I hired Ray for a conference speaking event. He killed it. He showed all of the great big fight finishes on video, reflected on the win or loss, and we absolutely got our moneys worth. Best company event ever. We bought Everlasting boxing gloves for every attendee and he stayed around and signed every glove. With photos. Priceless. Class act.
@@justinfletcher7630 I'm a big Hagler fan, but I don't understand why people think Hagler won that fight. It was close, don't get me wrong. But Leonard landed more punches. Hagler didn't look like his dominant self. He looked a bit slow and like he wasn't in control. Leonard was just so fast and slipped so many punches. Also, the pace and flow were in Leonard's favor. I do, however, think that had they fought again, Hagler would've won.
Leonard at welterweight, before he tore his retina, is the greatest fighter in history. He mastered every skill in boxing at the highest level and had no flaws. After the retina tear he took a long lay off and was never the same.
What a fascinating guy! He's so honest and insightful. I remember being a child and watching him in the '76 Olympics. When he turned pro, everyone had an eye on him. His supreme talent was evident. What separated him, in my opinion, is that like Ali, he truly had the heart of a champion. He was so darn mentally tough and would will himself to victory against the other greats. He's my favorite boxer of all-time and a marvelous human being.
This is it for me. I first saw him on Wide World Of Sports in 1975 I was in elementary school. I remember all of those moments that they showed. He was even bigger than Reggie Jackson(who was huge) in my eyes. For me the pinnacle was the Hearns fight. I was in 9th grade and we went to see it on closed circuit at Newark Symphony Hall. Sold out so we walked behind the building and watched it on the truck tv. Magical moment🥊
It is really wonderful to hear him talk about his Olympic experience and his life. He was a childhood hero to so many of us. Excellent interview with an amazing person!
Back in the 70’s into the 80’s was the apex of the Non-heavyweight fighters. You had Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler all fighting in the same weight class. Then you had guys like Salvador Sanchez, possibly greatest featherweight ever, not to mention Alexis Arguello and Aaron Pryor who gave us two wars of attrition. Great time to be a boxing fan.
Ray was actually “ a business” before Mayweather. It wasn’t just having an attorney as an adviser, it was having a trustworthy attorney as an advisor that was everything.
It wasn't uncommon for boxers managers to form a corporation for their charges. Mike Trainer advising Leonard to form a company and get investors for his debut fight was nothing new. It's how boxing was conducted. If you watch old fight footage and look at the uniforms cornermen wore they usually had the name of an organization on their white cardiacs. Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, they were all registered companies.
I remember those great 1976 Olympics in Montreal like it was yesterday. But it's 2024 now and they're 48 years ago. Sugar Ray and the U.S. Boxing Team with the Spinks brothers, Howard Davis, John Tate, Davey Armstrong, Leo Randolph. and the other names I now can't recall along with Bruce Jenner winning the Decathlon made for a GREAT summer.
I had the privilege of meeting Angelo Dundee when I was in elementary school. He came to my elementary school as a representative of Sugar Ray. He was introduced as Ray's trainer. He showed everyone a few boxing moves. He was good guy.
I love watching interviews with Ray & Magic Johnson because they both are still animated & love talking about their respective sport. It’s always must see
I grew up watching sugar Ray Leonard, ln fact he was my next door neighbor, we went to Jr. High and High school together,we both loved Palmer Park md. In the early 70s
VERY NICE AND CLASSY GUY. IN 2008, WHEN I HAD PICTURE TAKEN WITH HIM AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY !!!!!!! BEST BOXER EVER !!!!! THANK U VERY MUCH MR. LENOARD ...
I met Ray at of all things an ob/gyn medical event years ago in Florida where he was promoting the 1-2 punch combination of Rolaids. He was classy, friendly, and interesting; and I greatly enjoyed talking with him. We discussed his first fight with Duran, and Ray just shook his head while saying "he was one good fighter!".
Leonard shows a lot of class and style in recognizing his own inner strength in overcoming his fears and doubts but also humility and respect for the efforts of his opponents. Joe Buck is an excellent interviewer.
What a great entertaining interview with my boxing hero. Of the 4 Kings of the Golden era, SRL was the sweetest!!! In my books, the best boxer of my time❤
I really admire,Sugar Ray Leonard. He and Muhammad Ali are my Heroes. I met Ali, but my dream now is to meet Leanar d really I am praying to God really that I might meet him one day. I am also retired now and I have become a trainer of boxers now. I am an ex SA Flyweight Champion and in 1995 I became the first South African to win a Commonwealth Title (Belt) in London England. However I am still in love with this Sport called Boxing. When I knockout Francis Ampofo who was the Champion was named as one of the best knockouts of 2021.
I came to Appreciate Sugar Rey more now than ever, I remember My friends Dads friends, Bragging About Hit Man, Duran, everyone else, But Sugar Rey always came through on Top, Amazing Life…!
As someone who underwent a detached retina surgery 22 years ago, I can confirm what Leonard was told by his physician regarding Leonard getting back in the ring. The scleral buckle used to repair a macula-on detachment generally makes a retina more secure against the eyeball than is natural. While the desire to protect Leonard’s health was understandable, it’s a bit unfortunate that the overhyped risk drove him from the ring in his absolute prime. What a fantastic champion; the most complete fighter I’ve seen in my lifetime. I thought Mike Trainer, for all his brilliant management of Leonard, was too strict about Angie Dundee’s compensation and this eventually led to their parting ways. Anyway, it’s fun to relive the old days with this interview!
What a wonderful era of boxing, following the heavyweight legends from the 60’s and 70’s. Ray has always been a class act and is incredibly honest and inspirational. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
Ali, Frazier, Foremsn, Norton, and 5th man in, Earnie Shavers in the 70s. Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Haglar in the 80s. Two golden eras. Will never happen again. Boxing is not the same.
Suga Ray Leo this one of my favorite boxers even today i choose him over most boxers like seeing him. He should make A Suga Ray Movie it will be the best movie jus like Ali the Greatest. Nice Champ.
I was born in DC in 1970. Lived in PG country before moving to Montgomery co. I can tell you as a kid playing little league football in Upper Marlboro.. Palmer park was the toughest team we played. It’s not hard to see where Ray gets his toughness.
I was hoping someone would ask the question of how he thought he'd have got on against Robinson at welterweight - talent-wise, nothing in it for me, but, I maybe would have Robinson just slightly tougher. Of course, Leonard made no defences of the Middleweight Crown he took from Hagler, but, relinquished it to go back into retirement (saying he just wanted to beat Hagler and wasn't interested in defending the crown) and Robinson was a five-time Middleweight Champion. So at welterweight, it's even Stephens but Robinson beats him at middleweight. Would Robinson have beaten Hagler at middleweight? Yes, although they may have shared honours in a two or three-fight series. Engaging interview with the great Sugar Ray Leonard. Thanks for uploading.
My all-time favorite fighter Mr. Sugar Ray Leonard. It's a shame that the Olympics don't give any coverage to boxing any more. I saw no coverage this past Olympics in July of 2024.
amazing interview! thank you guys! wow.. I am fighting the diabetes epidemic with my sugar free bakery since 2018! Zambawango out of Atlanta and shipping to everyone nationwide.
The thing about Duran and his No Mas, I think what happened is that in the first fight, Duran had to go down to his last dregs to beat Leonard. Like Ali did in his last fight with Frazier. Mentally, physically, motivationally…..from every fibre of his being. I think he just didn’t want or just couldn’t go there again. “Fighting” him again would take too much and he didn’t want to do that again. Anything less however, meant that a knockout was inevitable and he didn’t want that either. So ‘No Mas’.
Did you know before he played right center for world champion croton dukes?...his nickname was john nootz...he married a kindergarten teacher....he sold beer....his quote: I'm Johnny lambo and you're not

BUT I DID HAte it when NORRIS JUST BEAT THE HELL OUTTA HIM WITH A KNOCKOUT. AND HE DIDN'T BEAT HAGLER. HE DANCED HIS WAY AROUND TO NOT GETTING KNOCKED OUT.
