To people that don't play drums, they'll call it a simple beat but to all drummers out there this is the perfect example of groove. Nothing but just the beat. Tight
Jerome Johnson You are Absolutely right.... The finesse and skill that goes into playing beats with time and space between notes is harder than playing busy... 👍🏻
Steve Ferrone; the human metronome. Lessons here for every aspiring drummer; know your place, know what the piece requires, listen to the other people you're playing with....atomic clock time and focus on the details of what your doing.
true but also wrong, listen to the original drumming isolated and the groove and timing are all over the place, completely different to this. But the song sounds better IMO
Saw Steve play with The Heartbreakers earlier this year at The Royal Albert Hall and oh what a drummer, seriously he kept the beat loud and hard all night, left the stage soaked in sweat. One of the worlds finest drummers for sure.
As tight as only a great drummer's drumming can be. Steve has been so inspirational to me. I remember his funky drumming on the "Notorious"album by Duran Duran. Greetings from Italy
Love Steve, lovely chap and mega drummer...... possibly thanks to Robbie McIntosh, a spectacular drummer and THE funniest bloke i have ever known. Steve would go to the Piper club in Rome as a youngster and literally study Robbie's techniques EVERY time he played there. Later he replaced Robbie in every band he left right up to the AWB after dear Robbie's very untimely death, but he certainly left his mark. Rip.👍🇬🇧
This guy is one of my all time favorite drummers! From Average White Band till today, still, one of THE best drummers in the world!!!!!!! Steve you inspired me to take up the drums many years ago. Will never be close to your abilities, but, still try my best to Pick Up The Pieces!!!! Thanks Man!!!!!!!!
Steve's IN THERE!!!! He's made a career outta BEIN' THERE ....an example to revel in for anybody that wants to turn a song or band sound into a Ferrari!!!!!!!
I've Been a Huge Fan Of this Man Mr. Steve Ferrone since his Average White Band Day's. His Drumming has so much influenced My style and Approach to the Drumset.
It takes years for some and less years for others to fathom what he is doing here. This is quite simply insane and there are not many on this planet who can play this. The feel of Ferrone's groove here is INSANE. This is a feel that Jeff P, Vinnie, Gadd and others can not deliver (could for Jeff's sake) and that is not because they were not monsters but the placement of 2 og 4, the rocking motion, the INSANE tightness and staying right there on the beat at the same place doing fills and build-ups are just... well... try to record yourselves to a click or whatever and play this. Pay attention to volume of EACH beat - snare, hihat, bassdrum - I mean. This Is It. This beat is INSANE. INSANE. No one has the 2 and 4 of Ferrone. It is laid back and yet DEMANDING, DICTATING and yet it makes you feel so GOOOOOD! OH MAN! OH MAN!
@@HolyRollerTV Groove for old people? It’s a groove...does that mean all the grooves of Bonham are for old people because those grooves were made well over 40 years ago? Drums are timeless. Also, post a link of your drumming so we can compare.
@@HolyRollerTV It’s not supposed to be all straight ahead swing drums like it was in 1950. The project Neil Peart and Cathy Rich envisioned was drummers like Ferrone and others would bring what made their name and put them into these old Buddy Rich Band big band charts. Plus, Ferrone is one of the most groove based drummers of his time. There was a reason he was hired by everyone from Chic, Duran Duran, SNL, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, etc. Come on dude, this notion that Steve Ferrone can’t swing drums really isn’t the hill you are going to die on...is it?
@@HolyRollerTV Oof...seriously. What Ferrone is doing is a chart based on a 70’s funk tune arranged for a big band and you are saying it’s stiff? 70’s R&B was his wheelhouse. Seriously post up your playing. Gadd and Chambers would never say the horseshit you are spewing to one of their peers.
killer groove and killer sound, when I listen to Ferrone on some recording session I can't believe it. Liste to "earth song" by M. Jackson, I've never heard a sound like that, he is demolition man :) my favorite groove master ever
Perfection, nothing less. I strongly recommend the Spotify version of this take (well the record "Burning for Buddy" if you have it of course), there you can hear the true sound and groove, especially the hi-hat and snare. Tune up and enjoy! open.spotify.com/track/5Ip1lHowAsgGTiDH8tP79b
jerroud mitchell it was the time, all the toms were deeper, I'm guessing, they did that to compensate. He has his stuff much lower now, I've never liked deep toms.
Groovalicous. So good. I still prefer Stan’s playing with Petty, though. Not even in Steve’s league, chops-wise.....but his feel on the early Heartbreakers records was hugely influential to me.
I know it's 4 years since your question, but I myself have to search for that guy everytime I listen to that amazing solo, so here it is: his name is Steve Marcus. :-)
I'm not a drummer but can anyone tell me what that playing style is? I am speaking of how he holds his stick with the left one bent and the right straight on.
unklemoses EXACTLY....the grip is called Traditional. It was and is used as a technique with a titled snare drum. It allowed the player different variations and technique and sounds out of the snare. There is no right way or wrong way to hold your sticks. Many of the greats used both TRADITIONAL AND MATCHED GRIP.
Marching drums were typically suspended and angled with a slope going from left to right as the drummer sees it. There's no way you can get the left hand to play the variety of notes and dynamics required if you play matched grip.
This man is 1st call hired gun for 1 reason, excellent musician!
Who cares about useless drum chops when you groove so hard?
Love this video
To people that don't play drums, they'll call it a simple beat but to all drummers out there this is the perfect example of groove. Nothing but just the beat. Tight
Well said. Most of my favorite drum tracks are groove-oriented, rock-solid stuff that manages to be tasty while holding everything down. Hard to do.
Yep. When you have a drummer like this, the band can lock together. Simple example is 4:05.
Good point and this style drumming has kept him employed for 40 plus years. :)
Yes and his snare sound is just amazing.
Jerome Johnson You are Absolutely right.... The finesse and skill that goes into playing beats with time and space between notes is harder than playing busy... 👍🏻
Man,This guy is so in the pocket! Hard to find drummers with such good time.
Top class drumming. My best version with Steve's drumming. Cooooool.
This is my favourite version of this song. Steve’s playing on it is simply perfect.
Met him a few times over the years , great guy , gracious and kind . Good on you Steve
Saw Steve play with The Heartbreakers earlier this year at The Royal Albert Hall and oh what a drummer, seriously he kept the beat loud and hard all night, left the stage soaked in sweat. One of the worlds finest drummers for sure.
Soprano sax is like a LIGHTSABER on that solo. So dope!
This is what drumming is all about.
Aside from Steve’s greatness, how about that arrangement? Holy socks.
He is just as smooth as silk.
steve is the greatest !
Pocket for days.
As tight as only a great drummer's drumming can be. Steve has been so inspirational to me. I remember his funky drumming on the "Notorious"album by Duran Duran. Greetings from Italy
Steve Ferrone can play those tubs man .... really enjoyed watching this piece ...
Laying down the groove rock-solid with nothing but the pulse -- this exudes so much confidence

For anyone who ever wondered what musicians mean by the word “pocket” - you’ve been listening to it for the last five minutes.
First time I saw Steve he was with gonzales supporting awb, blew me away 👍👍👍👍👍
That is the very definition of TIGHT drumming - wow!
Steve has things cookin in the pocket, Great Drummer. Cool Arrangement to!
His groove is insane.
Steven is the most tasteful drummer to ever do it....

He raised the bar with Tom Petty's band. He really did.
The Groove locomotive!!
Killer arrangement! Not to mention Steve is one of the best groove masters in the business
Very nice version... and Steve plays cool like a young beast.
Steve's IN THERE!!!! He's made a career outta BEIN' THERE ....an example to revel in for anybody that wants to turn a song or band sound into a Ferrari!!!!!!!
Love the arrangement
I find the fact is not if it is simple or difficult......... the fact is than he DOES make music, that simple! IMHO.
Check out his breathing - he is laying his body and breathing into the rhythm - try it, it keeps your clock steady. A master
Did Buddy Rich proud. What a talent
What a huge groove and great time Steve F has
So killer. I keep coming back to this...like water. Ferrone driving the boat, baby.
His setup has changed a lot since the mid 90s.
Dancing groove...
Jeff Porcaro was another who could play a great groove- no nonsense
This performance is worthy. Groove
Saw him several times. Excellent drummer.
Nice one steve..you always a tight groove..straight up
That´s the great Steve Marcus!
oh,yes! great song. the Drummer is extra special too!
Nice arrangement
all i can say is damn steve ferrone is da best!
HE'S TOO DAMN GOOD
Great soprano solo and legendary arif mardin arrangement
Tom Petty could’ve picked any drummer on the planet after Stan. He picked SF! Killer time keeper! Like a Swiss watch! ALL KILLER, NO FILLER!! 🔥🔥
Tom always knew what he was doing
Groove machine.
Just solid, tasty and feel.
I've Been a Huge Fan Of this Man Mr. Steve Ferrone since his Average White Band Day's. His Drumming has so much influenced My style and Approach to the Drumset.
Me as well Charles Franklin. I got to hear this the guy drum everyday....
Awesome groove master! I have his signature Pearl snare (not Gretsch) the best 6.5" brass I've ever played.

Very very well said.... 2 & 4 tightness is the keyword.... he's got literally the law of space and time in his hands...
Jeff did though
Agree with the below - great example of less being more.
Absurdamente cativante, sensacional! Simples e de bom gosto o trabalho de Ferrone nesta canção! A banda, preciso elogiar? Grato!
Really wonderful !!
Excellent!
Wonderful...
Mature in the pocket playing
love it!!
Some dumb people don't get how great this drumming is.
I agree spack heads
I’d take this over any soloist out there

To play this 'funk', you need to have a nice groove!
excelente!!! me mata el groove que tiene steve!!!
He's a Pro Drummer. If you want the best you hire Mr. Ferrone.
Alta Classe.
Fucking badass shit...!!! top 10 on my list...
Groove with a capital G, lot of drummers these day's hide behind technical stuff but can't play a groove for longer then 8 bars.
So true
@4:22 Jez from Peep Show: 'Holy shit, I'm actually doing it! I'm playing funk guitar in a big band!!! Wait til Super Hans hears about this.'
...Reminds a little of Sonny Emory with EWF, thean in His Prime !!
The weirdest thing about this clip is that he seems to be playing a "World Series" jazz kit. Anyone else notice that?
The Groovemeister
If only to be standing in that room.
killer groove and killer sound, when I listen to Ferrone on some recording session I can't believe it. Liste to "earth song" by M. Jackson, I've never heard a sound like that, he is demolition man :) my favorite groove master ever
I gotcha....you're one of "those".
yo those drums sound good.. At 5:15 i thought someone was playing congo drums but it was all just his snare drum.
Kenny Aronoff did the percussion parts.
Check out what he is doing with that hi-hat, not that simple. Great groove.
"Salt peanutsz-salt peanutz"

his cymbals are so high I'm 6'3 and don't Like mine up that high I love Steve ferrone playing just the cymbals are so high up
jerroud mitchell it was the time, all the toms were deeper, I'm guessing, they did that to compensate. He has his stuff much lower now, I've never liked deep toms.
anyone know how to make the snare sound like that ?
I wonder how many of those guys got yelled at on the bus by Buddy...
A new album of Steve Ferrone Live is available here :
www.franckbedez.com/steveferroneandfriends
When I do record this, I won't play it so straight
How you gonna come up in here with a kazoo taped to a saxaphone, brothaman!!
Lol!
Groovalicous. So good. I still prefer Stan’s playing with Petty, though. Not even in Steve’s league, chops-wise.....but his feel on the early Heartbreakers records was hugely influential to me.
What is the name of the soprano saxophonist on 2:34, please?
I'm new in jazz, obviously.
I know it's 4 years since your question, but I myself have to search for that guy everytime I listen to that amazing solo, so here it is: his name is Steve Marcus. :-)
speed 1.25 = James
it's your opinion ^^
I'm not a drummer but can anyone tell me what that playing style is? I am speaking of how he holds his stick with the left one bent and the right straight on.
it's not really a style, it's just a way to hold a stick - a grip, that's how drummers call it. this particular grip is called traditional grip
I think comes from the old military grip.
teepriest exactly
unklemoses

What brand of drums did he use .
Roy Beckerman - Hard to tell as you can’t see a badge anywhere. Hardware and rack and lugs look like Pearls so that would be my guess.
At that time -> Pearl
Nowadays -> Gretsch.
contrary to popular belief,
1 has2hav serious technique
2pull off anything
Steve Ferrone plays
12 thumbs down? lol...clowns.
hihats he made a live AWB person to Person album in 79 were you can't find a better Funk drummer on earth till forever .
