      Floyd Sr was actually amazing. He was a freak, but he got caught with the wrong crowd, drugs, etc. If he has the training, discipline, diet and conditioning of an elite athlete, took it seriously, he probably would have steam rolled Leonard. One of many "what ifs", but thru witnessing his father's failures, Floyd Jr became the GOAT and super disciplined.

    • @eac1235
      @eac1235 6 месяцев назад +5

      The best??? Uh no...Duran far outshines Leonard. Remember he was a champion for 3 years by the time Leonard won the 76 Olympics. Larry Holmes was better, and a guy by the name of Muhammad Ali was better as well. A slew of Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Marvin Hagler was better ,regardless of half blind judges. Had they fought in 82 ,Ray would have left on a stretcher. Now with all that he is definitely a top 10 Welterweight. As far as middleweight barely top 20. Beating a faded Hagler doesn't make him all time great and then fighting for a made up super middleweight title and light heavyweight title ,while a little impressive doesn't make him all time great. I still would say that he's a top 100 all time fighter. Mostly because he fought greats who had already peaked such as Hagler and Duran. Benitez hardly trained. Hearns was a great victory but fight 2 ,Tommy got hosed ,he clearly won and even Ray admitted he lost as well. Ray was a media darling meant to take Ali's place. That and the fact that Angelo Dundee was his trainer. Any fight that Dundee was part of that was controversial his guy always won. Maybe because his brother Chris Dundee had very strong mafia ties but that's another story. Best you ever saw ???? Only if you had tunnel vision.

      I appreciate your sentiment, but I must beg to differ. Pure boxing purists, and everyone else knew and appreciated Sugar Ray Leonard. The video, itself, featured here, attests to that very fact. After winning Gold in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Leonard soon turned pro. He was known more popularly as a fighter for the 80s. He was acknowledged as one of the "Four Kings" of boxing, in the company of fellow champions, Roberto Duran, Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. They created the greatest era of boxing, south of the heavyweight division, for the welter through middleweight divisions. The iconic "War" between Hagler-Hearns is still talked about, more than 40 years later. To this very day, "Hagler-Heatns" has become the standard term for a much anticipated showdown between two explosive fighters meeting in their prime. Leonard Hearne was also an epic showdown. These fighters all faced one another, and dodged no one. So, no, none of them are forgotten for their dynamic contributions to the sport of boxing. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

      I'd have to disagree. To this day more people know who SRL is compared to many guys who have belts today. You can still see him on TV making commercials, because his name is a brand that sells.
      Back in the day he was a _worldwide_ superstar, and he had endorsement deals with multiple A brands. You could see him on TV making commercials for Ford, Diet Coke, 7 Up, etc.

    Fantastic fight. Dundee had his overcompensating for the fact that Floyd was legitimately giving SRL a MUCH better scrap than they seemed to except. There’s also an incredibly strange moment in this fight that I actually think think is one of the most rare I’ve ever seen in couple dozen years watching boxing.
    At 8:02 both throw a right hand that would have dramatically changed the fight - imo Ray would have sparked Floyd out cold in the dirt and while we now know Ray’s chin is iron, at this point if this landed I think Ray was in trouble. Floyd seemed to have seen Ray throw it last second fully loaded up and rushed his shot only to divert late and attempt to deflect with his glove. and Ray 100% calculated Floyd was landing first hence why he slightly pulled it and braced try to slide out just a bit to let it glance . But then their punches actually punch eacother mid air with what I still think is their wrists colliding. You can tell it hurt Floyd BAD watch his right arm go limp for a second and steps back stunned. I’ve scaled the image up cleaning the edges it doesn’t land on Floyd. It just confused the hell out of him and you could tell he was in pain. Shocked he didn’t shatter his wrist. He really did rise to the level of his competitor in this night you gotta give him that .

    I like Mayweather Senior better, but Junior is a more skilled boxer because he avoided getting hit all those years. By any knock out blow. 50 fights and avoided getting knocked out is a really good skill. Call him a hugger runner whatever as Filipino and Pacquiao countryman I have utter respect for Mayweather boxing skills, and his Philly shell is honed to perfection. Many boxer use it but nobody like Floyd does.

    Sugar ray and Mayweather were both top fighters... sugar ray just had speed and the precision to hit a target dead on. The shell was not able to cover many of the hits he took to the top or temple... also that left hook sugar ray had was devastating... props to both fighters and their careers...

    Teofilo Stevenson is not a 'what if'. Even as an Aussie, I know that. Amateur boxer for 20 years and a triple Olympic gold medalist. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, De La Hoya, Whittaker, Floyd Patterson, Leon Spinks, Michael Spinks etc etc, all won a gold medal...one. Who is to say what route is the toughest - personally I believe the amateur route, with the lack of money and support to be much tougher....
    Now we talk about Usain Bolt winning golds at 3 successive games, or Phelps doing the same....don't forget Teofilo Stevenson - he did it way before them both... 3 world championships, 3 gold medals and a record of 302/332, with 22 losses and 8 draws.....legend.

    I watched as many of the Ray Leonard fights as I could in the day. As much as I like to hear about all these great fighters today that are truly great. I don't think I have seen his match. He took on all the best in his time including some he had no chance to win against and he did anyway. He proved to be fast as lightning, and tougher than nails as well as the stamina to take it to the limit. If we could reach back in time and grab Ray Leonard to put into the ring today, I would bet on Ray every time. He won in the Olympics against veterans of the east block communist countries when he was still a youngster. He was one bad dude.

    I remember watcthing this fight, I pulled for Leonard because he was so closely tied to Ali - the Fighting styles so closely resembled Ali. Ali had not yet retired and Angelo Dundee displayed his Condidence on Sugar Ray Leanard. He fought so much like a Ali at a lower weight Limit. His connections to Ali were obvious at that time.
