- Gale Banks was curious just how effective the factory cold air intake system was in his supercharged Mercury Marauder. It turns out his engine was being robbed of power! Here's how he found out.

Gale is taking RUclips by storm. Great to see an well seasoned human sharing his love for horsepower and data on youtube.
He made a video talking about I dash. Just like every other. Yet he said we live in a vacuum
Definitely. This man is one of the greatest minds in the automotive industry. He is the reason we have turbo diesels from the factory in our pickups today. This man Is a legend. Him and his team make some of the most. Reliable and best performing parts on the market I've used his parts for 3 cummins builds and have his I dash gauges in all my vehicles even the wife's grand Cherokee and love all of it
And this is why this man is respected, honest R&D and is willing to use his own damn car as a test mule.
That and his shit works! I worked on a truck that had so many Banks upgrades that I had to hold the brake when letting out on the clutch to avoid hitting stuff in the shop parking lot.
Kenneth James not all parts are US made we used to make then he found cheaper to make taiwan
sienile that makes no sense
@@MoparMadness93 He basically just said "I have no idea how to drive a manual transmission"
But you're right, it made absolute no sense. His comment called also be interpreted as "It had so many Banks upgrades, it made it undriveable and dangerous!"
Probably the former.
Asks his employee to turn on the fans PLEASE. Folks, this is how a true gentleman behaves.
Indeed. I see far too many people demanding respect without ever giving any. First one must be respectful. Doesn't matter if no one gives respect in return. Of course respect will return in droves but you cannot expect it.
Is it really that mind-blowing that he said "please"?

Jack Eagan i said this before in previous videos, glad im not the only one who thinks this. And lol at supercharged marauder sleeper
Cool car!
I wonder if Gale would work on an airplane? Now that would be flying high!
I have said that before as well omg
Gale would drive a sleeper. I love this guy. He is so genuine and the way he confronts competitors is awesome.
Gale is an engineer, plain and simple. He wants to see numbers and *_proof_* that something is truly adding power. Unlike most people who simply slap on an intake because they *_think_* it'll add power.

Mr. Banks is like an old book that is so interesting that Once you pick it up you just can’t put it down. The library of knowledge.
I feel like people hate on banks because of the price of the products. IF you watch these videos and watch Gale you'll see how much work goes into a product. Driven by passion for the hobby. Work is still his hobby after all these years.
Saw a video years ago where some British guys tested several aftermarket (K&N ect.)on a few cars. These guys had the fans blowing into the engine and the whole nine yards. In the end none of the aftermarket systems added any horsepower at all!! I mentioned this to a guy that ran a car shop in Hawaii where the police got their speedometers calibrated and he told me " yeah, I don't really push those things anymore"! Just saying.....
@@rangered2010 the cold air intake should not make much of a difference if any on a stock setup, when you will see a change is when you add power and increase the air needed beyond the original specifications used for the intake design. Add a turbo and double the power and the old stock intake will be a restriction, if adding a cold air intake to a otherwise stock engine it's mostly just going to add cool intake noises.
Ive got no problem with somebody making money. Especially when everybody on youtube is either promoting some shitty mobile game, telling you to buy a shitty tshirt or both. Hes selling high quality enthusiast level products made by him. Who could be mad?
@@jaydunbar7538 On trucks they can make a some, especially on the larger displacement engines, but an intake is step ONE of many on upgrades
This guy can easily afford to drive ANY car on the planet. And he chooses to drive a 15 year old four door. Who doesn't respect that?
A fifteen year old four door that is factory supercharged and only weighs as much as a Mustang. While having suspension smooth enough to embarrass any modern luxury car. Those marauders are no joke. I'm halfway done making my town car into a marauder.

Great video, very cool that you drive a 03' Mercury Marauder as your daily. I also have a 2003 Marauder as my daily, but I don't have the trilogy supercharger kit on mine. I'm gathering all the parts to do an Eaton swap from a 03-04 cobra.
Brilliant. As an engineer this is great to see. Leading the assessment and development with representative data. 👏👏👏
I hope he can still make vids like this for the next 10 years. Man is 82 and looks like he’s in his early 70s, or late 60s. Man is aging well not just physically but mentally too

"My whole career has been about life after wide open throttle" - Gale Banks
What an awesome thing to say 👏
Kickass again, love this stuff. I'd love to see a dyno comparison that demos the estimation and engineering potential of this thing. So for example, do some pulls stock, measure the power output. We know we're losing ~10% of power due to that air density loss, so just jam a bigass dryer vent house out the front with no filter and show how that air density number, and thus power changes.
Great video Gale! Love the info you’re providing for everyone.
Keep the videos coming.

The Mercury Marauder is my kind of car. But, back in '96 I ended up buying a new Impala SS. In fact, I still have it. The stock engine in the Marauder (as I recall) was naturally aspirated with 4 valves per cylinder. I remember reading a road test on the Marauder where they summed up the car's power by saying, "it lacked a sense of urgency when launching from a standstill". The conclusion was that the benefits of the 4 valves per cylinder came into play at the higher RPM. So the low end torque was not too impressive but the high end horsepower was strong.
That is such an awesome daily driver.
I have always wanted a Marauder!
I have a P32 chev Workhorse chassis RV with a 6.5t and the intake runner goes from the near side to the front of the RV then over to the Off side of the RV ,, I was only getting 4psi boost (I know PSI BOOST BLA BLA ) but its the only test i have here in Australia ,, so from 4 psi to 12 just by shortening the intake runner That was over 6 feet long to 6 inches and a K and N free flow blue filter , What a differance ,,, now i can hear that sucker spool up ,,,, I even piss off the HONDA BOYS at the lights ,,,,,,,Great Vid Mr Banks
Lol and I just put a stock intake back in my 98 grand Cherokee. The previous owner put a K&N cold air (fipk 2) kit in it. After years of seeing dust lining the inside of intake tube, I finally just went to a junk yard and got a stock intake.
Plus, with the stock intake I can buy a snorkel kit. Not planning to do many deep water crossings, but I hear the snorkels are great for keeping most dirt and dust from even reaching the filter, which is much needed where I'm from.
Banks Power, thank you for taking the time and expalining things us,in which you dont have to! I own a 355,000+ mile 02 LB7 Duramax and a '15 LML Duramax I love these engines!Always looking forward in seeing the lastest videos. Need any help out there in your shop?!?!
Best video when it comes to intake study’s
Love how banks is so dedicated to power . True muscle man
Make one that blows gale force style. Lol. You are a legend my friend. 🎉
A lot of the time engineers are trying to hush the racket of the intake.
And other compromises
Quiet it down, make it so you can drive through a hurricane and not hydrolock the engine. I've made my own intake system and I can tell you 2 things: short ram's are a waste of time, and panel filters are not a restriction (unless you're doing power adders like a supercharger).
when your modifying a car you generally dont care about how noisy it will be
when your buying a new car , generally you do
@@ProVision3187 Except that a lot of OEMs have devices to add induction sound inside the car. On some of the newer GTIs, Volkswagen ran a pipe off the cool side of the turbo into the cowl area so the sound could come in through the HVAC system. BMW has been fond of digital engine noise through the audio system, and now Ford is doing it, too.
This is good stuff. When I watched this I started thinking about the MAF sensor's housing. That venturi is tailored to the sensor, but it's for the stock setup and is causing a choke point. Need a bigger opening and sensor to match.. among a few other things of course.
This is why I appreciate Gale Banks. He starts out telling the aftermarket performance world that his products are better. Then he follows up with telling them why, how they are doing it wrong and how they can do it right. This shows the passion of this man. I also believe he wants to share his knowledge with everyone. Gale Banks is no.longer a young man. I think he is starting to realize this and wants people to continue in his life's work, since he is realizing he is closer to the end than the beginning.

That merc probably glided around everywhere. Panther cars were a good ride with good potential in the 4.6l, especially with the 32v dohc setup you could rob off an SUV for a lot cheaper than a cobra.

I ❤ Gale Banks . I pray he lives forever 🙏
Gale Banks is my new idol. He’s that older fella that you’d love to know all he has to tell.
Lots of people underestimate what an intake can cost you. My hilux has an l67 supercharged 3.8 swap and gained just over 14% power and carried the torque for a lot longer going to a custom intake setup with more room for improvement as that was still drawing air from the engine bay for the most part. That's a damn respectable jump in my books for a few hours in the shed on the tools and about $50 in material...
This guy is a fucking legend always facts no hearsay and gossip!!!!!
Gale banks is the grandfather we all wish we had
Adding more filtration surface with same oem specification and larger intake too filtration box works to.
You can also just add air intake surface to filtration box and making it positive air pressure.
Most normal car manufactures take intake air to filtration box in front of radiator or side panel.
Wet cold air filter intake is like wanting to be straight shooter but always misses your target.
I'll take the stock one! Nice upgrade for an NA 2V mod motor.
I love watching these videos. I'm like a sponge for this stuff lol
