  • Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott Goldfine - musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk" -- this is the music interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in this episode (Part 3 of 3): Hamish Stuart, an original lead singer and guitarist/bassist for Scotland’s Average White Band. Other original band members included singer/bassist Alan Gorrie, guitarist Onnie McIntyre, sax players Molly Duncan and Roger Ball, and drummer Robbie McIntosh, who overdosed in 1974 and was replaced by Steve Ferrone. The six-member act became famous after its funky, primarily instrumental “Pick Up the Pieces” was a pop smash in 1974.
From 1974-1978, AWB was among the best and bestselling funk-R&B bands, with classic tracks including the funky “TLC,” “Cut the Cake,” “School Boy Crush,” “Goin’ Home,” “I’m the One,” “The Message” and “Your Love Is a Miracle”; the soulful “If I Ever Lose This Heaven” and “Queen of My Soul”; and ballads like “Cloudy” and “A Love of Your Own.” With the original lineup disbanding in 1983, Stuart and Ferrone built up their resumes doing session work and live support for superstars like Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton and many others. Recently Stuart, Duncan and Ferrone reunited to form a new group called the 360 Band, whose debut album has just been released.
In this three-part series, Stuart discusses AWB’s early years, rise to stardom, tragedy, classic songs and albums, life on the road, the band’s demise, life as an ace session player, and reuniting on a new project with former band members.

AWB gave the world some of the funkiest music that will always be appreciated, I'm thankful to have the experience of being around when AWB came out. Thanks Hamish!!!!!!!!!!!

Hamish has the most distinctive voice that I miss hearing from the Average White Band. No other person can do. You can try to get a soul brother to do, but it's not that chemistry the group had. I grew up listening to soul and funk music and each band player in that group was unique. They all had this chemistry that removing just one band person from that group, is just not the same. Only Steve Ferrone taking place of Robbie McIntosh worked since Steve is phenomenal. Again, Hamish has a unique voice that I truly miss hearing from the currently playing Average White Band.

My mum always loved Hamish's mum's voice in the church choir, perhaps there's a genetic component for such a wonderful soul voice!

I just subscribed to your channel Scott. I would always enjoy reading liner notes on my favorite performers. Your program certainly satisfies my passion to a different level. Thanks!!
And to start off with a Hamish interview--Wow. I didn't get to Miami to see them about 2 years ago but enjoyed the clips that were posted. AWB's set just blew the crowd away!! They really had it going on. I'll check out his new group. I just know he will bring his grove to the mix.

This 3 part interview was superb, covering the artists entire career to the date of the interview with no huge parts missing. As Hamish was disappointed with the two Arista LP's I decided to get them out and give them a listen again. On Shine, check the lyrics to Our Time Has Come, which to me clearly indicate the frustration of the band's plight given the number of non AWB contributors: "To be running in our own race, that's all we're asking for." I agree the version of Whatcha Gonna Do is poor, it has no bite whatsoever. Sadly Shine comes across as a made to fulfill a contract record and is just average as a result of such. Even Michael Boddicker's synth work doesn't seem to shine through as it does with numerous other artists. However, as far as Cupid's In Fashion goes, I feel this is a decent LP and there are some stand out cuts on it to be proud of. Love's A Heartache is phenomenal. Both Isn't It Strange and Is It Love You're Running From are excellent too. I Believe is a decent track but the version recorded by The Real Thing and released earlier in June 1981 [in UK & France only] is far superior. Would like to have heard Hamish's thoughts on James Brown's reply record, the Above Average Black Band - Pick Up The Pieces One By One, well worth checking out www.discogs.com/AABB-Pick-Up-The-Pieces-One-By-One-COLD/release/701881
A big thanks to Hamish and Scott for such an in depth interview.

I don't know what you are talking about, I was a lifelong AWB fan, and Whatcha gonna do was played extensively by me. Hamish Stuart's vocals were excellent. I loved the Album. In fact, I love Hamish version better than Chaka Khan.
I purchase every AWB album growing up, Shine was one of my favorite album. The following Album Cupids in Fashion was disappointing. Except easier said than done sung by Hamish.

    • @martinsmusic2223

@@sgomes633 One of the reasons AWB were so successful was because of their "attention to detail." If you'd listened to the interview carefully you would have noticed that the majority of the comments in my original posting were with reference and in general agreement to those that were made by the artist.

Waterlec Gorrie’s “Sleepless Nights” didn’t do so hot but Hamish would team up with Steve Ferrone, Anthony Jackson, & Rene (I forgot her last name) for the Easy Pieces Project (Both of them were on A&M Records ironically !!!)

Alan was always jealous of Hammish, He was the Voice that made them, Alan is a great bass player, but can't sing, that is the bottom line.

Alan is an average singer and talented musician but Hammish was the voice of AWB.

    • @rodneytaylor609
      @rodneytaylor609 Месяц назад

Alan can sing, but didn't sing the high register like Hamish Stuart did. They both had nice timber , i believe Hamish was more successful while writing and singing in AWB. I know for a fact that Alan was jealous, but he was the band leader and starting member/owner, thats why Hamish had to go out on his own. He picked up gigs with David sanborn and Paul Mccarthy and then created his own band.
