Can be useful- if the enemy knows they're spotted by a DD and they're heading for cover, switching can scare them into turning so they don't get into cover or something like that even if you don't actually have torps off CD. Also adding 1 to the priority target counter for an enemy can make them more hesitant about pushing in. Both of these are mostly for situations where the enemy knows a DD is nearby already of course (i.e. if you spotted them rather than joining an existing fight).
@@SukacitaYeremia It adds a little more skill and complexity to the game in a way that doesn't screw over DDs especially, it's a good thing. Hi, first game is a pretty lucky team setup, dream shima game. Not one carrier or one radar anywhere. Try to get a replay with many of the counters in the enemy, playing the underdog.
I agree. Currently, when I approach or enter a cap at the beginning of a game there are several enemy ships and radar galore. I'm finding that I have to basically ignore the caps and keep my distance and just play stealth game as much as possible or die via radar. Doesn't help that a lot of team cruisers and BBs now hang back so far that they cannot properly support you in a DD. I find iChase better than most (and learn a lot from him) but a lot of these types of videos are "better" case scenarios and don't apply when I play a round as a DD JMHO
Also somehow my targets are much smarter and avoid torps rather easily (WSAD anyone?), certainly I'm not getting more than 1-2 hits if that. That may be my target selection and anticipation are poor, but approach avenues are very limited with plenty radars and occassional CV.
@@szmike ditch the Shima for Halland. Its got better everything that matters.. and those European torps are insane in terms of number of hits and overall useability. People like to say their dmg is low, but they forget the super narrow spread means even at 13.5km its possible to hit 8/8 torps on a BB the size of Jeanbart. I know because ive got a devastating strike @ 13 km using Ostergotlands "weak" 90 knot torps. Basically the weakness of No smoke and higher concealment , both which are situational.. is more than offset by amazing torps, better guns and better AA.. as well as the Euro captain perks enhancing both. theres very few situations where a shima is gonna be better, unless its YOLO alpha strike. for all sane play, the euro DDs are better because of the proliferation of radars and cvs. powercreep just basically ate thd shima.
@@szmike Be mindful that if you target them with guns, than switch to torps, drop, and then back to guns, their priority target skill can precisely say when you've dropped them, if they suspect they are being targeted by a DD. Thing like getting spotted earlier in a map area, spotting while your other team-mates are probably not able due to range or cover, island coverage, and stuff like this can leave more than enough breadcrumbs for a _good_ player to have suspicion of what you might be up to. Trouble with DDs is it is easy to get in a rush mode, acting immediately on a situation, where the really good DD players set the traps themselves without loosing map awareness on where their direct intervention might be more vital if the game looks like it is going south. I'm fully aware I still make these mistakes all the time, and give way to much info to my enemies in this regard. While I am able to spot and harass for a team, giving the team more chances to win, I still struggle to get my those decisive torp strikes if I don't have the ability to farm on poor play.
DDs :capping, deny space or caps ,screen off BBs or CTs, give intel Cruisers : flank, harass ,island hopping, support BBs (hydro / radar) BBS : Tank, tank ,damage dealer, tank , deny flanks
I can appreciate everything he says in the video but having 15 long range torpedos and great concealment in a tier 10 destroyer seems uncommon. How to play a tier 5 successfully seems a lot more useful. Hopefully by tier 10 you already know what you are doing...
I’m pretty good with a tier 4 destroyer But once I got a tier 5 Destroyer I struggle I could barely hit my target with my shells and I get destroyed early because I rush in to The centre or the outside Let’s just say Beacons
The smoke at 22:30, looks like a bluff smoke. Drop a smoke, stay undetected moving away from it, and the enemy thinks there might be something in the smoke. It becomes their torpedo magnet, wasting their current loadout.
Evasion tanking was mentioned for the faster destroyers. However, nearly all DDs are capable of it. It can help your team quite a bit to attract attention if you are in a position to get away easily. Every shot the opposition wastes on you is time you buy your team to reduce the opposition health pool. In evenly matched games, this can tip the battle in your favor. It isn't hard for me to get over one million potential even in slow Asian DDs. The key is to keep an eye on the incoming fire and keep dodging. This does take a bit of practice and is better to learn on mid tiers (5-7) where ships aren't as accurate. Even firing your guns once and then stopping to go undetected again, can be a useful distraction.
Really appreciated the time and effort put into this vid, i love playing destroyers, unfortunately im not so good(yet).Found this vid to be just what i needed. Many thnx.
As someone who loves DD and is especially partial to gunboats and hybrids, the hardest lesson for me to learn is that just because you have the guns doesn't mean you *have* to use them, especially if the enemy hasn't detected you or if your trying to flee from a larger ship. Also, just because you've spotted an enemy doesn't mean they've spotted you. This is especially true if their DDs are busy elsewhere. Too many times I've spotted an enemy and immediately fired in retaliation, thinking that they knew I was there because I had spotted them.
I share your videos with my clan mates as a teaching tool, although from this video I get the sense that you and your clan mate are really not used to the DD vs CV interaction, as I see some simple mistakes being made in the second battle, and you both have what I would call a big no-no going on with your mini-maps. When I run DD, I always have air detection and AA range circles turned on in my mini-map. While it is true that CVs "can" hound a DD to death, the longer you can milk their attention, the longer they aren't doing anything to anyone else, especially the other DDs. These circles enable plays to be made where you can either avoid them seeing you, or you can manipulate dropping in and out of their vision which can mess with their aim and make them make extra passes at you , or even get less than optimal hits. As you even say in the video, the longer you stay in the game, the more impact you have, and this is no different when a CV is present, and while you are definitely the mouse to their cat, if you are clever, you can still survive.
I have just started playing WoWs this month, I'm on my 5th Day I think lol I'm currently at Tier V Kongo and VI Fubuki and tbh I was struggling as I now encounter ships up to Tier VIII, but because of your tutorials most of my matches now are wins and I'm actually becoming more useful for my team and overall a better battle performance on every match. Thank you iChase! I have been watching your videos ever since 2016, it's just that only recently have I been able and have finally decided to play the game 😊
@@gyrene_asea4133 Thank you! Tbh, you can call me a "Veteran" to this kind of game, it is just that I'm new to the WoWs game mechanics. Hello, thanks for the video, such videos are always very informative and you can still learn a little bit about them xD. That the DD class is a "difficult" class and you have to have a lot of knowledge is always a matter of fact. For me, Ca's + BB's are simply not mine, CV's + DD's are so easy, since I have been playing unicum in DDs. Only with the rework in CVs, before that I had lost interest when I had to compete against max-cpt. What I still see as difficult is that you usually never hit a BB (if they have reasonably skill) with torpedoes. Just yesterday I bit my teeth when a Bismarck drove ahead of me when I was in the Z46. In the end I shot 88 torpedoes in the match and only hit 5 (or so) ... Sometimes I think such people (this Bismarck was deep red) are bots, because when I play PVE, the bots immediately dodge my torps, if I throw a set, they change course immediately. And this Bismarck drove every (felt) 5s somewhere else and had only one opponent in front of him. It's always pretty strange, as if such "beginners" have the 1 skill, where you can tell when the target number changes ... I don't think xD. Well, thanks for the video.
Once again thanks for the fantastic info. As far as the obligatory CV menace. If you can stick close to a cruiser or at least try to leave yourself an out. The worst DD play is to die early. If you can find that rare awesome cruiser willing to push with you it is a blessing be sure to thank them. Eventually you will need to play for the cap\spot for team. Since relaying on team mates for AA support is a crap shoot map awareness is your bestest friend.
Awesome play man! I love playing destroyers, I use to hate them. I have been playing a while, but still not so good. However your tips are really good. Thanks :-)
you should create tutorial like these but for middle low tier ships: if someone is at tier XI+ he obviously has the idea on how to play the ship having grindend the line through tier X. It is I think at about tier VI-V that people find themselves in to a different league form what they used to be, aka charge the large ships and drop torps at short range. they now have to deal with more accurate secondaries, cruisers that can blap you accurately at long range and overall you have to learn how to rely on "disappearing" and opportunistic picking. they don't know HOW and their ship are much less devastating then the shima we saw in the early part of this video. Mild tier is the moment when they need to relearn what they had done so far. Everything you tell in this video obviously applies, but the ship you show in game do not: they are WAY more powerful then previous tier and playing at tier X IMO is easier because you always are top tier.
What about German destroyers? Generally speaking, not any particular one of them. Does what you said about hybrids apply to them, or is there something unique about them that significantly changes their playstyle?
Sorry but I have to correct this. Zao has better stealth, is a heavy cruiser with more HE and AP DPM than Bagration, has better rudder shift with access to unique upgrade for destroyer levels of rudder shift, way better 12km torpedoes. Despite both cruisers having vastly different roles and playstyles Zao still overall has better stats than Bagration. What are you smoking because I want it.
Should add that having a CV can be a huge boon to a DD. the worst thing is radar ships, your Cv will likely spot those so you can stay away, people seem to overlook that.
I need to get better with DDs. I've spent most of my time so far playing as a BB and some of my "bad habits" as a BB player copy over to DD and that's not good. DD really can't tank a whole lot, certainly not like DD can. This video should help me out though. Certainly gives me more to think about in terms of positioning. Maybe I can finally increase the number of games I survive as a DD. I managed to survive some last night for the first time ever (even as the Poi boat), but I'm still usually the first to die when playing DD. I need more practice for sure.
So I kinda have question. I played shima after long, long time (when i farmed her i was complete shit, not even avarage, so i didnt like her). Since im kinda avarage now, i wondered if i actually did smth wrong. On ranked game, i took point, then went spotting for my flank, i kept georgia and colbert nicely spotted. When opportunity presented itself i torped georgia and forced her to retreat in panic (3 hits). For a while i went back to spotting, making sure she wont vanish, so my team can finish her off. After my torps went back online i fired nice wall against colbert, since georgia was so near island she could easily dodge salvo. Colbert got 1 shotted by my torps. And yet people just kept telling me and another dd, that we didnt spot and just went for "ego play". From what i told you, have any tips where i possibly screwed?
Playing my Fletcher I find myself being a torpedo boat more often than a gun ship. Maybe it's just my general lack of skill, but I don't find the USN 127s that impactful. Shells are slow, and they don't do much HE damage for me. I can never seem to get as much out of them as what I see from CCs or other players. But if I can ghost BBs I can usually get close enough to assure a torpedo hit or two, and keep my team aware of the stuff I spot. I tend to have trouble if I'm spotted, and using my guns is a fast way of getting that way with little payoff.
really youre just hoping to get fires on BBs and do damage over time. if you force them to repair the fires and torp them after and cause flooding that's already huge damage for you over time. You just repeat this process over and over
@@redfro4992 I do, when I can. But a DD can't be tied only to island cover. You have to be able to move, cap, contest. Or you're just a worse version of a light cruiser.
I usually head in full speed. Drop smoke in a great big U and dance around in that while absolutely shoving ALL my torpedoes in one direction... Usually the enemies drive into em
Whenever there's a cv in the game I change my playstyle completely. I recommend just staying with your BS's or CR's early. Its so worth not losing 4k+ from a missile strike
Is the russian guide the same for Tashkent? And what about Harekaze? The HSF collab ship, she doesn't have quite as many torps but they do still hit hard.
Which class would you put the new DDs in? If you said, I didn't hear. I feel like they'd either be put in the stealthy torpedo or harassment role since they don't have smoke, have decent guns, but also have fast, long range torps.
War gaming told me in a support ticket, that all ships are balanced. I complained that between the carrier and the usual two or three radar ships. Makes the destroyer class completely obsolete. Now I read a few articles, saying that war gaming is trying to transform the game from strategy to a more arcade game play. When you build your entire wows account on destroyers, it makes my ships pretty much useless. I said that War Gaming should reduce aircraft damage and chance of hitting DD's or increase AA capabilities of DD's. Its ridiculous when a tier x carrier can kill a DD with just a rocket squadron. They told me my game play was wrong and that all the destroyers are balanced. I just kills me, when war gaming doesn't listen to their players. Most of the community contributors all say the same thing, that DD's are pretty much useless. What do you think?
It would make more sense to cover the Harugumo or Kleber as the gunboat. Khabarovsk does not really have an advantage here. Also one crucial point you left out, what do you do as a Khabarovska in a single DD game (or double DD)? You cannot really spot for the team and they will generally not want to spot for you.
Hey ICHASE I need help in IJN CV LINE. I am not able to make successful drop with dive bombers. In the whole game there is almost no damage with dive bombers. So I need your complete help in IJN CV LINE please.

7-8 Yes, due to the new 9.2km range on torpedos, since you can play way beyond your conceleament range. But Farragut really can't still stealth torps (Or in very limited ocasions). Up until 6 USN plays like Gunboats.
@@SinisterSaintsExcellion Have you ever even played Gearing? With the Sierra Mike and engine boost activated you can push Gearing's topspeed from 36 to 40.6... that's is pretty significant... It's also not just about the topspeed, it's also about how long it takes for you to reach topspeed again once you have turned. Also, do note that DFAA is pretty much pointless at the current patch... I mean... even the already AA monster of a Des Moines doesn't really bother with DFAA because it's pointless, so why would a destroyer with even weaker AA to begin with do so? And if you are saying "for self-defence", you are playing the match up pretty wrong as-is...
@@FinlayDaG33k I play Fletcher. And is faster than Gearing, if it's not worth on fletcher, it's not worth on a slower, more sluggish ship. Yes i always play with the +5% top speed flag. And yes, with that included you get barely about 1 knot of differencce of Maximum speed. That isn't gonna do anything to your maneuverability when being harassed by planes, or move around the map, you rarely sail in a straight line for more than 30 seconds to achieve that maximum maximum speed often. I remind you, the closer you get to your maximum speed, the slower the acceleration gets, and you must remain in a straight line to achieve it, specially the very last knot. 1knot doesn't change your game. Whereas 4x the dmg on AA whenever you got an annoying squadron spotting you. Well, let's say CV might think twice beforing tunnel visionning yo again. And about reaching top speed. Engine boost doesn't touch acceleration, in only gives you MAXIMUM SPEED, that's it, not how quicker you get to it.
Inside the smoke the ships detection changes to 2km unlike the standard concealment but if u fire an enemy the detection is different from the standard detection a bit lower
How can you see yourself on the mini map? I thought the big white arrow was your ship / my ship but I guess I'm wrong here.. Anyone can answer this question for me that knows the answer. When iChase said he cannot be seen on the minimap he meant that none of the enemies can see him on the minimap as he never got detected by them. The big white arrow indicates your ship on the map.

Both of these are mostly for situations where the enemy knows a DD is nearby already of course (i.e. if you spotted them rather than joining an existing fight).
I think WG should patch this...
@@SukacitaYeremia It adds a little more skill and complexity to the game in a way that doesn't screw over DDs especially, it's a good thing. The patch we need is the one where they delete CVs, buff basically everything German and nerf the heck out of these new Russian ships (Kremlin, Petro and Nevsky).

I've been playing for only a month and your channel is a huge help.
DDs :capping, deny space or caps ,screen off BBs or CTs, give intel
Cruisers : flank, harass ,island hopping, support BBs (hydro / radar)
BBS : Tank, tank ,damage dealer, tank , deny flanks

"see but not be seen" mantra of DD captain
Thank you. Love Gun Boats and just learned some nice lessons.
i needed this, and i didn't even realize it
Evasion tanking was mentioned for the faster destroyers.
I literally rush the enemy and die instantly But after i watch dis video i am more smarter
Bruh 😂
Just bought back my Fubuki this is the vid I needed.
Great video. Thanks for working this series.
I have just started playing WoWs this month, I'm on my 5th Day I think lol
I'm currently at Tier V Kongo and VI Fubuki and tbh I was struggling as I now encounter ships up to Tier VIII, but because of your tutorials most of my matches now are wins and I'm actually becoming more useful for my team and overall a better battle performance on every match.
Thank you iChase! I have been watching your videos ever since 2016, it's just that only recently have I been able and have finally decided to play the game 😊
Just keep at it. You'll be citadeling ships in no time!
Just want to say "well done". That you consider your utility to your team so early in your WoWs career is a solid good. Best of luck.
@@gyrene_asea4133 Thank you! Tbh, you can call me a "Veteran" to this kind of game, it is just that I'm new to the WoWs game mechanics.
Before WoWs, I was playing a not well known game on Android called Naval Front-line 2 (World War Battleship). It may look similar in terms of graphics but a whole lot different. Like a naval warfare simulator on the go.

Hey Chase; awesome video matey
Thank you so much. Really answered many questions i had about DD's.
Most crucial part of this video is the acknowledgement that everything goes out the window when there is a CV.
May I know how did you use the zoom-in view of your torps?
Once again thanks for the fantastic info. As far as the obligatory CV menace. If you can stick close to a cruiser or at least try to leave yourself an out. The worst DD play is to die early. If you can find that rare awesome cruiser willing to push with you it is a blessing be sure to thank them. Eventually you will need to play for the cap\spot for team. Since relaying on team mates for AA support is a crap shoot map awareness is your bestest friend.
Thanks for whispering to us this information. Now those that try to eavesdrop will not hear!
Excellent video. I do a lot of it but also learned a lot from you. Thank you!
Awesome play man! I love playing destroyers, I use to hate them. I have been playing a while, but still not so good. However your tips are really good. Thanks :-)
How can you tell if u show up on their minimap? Thanks!!
you should create tutorial like these but for middle low tier ships: if someone is at tier XI+ he obviously has the idea on how to play the ship having grindend the line through tier X.
Yes, they are hybrids.
2 1/2 years later this is still excellent advice, wish you'd have touched Pan Euros which is my thing. Great vid though!
Would the IV Clemson be a gunboat, torpedo boat, or hybrid?
How does this apply at lower tiers ? Like I'm tier 4 and I can't see what I can do with 10km guns and 6km torpedoes
I think one of the important things to remember is to not be afraid to use ap in gunboats if you get the opportunity.

@@Sfirodrepanoskarxarias And by what logic a t8 ship should be better than a t10 one ?
@@cosminlesutan3574 And by what logic have you come to this conclusion?
Sorry but I have to correct this. Zao has better stealth, is a heavy cruiser with more HE and AP DPM than Bagration, has better rudder shift with access to unique upgrade for destroyer levels of rudder shift, way better 12km torpedoes. Despite both cruisers having vastly different roles and playstyles Zao still overall has better stats than Bagration.

As a DD if their is a CV present you sacrifice a small woodland creature to RnGesus. And turn into a rocket strike for best chance 70% of the time.
Thanks for this series it’s very useful
Should add that having a CV can be a huge boon to a DD. the worst thing is radar ships, your Cv will likely spot those so you can stay away, people seem to overlook that.
Good video! But what about captain skills? Are they important? If yes, which ones are the important ones to get for each kind of DD?
I tend to have trouble if I'm spotted, and using my guns is a fast way of getting that way with little payoff.
i got a Atlanta to train my 127 skill 😂 it works with some interesting pain and pleasure
really youre just hoping to get fires on BBs and do damage over time. if you force them to repair the fires and torp them after and cause flooding that's already huge damage for you over time. You just repeat this process over and over

Cling to carriers with AA power.

It would make more sense to cover the Harugumo or Kleber as the gunboat. Khabarovsk does not really have an advantage here. 7-8 Yes, due to the new 9.2km range on torpedos, since you can play way beyond your conceleament range.

I have one question tho...
Why did that gearing run DFAA instead of schnellboost?
The speed it provides for a sluggish, rather slow DD is not game changer at all, while on CV games, that DFAA can make an actual impact.
@@SinisterSaintsExcellion Well... For me, the speedboost does make a very big change while DFAA makes little to no impact in carrier games...
@@FinlayDaG33k Don't placebo yourself 1knot of MAXIMUM speed, meaning while manuevering it doesn't matter. Doesn't make a difference.
