Life lessons by John Maxwell
Pro tip!
Instablaster...
I don't even have a Harley yet and I still watch your videos.
Your welcome buddy,,, and I watch not only cause your fun to watch and you are a good tech ,, but ya never know what you can learn watching others.. they may have a better faster or more effective way of doing something..esp on M8 models seeing as everyone is doing things for the first time... anyway buddy thanks for the video and kind words !!!
PhatboyHD88 hey John that was from.me too...
Ok not really but I thought it!
Very cool gift (even if it was a shameless plug grab.) :)
Thanks for the nice gift! And always watching! One of these days I’ll make it up north!
Damn cuz your from Johnstown. I'm from Fallentimber, I now live in South Carolina.
Nice technical vlog, gives us mere mortals some idea of what to do, you're doing so well with the channel John --- congratulations 👍😎
Thanks Geoff!
Thanks man! I like it when you put links in the description of tools that you use. Have a good week!
I’m gonna try to start doing that. It’s just a matter of thinking of questions before they happen!
Dyna days yessssssss
Great info John!! I always look forward to you videos! Thanks for the hard work!
glad to see that you are back to showing bike work
Yes, vacation is officially over. Back to work!
Great videos! Keep em coming! Anytime I repair a front end collision on a bike I replace the front bearings and races. If it hit hard enough to bend the forks, triple tree or the neck it's always a good idea to replace the Bearings and races. I've come across cracked bearing cages (housings) on bikes that I repaired. The bearings have to come out to do front frame repair anyway, and that's when I inspect them. I look forward to your videos, they're very informative.
Top notch as always buddy!
Bet you're stoked as hell for the dealer show I know I sure as hell would be. Looking forward to new vids 👍👍
Thanks for doing what your doing, I have learned a lot. I start school in July. Keep doing what v your doing.
Great Info = love watching, yet, as always, the Professional ( Yes, You John!) - knows the Tricks & Techniques that makes "IT" look easy & Simple! We, "general public Types" appreciate your input ,so we know "Let the Professionals do IT" ( usually less hassles despite the $$$ cost!)
THANKS!
Passenger pegs were the first "mod" I did on my FXDLS...... easily the hardest thing I had to do haha. GREAT VID!
I saw a subber post about hitting the like button before he watched the video....I Just did it,and now we wait...Continue on Sir John.
Thanks man!
alright, alright....I know the suspense is killin' ya....for a young tech...Man,you have got it together.Good Video! I hope your enthusiasm for what you do continues well after your hair turns to silver.
Me too, especially since it’s already there on the sides...
Thanks for all the tips I am a certified MMI student of Harley-Davidson I appreciate everything you're doing keeps me going since I'm not in a shop yet graduated 2020 still looking in Texas close to Dallas text around here are ready there at Shops keep up the good work
Decided to subscribe today. Have been watching your videos for a while. I do know what you are talking about here. But it's always nice to learn new tips and tricks. Just gives me more knowledge and info to share. Thanks John.
Hey John. Love your videos. I happen to be a Service and Body Shop Director for a large new car auto dealer group. Keep it up man guys like you with the passion are a dying breed. I happen to be a brand new first time Harley owner. I traded my custom Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer in for a FLSB Sport Glide. This bike changed my entire perception of Harley. I always look forward to you vids. Thanks
Thanks for the encouragement, and congrats on the new ride!
Hi I'm Gerald I'm also a Harley Tech you're the main reason I became Harley technician it's been fun I'm just having a hard time finding a dealership that is hiring it's winter time LOL love what you do keep it up you're awesome hope to meet you one day.
Thanks John. Love your tech tips.
Thanks John, another cool informative vid....please keep 'em coming!
Will do
Even watched the 5 minute ad for you...on my phone...then paused and went to my desktop, and watched another 3 minute...I hope those help you...Your videos help me. Cheers!!!
useful on the bearings. getting my 30.000(48.000 km) miles service this week on my RG.
You have inspired me to start down a path towards becoming a motorcycle mechanic as my dream job(automotive mechanic 2nd always need a back up) but I've got to love your content and thank you for the inspiration and keep up the good work.
Awesome. It’s a fun day in and day out for sure!
I shoulda tinkered on bikes years ago. It will save your back instead of leaning over engine bays. Working on a bike is like painting a fine piece of art... X)
True, I couldn’t do cars. I’m spoiled!
Now I find the passenger foot peg install after I did mine last year. Thank you
I love how scatterbrained you are, I too am scatterbrained. Keep up the good work, you make it look easy.
Sometimes it makes it hard to piece it all together. Lots of cuts, haha
John you came up with all the nice gifts!! Wow A lot of work to put the back foot peg on a Dana! It was super easy To put on my passenger half moon footboard on my 16FLSS.. lol Great video enjoyed it!👍🏻 Thanks
Digging the peg install tip.
Thanks for the info I was just wondering about my 96 FXD when I should look at the neck bearings. I got about 5k left before the first interval but it will probably be a good winter project.
My 2015 Ultra needs the neck bearings repacked at 25,000 miles after checking the tool prices on your links, guess mines going to the dealer for that service. Love your videos man.
John, great videos! I have subscribed and really like the instructions. I just greased the neck bearings on my 2017 Street Glide 30K service. Totally agree with you about just replacing the bearings since it takes so much labor to get down to the frame. On this model, the frame head section is a single contained tube with upper and lower races. It looks like it would be easy to drill, tap and install a zerk grease fitting. Had I been prepared, I would have installed it. By the way, the bearings had very little grease and at 2 years in service, there was a small amount of wear lines appearing.
Thanks as always for the great information.
John, this was a very interesting video. Thank you for this.
Hey John, thanks another cool vlog, always interesting and lots of cool information, looking forward to your next vlog 😃👍
A Noob tech here.Ive been on the job a week and a half and love it. Gale's Harley Davidson, Grandview MO. I love your videos. Big O dirty thumbs up.
Congrats on the new job! The other guys helping ya out?
John Maxwell thanks.yeah they are really helpful
John, hello from Harley-Davidson Louisville where I am the Parts and MotorClothes Manager. A few guys in parts stay follow your channel, see you at the Dealer Show.
That’ll be awesome! I’ll be the goofball walking around with a camera!
I have an `03 FLHRPi with 122,000 on the clock and I haven`t done the neck bearings yet...although I`m thinking about it when I rebuild the forks( for the first time!!!!)...Good vids, and great editing...keep up the good work !!
Nice...love watching the Pro's do these jobs - you make them look so quick and easy! Doesn't translate to the DIY'er garage like mine haha! Look forward to your wheel bearing vid because I'll be doing mine soon.
Really enjoy the videos! I’m a tech at patriot Harley Davidson in fairfax va and have told numerous guys at the shop to check out your channel!
Thanks Tyler!
Love your vids I also went to MMI but in Phoenix. I'm not a tech anymore but still play in my garage on my bikes. 1970 Suzuki t500 cafe and a 98 dyna lowrider. A cheap way to get a scissor lift is to take one out of a car and have plates welded on the top and bottom works great and I think I got 20 bucks in it. Just wanted to say keep up the good work...
Good video John.Neck bearings and or adjustment on touring models would be awesome. Also front fork oil replacement and disassembly/removal of front forks on touring would be great.
Congratulations on the dealer show , and it never surprises me how people will cheap out when you are in that far that’s a no brainer
I own a street glide and to get to the steering head bearings is a $250 ish job in labour new bearings are a no brainer. You will be amazed how many people don't replace inexpensive parts only to pay twice for the job to be done later. Either that or they skip jobs like fork oil changes and wonder why odd amounts of grey gloop isn't as good as fresh oil.
Great video as always . RIP dyna . Expensive passenger foot peg install . I did it on my 13 streetbob .
Enjoy the videos. I own a carbureted 04 Fatboy.
I’ve done neck bearings in my old Suzuki GS but never my Fatboy.
Actually, I’ve never done anything to my Fatboy, except oil changes and bolt on doodads.
Great info as usual!! 👍🏻
Great vid as always john.
Hey John, I have a 2016 Ultra Limited with 13,000 miles. I put new tires on 3,000 miles ago, Michelin Comanders. It was happening at low speed, but now at 50mph I sometimes get a very, very bad wobble in the front. It doesn't happen all the time, but does happen often.
Another great video ... keep up the good work.
I just got me an old car scissor jack with metal plates a friend welded to it. 10$ junkyard deals.
Thanks John! You da man!
If their was a tech like you at anyone of the dealerships by me I would not work on my scoot. Great informative material as always. LTMV & Until Next Time...
Thanks Nick.
Exactly what Nick said, except I'm new to this and I have to trust the mechanic. Wish you'd do a video on how to find a great mechanic. (Oh I'm sorry is that my man card on the ground?) 😮
Thanks man another great video down.
Another great info. video like the jack. have a great week
Awesome video John.
Thanks Hotrod!
Another good informative and humorous video from the man J.M. I'm one of the thousands on the bell squad 👍
Thanks Kenneth!
Yep me too. Need to try to get my doc bills paid so I can do the upgrade to the Patreon¿ deal.
John Maxwell hey you said ask how I know not to use a little grease when installing the race into the neck, and I’m real curious since I just did! Please splain. Thanks
that one tool that your putting the races in with I made a tool just about like the one that your using. Got a couple foot 5/8's all thread, some real hard washers and nuts.use 2 washer on each side to keep from bending. Works just like yours. Be safe
I just bought a 2000 FXDWG.
I'm in the process of replacing the stock Fork springs with new Progressive Suspension Springs.
I need a Jim's Bearing Tool, to inspect/replace neck bearings, while I'm in there.
Another Dirty Thumbs UP!! Thank you John. Keep those how to vids coming. I also appreciate the extra info you add about the tools you use and recommend. ----Shirts? When you getting shirts for us Fans?
Thanks great job thanks for the tips
Glad you enjoyed Scott!
Five years later, that K&L Jack that John is discussing at 9:57 is $342.00 instead of $243.00 mentioned in the video, that's your current price including the FJB increase. Wow. K&L makes good stuff, I have their blue dolly that is awesome.
Cool video, thank you.
Hey John, thanks for all the awesome videos! I have a 07 Wide Glide with 56k and never even thought about neck bearing maintainence. Still rides and runs like new. I do all my own fluid changes and easy stuff but I guess my question is, what problems have you found with the twin cam 96 with high miles if any? It has a breather kit and Reinharts but other than that, pretty stock, bad ass engine. Thanks again for all you do. Ride safe.
Subscribed, love the vids.
Great Video, Surprise Birthday for friend on Friday at Taco Mac in Newnan, so...No Bike Night for me. Congrats on Dealer show, that's badass. Keep On Keepin On.
Oh Shit...hope he's not a subscriber...Bwahahahaha
Thanks, man!
Zepka harley is a good spot great riding in western pa! Coming from a eastern pa guy!
Nice video. Enjoyed the vlogs with blockhead.
I had a good time. Safe bet that we do it again!
Dat FXDLS, and great video as always ! Keep up the dyna content!! Mr.Maxwell is it common for the 18 softails to have some grease seepage from the neck bearings? Noticed little residue near the neck. Love the videos brother! 👍🏻😎
I'm a big fan of Zerk fittings in steering necks, and I did make that mistake with a Dyna >once< - now if I'm servicing a front end for a preferred customer, I will take the time to epoxy a thin sheet metal plate over that hole inside the steering neck and install neck bearings with rubber lip seals so the grease doesn't dribble all over the fender when it gets hot.
Cool video
I KNOW ITS A LITTLE EXTRA STEP but when i knock out my upper race i lay a towel or rag across the top so when and if it shoots out the towel adds some weight to keep it from launching into my truck window
Great videos John. Looking for a video of adjust steering stem wobble or neck bearings. Haven’t seen any really online that go over how to adjust loose steering. Is that something you think you can give us?
Nice Kershaw Knife!!!
That is awesome video John specifically the Jack you recommended, I was looking to get one and that is the one I am going to order, also any recommendations for hydraulic jack that will lift the whole bike of the ground, that will handle a 2018 fat boy?
Thanks for the videos
Do raked cups cause problems?
I want to add a little rake to a Dyna, going from Superglide rake to Wideglide rake if I can.
Hey John, just a quick shout out to say how much I enjoy your channel..
Also, have you done a video on the ultra classic head beaings/wobble issues?
40k on my used 2005 and noticed it has wobble.. will check tire pressure and grease fitting... but was hoping you had some "highly untrained professional" input...
Keep up the great content.
Zepka is the shop where I'm from!
Can do a video on how to fix bike wobbles? Ive noticed some on the highway with my 04 Dyna.
OMG on the zerk fitting.
I have learned a lot since I subscribed two months ago.
Ken
I kinda miss the big puff of smoke outta the vape... at least ya got that camera slap. Bam!
Nice vid.
Love that technical name. Big f-ing hammer. I call mine the attitude adjuster.
You can always use a small scissor jack with brake disk welded to it.
Do you have any specific tips for the Dyna Switchback FLD??
I have a 2016 Road King. I would like my floor boards to be canted upwards similar to the Softtails. Is there a H-D or an after market part that will seamlessly to this on the Road King.
Oh, good video today. But what else is new!
Thanks
How about a Vid regarding front wheel chalks for the home do it guy! If they're... I don't know available.
John I just picked up a 17 Dyna Low Rider S. Like I said before luv the videos. Would like to know your input on fuel pack 3? Pricy so don’t know if it is worth it. It’s my first American bike. Still getting used to it. All the best to you.
Inexpensive parts on a Harley lol
Techn' Moto under 100$ is inexpensive lol
I buy a lot of used stuff if its not a wear item. It does save a lot of money but it takes patience for the right stuff to come along at the right price.
I got my neck bearings for 25 bucks... all balls
I’ll be at the bike night Friday and dropping mine off Saturday morning for some work
Cool! Look forward to seeing you!
Love your videos John . keep them coming brother !!! "15" fxdwg
👍DIRTY THUMBS UP 👍
I’d like to hear you talk about front endWobble and how to stop it :)
I have never seen the Neck Races done before. Lisle makes a tool for pressing in Seals and Races. Its for Automotive. Only does one race a time. The HD tool pulls both in together. I'm guessing not a lot of torque is needed? The Jack you used, I bought one from Northern tools. Only cost me $100 or so. Mine came with Adapters to grab high frames. Since I store mine in the garage, And it doesn't get used much, I Oiled the Threaded Rod
Nah, slides right in. I think I might have seen some Lisle branded stuff on amazon when looking for the Jim’s stuff
How is the clearance between the buddy pegs and the rear fender with a passenger/ over bumps?
hey bro iv just fitted saddle bags on a fat boy 2017 for a friend with rear foot pads but the low cater pin is out due to the bracket for the bags on the exhaust side do you have to grind the frame part back for it to recess back ?
Great videos! What are my options on passenger pegs? 2018 softtail deluxe with v&h shortshots. Is there some type of extension bracket to get around the exhaust?
I've been looking for pass pegs for my 2020 low rider s, and it looks like there is. Its a passenger peg bracket kit (i think).
Does the grease fitting on 2010 FLHTK neck grease the bearings?
how often do you lube or replace not bearings on a sportster?
I have a 2008 cross bones. Just got it. Trying to remove passenger pegs. They're what seems to be screwed on swing arm. When I lossen them the whole peg/mount just spins. Do you know if there is a bolt going threw the swing arm that the peg screws onto? Appreciate any help.
are the neck brgs same size/same brg as the wheel brgs or swing arm brgs on the shovels?
so how do we adjust the bearing load on the turning of the triple clamp ??? ...
