suger Ray was a Star ⭐ in every way. Talent, curisma, Looks, Power, Granite Chin. When he beat Wilfredo Benitez..I wanted Suger to lose but I knew he was gonna be bigger than what he already was.
Thanks for the video, BOXING AFTER TALK
Mahhnnn.....I do miss this type of competition in boxing💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Hit him while he was down but the acting at 4:50 is world class
Truly it felt and as said by Sugar himself, that only he is the true successor of Ali, his inspiration and a father figure.
Man Leonard was crazy! That man was ready to die in there!
I would’ve DQ Norris. Dirt ball move hitting a guy while he’s down.
Abso Lutely
He was good at that😂
Great job Terry is a real warrior
A king among kings !!!
Don’t say Sugar wasn’t a Warrior.
No doubt, I was proud of Leonard sticking it out against Norris during this fight.
It's like Sugar Ray said to himself "Yo I'm in the ring" but he did look shook before the fight started.
Look at the size of Norris Larry Holmes would have been frightened 😂
I didn't remember this one going 12 rounds. I faintly remember Leonard's team carrying him back to the corner in at least one later round. I figured his team threw in the towel but that didn't happen. Norris was younger, fresher and bigger than Leonard who didn't have the legs or reflexes anymore to stay out of trouble.
Love the Rabbit Punch the ref took from Ray at the end of the 6th. He just shook it off!
I was never a SR fan, but he was great! The man was MM Hagler. Travel well!
Ray failed to realize Terry Norris is legit.
Ray was chasing the ba
Play stupid games and win stupid 🏆 prizes 😮
Ray knew that but he had 15 million reasons to put on the gloves 🤣☝️
Suprised being knocked down twice and losing every single round SRL didn’t get a draw. Hearns style. Ref & judges couldn’t even cheat him a win/draw. Enjoyed watching that beat down of
SRL
So difficult to watch, but this is why I put Sugar Ray Leonard ahead of Floyd as the GOAT, he was willing to put it on the line with serious competition as he aged.
SRL has had the heart of a lion.
What the Hell are you talking about ?* Leonard lost to Terry Norris
3:12 Dude said Roberto Duran was 16 years old and probably earned a couple of mangos 🤦♂️🤣🤣🤣 and he was dead axx serious🤣 viscous!!!
He is probably right. Duran grew up in poverty in Panama
Duran was king.
Norris was a very good boxer, and a great fighter. He was crazy aggressive, and that cost him a few times - and it cost him a lot after his career was over. Ray was too far past his prime here to take on Terry Norris. The spirit was willing, but the body just couldn't do what it used to. Looking at how many times he looked completely spent and ready to quit, only to come back with a good offensive flurry it really is mind boggling. You can tell that he's battling exhaustion as much as he is Terry Norris here. There are several times that it looks like he wants to quit, but he just won't let himself do it. Maybe it was the memory of how bitter the victory over Duran was when he quit that pushed him on. Who knows? But this fight is a testament to what a competitor he was.
There was no robbery. Look at the punch count. It was a very close fight.
My childhood idol , what an amazing fighter Ray Leonard
The size difference was very evident, Norris must have had one Hell of a weight cut!
Do yo know I was thinking EXACTLY the same, he looked a stone heavier than Ray.
Both landing some savage body shots
Exceptional gentleman ❤❤❤❤❤
I m so proud 0:21 of you stylistics
Geez... Sugar Ray was taking some punishment in this fight. Surprised he was even countering so well...
One of the best 👍
if Terry Norris had a world class chin he might still be undefeated. one of the greatest offensive boxers I've ever seen.
Ray put up a valiant effort!!! This is what you won’t see from many of today’s boxers. Devin Haney is doing what Ray did and that’s fighting the best without handpicking. He’s done great just as Ray has done
Heartbreaking fight but classic match up between 2 legends 💯
Loved this fight. He brutally punished Leonard throughout the fight. Great way to destroy a legend!
A bit shallow , Ray was about done Norris was a young lion
What’s crazy to me is Bud is older right now than Sugar was at the time of this fight. And even this is still 2 years removed from Sugar’s last real title form.
Some ppl peak at different ages. Ray leonard peaked early, crawford didn't.
Ray was more active in his career than Bud.
The legend My fav boxer Ray leonard wow ...
Terrible Terry Norris was my Saturday night fight favorite boxer..I loved that 🥷🏿 when I was a kid...He came to fight bro....😅😅😅😅😅😅😅Terrible Terry Norris is a legend
Damn. That was a shoot out.
Good video guys
This was a bloody good fight!! Leonard's timing was just slightly off. Age gets the better of everyone in the end.....
One of the greatest too ever do it 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Billy Blanks was like,”Let’s get the allstar Tai Bo vhs done now!!!”
I would have loved to have seen Terry Norris go up against Gerald McClellan
Ray had one of the best chins of all times. He took that beating like a man.
100% For For sugar ray he was a warrior in this fight!!!
Cant speak to Terry, but i met his brother Orlen Norris. Dude was a great guy! Gave me a couple of autographed photos of live ring photos. He fought Tyson. It was a no contest. Nicest dude i ever met! I tried to pay him some cash for all the photos, he declined.
Norris was like a combination of all the boxers sugar Ray Leonard faced
Fantastic guy. A brilliant boxer and Gentleman too. (Shame he demolished my hero "Dave Boy Green" but they became good friends after!)
Leonard was a warrior never give up.
Boxeadorasasos ambos, Norris fuertísimo ganó la pelea de calle, Leonard peleó con mucho corazón, pero no pudo con Norris. Grandes boxeadores 👍
Leonard thought he would be able to catch Norris on the chin and knock him out. He didnt realize the strength and handsoeed of Norris would be so difficult to deal with.
One of the reasons Sugar Ray got so rusty by the time he was 33(relatively still young) was because he would spar hard during sessions, which takes a lot out of a fighter. He also did not keep himself in peak shape during his 2 year retirement, which is the worst thing for a boxer. Ray needed to take a few tune up fights after that long layoff. Not even Ali fought for the title right away after his 3 year layoff. George Foreman was out of the ring for about 10 years and fought a bunch of tune up fights before challenging Holyfield for the title .Ring rust is why he lost this fight. He would commit the same mistake with Macho Camacho.
The way you said Duran’s nickname made me gag as a spanish speaking latino 😂😂
I gag every time I hear spanish.
I SAW THAT FIGHT, NORRIS BRUTALIZED LEONARD. HE HAD NO CHANCE. BUT NORRIS WAS A DIRTY FIGHTER. SOMEONE WHO WOULD HIT YOU WHILE YOU WERE DOWN, OR IF YOUR BACK WAS TURNED.
Corectamundo, the hawk ironed Terry out like a pair of my flares in th 60s
Leonard is one of boxing's greats. Lewis didn't have what it takes to be a great boxer. Well done to Leonard for almost beating a much younger fighter
Sugar Ray is one of the best ever!!
It’s like watching an execution
I’m glad I was in DC when Sugar Ray Leonard was fighting !
Sugar ray one of the goats
This wasn’t a peak Leonard ….his Radar had started to fail and his speed had gone …….but a peak Sugar Ray at light welterweight was supreme….unrivalled.. .. oh so Sweet …
That was the first and last ass whooping that I saw Sugar Ray Leonard take live on TV. I felt so bad for him. I didn't know who Terry Norris was. I learned REAL FAST.
Hagler looked old and shot and plodded his way to 12 rounds while Sugar landed the quick eye catching combinations while putting on a show ! Common man !!
😂
Sugar Ray much respect
Sugar was a class act
Father TIME UNDEFEATED 😢
Ray always had ❤️
Nobody in todays boxing can take that many blows to the head and body and survive
Sugar Ray had the fastest hands I've ever seen in my lifetime anyway 💯💯💯💥💥💥
4:50 what a flop 😂😂😂😂
Leonard’s return hurt his legacy. He was a very good WW. After that not so much. The WBC loved Ray which allowed him to get the decision over Hagler. It was a set up and Marvin’s corner was oblivious.
I hate this fight but I love when Julian The Hawk Jackson stopped Terry Norris.
