- Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! Tonight, we journey back to 1984, a pivotal year in boxing history marked by Sugar Ray Leonard's dramatic comeback after a two-year hiatus. With his sights set on the formidable Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Leonard first had to overcome Kevin Howard and shake off his ring rust. Having already bested legends like Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns, many anticipated an easy victory for Leonard. However, the night would prove them wrong.

The treat in this video is seeing Marvelous Marvin Hagler smiling. 😄
Hagler didn’t laugh when ray beat him, infact he cried and retired
@@robertcolcombe6893 there's a video of the 2 talking bout a rematch but Leonard refused to give him one
@@robertcolcombe6893 nevr happened. fight was fixed ,fact. i was in the fight biz
@@robertcolcombe6893 Marvin did NOT cry after the fight with Ray !
After his retirement Marvin would be continually smiling, jovial and friendly .
Tyson crying while talking about SRL is one of the most endearing moments I’ve seen.
I'm pretty sure he was high.
@@tyr7859 This fact makes it even more endearing.
@@filmandcomposition This is true
Ray always had the class to admit that Tommy Hearns won their second fight. Great speed with his legs and hands, those incredible combination, smarts and heart. The complete fighter.
Everyone says so even Hearns but it’s not so.Leonard clearly won that fight. But because everyone says otherwise, and with Hagler backing Tommy Hearns no one wants to say otherwise.Even Leonard graciously admits that Thomas Hearns won the fight. But one more round, and Sugar Ray Leonard would have certainly stopped him.
I’m 75yrs. Old and I watched most all the fights back in the day. I really liked watching Sugar Ray and was always impressed with his cardio. He was quick but not the power of a lot of fighters. Anyway I miss those days they were more sane!
Howard earned a lot of respect in this
A prime sugary Leonard beats all welterweights of today
Agree
A prime Sugar Ray Leonard beats ANY welterweight EVER.
I think Crawford would give him a go
Terrence Crawford NEVER fought a welterweight anywhere near the level of a sugar Ray Leonard. A washed up Kellbrook, near retirement Porter and a clearly deteriorating Post accident Errol Spence don’t count and certainly don’t come remotely close to A Prime Ray Leonard who had EVERYTHING going for him skill wise. I’ve seen lesser fighters put hands on Crawford and none of them had even a third of the ability that Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Duran had. And these were the caliber of fighters Ray faced in his prime. Legitimate Hall of Fame killers who were all in their PRIMES As well. A mentally tired Porter who half trained and was pondering retirement, an inactive, diminished Spence, and a broken washed up Kellbrook don’t compare. And even if they were in their Primes Thomas Hearns Alone would destroy any of them , let alone Ray Leonard. Those guys were cut from a different cloth. No rehydration clauses, special weight restriction cut offs, marinating a fight for years till the other guy slows down etc….. they fought when it counted in their absolute PRIMES.
💯💯💯
Love that moniker, "Sugar Ray." He will always be one of my favorites of all time.
Leonard was not the only boxing great having that moniker. Sugar Ray Robinson career and exploits maybe more than Leonard.
Boxing After Dark is STILL the best-EVAH boxing channel on YT! Thanks for another great and exciting documentary!
No, you're the best Lou!
I just subscribed because of your comment but I’ll be the Judge of it and keep you posted, 👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Yes I concur, this is a great channel.
Yo!!! Did you see that Uncle Ray Lenard was knocked down by a “Head Clash”
Omg!!! I don’t remember that at all…
Plus Uncle Ray’s targeting and body shots were incredible, 👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
@@ayo30s I think you'll like it a lot! BAD brings rare footage, a corner man's eyes-on awareness, and a decidedly cinematic approach to his films!
Leonard quite simply the best combination puncher of all time
O yeah
He was not only one of the very best of all time; he was one of most enjoyable boxers to watch. I loved his speed, footwork, lightning fast combinations and his swagger.
That was a premature stoppage Howard shouldve been given an 8 count maybe but he deserved a chance to keep going.
I agree. It was a BS stoppage.
@@highdefboxing8056- just like the hearns Leonard first fight no 8 count for Tommy hearns premature stoppage just like Howard srl the media darling of the wbc and wba boxing he didn't like giving rematches either, or ducked people i could go on about this.....

"Tuesday Night Fights" with Al Bernstein was a really great show back in the day.
Used to watch it before reporting for Third Shift at the gun factory.

Sugar ray is one of the goats

I remember watching this live on HBO, and thinking maybe this would be Ray's last fight. Boy was I wrong!🥊🥊 Great episode! I love your channel!!
Sugar was the one who got me interested in boxing. Watching him control the ring when I was a kid was a wonder to me.
I was never a advocate of Ray, but he was a great fighter, but MARVELOUS, was that guy!
Sugar Ray beat Hagler
Marvelous won that fight. Any true boxing fan saw that. Those pitty pat flurries at the end of rounds weren't effective. Judges ruined that call

I had the honor in my youth of being at this fight. Incidentally - his younger sister, who resembled him (like a spitting image), walked by where I was standing on the rear entrance/exit of the Marriott Hotel, in route to The Centrum in Worcester MA. ❤🥊🥊
His speed of punching is just incredible
That's the definition of anyone who is great at anything, they can take a fall but they always come back stronger.

@@BoxingAfterDark- Thank you very much!
Every boxer has that one fighter that was a nightmare for them no matter how great you was.
B.A.D. is my favorite boxing channel! I another classic!
Sugar Ray waited 3 more years before accepting to fight Marvin Hagler. This tells you who was the better fighter at that time.
You no ray was one off the best fighter I ever seen he gave us his all that's all I can say about ray love him😂
He had extremely quick hands. Maybe, even quicker than Ali's.
Ray was great in his prime gold in the Olympics and a great pro to god bless him
Sugar #1 Topgun
Still my all-time hero!
Great narration, good quality fight clips without shitty music. the best historical fights in the world. what else could you want in a boxing channel ? you deserve a million subs sir
Howard was a tough customer, and the Ref stopping the contest was proper. Howard was defencless under the barrage by Ray after being staggered by his strong followup left hook. That was the exchange that finally crack the armored chin of Howard.
Sugar Ray Leonard's SPEED is what stands out to me, especially after watching these fights in 2024.
Tommy climbed all those weight classes. That was impressive.
Ray was murderous in his prime Kevin became enraged but he was visibly shaken badly, premature stoppage? maybe but the inevitable was coming Ray was gaining momentum and getting stronger Howard was going to get severely injured all bravado aside he had his moments against Ray and so did Floyd Sr. when Ray needed to be all That!,in his prime years he was one of The most Gutsy S.O.B’s to ever lace’em Up! Undeniably Tough 🥊!!
Your videos are great, do one on the first Arguello vs. Pryor fight? That, was a legendary fight!
Why didn't Hagler get a rematch? He deserved one.
Hell of a fight, that one. 👍
Dude did the stanky leg after that right cross 😂😂😂😂😂
RESPECT! ✊🏾
Fave fighter, Pete from England
Howard made a good account of himself by sending Ray to the canvas, despite losing. He deserves a rematch..
I wish he would’ve fought Mike mcCallum. And Aaron Pryor.
Leonard was a great technician. He could have boxed Howard like he did Hagler rather than go toe to toe
Liked, subbed.
I’m 73. Never even had a beer or smoked anything. It’s the downfall of many a man and a complete and devastating scourge to Families and Society in general. Don’t kid yourself.
You Control YOU.
How is this dude standing! He’s eating so many big shots from Sugar Ray!? Wtf, that just doesn’t make sense.
A BS stoppage. Man wasn't even down.
Kelvin Howard was a beast but haggler was a monster
Still didn't take the Title from Marvin, it was given to him.
without a doubt, a top-five welterweight!
He’s top 1 or 2
Top 5....? He`s No 1.
GOAT
How does everyone feel Howard would have done in a rematch? Same outcome, would he have done better or would Leonard have dominated after a better camp?
Edit: Looking at the performances from both fighters after this match, I don't see how Leonard wouldn't have wiped the floor with Howard in a rematch.
Wasnt that Leonard's comeback fight after the brief ( first) retirement because of the detached retina? Howard was a tough fighter , who'd do battle t to the end and beyond any challenge lol. I think Leonard retired immediately ( again) after the fight. So, the idea of a rematch was not part of his plans at the time. It simply didnt, and wasnt, going to happen. Just remember that Leonard won despite being away from the ring maybe two years, came back and won anyway.
Benitez and Hearns deserved earlier rematches and an earlier rubber match with Duran as well. And the late denial of rematch with Hagler, he waited over a year, tells us that this "legend" has a handful of asterisks and question marks. He was a media darling and handled that way. The sad thing was the sparring partner's wrecklessness did that his eye in.
@@1InterestedNot- that detached retina happened in the 1st hearns fight you can see it plain as day i agree with you on 90 % of what you said though he didn't give any rematches and ducked a few other boxers the media darling is spot on
I would really like to see you do a video on Victor Ortiz Jr vs Andre Berto.
such a good fight. still wondering how Ortiz got up from the uppercut!
His worst nightmare was Duran. Why did Duran quit the 2nd fight? Because he refused to play by the new "point" rules that Leonard brought with him when he turned pro. Changed boxing forever....Sad.
I've always thought Leonard was overrated, and got a few gifts from the judges in some of his fights.
Scorecards were wonky to be fair. For instance on David’s official card He gave SRL a 10-8 in round 3 despite no knockdown which isn’t in line with convention in 1984. Then in round 4 he gave Howard a 10-9. This is objective and incorrect scored 2 round swing alone against Howard. On this card his final outcome was 79-74. He also gave 2 rounds a 10-10. Again in 1984, it wasn’t normal to I hand out 10-10 rounds so casually. 10-10 rounds by any rule set are meant to be incredibly rare.
Only one referee awarded Howard the proper 10-8 in round 4 as the rules dictate specifically in case of a knockdown all else being equal. Even Sugars biggest fan wouldn’t say he did enough to overcompensate for that knockdown in that round haha that’s silly. George, the middle ref who correctly scored the 10-8 also was the only one who gave Leonard round 8…. Which… idk how the actual hell you do that. Howard pieced him up especially at the end of the round. Leonard kept throwing this double hook this round and Howard picked it apart scoring big. You can tell Ray was pissdd after that round and didn’t wanna risk the scoring he tried to confront Howard after 8 and Howard just shunned it .
Ultimately I still think it was a great stoppage . He had no legs and couldn’t even get his arms up to grab Leonard. 10 would have been tragic if they made it. But the scoring was very very odd. Still a great stoppage and a win for Ray
I don't think Howard was ahead on the scorecards like he claims, but it was a close fight going into the final rounds. I will say that the ref stopped the fight too soon, way too soon, and I agree with Howard in that they may have done it to ensure that Sugar Ray won the fight. But I didn't agree with Howard in that he took all of Ray's shots and wasn't hurt. 😆 He was out on his feet when they stopped it, but that Ref should have let Ray knock him out and not stop it like that. It takes away from the fight when they do something like that, Kevin Howard deserved to go out on his shield if that's what he wanted because he had fought a tough fight up until then. It's just messed up that they stopped it like that. SMH Oh well, great fight anyways!😊
I first saw ray beat up dave boy Green that was it I was hooked
Howard was a tough fighter with good hands but the ref knew it was over. Howard literally tried to wrestle Ray to avoid those painful blows. Ray was not playing with him and if ref hadnt stopped it ray finishes him.
Another favor for Sugar Ray , that guy was not out of it
Eubank jr 😂😂😂 tell me your joking without laughing
That fight was prematurely stopped by the ref
Yes it was. A political decision.
@@percyvaughan let me say this to you in order for Kevin a unknown to win he would have to knock Leonard out I'm a huge fan of SRL and he was not really winning the fight and the only reason they would have given it to SR is because he would have generated money another words he was the Vegas flunkee he was a drawing card to the public fortunately Kevin was not get it
@@GregBoyd-qg3il I remember watching this fight as a kid. Leonard was on pace to win an ugly split decision. Sugar Ray Robinson loss a decision to a tough black contender on his back with no rematch. I am a fan of Hagler, Leonard, and Hearns.
@@percyvaughan I lovex all of them but Leonard was my favorite like I said if that fight would have went the distance they would have given it to Leonard plain and simple
I was at the Ken Howard fight
Loved Leonard, he had it all, speed, movement, and knockout power in both hands,
and he was the best welterweight of all time, in my opinion. You could make an
argument that Hearns was the 2nd best all time, but lacked stamina, so maybe not.
People will always dislike Sugar ray Leonsrd for being too much of a showy boxer but outside of his eye injury he fought everything vand everybody other than Aaron Pryor which was a risk due to that injury and not enough my on the table at that time.. Hed best these welterweights of today in his prime for sure.
Most GREATS If "IF" They Had STOPPED When They Done IT ALL Would Be The BEST There WAS !😮
6:54 ??? are they blind? Leonard clearly got head-butted! wow.
I'll salute u
Sugar ray was a miniature ALI.maybe more power at his weight class!
Stoppage little early, but he was about to go.
Anyone else think the angle @ 6:53 looks like a dead on headbutt? Am I just getting old?.??
I though the same but it wasn’t a headbutt, look at Howard’s head, it didn’t go back at all.
Kevin came to fight that's fight that's for sure but sugar ray was very special fighter
6:20 RIGHT HOOK
Styles make good fights,i think sugar eay in his prine, against oscar de la hoya would of been good
very possible he could have gone longer this is B.S cause they loved Leonard.
SRL was one of the GOAT fighters.
Was Marvin really laughing at the knock down or was that just clever editing?
Clever editing
Small typos in the graphicsLeonard fought Hagler in 87 not 97. And Hearns rematch was 89 not 87. But anybody watching this probably knows that. Larry Merchant disgreeing with the stoppage is no suprise!
Howard was lucky the ref stopped it IMO.
Leonard was get n ready to unload an arsenal of punches that would have done serious damage. to Howard.
You could see those wicked body shots by Leonard starting to break Howard down and to set him up for those head shots and Leonard's big right hand.
If the ref had not stopped the fight Howard would have looked like Hearns on the ropes in their first fight only this time it would have been target practice by Leonard unloading those big guns on Bruh Howard at will.
Much respect for Howard though.
He was game. He is a Philly Fighter but Leonard was a world class Top Tier fighter and he was too good for Howard even with the long layoff and the ring rust.
🗣♊️👤Rising
This is why I could not stand Leonard, refs were always looking to help him as well as judges. He was awarded a few fights he didn't win.
They did stopped the fight too early tho
the time with real boxers
Fight was stoped to early they needed to make tht Mega fight with Hagler
Questionable stoppage
This wasn't Leonards first knockdown in his career! He got knocked down in 79 by Dick Ecklund. I could swear it. Or was it a slip lol
He knocked down a few times the 2nd fight with Tommy hearns twice- Terry Norris and a few others
Those hand of sugar ray man both Mayweather probably got beat
He could have gotten hurt if it hadn't been stopped. But he also probably could have kept going. If he had been knocked down, he probably would have gotten up, and survived the round.
And then he had a chance to win it.
Was the chance of getting hurt because his defenses were down worth ending his chance to win? Tough call. Safety says yes, but it's kind of marginal.
NOT FLOYD MAYWEATHER OR THIS BUD FOR YOU CRAWFORD
Marvin Hagler BEAT THE BRAKES OFF Sugar ray Leonard I DON'T CARE WHAT YALL SAY😤
When will we ever see a magical foursome like Hearns, Duran, Leonard and Hagler again? Answer, never, If you were lucky enough, like I was, to like through that golden golden golden age, you are a very privileged boxing fan.
Boxing promotion is at an all time low, there is talent out there
What a bullshit stoppage
I was wondering about that .. not many comments about it. I don’t know a lot about boxing but Howard seemed to have plenty of gas left in his tank and was giving Ray a HELL of a time. Hagler got robbed too eh ?
As great as Ray was… and he was…Both the draw with Tommy and The win awarded over hagler were travesties of boxing and it’s those types of decisions that stain the image of the Sweet Science.
Look, Hagler competed in boxing from 1973 to 1987 and reigned as the undisputed champion of the middleweight division from 1980 to 1987, making twelve successful title defenses, all but one by knockout. Hagler also holds the highest knockout percentage of all undisputed middleweight champions at 78 percent. His undisputed middleweight championship reign of six years and seven months is the second-longest active reign of the 20th century. He was robbed by the judges against the cocky showboat golden boy. Hagler begged for a re-match but never got one. If Hagler didn’t give in to Golden Boy’s requests for 10oz gloves instead of the customary 8oz, the larger 22x22 foot ring, and most importantly granting Leonard 12 rounds instead of the customary 15, Hagler would have knock Ray out! PERIOD !!!
The fight was close. Many thought it should have been a draw- where Hagler would have retained his title. and that 118-110 third judge, JoJo Guerra, had Leonard winning by a lopsided score of 118-110, having had Leonard winning 10 rounds and Hagler winning only 2 rounds. Guerra's scorecard was widely derided in the media following the bout. What fight was he watching ?!
I saw a split decision win for the champion Marvin Hagler.
Greatest boxer of the last 50 years.
I watched Leonard vs. Hagler live on TV. And as I remember, Leonard did outpunch Hagler, but it appeared to be mostly fluffy flurries that barely hurt the latter. And Hagler commented post-fight (which is admittedly politically-incorrect to say now), "He fought like a girl."
Mayweather, wouldnt last against that era of boxing, where no One ducked anyone
I still waiting if somebody's better or most complete boxer than Sugar Ray Leonard
Why did the referee stop the fight?
"Confronted his worst nightmare???" Huh?
This reminds me of Adrian Broner 😂 I know I won the fight 😂
If he's so called the best why did he run from Aaron Pryor?? I bet you a lot of sugar Ray fans are going to try to justify this one. Please note it was caught on camera 😂
What an AWFUL BS stop...This was done in Leonard fights REPEATEDLY....The Leonard vs Benitez and Mayweather fights immediately come to mind....
