    I really don't undestand that amount of people commenting on every video that they need autofocus because they are operating solo... I have been operating solo all my life (20 years working as a cameraman) and I have always focused myself.
    I have shot commercials, news stuff, short films, real estate videos, weddings... It's not that difficult to focus correctly!
    I just can't understand the "NEED" to have an stellar autofocus feature.
    Learn your screen, learn to focus! It's a really valuable skill in our profession 😄

    • @CostaSparrow
      @CostaSparrow 2 года назад +4

      Put good prime FF lens on, set aperture at 1.2 and try to shoot close up of a talent during expressive scene, then you have only eyes in focus, but this focus should be nailed down despite head movement. Or put it on gimbal and try to make smooth transition from full/medium shot to close up. And you'll understand. A7s3's autofocus can make things not any good focus puller can, not to mention solo shooting.

    • @omargonzalez3081
      @omargonzalez3081 2 года назад +3

      @@CostaSparrow yes but you're talking about a very very specific situation. How often have you had to do a close up shot with 1.2 AND on a gimbal? I doubt its very often. Almost all films are shot manually. Look at NFL videos. Those shots are all focused manually. Yes a camera can have fantastic autofocus, but it can't tell a story. We as the camera operator do that. You can shoot with either one and still get really good footage, you just have to ask yourself what your needs are.

    • @CostaSparrow
      @CostaSparrow 2 года назад +2

      @@omargonzalez3081 Actually, quite often on my shoots. Very shallow DOF is a powerful tool and it can dramatically improve your storytelling and visual quality if you know how to use it. As well as shifting from close up to medium/full shot in one shot, remember famous scene from Citizen Cane, people study it in cinema schools, cinematographers needed a whole crew to accomplish it but now everyone can do it just with good gimbal and Sony camera. This is fantastic.
      As for manual focus on big productions, it’s not that simple, as it seems. Super35 sensor (Arri Alexa, Alexa Mini, etc) have less shallow DOF, it's easier. Focus pullers have their own working limits and can easily say to you that he would not go below 2.8 or you can take it on your own risk. You need to have very experienced focus puller in your team if you want to shoot on FF on open apertures, make focus rehearsals, but even with all this you still need to ask for additional takes from time to time because of focus mistakes.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo 2 года назад +4

      @@omargonzalez3081 exactly, I don't see the need at all for having every shot at 1.2 on a full frame camera. I just don't get it, it's not my thing at all. Some images would require shallow depth of field, some would not. Most of the time is only used for aesthetical reasons, not other reason at all.
      I have seen videos with a really shallow depth of filed in most of their shots and they were unwatchable.
      But it's a personal choice. I just don't get the "Need! Need! " part.

      @@CostaSparrow It's about horses for courses, the SONY can of course be used with a crew but the fact is that it makes a perfect solo shooter camera. If Sony had a native raw format that could be used in-camera, it would be a perfect tool for just about everything.

    Thoughtful video thanks. Having owned two APSC sonys and really enjoyed them until I outgrew them on a few levels (8bit, 1080 slo-mo, overheating, 30min record limits etc) I went to a BMPCC 4K. Took me ages to really come to grips with it but I really love it now. Sometimes I wonder if I would've like the A7siii better but some of the limitations you've articulated here would drive me nuts. I don't actually have any problem being a solo shooter with a fully manual, rigged cine cam and I feel like I'm still just scratching the surface of what I can do with this camera. Obviously you have to do all the work that the sony would do for you, but it's a different type of film making and the more I'm constrained by that, the more I love it. Now I think a lot more about adding P6K one day or maybe even a Komodo - but not a Sony. As a hybrid camera, yes, Sony all the way. Still use and love my two for photos and occasional video use (and they still hold up after all these years!)

    I’m surprised about your battery experience with the 6k Pro. My batteries last about an hour each. And if I use the battery grip, I can shoot for about three hours straight with the 6k Pro. I did buy their original batteries because the off brand ones did not last as long. It’s a fantastic camera. The only thing I wish it had is a continuous auto focus. I haven’t used it for RUclips, but I’m planning on it soon when I go back to making videos after some challenges during the past few months with work and personally. Thank you for taking the time to do good videos. I think you’re a classy guy. Cheers!

      Thanks! If you're going to be doing any kind of live switching, there's really no choice. BMD as you has just has everything you need and it all talks to each other! Sony feels like it'll be more trouble than it's worth tbh. But if you're shooting to be edited later, Sony is great!

    • @polaroidsky
      @polaroidsky 2 года назад +1

      Haven't used the A1, but currently own the 6k Pro and have to say that shooting with it is a blast. It's so clean and organized. BMD has really honed in the color science and knows what buttons to prioritize on the exterior. In comparison, the Sony A7III feels like a little kids you or a TikTok camera, even though I know it’s capable of capturing compelling footage. 6k RAW plays smoothly in Premiere at 1/4 quality on half-decent computers without proxies (God bless BMD's codec).
      The one issue I’ve had with it is its size. If you are going to get a gimbal for it, make sure there’s plenty of clearance on all sides for this camera because it is awkwardly large (especially in width). Doesn't feel too awkward in the hand, but I haven't been able to get it to balance properly with the Ronin S gimbal because it barely fits. In addition the weight isn't evenly distributed so trying to balance the tilt axis has been a headache. You can easily buy a better gimbal though with the money you save over the A1. Hope that helps and lemme know what you decide!

      MC-11 will work perfectly fine with my two sigmas, one being 18-35 and the other being 24-105.
      18-35 is usable at 24mm mark and wider. 24-105 is fine because it is designed for full frame.

    f1.8 x 1.56 (crop) = 2.808 (in Full Frame 1.0 Crop). So It doesn't make any difference if you have f1.8 on a crop sensor or f2.8 on a full frame sensor. Now 18-35 is about 24-50 on full frame. So I think a 24-70mm is a bit better than. I would have gotton Sigma 24-70 and not Tamron.

    In my opinion there is not much sense to compare the BMPCC to the current mirrorless line up of cameras.
    The BMPCC in my opinion is best shot fully rigged out with cage, external SSD, v-mount battery and follow focus. If you are really serious you can even throw nice cine lenses on there.
    Working with that package the missing image stabilisation doesnt matter so much, because the mass of the setup eliminiates micro shakes and you do shoot in a different style anyway. the camera produces beautiful images and BRaw is a joy to use in davinci resolve

    Nope, your thought process is sound. The Blackmagic is more for when you have a crew and that's how we use them. Blackmagic raw gives so much leeway in the editing process, especially with Davinchi. The sony on the other hand with its auto focus and other features is great for a one-man band. Every job doesn't require the 6k and it saves you time with the smaller body.

Neither mount is "more versatile". They both require adapters to put any non-proprietary lenses on. Also, yes, resolution IS everything. Saying it isn't is kind of silly. That's like saying a cinema film can be in 720p and it's fine, which is clearly not the case. Resolution is possibly the biggest quality determinant of all.

Anyone that says otherwise is just puffing up his own pride and has overconfidence in his "skill" as a photographer. People in this age have already become accustomed to high resolution videos, and they are looking for the next best thing. No one is going to accept sub-par resolution. The argument could be made that resolution and good gear are THE most important thing.

      @@blossommediastudios And I would love to see any evidence of that. Any competent, artistic person can learn almost all there is about photography in a year or so if they put their mind to it. Film school is just an overrated way to dump loads of cash into a for-profit business that serves the self-inflated egos of people that think they are special because they went to film school. Also, the difference between a RED and a 1080p is not enough to make a difference. Those resolutions are both decent resolutions that the average consumer is used to. Try to make that argument comparing a RED to a 480p phone video from 1999, and you'll get my point. The number one most important thing that will determine if someone watches your video in the first few seconds is the resolution and gear. After that, they might stay long enough for the story. Even then, it doesn't take a "film student" or rocket scientists to create a decent story.
