    Great episode Ryan! I love what Blackmagic is doing for independent film. When you combine their hardware with their software, professional quality results have never been more accessible for regular working class filmmakers. They've had Adobe on its toes more and more with their continual improvements to Resolve, and now Canon and Sony are feeling the heat as well. Love it.

    I have been looking but can't find...I need to see if there is an adapter for my M4/3 lenses that can fit to this Canon EF. I see a lot of the other way around fitting canon lenses on the 4/3 but I cannot find anything otherwise.

    • @Tom_artist
      @Tom_artist 3 года назад +3

      they don't exist, its to do with flange lengths and image circles, you can put larger lenses on smaller frames but not smaller on large, if you did you'll find focus issues and alot of vignetting.

    • @paul.grohmann
      @paul.grohmann 3 года назад +8

      Especially bc you're going to have to buy them anyways for your lenses. And if you buy good ones you easyly spend more. Same with the extra batteries that you'd have to buy going with the normal one. Still need them, but not as many. You're probably saving some money in the long term

    • @professionalpotato4764

      Totally. A good set of NDs is already more than the difference between the regular 6K and the 6K pro. Plus the better battery and swivel screen are an opus upgrades. This was a great move by blackmagic.

      To be honest I have seen some reviews already popping up of the ND filters having decent tints, the higher the stop the higher the tint, which indicates that the ND filters are not as high quality as some claim.

    Thanks for taking the time to produce this excellent report. Very much enjoyed it. Quick question, what is the audio quality/ internal Amp like when you plus in a shot gun mic using a xlr to mini xlr into the camera. I'm thinking about using this camera for foreign trips so I can travel much lighter in terms of equipment (current have an Arri Amira set up) and I would need to plug a shotgun mic which I boom for interviews straight into this camera. Would the audio be good enough or would you need an external recorder? Thanks in advance, Sparky

  • @mjlagrone

    I like that it also has two mini-xlr inputs rather than just one. I really wish it had SDI out. HDMI is always a hair lagy when pulling focus. If someone made an extension for the EVF that would make up for the lack of SDI. Now I'm curious how hard it would be to make said extension myself... hmm....

    Nice upgrades all around (what the original 6K should have been), but the biggest misstep for me is the EF-mount. RF would made it MUCH more versatile and worth upgrading from previous versions. As much as I like the upgrades and built-in ND would be quite nice, I'll stick with my BMPCC 4K. Maybe the BMPCC 6K "Max" or "Ultra" will have RF mount?

    I see lots of people wishing for IBIS, but I think it’s important to note that you’d also be sacrificing some things by incorporating that. With most “cinema” cameras it is often assumed you will be doing your own stabilization, and cameras with IBIS often have issues using these forms of stabilization. For example, adding IBIS makes it unusable as a crash cam in cars due to the micro jitters and jello. IBIS also makes it more difficult to fit internal NDs into the camera body. As usual, I think it comes down to what tool works best for what you’re doing.

    • @marcuscisneros8528
      @marcuscisneros8528 3 года назад +6

      If rather have IBIS than internal ND tbh, i can always screw on a variable ND to a lens and use step up rings. i love being able to move a camera handheld and know it will be smooth

    • @kolecava
      @kolecava 3 года назад +7

      I just don't get this IBIS need. No, no thank you. I can use my body or just heavier setup and slowmotion to make it "shake free" or just get OIS lens. I think people who request this are certainly not experienced or really have the need for this camera. Same for continuous AF, I'd love it, but it's not truly needed. All it would do is add unnecessary costs ..

    • @kolecava
      @kolecava 3 года назад +2

      @@marcuscisneros8528 just use your body, I don't want anything correcting my image unless I choose to. Additionally, IRNDs are great for run and gun or times where you simply do not have time on shoot schedule to be messing with matte boxes and screw ons. I think IBIS is rather amateur request considering there is pleathora of ways to combat it. If anything for solo run and gun shooters AF would be better, but then maybe the cinema line isn't really what you are looking for.

    • @imiy
      @imiy 3 года назад +5

      @@kolecava slowmo just for sake of "stabilizing" - that is amateur.
      Anyway, all those features improve the filming process and make it more accessible. There's no point of saying "cinema cameras don't have IBIS and AF, and that's it". Like you're not pro if requesting that. Like it's some kind of religious burden "pros" must carry for some magical reason. Bullshit! Everything is changing. If focus pullers and dollies, gimbals, and steadicams won't be needed anymore at some point - that will be a huge relief and a big step forward.

    Thank you Ryan. Great review from the practical use perspective---a feature all too often lacking in some many youtube "reviews." Very welcome and refreshing as compared to "specks videos."
    I love the results of my Pocket 6k, but the ND filters are too good to resist in this new iteration.
    The beauty and convenience NOT to have to futz with variable ND filters is a tremendous step forward all by itself.
    I really like the fact that BMD has done this new iteration with a laser-like focus on the camera's main weakness: Usability. They've fixed most everything that made usage difficult without changing all the things that make the camera a joy to shoot.

    Great video. As a someone who shoots primarily Still Art Photography, this looks like a natural evolution for doing some motion street shoots. Just curious if you know how many of the Canon EF/EF-S Art Lens it uses? For pro videographers or film pros I know that cinema lens are a must. But, for those of us that are going to be focused largely on light impacts, and don't have to worry as much about making actors or products look good, the Canon Art lens might be sufficient. Again, thanks for the info. Great channel.

  • @ToastedSynapseGaming
    @ToastedSynapseGaming 3 года назад +3

    There's an interesting battle between IBIS (in-body stabilization) and Internal NDs. And I kind of get the physics behind it, since the sensor needs to move, but it also needs to stay still in relation to the ND glass. So the solution is kind of finicky. Design an IBIS strong enough to move the ND together with the sensor (but you also have ND motors and cables)
    OR, what I think would be the next step in the future, because we already have a glimpse of that in today's cameras: A LOT of Native ISOs (including very low ISOs), as ISOs in digital cameras are just basically reading/amplifying/dampening the sensitivity of the sensor. Think of it like your mobile phone charger that takes a lot of Volts out of a wall socket and transforms it into less Volts for your phone. So a Dual Native ISO basically means 2 "Transformers" attached to the same sensor, and the camera switches between the 2 when it reaches a certain ISO. So how about we have 10-20 Native ISOs, including LOWER ISOs. I'm talking ISO 20, 10, 5 or even ISO 1. That will be your ND filter, the Electrical Ability of your camera to Lower the sensitivity of what the sensor is seeing. Similar to how Volume knobs lower the amplitude of the sound that is being heard on the speakers.
    I'm calling it now, in 5-10 years we'll be debating whether to get this 20 Native ISO camera or the other one that has 25 Native ISOs... And this is because "parts" are becoming smaller as we evolve (so you can maybe fit 4 transformers in the space of 1) but also more complex so maybe you can have a transformer that handles like 4 bands within the same circuit.

    Was nice to hear comments comparing the bmpcc4k with this camera as (it seems) everyone else is only comparing the two 6k’s! I hope BM do a 4K pro for all those that have invested in M43’s! Also, many older computer systems struggle with 6k, factoring in a new NLE system is not for everyone! Most material shot that is delivered online is never higher than 4K, moreover, still a huge majority of it is HD. Sure, it’s nice to be able to crop, built-in ND’s, tillable screen.. but we’re talking only ergonomics. However, from my understanding of IBS, I’m not sure (with current technology) that this would be a wise move as users have complained with the GH5 that this can detrimentally affect the image.. there are videos on this I believe. After all, Arri don’t use IBS on their mini cameras, though I must admit this doesn’t mean that in principle this is not a good idea, and of course technology will improve.
    Still a great camera by the looks of it. Food for thought eh?! Thanks for the review.

    I’m new to filming and am looking for a quality camera for as close to cinema-like video for filming in my music studio. I’ve been looking at traditional DSLR cameras (in the 2K or lower price range) with video capability and was leaning toward a Sony A7iii. I like the idea of having a normal picture camera for photography but the main and real reason I want is for videos in my studio so that’s not a requirement. Should I get one of these (or the 4K) instead? Cause man some of this footage is really in the vein of the look I want and I’m willing to spend a little more to get what I really am looking for. Any responses would be greatly appreciated thanks!

    The only two things I wish you had talked about was timecode and audio features. Still a great review overall though. :)

    How is the noise of the fan in the 6k pro? Does anybody know? I've heard, that the fan of the 6k is a bit louder than the one on the 4k..

    What I really apreciate on a filmmaking camera: built in ND, XLR outs with 48 volt, bright flip monitor with false colour, good codecs til 120p and amamorphic options, good battery life, SDI would be nice.
    What I don`t need: IBIS, follow focus, EVF, 20000 ISO.

    Love to see a cable to use the EVF away from the camera. I'm getting to old to lay on my stomach to see a shot. I know the new display is more functional, but sometimes the camera is in a weird location and using the EVF instead of carrying around an external seems like something I would like.

    I am excited for the possibilities. Blackmagic has a camera for everyone now. The 6K pro looks great. For the next steps I am getting paid to do this work, the 6K pro looks great. I like the EF mount so if you shoot Canon and EF glass there your system just got nicer. Very nice to know and glad I saw this video.

    I want to know if it's possible to attach a 100 old Kodak lens on this camera that shoots 6k.

    someone can tell me if you can use Panasonic Lumix Gh5 lenses or if there are all different lenses to buy and which one. Anyway, very good honest review.

    This may be a stupid question but I've only ever own a Canon DSLR 5D Mark II... I'm wondering can the Canon lenses attach to the Black Magic? Or do they need lenses of their own?

    EF mount is epic. I'm looking to add some canon lenses for my older DSLR, good to know they can grow with me if I decide blackmagic is the direction to go

    On that denoise outside at iso 8000, did you downres to 4k? Cause that would help even more

    • @BNC593
      @BNC593 3 года назад

      If your shoot in prores internally it downsampled to 4K, but yes you’re right, for BRAW, shoot 6k, then downsample in post to 4K. This setup will reduce noise and you will have BRAW and control of the metadata.
