  • I removed all the paint on this antique sideboard and revealed the natural wood. Lots of work, but worth the effort. Amazing transformation.
Easy furniture flip or DIY project. Trash to treasure.

@@ParodiParadiseI mean, yeah. It’s unfortunate that there has to be a choice between the two. Hence, I guess, if you’re going to do painted furniture, use a base piece that’s made of really boring species of wood? (Also, apply a protective finish over the painting so that it stays nice.)

Makes me think of these beautiful bird cages (probably made for decor) that you can easily find pics of these days but have the most beautiful painted flowers on each side. And alot of them are from either the early 1900s, and even the late 1800s! art never really changed if you think about it. Its always been around. 😊

A lot of people are commenting about why people are painting over old wood. It was a very popular and common occurance not too long ago (still happening) to "modernize" old pieces. Antique funiture suffered a setback as they lost popularity & less people were buying them. (I am 70 years old - antiques were BIG in my 20s, 30s and 40s and I started seeing a decrease in interest as the craze for mid-century modern grew). So they got bought then painted to make them match the hottest colors at the time. There are youtubers out there now doing it to mid-century modern pieces. (Years ago they sold for peanuts at garage sales) Removing the old handles and replacing them with "modern" ones, painting them the latest colors - sad. 10 years from now, people will be buying those pieces on Facebook Market place or a thrift store and restoring them back to the original finish - minus all the great, original, really cool looking hardware!!
The thing with an antique piece is, when correctly refinished, it ends up looking better than the original finish and that is the kind of "update" it deserves.
