  • Ian reviews the Firewire Mashup Surfboard:
    www.boardshop.co.uk/hub/firew...
This is the surfboard version of the Swiss Army Knife. Firewire have done it once again. Combining the minds of Rob Machado and Dan Mann was always going to create an incredible surfboard but the Firewire Mash Up has exceeded our already high expectations.
The Mash Up catches your eye immediately, the shallow swallow tail which is not seen on many boards nowadays, the wide point almost in the centre of the board and then the near parallel the rail line, you are instantly intrigued. You can see how heavily influenced parts of the boards are based on the two designer’s minds. The Spitfire was the board Dan Mann chose to base the Mash Up on, whereas the Machado influence comes from the rocker and subtle concave of the insanely successful Seaside model. Breaking the board down, the outline and shape of the front two thirds of the board is very close to the Spitfire profile, with a touch less rocker to aid paddling and help carry speed. The tail is a more Seaside, thinned out but not as much as the Seaside and a slightly shallower V in the swallow that will feel more like a squash tail with even more release. In the tail you find a very pronounced double concave running all the way through the fins to give you speed generation and drive and aid with release. The volume in concentrated through the centre of the board giving an almost domed feel, the thickness drops away down to the rail to ensure you get a responsive surf but still retain the ability to use the board in less than perfect conditions.
The Mash Up looks to be a great Hybrid board that will generate speed and grovel in the weaker mush without being limited in bigger 4-6ft surf! A versatile, grab and go board. The Spitfire was amazing to surf, but you wanted more small wave capabilities, the Seaside has been an all-time best seller, but you want more versatility and performance at the lower end of the wave scale, the Mash Up gives you the best of both worlds.
The 5-fin set up on the Firewire Mash Up adds even more options on how to surf this genius little surfboard. Whack an upright quad set up in the board for speed, drive and release in the smaller waves, then as the surf picks up, change out the fins to a balanced thruster set to give the board more control and hold in stronger waves.
Firewire’s Helium tech is all about making an already amazing set of construction options even better. Its lighter, seems strong, no signs of any pressure marks at all, and very fast. High Density Aerospace Composite Deck Skins and a new Paulownia/Balsa mix on the rails gives a faster flex response. Having surfed the tech in a couple of different models it does feel light but the speed through a stiffer feel and responsiveness is exceptional, Helium is here to stay.
We're happy to consider trading in your old board against a new Firewire, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to info@boardshop.co.uk or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250. And don't forget we offer interest free finance on all new premium surfboards.

I thought I would post my views to give people my first hand experience. I don't usually post on these sites, but I felt I could help others decide,
This board is a great all round smaller/med wave board. I've owned the MR Cali twin for a year now, which is in a similar vein to this, but a bit more fishy, which is an amazing small wave board. Thought I had the perfect small wave board until I stumbled upon this in the surf shop, and, after comparing it dimensions wise to my Cali, pulled the trigger, as it looked like it would do everything my Cali could, but be more forgiving, and flowy, and higher performance.
After surfing it for the last three weeks, and starting to dial it in, this board is amazing!! I have also owned the Seaside for a while, and liked it a lot, but found it was too much of a one trick pony, with the width, thickness and quad setup, it's suited to certain waves, and size, but that was about it.
So, the Mashup is feeling like the perfect combination of plane shape, floatation, foam distribution, rail forgivness, tail/nose shape, bottom curve, swallow area, and tri/quad options. Basically everything that it looked like when I first picked it up off the rack in the surf shop! It looked 'perfect' and so far it's not disappointing in any way.
    Hope this helps, cheers!

@@terryeyland5305 Mashup is a high performance, but still forgiving and easy to surf board that goes well in most small conditions. Seaside is a small wave one trick pony board IMO. Thicker, wider, flatter.

In the seaside review you said you don't want to oversize the board. Can you size up the mashup? I surf some awkward mushy waves that are much more fun with boards 10 liters more than my shortboard. my shortboards are 25-26. I ride a 5'8 34 liter fish and a 5'5 chumlee at 32 liters and love it. I'm looking for something that sits between length and design wise. Would a 5'7 or 5'8 mashup work? I'm 177cm and 67 kilos. Thanks.

Very interesting board. I own a Seaside&Beyond 7´0 (I love the paddling power of o45 lts) and a Hydroshort 6'1 (36 lts). Considering this, what would you guys recommend for the Mashup sizewise (I'm 85Kg, 180 cm)? And would it overlap these boards in any way?

Overlaps slightly with the Pyzalien 2. Better low end in the Mashup, better high end in the Pyzalien 2

How does this compare to something like the lost rad ripper - on a broad level I’m getting the impression that they’re both primarily designed for the 1-5’ surf, but is there anything in one of the boards that you would say is better for someone who’s starting to progress in their intermediate surfing?

    • @BoardshopUK
      @BoardshopUK  2 года назад

Good comparison. Rad Ripper has more speed and less control. Less top end in the RR. The Mashup is more versatile and has more control with a bigger wave range.

How'd you compare this to a Sci-fi 2. Looking to replace my current daily driver for one in some variation of expoxy with slightly better lower end - both of these fit the bill (currently you have neither in my size, guess its a case of waiting?)

Does it have plenty of drive? I had a Sci fi and that was the main problem with it. I’ve never had that on a board before. I like the tomo evo, plenty of drive and foam but seems better for fatter point waves.
