I just saw Hamish Stuart at Ronnie Scott´s in London, and I can just say WOW! What a great gig! He still, at 68 (Nov 2017) sings like a soul God and he and the band swung like crazy. I am truly greatful to have seen him live. Thank you so much for making the interview!

    • @Jenjenilou
      @Jenjenilou 4 года назад

Nope only Hamish from Glasgow. Molly Duncan was from Montrose, Robbie McIntosh and Roger Ball from Dundee, Alan Gorrie from Perth and Onnie Mcintyre was from East Dunbartonshire. They actually formed in London. Steve Ferrone was English, from Brighton. Not exactly what you'd call a Glasgow band.

Dude please with all your AWB and race posturing. No one here cares that you had dinner with AWB in 1975 or that you have multiple copies of their albums no more than they care about me being related to a famous comedian. I don't need to prove that I have multiple copies of each AWB album or to brag or how many i have to prove how much a fan i am. That is neither here or there. In fact it's plain ignorant and immature on your part. Not only do i have albums i also have CD's by the band. You took a simple statement by a poster who simply stated Hamish Stuart was his favorite blue eyed soul singer and turned it into the political bullshit that we have to deal with in the U.S. today.
Here's an idea for you. Instead of trying to turn what was a simple damn compliment and appreciation of Hamish Stuart's gift as a singer why don't you address the political and social divide that the current sitting president of the United States has brought with him to the White House. That's the where the real issues regarding race lies. That would be more worthy of your time versus having a shit fit over a compliment about a music artist we all like. SMDH

I initially responded your comment about blue eyed soul in a nice manner but you chose to be a jerk about it and get all in your feelings. You're the only spouting nonsense that doesn't even matter as everyone was showing appreciation for Hamish/AWB. You somehow managed to turn a positive post into a negative one. You come off as an overgrown child. We will continue to call AWB, Hall & Oates, Bobby Caldwell, Micheal McDonald/Doobies blue eyed soul because that's what it is to us. Maybe you shouldn't have interject your 2cents and your hurt feelings over something so harmless.

Enjoy the holiday with your family. I am. You can come back tomorrow and tell us about the multiple copies of each AWB album you own tomorrow. Speaking of arrogance 🤣

Fantastic interview. Always a pleasure to hear how it all evolved. Aside from Pick up the Pieces my all time fav is Star in the Ghetto. I always played that track off the their album during my Dj years back in the 90's. I finally found the 12" recently, in mint condition, and have been on a cloud ever since. Im in Brooklyn and they are playing in NY this summer. I hope to finally catch them live!!! :)

    HELLO SWEETHEART,
I USED TO LISTEN TO YOU GUYS IN MY
ROOM ALONE. IT WAS ON A VINYL-78. YOU GUYS WERE SO CLEAN AND FUNKY AND TALENTED. THE INSTRUMENTS
WERE ALSO AS AMAZING. YOU GUYS
    WERE SO NATURAL. EVERYONE
IN OUR SCHOOL, NEIGHBORHOOD THOUGHT THAT YOU GUYS AS MOST
EVERYONE ELSE THOUGHT THAT YOU GUYS WERE BLACK. I KNOW THAT WAS A HUGE COMPLIMENT TO, FOR YOU GUYS BECAUSE PEOPLE WERE ABSOLUTELY
    SHOCKED WHEN THEY SAW, REALIZED
THAT YOU GUYS WERE WHITE. THERE WAS ONLY ONE BLACK RADIO STATION TO
LISTEN TO MUSIC ON. YOU GUYS WERE AMAZING❗. THEY SPUN YOUR MUSIC
    AS IF YOU WERE BLACK.
I NOW LISTEN TO YOU GUYS IN THE CAR AND SING ALONG WITH YOU GUYS AND IF SOMEONE IN THEIR CAR HAS THEIR MUSIC ON; WHATEVER THEY ARE LISTEN- ING TO I DROWN THEM OUT WITH YOUR MUSIC. THEY TURN THEIR MUSIC
DOWN AND LISTEN TO YOU GUYS WHILE
I SING ALONG. I BEAM WITH PRIDE. 😇🎤
I NOW ENCOURAGE THE YOUNG ONES
THAT DANCE TO FORM DANCE ROUTINES
TO AWB MUSIC. I SAY, " IF YOU GUYS DANCE TO THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
DANCE TO "THE AVERAGE WHITE BAND".
YOU GUYS WERE/ARE SOOO AMAZING 😇

As a disco DJ I remember getting a promo of "How Can you Go Home"/"Twighlight Zone" and playing it a lot at gigs, that track (which I still think is right up there with the bigger AWB hits) proved very popular and we played it many many times. I always remember that being suprised that - against my assumptions - it was not in the charts. You'd never have know that from the number of times it got requested during that window of time!
Also, I'd like to put in a good word here for "You Got It" - which started off as the A-Side (UK at least) to "Pick Up the Pieces" but got overtaken by the popularity of PUTP. I like both songs, but I think it's sad that "You Got It" - which is a great song and performance - became all but forgotten.

Update: Hampton declined (through his handler), not comfortable in interviews especially on camera. You can check out the one he did with for Dayton's Funk Chronicles (Funk Center & Museum) a year or two ago. It is cool but you get a sense of him being ill at ease in that situation. Too bad, one of my all-time fave players. Rock on, Kidd Funkadelic!

I missed Hamish Stuart for alllll these years, and recently 'found' him via a McCartney RUclips "And I love her". Now I'm chasing down everything I can find, just to get a glimpse of him.
For instance, With Ringo on some You tubes "Octopus Garden", "Just pass me by", and more.
So, now I've got this BIG man-crush on him. Today, I picked up one of my pooch's toys, and it's a fluffy white cat with a leather collar .. and the collar is engraved "Hamish". I almost fell over!
    The Universe(s) know I'm 'in love' ...

Was it true that AWB were named when jamming in London and a friend who was listening commented "You guys are just too funky for the average white guy"?
PS At primary school I once shared a tea time meal with Hamish's brother David and himself when he was with the Dream Police. My mum thought their mother was a great singer with the church choir, although he was more famous for his amazing hairstyle amongst us wee guys!
    Great interview, thanks a lot

I read a conspiracy version of the tragedy somewhere. Allegedly, this was not an accident, but a deliberate attempt to kill members of the band.
Motive for attempt murder is their success. They smashed out other big hits charts and someone began to lose big money because of this.

    • @williamparker3328

I don't believe a word of that so called theory! There were super soul groups out at that time that were more potent than AWB. I don't take anything away from them and they were a very tight group but no way that the groups at the time were jealous of them. I'm not buying or feeling that story!
