    excellent review good to hear an unbiased opinion , as most reviews show ex pros saying how good the board is but most people are"nt pro level surfers, interesting the rocker you was saying with the flat sections ,board looked very fast from take off, also looked good for tube riding with plenty of speed , keep up the good work and the new format was good too.

      has of right now, I they are about the same. bigger than 5' would be Glazer. Smaller then 3 the Mashup. But the 4 and 5 mark, about the same. The think the glazer is a tad better in steeper faster waves where the wave gives you speed and the mashup wins where the waves is soft and you need to generate the speed.

      I have been looking at the mashup in volcanic lately but then found a glazer on line and I had a glazer a couple years ago and have to say it was magic, it worked for me in almost every condition and I am thinking about grabing that board instead. It's just a bummer that the glazer is discontinued, do you have an opinon? I would say I am an upper intermediate lower level advanced surfer. best way to look at it, and I wish I had used these words in my video is this:
      Seaside and Mashup are equal in the size of waves they can handle.
      Seaside is more user friendly all around and in fact more user friendly in better shaped waves but not by much. we are talking fractions.
      Mashup is a better performer in in smaller softer waves because it is more agile. Because it is narrow, it is easier to tick tack and push around.
      If you are someone like Kevin Scholz, you are able to maximize the performance. but if someone is an intermediate, the seaside is the better option, just for ease of use.
      BTW, really appreciate you supporting the channel. That is really awesome of you.

    Great review, thank you. It seems that the mashup is your favourite board (for up to head high say) at the moment? I've got a Seaside in 5'8" (35.4L) that I love and have used for 2 years, but I definitely think I oversized it slightly. Recently bought a Mashup in 5'8" (33.7L), to give that bit more performance in general beach break stuff, and at the wave pool (my local). Only tried it 3 times at the pool so far, but it seems perfect for that. Definitely doesn't paddle quite as well (2 inches narrower and more nose rocker), neither does it project laterally or flow so much. But it handles steeper takeoffs better, still catches waves fairly easily, and is substantially better top to bottom. It certainly feels more progressive. Really liking it so far.

    I need to try this board more as a groveler but I agree with everything you said based on my sessions riding it in fair to good head high plus waves. I don't feel it's a great daily driver, I'd still choose the Dom 2. Especially you mentioned 'dont size up the mashup'. One of my biggest issues with the board so far is the stiffness; I have a dominator 2 that's 5'7 and 2 3/8 and the 5'6 mashup that's 2 and 9/16; this extra 3/16 in thickness inhibits the flex IMO. The stiffness and low rocker does produce a lot of down the line speed, projection, and gets you through the flat transitions but it's not ideal in shoulder to head high or plus waves.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +1

      exactly. you have the perfect comparison too, a dom2 that is 1 to 2 inches bigger. I think I should have tested the dom2 in a 5'5 or 5'6. Also, "stiffness" is a great single word explanation for that I was trying to say. I think I was trying too hard to describe what I was feeling. haha thanks for the help on that. :)

      Fins, tried the Fanning large on some of the 3+ foot days where it was soft. I needed more drive on those days. On the punchier days, I ran Naked Viking medium quads as well as the Toledo thrusters. I liked it equally on both. I need to try and figure out where the difference comes in. On other boards it seemed more apparent but the Mashup sort of blended the fins so I have not concluded that yet. That might be a cheap video to do next. :)

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs Год назад

      this is a little tough question. So, I'm 5'8 and 140 so my 5'4 Mash is a factor of .1975. if you were to get the exact relative board to your weight, it would be 33.875L. Probably a 5'8 or 5'9. If you intention is to grovel, I would stay in this range. If you want highenbd performance along with some grovel, the 57 is a better bet since you don't want to get the board too tall relative to your stance.
      Anyways, my buddy is about 5'11 and surfs a 6'4. He weighs 200 so he needed the liters but he seems to enjoy his board quite. But he is an advanced surfer.
      If your goal is to surf with your 8yr old, the waves will likely be small. You want more paddle and float. I think it will catch waves well and surf down the line well as a bigger board but carving might be hindered. It will turn but just have a difficult time carving. Mostly cuz the waves will be smaller.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

      ocean beach gets big. when you surf that place, how big do you like to surf it and what are the waves mostly like, soft or hollow, on the days you like to surf it. although I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three, it depends on what you are looking for. The seaside to me seems like the best option. The Mashup is really flat rockered. so if you waves are OB are standard to punchy, the curve of the seaside would feel better and be easier.
      There are a few that said they like the Mashup in bigger waves but I have not found that for myself. quite the opposite. The seaside is a tad more user friendly in better shaped waves.

    • @Honestly__now

      @@ThomyeSurfs Thanks so much for the reply. I would say its fairly strong beach break like Newport people say and punchy, but I do surf it up to double overhead and it can barrel and be a fast wave. Typically the waves around here in the sf bay area are beach breaks - range from a lot of slop with crumbly faces to clean barrels but the waves usually have power on the takeoff at least. my main issue is dropping in too late so I may be looking for more volume on a seaside and see where it gets me. Helpful review Thomye. How do you compare wave catching ability / paddle power in the same conditions versus Seaside?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +2

      comparing the 5'3 Seasdie 28.2 L to the 5'4 Mashup 27.1L goes something like this:
      Paddle feels very similar. Nothing I can tell or differentiate.
      Catching wave - there is a slight advantage for me on the Seaside. The fact that it is 1" wider, it gets to planing speed a fraction quicker. Hard to quantify but take a tad less effort. Having said that, one thing I do notice about the boards I have been surfing lately is that they are narrower, the Mashup is roughly 1" narrower. So digging in is easier. Less stress on shoulders and more power from back. I have to try harder but it does feel better. Hope that makes sense.
      My Twice baked which is over 21" wide catches waves better but those waves that I have to make an effort for, feel bad on my shoulders since I feel like my arms are off to the side more and not directly under me.
      In the end, depending on what size board you are comparing, I think generally speaking, paddle is roughly the same while the catch is leans toward seaside. Also, the seaside takes more volume from tail and has it up towards chest.

    Super insightful video to stumble upon! I am currently torn between getting a seaside or a rocket wide and was wondering if you had any advice? Im in NZ surfing 2 - 5 feet waves that can vary from mushy to punchy and I need something that can handle both. Im coming from a high volume fish, I liked how easy it was to paddle but wanted a bit more manoeuvrability out of my next board

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs Год назад +1

      welcome and BTW I love NZ, cleanest most amazing place I have ever visited. Anyways, if 5' is the max but bulk of the waves are in between 2 and 5, then I would say seaside. if it is bigger and you want the option to surf bigger, then go with the Rocket Wide. Although they have similar outlines, the height the volume ratio is a tad different and so is the rocker.
      Height to volume - seaside is shorter with more volume while the RW is a tad taller. The ones I have surfed, I think the 5'3 seaside and the 5'6 RW come in around the same volume. Double check that since I'm doing this from memory. I like short boards for grovel and longer boards for better waves.
      Width - seaside is also wider for the length and volume. that makes it a better groveler.
      Rocker - RW has more rocker so it tend to handle better waves with more control. Seaside has some and can handle up to about 5' depending on your skill level but it wants to go fast so as the waves get bigger, harder to transfer that speed to rail. Having said that, if you are coming off a fish, that might be perfect. its turns better at slower speeds but can get going.
      Construction - the Seaside is in Helium construction. this is my favorite construction. It is light weight but super durable. I hardly ever get pressure dings. If you want a board to last, this is also the better call.
      Recapping, the only reason I would go with an RW at this point would be the option to surf bigger waves. or surf the smaller stuff with more performance. The performance though could go either way, that depends on how big of a board you get. past a certain point, the shorter boards tend to perform better.
      Hope this helps. Cheer

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +2

      for me it's been this odd learning experience.
      Seaside is super user friendly.
      El Tomo feels a little stiff at times on my forehand but is the best backside board I have ridden. but is only good from 2' to 4' backhand. Any bigger and I seem to struggle. Also the stiffness might be a sizing issue. I'm on the 5'6 and I think the 5'5 or even the 5'4 would have been a better fit.
      Mashup, works well on both frontside and backside for me, but in the smaller waves, about waist high, I'm abe to get so much more speed that I feel like I'm able to whip it around and practice things I can't usually practice unless it's shoulder high. If I only surfed somewhere like Lowers, I might not ever pick the Mashup as my daily but that may also be true for the other two boards. I will say though, for Bolsa, it has become my daily and if I'm not filming, it is what I take out.

      no, I have not tried the EVO yet. Not sure i'll get the chance. The Mashup is the fastest that "I" have ever ridden but with the NVS fins. I'm certain there are faster, likely a few twin's out there are going to be faster. Hard to qualify without a Trace or some sort of app. I used to have one, not sure it still works. might have to test it. The fastest I have ever clocked on Trace was 27mph. big day at San on on my 5'1 Baked Potato. Likely it was a drop to bottom turn or a floater to bottom turn. but 27mph is fast given my average speed was around 16.

      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +4

      without looking it up, my M2 is 5'6 29L. The Mashup is 5'4 27.1. Catching waves and paddling goes to the M2, but only by a very slight margin. because that 2L diff is up in a fatter nose and not concentrated in the chest. Also the M2 is wider so planes quicker. In smaller waves, soft to standard, the Mashup is more nimble. In standard to punchier waves, the M2 is easier to control and I had more confidence. I think it was the rolled bottom of the M2 and likely more tail rocker although I would have do measure to know for sure. The Mashup is faster, much faster.
      Somewhere like Trestles and Newport, I would likely go with the M2.for anything bigger than 3'. Any softer and smaller, I'll pick Mashup. I will do a comparison video for sure. Side by side.

      Hard for me to compare the two mostly because I surfed the Sunday at a volume range way beyond the Mashup. I have the 6' and 6'8 Sunday which are uber uber grovelers to me. They had fun aspects of performance but weren't really performance. I was able to do turn but you can tell there was some reservations in completing them. On the smaller stuff, the M2 is a tad better at groveling because of the extra volume and width but the Mashup performs better on the knee to chest high. The M2 does better on Chest high to 2+ overhead. rough estimate but hopefully you get my point.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs Год назад +1

      6'4 @200 seems like a fit 200 so I have to guess you paddle well. I'm 5'8 @ 140. My grovel ratio is .2 and my uber grovel ratio is .221 or there about. Bascially I surf my seasdie at .2 per lbs and my sweet potato at around .221. If you wanted to surf a seaside at my exact ratio, then it would be .2 x 200. basically 40L which would put you on a 5'10 or 5'11. For the sweepee, that would be 44.42L (.221 X 200), which would be the 5'10 @45L. the liters I mentioned are strictly mathematical. taking other things into consideration is super important. Skill level surfing, skill level paddling, the type of waves you often surf, etc. But from the Liters mentioned above, you should be able to get an idea. If you are coming off a super long boaty board, then compromise by adding .02 to .04 to the liter ratio. Anyways, at the surfing level you mentioned, I would consider a 6' or 6'1 Seaside. that boards is just easy to surf. For the sweepee, you can either go 6'2 to make it a wave catching machine. but it will be harder to turn and won't be as smooth. I found it to be a great uber groveler but clunky for maneuvers but it also depends on the degree and type of maneuvers. I was having fun doing floaters and soft turns. hope this wasn't too confusing.

I would not recommend getting this board too out of proportion. meaning if you are 5'8, same as me, then then something like a 5'7 might be too tall. you would be out of the sweet spot in terms of your stance. unless you have a very wide stance.

      No, the El Tomo fish has a much wider tail block. Although it seems smaller cuz of the vador swallow, it was still wide and stable. Great drive in softer smaller stuff but not the same pivot. I Mashup feels to me more like a normal performance board. closer to it. Also, the El Tomo seemed a lot bigger than it was. I think I surfed the 5'6 but it felt big. I likely should have ridden the 5'5. The 5'4 Mashup to me feels perfect for my height and weight.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

      this is a hard comparison for me. Because the spitfire and dom both were wide point back, in order for me to like the board, I surfed it at 5'8 which is oversized. that board was 31L. In the mashup, it is wide point forward so I was able to down size it.
      comparing the 5'4 to the 5'8 isn't really fair, the Mashup mashes the spit. The only thing I can compare that would be fair in dan mann line is the dom2. I had the 5'4 Dom2. But that board was 25.9L which is close enough but because the wide point was back, it felt like a 5'0 to me. with so little control on the dom2, I still feel the mashup had better performance. but this is in smaller waves or softer bigger waves.
      I would love to try the 5'5 or 5'6 dom2 but can't afford to. maybe i'll come across a used one at some point.

      @@rjcplus9 so originally, i thought the mashup fit between the seaside and spitfire. The spitfire looks more traditional performance but thicker, wider, a tad shorter. Classic groveler. But the Mashup ended up being more on the lower end for me. it has better performance than the seaside (nimble) but wave size and quality, it fit below the Seaside and not in between the two.
      I think it all has to do with the flatter rocker. it is great for speed but then to do a hard carve, at least for me being so heavy front footed, it didn't do as well as the seaside in bigger or stronger waves.
      My 5'4 dom2 was just too short for me. the liters were right but the wide point was way too far back and between my legs. with the mushup, the wide point is forward. the transition was natural for me, the board felt right where as the dom2, i felt like i needed to get used to it.
      For my beach, Mashup and Seaside is a good combo although it may appear to be redundant, I think that performance different and speed separates them enough to where it makes sense to have both. For me, the dom2 is just sized wrong. Because of the shape, i would like the outline of a 5'8 but then the volume goes into the super groveler range. so it was harder for me to compare.

That would put enough liters above your other boards to make a difference. I would also recommend getting rid of one of the two, mashup or scifi and getting a seaside. I think your quiver would be perfect if you had the 5'7 Mashup, 5'6 Seaside, and the 6'0 Sunday. then you would be covered from 31L to 38L.
      Watch my 6'0 Sunday video, the very first one I did. as a twin, the board still has really good elements of performance. And then, if you have instagram, watch the recent sunday video on super small waves. Having said that, make sure you consider our differences. I'm 5'8 140lbs. they are super similar for catching waves but only if you are comparing the Mashup to the EPS version of the BQ. I have the 5'4 Mashup which is Helium, that board is super light and buoyant. If you compare that to the PU BQ, the Mashup hands down will paddle and catch waves better. But if you get the EPS version of the BQ (spine-tek), they are too close to actually compare.
      but for me, actualy surfing, I like my Mashup in smaller waves because I can set it up as a 2+1. The BQ, obviously is quad only. I guess you could try putting in big front fins and smaller rear fins. The 2+1 allow me to get much quicker speed and also top end speed.

      @@ThomyeSurfs Had a chance to compare the rnf96, mashup and podmod today. So similar, rnf96 seemed to have a bit more tail and nose rocker but rails and tail seemed fuller. Mashup widepoint seems a little further back and rails are thinner, tail is def thinner, seems to have a fairly flat spot under the feet, RNF seems to have a bit more curve in the belly. Pod mod rails seem the thickest and rocker is lower like the mashup, but still seems to have slightly more curve in the belly than the mashup. I guess that all adds up to the mashup being so good in smaller conditions? How do you like your 5'4 for size\volume?

    What fin set up are you using most? I put the mashup into some 6 foot slopey waves with a quad and it felt so sticky, almost like the opposite of how it rides when its smaller. 2+1 is a bit too loose and not enough drive. Haven't tried quad keels but that seems to be the most common so far.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад

      the sticky might actually be an product of the bottom. it begin so flat, it is fast and too hard to transition into rail, at least in bigger more punchier waves. the last two times I have surfed, I have been riding it has a 2 +1 in small waves and it has been amazing. I just dont' think this board works well in waves bigger than 3 to 5. I won't really know till I get it out in those conditions but the few times I have been on the bigger set waves, I have struggled with turns.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

      they are nothing alike. The mashup to me feels more like a traditional performance board with grovel features like a flatter rocker, slightly wider, thicker in the middle. Making it a great performance board in small waves.
      The fishbeard is much stiffer or tighter which I do like in certain conditions. It is super drivey and fast but not as skatey. I think in the beachbreaks, I like the mashup. I would likely prefer the fishbeard on a longer point break like church if church were a left and not a right. Also, I would like the fishbeard at San O point. Newport, HB, and bolsa, I want something that has immediate get up and go which the mashup does well.
      Fishbeard has longer drawn out turns while the mashup is snappy and pivoty.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 11 месяцев назад +1

      do you consider yourself good at catching waves? in terms of positioning to catch a wave and then also catching the wave? a lot of times, you want volume for paddling around and positioning. In terms of volume, me at 145, I surf the Mashup at 27.1L. if we did the mathematical conversion to your weight, that would put you at 31.77L. However, I consider myself to be a low level advanced surfer and likely a high intermediate paddler.
      If you are fit and good at catching waves, you can challenge your self at do the 5'7 Mashup. 5'8 is likely a good option and safe. But 5'9 would be best if you aren't fit or not great at positioning and timing. It's hard for me to make an exact recommendation but can give you suggestions.
      lastly, regarding other boards. just look at boards that would put you in and around 33L to 35L (on the higher end for PU boards), and make sure it isn't longer than 5'9. 5'9 and under at that volume will insure that the board is wide enough to be a decent groveler. Some similar boards would be the Lost RNF96 which looks super similar to the Mashup in terms of outline.
      another good tip/rule of thumb is that if you do want more volume, try and get more of a groveler board that is shorter/wider. for instance, if you wanted to be really safe and get 35L, on a Mashup, that would be a 5'10. The longer the board, the more it takes to turn and move it around. so, in order to compensate for the increased volume, rather than a Mashup, go with a Seaside. the Seaside at 5'8 is 35L. decreasing the length by 2" does help with swing weight and pivoting making it slightly easier to turn.
      Something I have seen with some of my friends that have the Mashup, most people that ride it at their height an or shorter love it. a few that bought it taller than themselves don't like it, they feel it is hard to turn. Anyways, hope that helps guide you a bit. sorry for the long response.

I am actually borrowing my friends 5'8 mashup now and I feel I am a comfortable with positioning and paddling but I can't get into the wave early enough to capitalize the speed from the drop, especially when the wave is mushy, which is most time in north SD. so I think you are right 5'9 might be a better choice. and I actually had a seaside and I loved it but wanted to improve my surfing to go top to bottom so I sold it. What's your thoughts on an oversized more performance shape? let's say a 36 or 37L inferno 72. Would that be easier or harder to turn.? will longer length help me to get into the wave early? since the longer tail got picked up sooner? thanks again for your reply! btw, do you do any coaching or video analysis? :)

      @ThomyeSurfs 11 месяцев назад

      @@tanneddude8330 longer boards do help with early entry, lift as well as the volume that is built into longer boards. a board like the 72 also has enough tail rocker to turn easy but only off the tail. longer boards have larger swing weight but in the case of the 72, it won't be too bad. since it is a performance board with a narrow and pointy nose. I would say that also, if you do get a performance board, it does help that it is eps or something lighter than PU especially in softer conditions. having said that though, a 72 at 36/37 liters would be 6'4 and 20.62" wide. although that isn't that long, it depends on how tall you are. I'm 5'8 and used to surf 6'4's long ago.
      having said that, have you looked at the dom2? a 36L dom2 would be 6'1. several benefits to this 1) it's shorter 2) slightly wider = better grovel 3) less swing weight 4) wide point is moved back on top of it will naturally be further back since it is shorter than a 6'4 Inferno 72. the dom2 surfs shorter by about 1.5 to 2 inches. so it will feel like a 5'11. Just a thought. my all time favorite board is my Sharpeye inferno FT so far. i like it a tad more than the mashup. Mashup is a very close 2nd. so i'm not trying to steer you away from the inferno 72, but to me, I think in the liters you are looking to get, you might be better off on the dom2. The Seaside is user friendly at almost any size. I surfed everything from the 5'2 all the way up to the 5'10. obviously the bigger you go the less maneuverable but still pretty loose and surprising. The mashup is good for better performance in the smaller waves or softer bigger waves but not as much performance as one would think. it has less tail rocker than the seaside so not as carvey. hard to describe. Seaside is the safest bet and one that a person would want in the quiver. you should also never let go of a performance board the seaside is a staple.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +3

      i'm on the 5'3 seaside too. it is likely bigger than what i should ride but I also wanted it for surfing smaller waves. by smaller, i mean even smaller and softer than what it was designed for. The thing with the seaside is, because of it's design, it is deceptive. I feel like most other boards if it were that wide and that many liters, I would struggle. The seaside is so user friendly it also makes me think i need something bigger. as reference though, most of my other boards in that liter range are all 5'6 or 5'7.
      the 5'4 Mashup to me even though it is only 1" longer, and the 1" is just a pointy nose, so basically the board is actually shorter if you compare the meaty parts.
      you do lose 1L and 1" width so it won't plane as quickly or as easily, but it is very minimal. Also, the narrower and more parallel rail line as compared to the seaside, makes the Mashup feel tighter. The seaside feels like a loose squirrely board but with a ton of drive (which seems like an oxymoron) . The Mashup doesn't feel that loose. this is relative to the seaside. The mashup feels super loose relative to the SciFi2 or El Tomo Fish.
      Anyways, I feel like I picked the correct Mashup, 5'4". but I'm 5'8 and 140lbs. I should probalby be on a 5'2 seaside for volume but I don't like the short railine.
      depending on your height and stance, I would use that as your biggest factor. i have a medium stance which when surfing the mashup, makes the board look longer. if I had a wide stance or I was tall, I may have gone longer.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад

      comparing my 5'3 Sea to the 5'4 Mash, the sea is 1 L more but it is 1" wider which planes better. if you think about the skimboard, which probably has a volume of less than 3L, the guys that do it, they turn their boards where the nose and tail are to the side, essentially making it like 3" wide. but it is super fast. Width doesn't get mentioned enough. it is a huge factor for catching waves.
      PADDLING - when paddling they are the same, although the seaside is 1L more, the mashup is narrow so i can dig deeper. The two offset each other. I cannot say one is better than the other.
      CATCHING - the seaside being 1" wider, can get to planing speed a fraction of a second faster. So there is a difference and the seaside edges out the Mash but it's nothing that is noticeable on every wave, just on smaller or softer waves where you start paddling too early.
      SURFING - the Mashup seems nimble and the seaside flows better. Hope that helps.

      it's a close one. I haven't surfed my Mashup in forever so I forgot how it even feels. I can only go off of how much I liked it at the time and footage. Having said that, if you told me I had to choose, I would give a very slight edge to the Mashup and here are the reasons why:
      1. Helium construction - super durable. Barely pressures so every time you rewax, the board feels new.
      2. More fin options - I say more and not better because the quad worked well. On the Mashup, I did settle on the 2+1 T. Knox tins, which I love.
      3. Possible higher ceiling of performance. Slightly narrower tail but not narrow. Plenty of drive and also has a slight pulled in nose.
      4. No office to Bobby but I like Kelly more. LOL this isn't really a factor but I like to support Kelly, Rob, Kalani (wish he had a board that wasn't a foamy).
      The BQ was great too though. I would love both but somewhat redundant. :( Can't justify the spend especially since i have to keep trying out new boards for the channel.
      I do love the spine-tek weight but it does pressure dent more than the helium. Personally, I think they should have dropped a 5th fin box just to see how it went. Bobby Pent instead of Bobby Quad. Anyways, I listed what seems like a lot in favor of the Mashup but at the end of the day, the BQ looked and felt really good on me so it was much closer decision than I can express on paper.

      i just looked up the volume of the 2 boards you have and they both came in around 37L. One thing I would say is don't go taller than your own height on the Mashup. And from the looks of the volume on the Mashup, the 6' version is more liters than the seaside and the SP2. so, I would recommend going with the 5'10 and having the Mashup with a tad less liters than your Seaside and SP. You want to be able to move that thing around. If waves get soft, you have 2 really good choices to fall back on, Seaside and SP2. So, challenge yourself with the 35L 5'10". In fact, mathematically speaking, you riding the 5'8 would be the same as me riding my 5'4. You could stand to go with the 5'9 but i'm not exactly sure of the type of waves, your skill, or your fitness. I'm guess you are fit since your height to weight seems athletic. Anyways, hope that helps. just make sure not to go taller than the 5'10, don't go shorter than the 5'9.

      any board can be ridden in any size. but you brought up a very good question, "what sort of problems could I have". at that length/liters, you are oversizing the mashup which for some boards work but others don't. in fact, the volume to weight ratio for you on the 6'1 is .251515. to give you an idea, I surf my mashup at .187586. I get this number by taking the volume divided by weight. Having said that, I personally like the Mashup because it is flatter and has a swallow making the board a bit tighter and drivey. My guess is, if you go bigger, the elements that I just mentioned get magnified. it will catch waves easily but it might be hard to turn in the pocket. Especially on smaller waves.

I would say, don't go any taller than the 6'. depending on your height, that board should be ridden shorter than your won height, but it doesn't mean it won't work if ridden taller. It will just be tight based on being a flatter board with a swallow tail. To loosen it up, you can ride it as a 2+1 or quad.
      At your weight, don't be afraid to challenge yourself with 38L. To give you an idea, I learned on 28 and probably didn't surf anything over 30L for the first 10 years of surfing. Yes, more L would have put me on more waves but likely not much more L.

      Last point, remember to that when you buy a shorter board, the volume in question is now centered more directly under you. example, if you took a 40L board that was 8' vs one that was 5'8, the5'8 actually floats better because non of it will be sitting out of the water in front of you or behind you. I used to surf a 5'1 board at 29L which floated way better than a 5'8 31L board. it was also wider so caught waves way easier.
      Hope some of this info helps. Again, at your weight and your skill level, my concern with downsizing too much would start around 32L. Should be fine at 38. Also, if the waves get smaller, you also have your old board. this is why a quiver is super important if you can afford it.
      Cheers brotha. Good luck

    How do you feel the mash-up compares to the rocket wide..

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs Год назад +1

      I haven't had the opportunity to ride the R Wide. but if i had to guess based on specs, I would say the mashup has a better lower end (smaller softer wave) coverage while the R Wide might do better in punchier and bigger waves. The rocker on the Mashup is staged with a flat section to allow for better speed in smaller softer waves. the lack of tail rocker makes it harder to surf or not as easy as other boards with more tail rocker in punchier, steeper, bigger waves.
      the mashup will tend to push water when you try and carve it while something like my hypto turns easier when i have more speed. but down the line speed is all Mashup., I swear it is the fastest board i have ever surfed.

    Do you like the mashup or glazer better when it’s 4-5ft?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs Год назад +1

      i havn'e surfed the mashup much in 4 to 5. based on everything I know of the board and the Glazer, I think the Mashup works better in 4 to 5 soft to medium waves while the glazer will perform a tad better in 4 to 5 steep punchier conditions. For sure the Mashup wins hands down smaller than 4 ft. Neither boards are great above 6' so not sure it makes sense to compare them in that range. Thanks for the question.

      Just took it out in the Earl swell this morning and the board went insane. Waves were 4-5 with the occasional overhead wave and as someone who rides a seaside 99% of the time, this felt like a natural step up to the seaside. Took two overhead waves and the board was so much fun. The first one I was running the large neutral legacy template with 4.0 trailers and the speed and hold was really great but the tail just felt to lively for me to commit to any big turns. I got out and put in a large AM thruster and tried it again and it work beautifully to tame to the tail. I’m a big fan of quads but once it’s head high, a thruster set is the way to go. Looks like the swell will fade a little tomorrow and probably only be 3-4 so I’ll be back on the seaside. I could ride the mashup but I’m pretty sure I’ll be sore and a bit sluggish tomorrow morning after surfing my brains out today.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

      Mashup. not sure I would put them in the same bucket. close but the mashup is more versatile. it goes as a quad, thruster, twin, twin +1. The fishbeard is fun but it's either a loose twin or a drivey twin (upright vs keel). I like both but if I had to choose, mashup.

    Windsurf boards have no tail rocker. If you can get hold of an old one that someone is throwing out, try it for a couple of surfs. You will hate it but you will be shocked how quick it is. Tail rocker effects speed more than any other factor.

      @@ThomyeSurfs I made surfboard for myself for 10-15 years. Making sailboards was the test. If you design windsurfers wrongly you get a buoyancy device. They just don't work however most shapes for surfboards work a bit. It's all about drag a energy of water separation.
      A surfboard starts as a displacement hull and then becomes a hydroplane. Both must be optimised to get the best results. Then you have to make it turn.
      You only have to look a foilers to see how ineffective surfboards are.

    Is 4/6 ft waves in the small category?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 4 месяца назад +1

      that is about the middle of the small waves category in my opinion. But it is all relative I think. I used to think 6' waves were big 15 years ago. Now it feels small. This boards ability to manage wave sizes, all boards for that matter, definitely is based on the surfers' skill and what it is you are looking to do on the wave in my opinion.
      This board can handle double overhead if you plan on facing down the line. surfing tight in the pocket in double overhead might be way more challenging. Lack of tail rocker makes this thing want to go fast and straighter on rail. but it's all relative. Rob seems to surf any and every board well in double overhead Seaside beach. haha

    Mashup has more or less nose and tail rocker than seaside?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 10 месяцев назад

      laying them flat on the ground, a 5'4 Mashup compared to a 5'3 Seaside, the tail of the seaside sits about 1/4" higher than the Mashup. so I have to assume the seaside has more tail rocker The opposite is true for the nose but the the mashup is 1" longer so that might be just a smallest of flip in the nose. But they are very similar though.

    From what noel says the chart is not accurate that's weird... also on the website it shows more rocker on the Mashup compared to the seaside ... also i heard it is great from 1-4ft

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs 2 года назад +1

      I'd imagine it all depends on which boards you compare. I compared the 5'3 Seaside 28.2L to the 5'4 Mashup 27.1L. wonder if you compared them by length it would be the other way. One thing about Dan Mann designs for sure is that he tends to have a massive flat section in the middle which is why are are fast in less than perfect conditions.
      I have found other things to be off in my assessment of certain boards. Sometimes they will say wide point back from center and it is more front or centered. I think for me, all those stats and info is great as a starting point but you have to feel it and ride it to know for sure. But I do love my Mashup. Harder and harder to take out other boards. :(

      Mashup for most except rights. The ETF for me worked so good backing backside. also, when it get slightly punchier, i think ETF. The ETF was super stable, the Mashup is fast and feels a tad out of control, but controlling it makes the board so much more exciting. But to give you an idea, it is 7:30am and I'm about to hit the beach. I don't think I'm filming today cuz of soloshot issues. I'm taking the Mashup. :)
