For that reason I very often run ahead of the main force to seed torpedoes into a control area, so that my team has time to get there before the enemy can capture it. Or run along the side or back wall and use torps to force enemy stragglers back into my team's fire zones. If it works, the team gets more damage and control of a capture point; if not then maybe I get some torpedo hits and even sink an enemy or two.
The last point, that it's easier to torp things sailing towards you than away from you, is why when I play torpedo-focused DDs, I tend to go to whichever of my team's flanks that is weaker. That flank is more likely to be one where the enemies push and serve opportunities for torping.
As someone who is trying to get into the fine art of torpedoing, I approve of this message. I had hoped, though, it would have something on close-range torpedo assaults, where you charge to point blank range and fire a volley of doom. On how to not only hit with the torpedoes but also how to get to that range without getting sunk on the way. With low-to-mid tier Russian destroyers, you pretty much have to do that or go gunboat.
another helpful hint: when torping a bb or something, you generally want to not fire you guns, or else it will alert the BBs where you are and will most likely take precautionary measures to avoid possible torps.
excellent point, thank you that makes alot of sense, I love all these tips from everyone, I'm trying to figure this torpedo thing out and become efficient in Destroyer/cruiser, couple dozen battles so far but I think I found a fun game in this world of warships.
NOW THAT IS VERY USEFUL FOR ME . I am always trying to shoot torp ram get some darn damage in there some way.. I think because a lot of the players that I have been (laughingly)paired with are not Initially aggressive and ! find myself upset cause at the 5min left mark the team I am on is playing 200 point catch up and the opposite team is starting to head for open sea to wait us out or pick us off. and I have a count sheet where I cataloged 15 straight instances where that happened to me in a row.
Wow. I only have 10 hours played so far and maybe 5 battles with Destroyers and I knew basically nothing lol. I had no clue what that white line was or that I could change to a narrower torpedo wall. Thanks for this video, it helps so much!
I love firing at targets beyond my range that are sailing into my range. Especially if it was just barely around an island. Sometimes those torpedoes end up hitting something faster that was trying to slip around that island :)
Thank you. You said ONE thing that no one else did that I couldn't figure out. You need to LOCK ON to the target to get the lead indicator. I couldn't find that anywhere. Thanks!
This has been the video i have been waiting for all the years! Thumbs up! Few more tips you missed: 1. Pay attention of obstacles in torpedoes path, islands, shipwrecks, friendly ships. Lead indicator does not compensate for these. 2. Without lead indication you can easily torp into smoke where you see enemy gun flashes, into narrow straights and in cap where you can see 90% cap point's but still don't detect that enemy DD that contests you. 3. It is very difficult to torp-kill ships that are comming straight at you. Leave your smoke and try to get away or go for a side-shot. Firing at ships coming straight at you you will hit only one torp from each of you sets even when using tight spread. 4. When people are turning away from you, yes one should lead more but when you expect they will start turning around you should aim at lead indicator or just behind it.
wow,, I put the lesson to good use, Found my average went from 1 hit per salvo to 3 hits per salvo. This was the answer I was needing to know. I love sailing the Chung Mu and now I am enjoying it much more. Thanks for the training!!
I've been a shima god for a long time, but I stopped playing for nearly a year. When I came back, I found I couldn't torp shit. So I remembered this vid and begrudgingly rewatched it. Now I'm nailing peeps once again.So... good vid AND it stands the test of time.
THANK YOU!!! finally - someone explains what the white predictive bar is. I visually never noticed it and was rather bad at guessing the lead for the torp run.
Helpful Hint: If your launch your salvo of torps and the bb turns broadside(meaning torps will fall short), you can open up fire on the bb and the bb will usually turn in toward you, which will set him right into your torps!
You forgot the first, second and third rule of Torpedo Club: "Never, ever, ever, ever. Ever. Fire your torpedoes ahead of a friendly ship." Oh, and if you're mentioning your last point, you should also mention the opposite and to not bother firing torps at a ship at range moving away from you cos they just wont reach.
That happens a lot, more than I care to count. I've lost many a battleship because a friendly DD decided to fire torps ahead of me thinking that I was to slow to catch up. It's why once my brother started to play a few weeks ago, I told him that if he drops torps to say something in the chat especially if a friendly might be nearby.
Love your videos, man, but I'm not sure how effective it is to explain basic torpedo strategies using high-tier ships as an example. Most DD (and cruiser) captains are going to have figured this stuff out by the time they get into tier VIII boats; it might have been better to use a low tier DD and work through ambushes and using smoke in your attacks as well as torpedo walls.
Harv72b you'be surprised at the number of high tier DDs that don't get this >.< although i should have gone over ambushing ships around islands. Was getting late and slipped my mind
And this vid is still relevant even now, 3 years later, after Fubuki has been down-tiered to tier 6. I'm actually glad you did use Fubuki for the tutorial, because she's exactly what I normally run and I was finding I missed way more than I hit. Turns out I haven't been using the predictor line properly. Thanks, iChase!
Hi iChase, I enjoy your academy Videos a lot. Thank You for sharing your knowledge in this great Format. Accesable, entertaining and to the Point. Cheers, Tobias

Good video , i just accidentally received a destroyer ( didn't pay attention and went next level ship) so i was in battle and had no clue how to use torpedoes but now i do thx again and keep up the good work
Thanks for the video, I am a noob and haven't been able to get the torps right as yet. Great explanation of the basic principles. I will definitely give this a go!
I like how good torpedo play is not about RNG but a mind game instead. Anticipating the enemy move, which gap is he gonna cross, is he tunnel-visioned on another target, is he expecting me at all behind this island, etc. :)
This is the best video for me right now. I can play CVs rather mediocre, BBs well, and CAs above average but for the life of me I can’t play DDs aside from the Soviet gunboats due to my pathetic ability to stealth torp. At best I can suicide charge a Nelson in my Minekaze and land all torps but obviously the Nelson loved due to no follow up torps. It just takes a really good amount of map awareness imo. And I’ve been staying at tier V trying to get better but really struggle. I do have respect for torping DD players because I can’t do it as of now.
Good video, only thing I think should've been brought up is the usage of torps on a battleship where range is almost non existent and their speed tends to be extremely slow with pretty awkward angles to shoot from
What a great video. I was looking for a video that explained the principles and controls for us rookies. I skipped past the destroyers pretty quick and went straight to the St. Louis and Charleston cruisers. But, after being sunk a few times with torpedoes, I wanted to go back and understand destroyer tactics a lot better. Greatly appreciated but I am still a little fuzzy on how to predict the time it will take to get to the target. Could you clarify at least some starting point reference for a cruiser vs a destroyer or battleship?
IChase thank you so much these lessons are great. Coming from the worst WoW player ever. I have learned so much now its just a matter of time tell my plans for world domination reach fruition. Ok now back to reality (which I hate). I have watched all these lessons several times and each time pick up a little more, So thank you so much for the wonderful content and fun commentary.
when u fire your torps how do u do that camera thing when u hover above the torps and watch their progress. Btw a twitch stream named Crysantos recommended you and you have already given me some powerful and correct advice so just a quick little thanks and keep up the good work your vids are very in depth and informative. :)
Something had me befuddled here. I have a very bad spatial sense and have a hard enough time wrapping my head around these things, but I think I've spotted the source of the confusion. 7:18 - Blue line. If the target ran a course more or less square to yours before your fired - or rather, to the _torpedoe's_ course - it is losing some of the 'from-left-to-right' component of its motion vector as soon as it turns _to either direction._ So from the POV of the torpedo boat, this 'looks' as if the target was slowing down. So to increase hit probability for _both_ cases, you have to aim 'in front' of the predictor bar. 8:59 In the second graphic with the red line, the enemy ship _isn't turning out_ at all. It is _turning in,_ just as the one on the blue line before _(into_ the torpedoes.) The _crucial_ difference is that this time, the previous course before dodging had been _oblique_ to the torpedo (boat's) course. It's basically trying to 'head off' the torps. The course change makes it run at right angles, it _increases_ the 'left-to-right' vector component. Relative to the torpedo boat, it seems to 'speed up'. And _that's_ why you need to aim ahead of it.
My biggest problem with torpedoes is this. I select a target. I take note of whether he is maneuvering and/or changing speed. He is not so I fire once at the white line and another slightly behind it. The second my torpedoes enter the water they turn leaving me to look like a COMPLETE idiot as my torpedoes go wide. It's so frustrating. I understand the basics. I understand that you have to not aim at the white line if the target is moving, BUT MY GOD. It feels like they're is a cheat mod out there spots torpedoes the second they enter the water because most of my targets are sailing in straight lines as I watch them and get into position, but the second I fire IMMEDIATE change in direction and speed and the torpedoes are still 5-6km out. Granted I understand that if the target isn't engaged with friendly ships, but it's alone then yeah...probably he is getting spotted by me and will start taking precautions, but again most of my targets are getting spotted by the rest of the team and they still act dumb at first, but then immediate change a second after I fire. Can anyone help me out here? Is it just bad luck or should I have not ask for help to begin with because I'll I'm going to get in replies is that I'm a dumb noob that needs to "git good?"
launch right after the target turns. They could be angling against enemy fire or just random change to avoid unseen torps. Right after a turn they are more likely to keep that course long enough for your torps to get there.
Priority target. If something is targeting me and I cant see what it is, I assume its a DD. The moment I see the target indicator disappear I will take evasive action. most DD players arent going to just keep you targeted and watch. So that target indicator dropping is a tell tale sign torps are in the water.
Chase in the video picks opportunities where the reads are much easier, like the Scharnhorst being pinned against the island and the New Orleans hindering the Tirpitz, I think finding and picking these moments is what separates good torpboat from bad torpboat.
@@childdecimator47 Not a lot of team play at lower tiers. I concentrate on defending the battleships, air craft carriers, and cruisers low on life and in a pickle without even firing a shot just using smoke and ferreting out the enemy for my team mates. It may not be appreciated as much as you would like but as you go up the tiers, team players are highly thought of.
very thanks chase, i have the fubuki, im enjoying playing it, but never knew about that leading white stripe, i mean i saw it and i thought meh thats some straight shoot, nothin related to some lead predictible launch. Thanks again
I have a 18 skill fubuki with avg damage of over 60k by torps in SEA. I use the 15km with boost set that gives me 12km effective range, my suggestion would be never try to chase torps because even with a sluggish 20knots BB you will still need to get within 7km to land those torps and by the time they reach it would be a very wide spread and since the torps are coming from behind the reaction time is much longer and it is easier to avoid massive damage if your target had a few more seconds. ALWAYS drop the torps in front of the target so that instead your torps had to chase the enemy, it is the enemy running INTO the wall.
Was pretty bothered by how many torpedos seemed to trap me in place and kill me online. Watched this guide to get progress in the destroyer ship line to better understand how it was done so I could avoid it. Immediately immobilized an enemy, they popped damage control, immobilized them again, and torpedoed them violently
Your last example (ship chasing you) does not apply only to Japanese ships, mid and high tier US destroyers are able to use similar tactics, also Campbeltown, Bliskawica and the infamous sealclubber Murmansk.
I constantly over estimate the abilities of enemy battleships. I take precautions to estimate turning and speed changes while it just ends up, they sail in a straight line and never move at all. Missing most of my torpedoes
I have too often my torps are spreading that an enemy ship can slip through the wide part of the torpedoes. But when I face torpedoes (and too lazy to change speed or whatever) I have a hard time dodging them all. RNG love me please.
Hi Chase! Thanks very much for your videos. I have a question though. I'm about 5K exp away with my Hatsuharu from getting a Fubuki. Since the new IJN DD line is announced and should be implemented in the near future, I would like to get your opinion if I should go ahead and get the Fubuki or wait until the IJN DD line is revised? Thanks!
You can keep going, they'll just replace whichever ship u have with the new one. Maybe accumulate experience, because I'm not sure u get the exp back for modules ._.
Well I not doing well with torps cause I'm still trying to grind a few ships in the lower tiers that have low torp count and frustratingly long reload times. That combined with my deminishing patience is slowing my progress ALOT lol. But I keep watching vids like these and continue to march onward.
Chase: You need to build a wall of torpedoes and predict what the enemy is going to do Me, who gets under 2 km from the enemy ship and then sends torpedoes everywhere around him: i dont think so pal
Charles Courtwright More damage than citadel? no, they do about same damage, sometime less Bane for CV and BB? no, IJN torpedo spotted from otherside of moon and no range, no one play USN DD torpedo boat, Ruskie torpedo slow and no range. In the world everyone got radar, sonar, SA, even noob can dodge torpedo. Next patch, IJN torpedo tube will had chance of explode everytime damage taken.
Charles Courtwright Top tier? so call 20k base damage is only on Kagero or Yugumo in future patch and Shimakaze, the range/speed, had to compromised one of them. Also, those torpedo were spotted from other side of the moon, combine with vigilance which spotted from otherside of the sun, with sonar spotted from end of our solar system, with aircraft you are destroyed. These were torpedo with huge neon sign attachment saying "this is a torpedo, dodge me please" combine with super loud speaker boardcasing whats on the neon sign. Torpedo damage reduction is also a thing, no torpedo do full damage, even aganist DD There are player who install wasd_hax.exe, expect no hit. Against noob, more than 2 torpedo hit is called success, good attack, anything more than that is called enemy had temporary connection problem. 8 torpedo/salvo with stupid long reload, not much a thread. 15 torpedo/salvo with even more stupid long reload, workable, but whats the point when they not going to hit anything. Just go burn stuff down, less effort more reward. Current IJN DD torpedo is just pure garbage other than the highest base damage item in the game. IJN CA cannot used torpedo effectively even CQC due to limited launch angle, but their gun are good enough and getting into 10km range is not what a IJN CA should do. CV torpedo is still what they are but AA destroy aircraft like fly drooping out of the sky.
This was very helpful! However, I wish it was about shooting from submarines! I've been unable to find anything SPECIFIC that explains the keys and their meaning. It's very disappointing that World of Warships doesn't have more details and/or training/practice rooms! Still searching for help!
I've got the Shima, I've been trying out the various torp types, can I ask which you prefer? I thought I liked the second set, but I've gone back to the long range first set recently and cannot decide
That cute penguin at the end...awww....BTW I have a really good match with my Fletcher which haven't unlock her torps and I surprised a lot of my enemies with them, especially 2 DDs which got nuked inside their smoke, so slow torps with low detection is actually better than those faster?
Do these same principles work with cruisers with torpedoes? Just wondering and thanks for the great video....any other helpful hints would be appreciated.
Turning in any direction will slow them down. You need to aim ahead due to increased distance, not because a turn away from you magically increases their speed. It's distance and travel time.
I once got a torp kill in the Omaha, which resulted in me taking outa tier 6 enemy cruiser but died in the process, I saw him beached and didn't waste the opportunity
Wow...! I'm a new player to Android app. World of Warships! that was an amazing torpedo wall on the German tier 10! I'm still playing at tier 5 still learning. I know this videos old but. that is awesome! I'm aware you're on the PC. have you played the app version? if you got back from you that would be awesome I'd love to learn more.
THATS all ok but how you make wall,my torps never go like that, ussuly they go 2 by 2 and big empty space betwene them,do you just move mouse leftr or right or you press some button
Hi Chase. Thank you for this video. May I ask your opinion about something? Now with test server up for 5.12, what do you think about the nerfs. For me, I think it is going to be the end of High tier battleships. Maybe just German ones joining in. And good night
iChaseGaming Thank you, chase. And, if I am allowed another question, do you have any ideea how can we put more pressure on the developers(since forums do not always work properly)
To iChaseGaming ( or someone in the know ) ....... you mentioned in one of your replies about a training room, am wondering where it might be and could you point us in the right direction to find it, enjoy your vid too ........
Yes the area denial, is important. Call it spam, but 1 dd can turn a fleet with a few spreads of torps. Good video, but again please stop giving away the fact the BB's actually do have Rudders! 1/2 the bb driver have not learned yet. jk.
I run bb and destroyer but I have been ran over while in a BB by friendly BBs because they use autopilot, but me I make destroyers and carriers with torp bombers work for it speak of last night I was using the Alabama it took 3 destroyers and 2 carriers to hit me with torpedoes after 3mins of trolling the carriers, sunk one carriers and 2 of the destroyers the other destroyer went kamikaze on me and dropped everything on my port side they
I'm 7 years late into this game, but I still found your guide helpful. Thanks for the video
The other fun one is - you can either eat my torpedo wall or turn broadside to my friend the battleship.
Neil Harbott yup, it's not always about doing damage, a lot of times it's to deny areas or turn enemy ships into places they don't want to turn
I rather take broadside from BB than go against torps.
RNG can do wonders.
@@AlexSDU seriously, I'll take the potential of taking high damage to guaranteed high damage all day.

My battleships in my port hates you Chase.
sounds fine to me. BBs needs nerf anyways
After seeing some battles ending with only DDs on one side and only BBs on the other side, nerfing BBs is probably not a good solution.
thomas coquoz you're welcome :D

You can also hold 'H' to show the ship information.
god, shima torps sky view is soo beautiful
Thank you very much for this great guide!
Nice video...very clear and well explained. Thanks very much.
Right after a turn they are more likely to keep that course long enough for your torps to get there.
my problem with torpedoes are these low tier scrubs that spam torpedoes and tk me
Priority target.
Pufpuf Pacpac you're welcome :D glad ur enjoying the Fubuki
Great info as always. keep them coming.
Good intel. Maybe could have included info regarding the mini-map features to determine range and detection range.
Thank you for this video. I'm new to world of warships and this answer ed alot of questions. Great job
Insightful video for a JP DD veteran like me
Nice explanation! any vid how to 4.5 km torps??
See? That's why I always steam in straight lines with my BB. Works perfectly ;-)
I just downloaded the game and this is potentially really helpful. Thanks!
I have too often my torps are spreading that an enemy ship can slip through the wide part of the torpedoes. But when I face torpedoes (and too lazy to change speed or whatever) I have a hard time dodging them all. RNG love me please.
not sure if trolling, or....
thanks for explination of the white box and how to toggle it. just bagged 3 bot south carolinas with wickes a few minutes ago. still practicing.
bagged a destroyer and 3 cruisers with v-25! wow great tutorial thanks.
Buddy really helpful, no b s and very clear, I just hope w of w legends on the consul works roughly the same way. Thank you
Darn >_< Thanks for answering!
Well I not doing well with torps cause I'm still trying to grind a few ships in the lower tiers that have low torp count and frustratingly long reload times. That combined with my deminishing patience is slowing my progress ALOT lol. But I keep watching vids like these and continue to march onward.
I know its dumb, but I never play stealthily. I tend to play my ships like BBs. I always try to get as close as possible to a ship and torp them....
tier?
Its been 2 years i hope your a bit better than that now
So you are playing Water Tanks! Got it.
Chase: You need to build a wall of torpedoes and predict what the enemy is going to do
Me, who gets under 2 km from the enemy ship and then sends torpedoes everywhere around him: i dont think so pal
nothing like racing past a BB emergency engine power on, and screaming, you get a torpedo, you get a torpedo and you get a torpedo!
Q: How to torpedo?
A: Forget about torpedo.
torpedoes are the bane of carriers and battleships, so don't forgot about them, do more dmg to them that a citadel pen
Charles Courtwright
More damage than citadel? no, they do about same damage, sometime less
Bane for CV and BB? no, IJN torpedo spotted from otherside of moon and no range, no one play USN DD torpedo boat, Ruskie torpedo slow and no range.
In the world everyone got radar, sonar, SA, even noob can dodge torpedo.
Next patch, IJN torpedo tube will had chance of explode everytime damage taken.
top tier torp can do 20k a hit, still nothing to laugh at
Charles Courtwright
Top tier? so call 20k base damage is only on Kagero or Yugumo in future patch and Shimakaze, the range/speed, had to compromised one of them. Torpedo damage reduction is also a thing, no torpedo do full damage, even aganist DD
There are player who install wasd_hax.exe, expect no hit.
Still actually. Thank you. It helped me a lot
good video, very in-formative
If your a fast paced cruiser / Destroyer , 1st things you need to do is get close to it as possible , Then launch your torps , Profit.
This was very helpful! However, I wish it was about shooting from submarines! I've been unable to find anything SPECIFIC that explains the keys and their meaning. It's very disappointing that World of Warships doesn't have more details and/or training/practice rooms! Still searching for help!
Thank you !
I needed this, I was missing like crazy... ;_;
Same
I've got the Shima, I've been trying out the various torp types, can I ask which you prefer? I thought I liked the second set, but I've gone back to the long range first set recently and cannot decide
That cute penguin at the end...awww....BTW I have a really good match with my Fletcher which haven't unlock her torps and I surprised a lot of my enemies with them, especially 2 DDs which got nuked inside their smoke, so slow torps with low detection is actually better than those faster?
Nice tutorial. Now it's time to see what I got right from it. :)
U sound so casual like my teacher u truly r my teacher in disguise
I have not fired a torpedo at range since Open beta
Do these same principles work with cruisers with torpedoes? Just wondering and thanks for the great video....any other helpful hints would be appreciated.
Yes though their typically in lesser quantity so you do need to be closer or use them for self defense
Phenomenal video! Learned a lot.
Great video, thank you for posting. Very helpful.
Turning in any direction will slow them down. You need to aim ahead due to increased distance, not because a turn away from you magically increases their speed. It's distance and travel time.
well he was speaking in terms of "relative to your position"
I once got a torp kill in the Omaha, which resulted in me taking outa tier 6 enemy cruiser but died in the process, I saw him beached and didn't waste the opportunity
Wow...! I'm a new player to Android app. World of Warships! that was an amazing torpedo wall on the German tier 10! I'm still playing at tier 5 still learning. I know this videos old but. that is awesome! I'm aware you're on the PC. have you played the app version? if you got back from you that would be awesome I'd love to learn more.
You need one more video
"How to Torpedobeat"
THATS all ok but how you make wall,my torps never go like that, ussuly they go 2 by 2 and big empty space betwene them,do you just move mouse leftr or right or you press some button
Ive been playing this game for less than a month and I knew about the white predictive bar
Hi Chase. Thank you for this video. May I ask your opinion about something? Now with test server up for 5.12, what do you think about the nerfs. For me, I think it is going to be the end of High tier battleships. Maybe just German ones joining in. And good night
Omega Alpha WG isn't solving the fundamental issues in the game, the bow armour reduction is just another bandaid that won't work well
iChaseGaming Thank you, chase.
1/2 the bb driver have not learned yet. jk.
I run bb and destroyer but I have been ran over while in a BB by friendly BBs because they use autopilot, but me I make destroyers and carriers with torp bombers work for it speak of last night I was using the Alabama it took 3 destroyers and 2 carriers to hit me with torpedoes after 3mins of trolling the carriers, sunk one carriers and 2 of the destroyers the other destroyer went kamikaze on me and dropped everything on my port side they
Good job that was very helpful.
Great info, thanks for sharing.
While playing Aircraft carriers... would like any tips in vectoring in aircraft to get better or more hit's
I never saw that predictive line before :0
What does the orange colour part indicate pls ?????
Great video btw thanks
On the shima only putting the green line on the white line is hard because the white line moves
