Finally someone who teaches you how to cross torp DD! This video deserves thumps up just with that guide alone. Nicely done video iChase. Great replay too.
I just got my first CV the Hosho, and couldn't find an instructional video worth a flip. this video is great, I can't wait to check out Captain's Academy 21 & 23. I'm going to delve a lot deeper into your videos for improving my gameplay on the other lines as well. Thank you very much!
That was quite the end. I especially liked that enemy guy's comment that the CV should have rammed... Said a lot about his knowledge of CVs. Once a CV is in motion, it doesn't easily change said motion, unless it is low tier (Ryujo is probably the last CV to handle reasonably well). Oh, and glorious comment about aerial... He must have been pretty embarrassed afterwards. :D
I know you have not done these tutorials in a long while. But I thank you for all of them. Trying to learn to play DD's of several lines and CV's. So your tutorials I find easy to understand. English is difficult to write and interpret. but you make it very rewarding. Thank you again, Mr. IChase. (sorry I am Japanese speaker but read and write English almost adequately lol). You are very good sensei.
Hi Chase, I think you forgot to mention about the friendly fire when strafing, especially when you have allied planes in the strafe box. In case you already pointed that out and I might have missed it, sorry in advance. =) Great video, darn it I'm not using the stacking. Thanks for the very useful tips!
Very true, learned that the hard way when the game was released. I will still strafe even if allied planes are in combat if they are going to lose anyways (one or two planes left). Sucks to kill those planes, but at least they are locking down the enemy for the strafe.
i deal the same to bust 28 plane once. but ma allied did not see it on other side. but the ennemy did like it too rolf.4 squad of americain figther and get 4 dive bomber.
I've been playing CV for a week now and what a jump it is from Tier 5 to Tier 6. My first battle with my Ryujo was in Co-Op so I can practice the Manual Drops and it is a steep learning curve for me as a new CV player. This video was very helpful and really changed my playstyle so thank you iChase :D
Been rewatching these. Really never wanted to CV. But now am going to give it a try. Hope I learn as much as I can before I go into PvP with them and your tutorials are the best.
Wow that was probably the closest game I've seen in a long while, not to mention it's the type where the carrier's final micro-controls directly determined the outcome. Honestly, I have never thought that rank CV play would get this intense.
very useful, thank you. I never do really well in CVs, and in theory I knew most of the points you mention, but this really helped in fleshing them out for me.
For???? what Tire??? what about Lower Tire Carriers, that dont have Manual Control??? well this is a waste of time #1 you dont get Replies Back, #2 just Search for a Better RUclipsr Guide, cuz Here You will not get Answers to your Questions...
I chose to play with american CVs, and it was quite useful to learn the basics so I could improve my skills when I finally went after the IJN's CVs. My favorite moment was in the Independence, in Ranked Battles, where these stages you mentioned made all the difference. I kept a DD spoted so my team could kill it, and while I was doing that, I used islands to cover my run to the enemy point and capped it right before they won on points, turning the tides for my team.
A couple helpful hints: 1- You notice how when you manual drop, the torpedo bombers fly a bit inside the rectangle after dropping the torpedoes, before turning around and returning to base? If you queue up an action after the manual drop, say the return action or a simple movement node, they will turn around as soon as they reach the rectangle and the torpedoes are out. This little time you save from being inside the enemy AA circle may or may not be helpful at all, but it's there; 2- If you strafe fighters that are coming towards your fighters, you'll usually shoot down 1 or 2 planes and then they will get behind your fighters and deal damage while taking none for the entire strafe duration, and usually after yours are done with the strafe you'll lose the engagement that happens afterward, unless you hit them with the end of the strafe which would look so obvious it'd be pretty easy to avoid
+iChaseGaming as if you ran into Femennenly. i'm familiar with her twitch channel from when i was trying to learn CV play as well as yourself. she is one of the top CV players on the NA servers and has made rank 1 in ranked with CV play only. Well done on the smarting her at the end.
Always a challenge when there's a CV in ranked. Especially when it's driven by good players. I can't just smoke cover the fleet to block LoS from the front but have to smoke with my allies in it or that they can move into it. It was fun having you, fem or both of you in matches. Fun, but very challenging.
Well, as many people said below, there's a fine text in this video, stating to wait until Wargaming balances CV's and AA Guns, but eh; it's still useful; nice video
Yes, I missed the ram on this, sorry, as a person that ONLY plays CVs, not particularly good at them ;) I was live streaming this one at the time, and from memory I was laughing my head off at the time. Unfortunately I don't believe that ranked is a proper scenario to showcase CV play as the tactics used vary greatly to those used in standard play. You have to remember, in ranked format CV's play is very different to randoms. You're playing a more of a support role than an offensive role. Also your team often determines your fate as a CV player in ranked. I was yelling at my team the last bit begging them to come to me for my DF - they wouldn't.
That was a pretty epic battle and an informative video. I have seen that other CV player and she is really good also. I would say you and Fem are probably among the top 5 CV players in the game.
Regarding the cross-dropping on DDs...I am definitely in the "anticipatory" camp, but I had a cv captain use that against me at the end of a match the other day. I was in a Fubuki (and yes, they are sluggish), and the cv actually faked a drop to get me to turn & cut speed, then came in with the second squadron and nailed me before I could re-accelerate. I don't think I'd ever seen that move before, and it really impressed me. Also, when it comes to manual divebomber drops on DDs...I find that I can generally dodge everything by waiting until they pop up and then turning hard to either side. The auto-drop might actually be better against an actively dodging destroyer simply because it covers more area.
Nice timing Chase! I just woke up and I tought to myself: Ichase should make a video on how to carrier... I'm starting up my pfone and what do I see? "IChaseGaming uploaded a video: Captain's academy- how to carrier (CV). Such perfect timing!
I think when stacking torpedo bombers you should offset one a bit to the side so that within the box there's a smaller average distance between torpedoes, which means in general more torpedoes will hit instead of the enemy slipping through the gaps
One of the other major choices for a CV driver is whether to attempt to sink the enemy CV or not. It is a huge investment of resources and time. On equal tiers takes ~2 or maybe 3 full strikes to sink. As the enemy CV is usually far back each of those CV attacks takes longer to cycle. So you are trading ~4 - 6 strikes on front line ships. It also increases the chances of your planes being shot up be AA. Now if you do sink their CV their planes are out of action and its a big shift in points. Usually I don't do it but sometimes it can work. A big factor will be whether the enemy has defending ships, especially high AA ships, near their CV(s).
Awesome play! Hope one day we could choose the armament bombers load. Dive bombers can load HE or AP. Each torp bomber can load one big torp or two small torps. Also hope CV could have a squad of scout planes.
1st Game with Carrier (Hosho) No clue what I was doing and kinda disoriented by the overhead view it gives you as opposed to the other warships I've been playing. Should have read up on it first or did a Co-op game, but I was too excited so jumped right into the real action with a PVP game. Quickly Discovered the clicking on an enemy ship will send your bombers to attack it (Didn't know anything about manual bombing yet) and clicked on stationary enemy carrier with all 3 squadrons highlighted. Not only did the torpedoes hit the carrier but also an enemy destroyer that was racing by and both sunk (Carrier was already badly damaged)
19:20 my problem always trying to toro DDs with IJN CV. It's gotten to the point where as USN I toro DDs and IJN I bomb them just because they are easier to manipulate and hit.
I would like to see a video on how to avoid/mitigate CV manual Torpedo drops. It would be awesome to see a short video tutorial on how to avoid them. The video would probably have to be done in the training room with a friend though. The reason being is because I would like to see the various ways CV captains set up their TB run ins: from anvil attacks to stacking them, etc.
"I Have a dream... that one day... USN CV will get the love we need... a strike load out with a fighter squad...at all tier... THIS IS MY DREAM! HEAR MY CRIES WARGAMING!!!"
Navi I don't know what CV you are playing but IJN currently has massive advantage over USN CV especially in high tier. Look at the CV winrates at Warshiptoday.com...
Chase you know the part of how you explained that lock trap? Well I'm in a Colorado and there is a enemy carrier who tries to do it and I notice the 2 torp squadrons lining up to use that trick, I end making a slight turn to the left where the torps are coming from after the squadrons turned and left and I almost got hit by all of the torps but none of them hit me and I was able to DODGE THEM ALL! No joke I literally did this like 10 minutes before I posted this comment
Your Captain's Academy (and the channel in general) series is fantastic iChase. Actually the kind of RUclips content I would consider paying some money for and I'm a pretty poor person. A lot of youtubers go the lazy way from different reasons to just show game play in different forms because usually that's enough if it's entertaining to a certain fan base to sustain a channel. And in more often than not you get more views and subs that way. Your not one of those. You put your expertise on a game in these. Extremely useful content to audience that want to "git gud" :D. Few months ago I got back to WoWs, after almost a year break when I discovered WG had finally fixed the peculiar sound bug which made the game unplayable on some very common motherboard integrated sound devices. I could have just bought a sound card but I didn't want to do it since I found it mind boggling that a rich and big studio like WG couldn't fix a basic bug like that. But I love the game itself so I came back to it after they fixed it. Found your channel to be one of the best WoWs -channels. You sir are a true community contributor. Keep up the good work young man.
Hello I Chase thanks for your effort to explain game mechanincs. I would like to know how do I return to my ship from the tactical map. There are a few situation in which I need to go back to the first person view, but cant find the right bottom on the keyboard.
What do you think about using the accompany ability to put cap over a high value target (like a BB). You lose the use of the fighter squadron but you give that target additional support.
Just one question... with the Torpedobombers, how to Drop the Torpedos the way you did? Like a triangle with the smal Peak in the enemys direction? (Not the normal autodrop-spread) I just can manual-drop Like a rectangle
Well... learned another bit. Dive bombers empty fly faster so make better scouts. Did not know that. I do use a dive squadron for early scouting and this will help with that.
You know, in a lot of ways, playing a CV is like being the King in chess. You need to be protected during most of the game, but in the endgame, even you, the weakest piece on the board, can decide the winner and the loser.
Nice video. I haven't played CV in over half a year, even in Coop. Sure would be nice if WG was able to bring back my enjoyment of CV play with future updates.
All these points you raised are extremelly important in the order you said them but like you said, the ship positioning is extremelly important, a CV can cap and MUST cap if possible, because opposite to other ships, in late games where are more than 4 caps, simply a ship can't cap if that ship could be engaging another enemy, their firepower would be wasted whereas a carrier can sit in cap undetected and still proyect their firepowere where it is needed. I would love to point out typical mistakes done in CV play like for example sniping mid-game, attacking lone ships and just striking with everything and not having eyes on the enemy fleet. And there is also the problem USN carriers play a bit differently, you relly more on dive bombers but torpedo bombers can be as effective even when looking for DDs.
Chase, what should i do when i get panic when playing cv? I mean, for example, i play a hosho. when i try to drop torpedoes with TB, i still have to keep an eye on my fighters because they can be easily taken out by langley's fighters.
Hey ichase and viewers, I've been having problems with the controls of the CV. How do I view my planes from third person and not the top down view? And with recent patches, did they remove manual drop or am having problems with the controls?
And also, any recommendations on choosing loadouts for American CVs? 012 is really good for dealing damage but a lot of times it sucks too because you can't do a damn thing when enemy fighters engage your planes...
good guide i played wow back in beta n started playjng again a couple weekends ago i knew most of what you talk about but also learned a few things thanks for that....a great guide well made and thaught off and your rank battle replay his cool nailbitter ending...your the hero in that one thank god otherwise your ole team be putting you down even tho you played very welll....the life of a cv captain....too bad you cant courtmarshal all those potty mouth in chat like a real admiral uh...😁
2017 here. Haven't played for awhile and when I started my first game as a carrier. I can't manual drop. I pressed alt so violently because I was so pissed it no longer worked. What happened? did WoWS remove manual dropping?
I don't think CV are unplayable; the problem is they are really powerful and so usually the team with the weak CV player lose 90% of the time. This desn't apply to any other class as usually there are like 4/5 BB 3/4 cruiser and a bunch of DDs. So let's say that 1 BB is not so strong..this may be compensated by the other BB players. And so for the other classes. Perhaps only DD have the same influence in the game.
just got my first carrier, but the button to aim the torps isn't alt? the only way I can drop torps is to click on the ship with the bombers and there is only one spot I can drop them.
Chase, what CV tree do you recommend for complete novices? I probably won't do anything about until the RN CVs get announced, but it's always good to get into practice. :)
EsquireRu I think IJN carriers carry more planes, as a bottom line. Say you have a Lexington (USN Tier VIII CV), that will only be able to carry a loadout of 1/2/2 - or any combination of that; by comparison, the Shokaku (IJN Tier VIII CV) can have a 2/2/2 loadout. I think. TL;DR: Japanese CVs carry more aircraft. E: Chase can probably clarify a bit better than me.
Hey Chase, how do I handle enemy carriers with fighter setups? I have been using the bomber setup on my Ryujo and almost every single enemy carrier I have run into used the fighter setup.
Noht Mark Use your teams AA to your advantage, try to draw the enemy fighters over friendly AA, if you see the enemies fighters are on one side of the map, try to strike on the other side. If you see the enemy CV sending attack aircraft in for a attack on one of your allies, noes your time to attack while the enemy CV is distracted. Hope this helps.
For beginners I'd advice one thing that Chase never mentioned: balanced setups (stock ones). They allow you to learn bomber mechanics, while still having some AA capabilities to cover your bombers.
Hey Chase, can u do more vids for your "Climbing the Ranks" series? Maybe a vid on the best ships for ranks 15-1, i.e, tier VIII best ships for Ranked. Maybe more map strategies? Tips? etc?
The match at the end; what a masterclass when even the opposing is giving you props and saying they didn't anticipate your move. Well done video.
It's funny you explained cross-dropping with USN planes, as the USN is the faction that cannot do this. Great vid man, keep it up
Finally someone who teaches you how to cross torp DD! This video deserves thumps up just with that guide alone. Nicely done video iChase. Great replay too.

that was probably the craziest ending I've seen in WOWs lol. Well played!
Never had the chance to see a one on one between CVs. Nice video.

very useful, thank you. I never do really well in CVs, and in theory I knew most of the points you mention, but this really helped in fleshing them out for me.
Instead of using the auto bomb to reposition what you can do is use a shift to queue up a manual way point before bombing.
For???? what Tire??? what about Lower Tire Carriers, that dont have Manual Control??? well this is a waste of time #1 you dont get Replies Back, #2 just Search for a Better RUclipsr Guide, cuz Here You will not get Answers to your Questions...

I have been waiting for this updated vid! Yay!
Excellent stuff, iChase. Good job.
You got really lucky to get flooding on the bismark at the end. Great video keep make awesome stuff
Dam, I gonna miss this way of playing carrier
Thanks for the tips and tactics ..very much helpful ..especially with the torpedo drops.
I miss these cvs 🥺
wow i watched this at 1:10am and now i can't sleep because it was so interesting.
Super play at 31:23 wow that was an outstanding idea
+iChaseGaming as if you ran into Femennenly. i'm familiar with her twitch channel from when i was trying to learn CV play as well as yourself. she is one of the top CV players on the NA servers and has made rank 1 in ranked with CV play only.

Just a shame you can't manual drop until tier 6
Hamburger thank god, at least on one platform there’s an enjoyable cv play-style
CaptainMcSplash it’s not the same thing without my waifus Taiho and Essex
I am very new to aircraft carriers and have one question why do you have to bring your planes back is it for more ammo? Fuel?
I would like to see a video on how to avoid/mitigate CV manual Torpedo drops. It would be awesome to see a short video tutorial on how to avoid them. calpoly12000 if the drop is good you will take damage if not then they need to patch and fix it so you take damage
Rule 5: no matter how well you play a cv, you will get blamed by everyone who is losing their 1v1s or can't hit their targets if your team loses
I've been waiting for this day
Nice vid bro, I found this very useful :D
Congrads on 50k mon ami.
CV master you are.
When iChase says 'here you' it sounds like 'Hiryu' so I'm forced to laugh at the most unintentional of puns.
Great teacher. Reserved nothing. My respect and salute!
"I Have a dream... that one day... USN CV will get the love we need... a strike load out with a fighter squad...at all tier... THIS IS MY DREAM! HEAR MY CRIES WARGAMING!!!"
Juggernaut So you want the IJNs CVs Even more helpless against the USNs CVs?
Navi I don't know what CV you are playing but IJN currently has massive advantage over USN CV especially in high tier. Look at the CV winrates at Warshiptoday.com...
If you think IJN CV are worse than USN then you are either a low tier player or doing something VERY WRONG
you ll have one, with Essex :)
Loli [-ODM-] Im still at the Lady Lex

Great and helpfull video thx ichase !

I think I'll stick with my cruisers, battleship and destroyers.... Those are playable for a noob like me.... Nice video as always.
Thanks iChase !
Will you update this video?
Ok, i have a proble, when I play with my langley and i press the alt key to manually drop bombs and torpedos it doesn't work it won't let me aim
Chase, what should i do when i get panic when playing cv? I mean, for example, i play a hosho. when i try to drop torpedoes with TB, i still have to keep an eye on my fighters because they can be easily taken out by langley's fighters.
Hi iChase!
I have a question for you. Which would you prefer the American or Japanese carriers? Thanks!
+ichasegaming can you do a review for the arp haguro tier 7 cruiser. I want to know whether im running mine correctly
I just found out where your intro music came from.
Ross Bugden - Ascension
How do I select the main guns of the ship?
do low tier carriers like langley have the ability to strafe?
I'm in a Hosho my bombers keep getting decemated what should i do
2017 here. Haven't played for awhile and when I started my first game as a carrier. I can't manual drop. I pressed alt so violently because I was so pissed it no longer worked. What happened? did WoWS remove manual dropping?
1. You wait for patch that makes CVs playable
Vladimir VojtaML highly underliked comment
yeah i have a zuiho and if I play against a bogue he just shots everything down with his 2 squadrons of fighters and its game over for me
I don't think CV are unplayable; the problem is they are really powerful and so usually the team with the weak CV player lose 90% of the time. This desn't apply to any other class as usually there are like 4/5 BB 3/4 cruiser and a bunch of DDs. So let's say that 1 BB is not so strong..this may be compensated by the other BB players. And so for the other classes. Perhaps only DD have the same influence in the game.
I guess they gave you that patch
Hi IChase,
Can you make a video of how to hit BB's Citadels? Thanks.
just got my first carrier, but the button to aim the torps isn't alt? the only way I can drop torps is to click on the ship with the bombers and there is only one spot I can drop them.
Manual drops were removed from Tier 4 and 5 cvs, you'll get manual drops once you hit tier 6
what dos left click and drag do
what captain skills should I have for the Iowa?
Hey iChase!
There's rumors going around that USN CVs are about to get a rework, no date set. How would you feel if the rumors become true?
I wish it is true :) but there's hoping and then there's WG ;)
Fight or Flight Gaming- PayDay 2, Roblox, and More! Plot twist they only rework the IjN line lol
Outwardpanicjoe Fun fact. iChase released a video a while back about them confirming a rework. :D
Chase, what CV tree do you recommend for complete novices?
I probably won't do anything about until the RN CVs get announced, but it's always good to get into practice. :)
IJN CVs, USN CVs are just terrible right now
iChaseGaming Ok, thanks!
what's the difference exactly?
EsquireRu I think IJN carriers carry more planes, as a bottom line.
Say you have a Lexington (USN Tier VIII CV), that will only be able to carry a loadout of 1/2/2 - or any combination of that; by comparison, the Shokaku (IJN Tier VIII CV) can have a 2/2/2 loadout.
I think.
TL;DR: Japanese CVs carry more aircraft.
E: Chase can probably clarify a bit better than me.
IJN CV's have more aircraft squadrons but less planes per squadron.
Tips? etc?
next captain's Academy: how to US CVs please. It's extremelly frustrating for me to play it at the moment
what about low tier Americans with 1 torp how do i deal with dd
So aircraft carrier captains basically spend all of their time on the map?
Ohhh! So that's how to stack bombers. I always struggle with that
