The moment where Tyson says that nobody would grab you like that if they were mugging you, and then he hugs Cavett after the crowd's reaction and you could see that Cavett was a little embarrassed when Tyson said that, that moment really shows Tyson's true character. He recognized that Cavett was a little embarrassed and gave the man a big hug right there to make him feel better.
Mike Tyson will never cease to captivate me. From his ferociousness to his childlike innocence and even now with his humblensss the man has had one crazy life!
I'm just getting into Dick Cavett interviews and the fact is this style of interview doesn't exist these days. He is brilliant at making his guests feel right at home no matter who the celebrity is.
Yes I am enjoying these interviews very much. It is wonderful to watch some sincere interaction without gloss and crass predictability. I totally agree :-)
I genuinely enjoyed this interview. I don’t think Mike liked disingenuous people; that’s why it went so well, because Dick was not a phoney put-on type guy. I have seen Mike in interviews where the interviewer was outright afraid of him; in one, he told the woman not to utter another word; and she didn’t. In others, he verbally ko’d the guy; you thought he was going to get up and feed him his teeth. He didn’t appreciate, nor did he put up with, being talked down to or patronized. This interview is how he was when he liked and respected someone.
@@johnnylebay2059 did you not read anything in the comment? He doesn’t like interviewers trying to be rude, there’s more then just being nice and being rude
Mike Tyson always holds a special place in my heart. I met him once and he was very humble. I am so happy to see him be able to rebuild his life after boxing. I love you my dear friend
Mike Tyson even as a very young man was very articulate, analytical, and philosophical. A deep thinker. He was obviously well read and a great student with some great teachers.
He's a lot like Bruce Lee in that sense: both are known for being total legit badasses, but both were very sensitive, intellectual and profound, deep thinkers- almost too much so for this world.
The most vital piece of this entire interview is Mike talking about fear and being afraid of losing / his opponent beating and how controlling that fear/fire is what prepares him mentally for every fight. 90% mental, 10% physical. Controlling emotions. Every fight. A genius we won’t see the likes of in this lifetime…
7:09 He's so considerate in that he doesn't want Dick's karate to fail on him in concern that he'll embarrass himself on his own show 8:19 but at the same time he's a realist and he's not going to lie to make Dick feel good about himself
Karate, aikido, even taekwondo, they teach these kooky leverage tricks, with the counters to wrist grabs. I couldn't stand that part when I was in taekwondo way back in the day. I knew deep down that it was nothing more than a kooky lil trick designed to give false confidence. I knew it was utter quackery amongst the realms of Real World Street Fighting knowledge, skill, and abilities. Even before joining tkd, I remember a friend referring to that type of stuff as "Let Me", as in, Let Me show you my nice cute trick that I could use on you if you just kindly comply with me,and only just grab my wrists. I agreed with what he was saying, and I naturally felt the same way,but I joined tkd for the sake of having a healthy fitness outlet, and to show off my natural kicking abilities.
It seems nobody dislikes Mike Tyson and honestly there's every reason to admire and love this man. He came on the boxing scene and made fans out of people who weren't even boxing fans (like myself) with his amazing speed and ferociousness never seen before and I doubt we will ever see it again. Now in his older age his philosophical views and raw honesty once again take us by surprise and fills us with excited hope. He is my most beloved and favorite celebrity... Love you Iron Mike.
Just one more thing that was great about Dick Cavett and his show. He always treated his guests with respect. Love to see how well Mike and Dick got along.
In his prime I honestly believe Tyson was unbeatable....his movement, bobbing and weaving was incredible, the way he transferred his weight to create maximum power....absolutely brilliant.
You can see how gentle, and nearly affectionate Mike was. It's just his nature. What a juxtaposition to his fighting self. You can also see where that could get him into danger outside of the ring. What a tough balance to live being someone like him...
"If it comes a time that I stop becoming afraid to fight or feeling nervous I won't fight anymore," WOW!!!! That's a great point on using your fears to motivate yourself.
Mike Tyson is one of our Greatest treasures to witness. He's a gentle giant and seems so pure. He just wanted genuine people around him and to be happy. Sigh. Terrible what happened to him after this. Vast difference in the interviews a few years later due to his experiences. I will always have a tremendous amount if respect for Mike Tyson. ❤ and i love the interviewers style .💯‼
Tyson’s boxing IQ is supreme, and to top it off with a iron physique and beast like reflexes. If cuzz was alive for a couple more years he could of been without a argument, the best to ever lace up.
"If you are calm and relaxed enough, you can see everything, you can every twitch of his muscle." Probably a simple fact to boxers, and far be it from me to take the crown from Muhammed Ali, but how truly exceptional was this man?
So well spoken, calm and insightful this man can be! A contrast to his anger and violence in the ring. I love him he’s even a better intellectual today.

Just to clarify, while being taller and having a reach advantage can give a fighter a ‘boxing’ advantage (striking your opponent from a farther distance, controlling with jabs, having some more power with hooks, etc), being shorter has some advantages-faster punching, easier angling at close-range (and for body-shots), and faster punch recovery, etc-all of which Tyson exploited effectively while having great technical prowess and ferocious power.
Great interview. Both showed class. If everyone treated Mike like Cavett did here, maybe things would’ve played out different for him. Mike had a lot more than people allowed him to show. This is great.
This is why Tyson is so fascinating to me. Within a week of becoming the youngest heavyweight champ in history at age 20, he sits for a televised interview with Dick Cavett, known for his intellectualism. Outside of Muhammad Ali, who would do that?
@IMDb Video Games yes you are right, but Their is one move kinda close where you are in the guard and control both wrists to find a opening for ground and pound like putting their hand down while doing a elbow strike, I saw it demonstrated on a channel called fight perfect but their RUclips channel was taken down 😟
The point of the demonstration is to prove the principle of 'mechanics' in Aikido. It's like a Aikido 'party trick'. I did Aikido for only a short time in my teens but have used it several times to overpower people who have stepped up to fight me. It does work very well, but is not an offensive weapon at all. it is very much a defensive technique. If you think it is bullshido then a trip to a local Aikido school would be an eye opener indeed.
@@digdougedy We have Aikido guys who get embarrassed by BJJ white belts at my gym. Aikido has very little practical application and the lack of proper sparring and training against resistance makes it mostly horseshit.

This was such a beautiful conversation. I also loved how Mike pointed out the silliness of that technique duck showed him

So basically if you don't brown nose him he'll threaten you with violence?

Mike Tyson even as a very young man was very articulate, analytical, and philosophical. A deep thinker. He was obviously well read and a great student with some great teachers.

Karate, aikido, even taekwondo, they teach these kooky leverage tricks, with the counters to wrist grabs. I couldn't stand that part when I was in taekwondo way back in the day. This individual right here was one of, if not the most terrifying fighter in combat sports history. An absolute *BEAST!*
The interviewer was good he put Tyson at ease!!
Great interview. Both showed class. If everyone treated Mike like Cavett did here, maybe things would’ve played out different for him. Mike had a lot more than people allowed him to show. This is great.

Bjørn Friborg BULLSHIDO!!!!!! 🙄
