I believe he got removed from Weekend Update because of the O.J. jokes. He got fired along with Chris Rock, David Spade, Adam Sandler, and Chris Farley because Lorne was cleaning house and they fired all the stand-ups including Norm.

Weekend Update remains the funniest part of SNL. I suspect they had more O.J. Jokes but ‘restrained’ themselves
They could probably do a whole show on OJ, with an open that replicated his commercials jumping over luggage in the airport, or the exercise video that played a role in his court defense.
I wonder if they even did a little tribute to him because he had hosted the show in the early years.
They just couldn't FIT them in.
