  • Welcome back to Boxing After Dark! Tonight, we journey back to 1984, a pivotal year in boxing history marked by Sugar Ray Leonard's dramatic comeback after a two-year hiatus. With his sights set on the formidable Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Leonard first had to overcome Kevin Howard and shake off his ring rust. Having already bested legends like Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns, many anticipated an easy victory for Leonard. However, the night would prove them wrong.

Terrence Crawford NEVER fought a welterweight anywhere near the level of a sugar Ray Leonard. A washed up Kellbrook, near retirement Porter and a clearly deteriorating Post accident Errol Spence don’t count and certainly don’t come remotely close to A Prime Ray Leonard who had EVERYTHING going for him skill wise. I’ve seen lesser fighters put hands on Crawford and none of them had even a third of the ability that Wilfred Benitez, Thomas Hearns, Duran had. And these were the caliber of fighters Ray faced in his prime. Legitimate Hall of Fame killers who were all in their PRIMES As well. A mentally tired Porter who half trained and was pondering retirement, an inactive, diminished Spence, and a broken washed up Kellbrook don’t compare. And even if they were in their Primes Thomas Hearns Alone would destroy any of them , let alone Ray Leonard. Those guys were cut from a different cloth. No rehydration clauses, special weight restriction cut offs, marinating a fight for years till the other guy slows down etc….. they fought when it counted in their absolute PRIMES.

Wasnt that Leonard's comeback fight after the brief ( first) retirement because of the detached retina? Howard was a tough fighter , who'd do battle t to the end and beyond any challenge lol. I think Leonard retired immediately ( again) after the fight. So, the idea of a rematch was not part of his plans at the time. It simply didnt, and wasnt, going to happen. Just remember that Leonard won despite being away from the ring maybe two years, came back and won anyway.

Benitez and Hearns deserved earlier rematches and an earlier rubber match with Duran as well. And the late denial of rematch with Hagler, he waited over a year, tells us that this "legend" has a handful of asterisks and question marks. He was a media darling and handled that way. The sad thing was the sparring partner's wrecklessness did that his eye in.

  • @CYMotorsport

Scorecards were wonky to be fair. For instance on David’s official card He gave SRL a 10-8 in round 3 despite no knockdown which isn’t in line with convention in 1984. Then in round 4 he gave Howard a 10-9. This is objective and incorrect scored 2 round swing alone against Howard. On this card his final outcome was 79-74. He also gave 2 rounds a 10-10. Again in 1984, it wasn’t normal to I hand out 10-10 rounds so casually. 10-10 rounds by any rule set are meant to be incredibly rare.
Only one referee awarded Howard the proper 10-8 in round 4 as the rules dictate specifically in case of a knockdown all else being equal. Even Sugars biggest fan wouldn’t say he did enough to overcompensate for that knockdown in that round haha that’s silly. George, the middle ref who correctly scored the 10-8 also was the only one who gave Leonard round 8…. Which… idk how the actual hell you do that. Howard pieced him up especially at the end of the round. Leonard kept throwing this double hook this round and Howard picked it apart scoring big. You can tell Ray was pissdd after that round and didn’t wanna risk the scoring he tried to confront Howard after 8 and Howard just shunned it .
Ultimately I still think it was a great stoppage . He had no legs and couldn’t even get his arms up to grab Leonard. 10 would have been tragic if they made it. But the scoring was very very odd. Still a great stoppage and a win for Ray

    • @tubucoco
      @tubucoco 11 дней назад

I don't think Howard was ahead on the scorecards like he claims, but it was a close fight going into the final rounds. I will say that the ref stopped the fight too soon, way too soon, and I agree with Howard in that they may have done it to ensure that Sugar Ray won the fight. But I didn't agree with Howard in that he took all of Ray's shots and wasn't hurt. 😆 He was out on his feet when they stopped it, but that Ref should have let Ray knock him out and not stop it like that. It takes away from the fight when they do something like that, Kevin Howard deserved to go out on his shield if that's what he wanted because he had fought a tough fight up until then. It's just messed up that they stopped it like that. SMH Oh well, great fight anyways!😊

Howard was lucky the ref stopped it IMO.
Leonard was get n ready to unload an arsenal of punches that would have done serious damage. to Howard.
You could see those wicked body shots by Leonard starting to break Howard down and to set him up for those head shots and Leonard's big right hand.
If the ref had not stopped the fight Howard would have looked like Hearns on the ropes in their first fight only this time it would have been target practice by Leonard unloading those big guns on Bruh Howard at will.
    Much respect for Howard though.
He was game. He is a Philly Fighter but Leonard was a world class Top Tier fighter and he was too good for Howard even with the long layoff and the ring rust.

This is why I could not stand Leonard, refs were always looking to help him as well as judges. He was awarded a few fights he didn't win.

He could have gotten hurt if it hadn't been stopped. But he also probably could have kept going. If he had been knocked down, he probably would have gotten up, and survived the round.
And then he had a chance to win it.
Was the chance of getting hurt because his defenses were down worth ending his chance to win? Tough call. Safety says yes, but it's kind of marginal.

I was wondering about that .. not many comments about it. I don’t know a lot about boxing but Howard seemed to have plenty of gas left in his tank and was giving Ray a HELL of a time. Hagler got robbed too eh ?

As great as Ray was… and he was…Both the draw with Tommy and The win awarded over hagler were travesties of boxing and it’s those types of decisions that stain the image of the Sweet Science.

Look, Hagler competed in boxing from 1973 to 1987 and reigned as the undisputed champion of the middleweight division from 1980 to 1987, making twelve successful title defenses, all but one by knockout. Hagler also holds the highest knockout percentage of all undisputed middleweight champions at 78 percent. His undisputed middleweight championship reign of six years and seven months is the second-longest active reign of the 20th century. He was robbed by the judges against the cocky showboat golden boy. Hagler begged for a re-match but never got one. If Hagler didn’t give in to Golden Boy’s requests for 10oz gloves instead of the customary 8oz, the larger 22x22 foot ring, and most importantly granting Leonard 12 rounds instead of the customary 15, Hagler would have knock Ray out! PERIOD !!!
The fight was close. Many thought it should have been a draw- where Hagler would have retained his title. and that 118-110 third judge, JoJo Guerra, had Leonard winning by a lopsided score of 118-110, having had Leonard winning 10 rounds and Hagler winning only 2 rounds. Guerra's scorecard was widely derided in the media following the bout. What fight was he watching ?!
I saw a split decision win for the champion Marvin Hagler.

I watched Leonard vs. Hagler live on TV. And as I remember, Leonard did outpunch Hagler, but it appeared to be mostly fluffy flurries that barely hurt the latter. And Hagler commented post-fight (which is admittedly politically-incorrect to say now), "He fought like a girl."
