Firewire Mashup Surfboard Review

- In this episode, I review the Mashup. It's the latest model from Firewire Surfboards. Two legends Rob Machado and Dan Mann have created the Mashup from the Spitfire and Seaside.
I personally would add the vibe from the Dominator 2 to it. The Firewire Mashup is presented to us as an ultimate groveler and ultimate everyday board.
My Height: 5’9” or 175.3 cm
My Weight: 165 lbs. or 75 kg
The Mashup feels as a friendly high performance shortboard allowing you to do maneuvers with less effort when the conditions are right.
Having medium entry rocker with plenty of volume under chest and belly allow you to paddle into steeper waves easier.
Someone asked me to measure the rocker in the previous episode. Basically the nose is 4.5" inches (11.5 cm) and the tail is 1.5" inches (4 cm).
The Mashup is super fun board for the right conditions! If you already have the Seaside, you may want to consider it as the next upgrade.
Enjoy this episode!

Wow nice review!
Thank you for another helpful review!
Thanks for watching brother!
Great review! I've been waiting for it. I'm gonna order one today! Thank you, Yuri!
Thanks for watching🤙🏼
Looks like you were surfing faster in the one. Good work, keep It up!
Thank you, Lucas!
Nice review!
Thank you, Alex🙏🏼
cool review🤙waiting for my 5'5 to arrive...plan for it to be ridden in good 2-3 beachbreaks.above that i go with the 5'8 tomo hydroshort.when its very small and weak my HS plunder is the magic one..
Yew! It's gonna be fun in 2-3 beach break but I would definitely push it for bigger surf. I've never tried Hydroshort. I kinda skipped that hype when it came out. I heard it's a good wave board! How big is your plunder? Glides good in choppy/weak 1-2 ft waves? I've been seeing them on the craiglist but never pulled the trigger to get one.
@@SkipperSurfReview
the plunder is all about glide and fun.but...due to the dimond tail and very low rails the board can also turn and perform.i ride it as a quad and if you get it in the right dims and not too big and long you will be amazed..this is pure fun.kind of board make you smile and fill good before even reaching the line up..im 72 kg (53 years old) and ride the 5'6 comes in 30 liter.
I used the Dan Mann fins, quad set up and worked great from 4' to 8'.
Great!! Thanks for sharing it!
It looks awesome under your feet! I already have D2 but I may go for the Mashup :)
Thank you, Anthony. Yew! Have fun🥳
right on Yuri. Great review, very detailed. This will definitely help people make a decision. Yewww
Thank you brotha! Can't wait to see yours ripping it at Bolsa.. You should take it to Trestles one day to throw some buckets! Did Firewire send you any ETA?
@@SkipperSurfReview no word. :( hoping soon though.
@@ThomyeSurfs 🙏🏼
Well done mate
Thank you!
Nice review bro.
Thank you🙏🏼
Thanks for the review. Guess not so good. I surf the same type of waves in NJ and trying to decide between the D2 and the mash up. Leaning towards the d2 now
Thanks for watching! I would go Mashup for our waves.
The large endorfins work well in the Mashup. They pivot great and offer up drive and speed. I'm sure another pair of fins could make it a little faster, but may sacrifice drive and pivot. I have the 5'4" and bought it for a local spot when its 3-5' beach break and for those conditions it works great. I bought it for its' size-to-volume ratio and helium construction which makes a great traveler.
I agree that the Mashup is not a true groveler. It needs a better wave to perform, but once up to speed it can really go up, down, and surf the pocket. It has some great attributes that make it worth the purchase IMO.
Thank you so much! I've just ordered Endorfins 5 fin set! Stoked! Yes, it's worth the purchase! I believed that I surfed much better on the Mashup :) Can't wait to surf it more!
Loving my Mashup - can't say it feels corky though. Super lively and fun! Give it a go with a standard set of quads as well, I personally preferred them over the Machado ones 😊
Thank you Chris, I’ve just ordered KS Endorfins. Hope they change the game😜
@@SkipperSurfReview Did you order the endorfins in medium or large?
@@kristianszeto6424 i've ordered them in Large size.
@@kristianszeto6424 Firewire still hasn't sent them out yet... They maybe out of stock :(
@@SkipperSurfReview Thanks for the fast reply! I ordered them too and still waiting they said they would restock sometime in March. So hopefully we get them soon!
So do you prefer the D2 over de Mashup? What would you choose as a 2 board quiver un adition to a seaside And beyond? Thanks!
Hey David! I would prefer to have Mashup over D2. The Dominator 2 allows you to do more radical turns, sharper turns, quicker release of the tail and just full on high performance. You would need to work harder on it and also have to be precise with your technique to get full advantage of the model. The Mashup on the other hand allows you to do all of that with less aggression LOL. Just more fun with forgiving experience. I personally felt more relaxed and less worried about speed generation. Basically there is a trade off in terms of performance. To answer your questions, The Mashup could be a good addition to the Seaside and Beyond. You can surf smaller waves on the Seaside and Beyond and when it gets a little bit punchier 2ft+ with good face, jump on the Mashup. In terms of wave count, the Mashup won't give you more waves and it will be pretty much similar to Dominator 2 in terms of positioning. I consider it as a shortboard. It doesn't have that glide of a small wave board that you can get from well glassed fish from a local shaper or Mini Simmons. Hope this helps! Cheers!
Have you reviewed the js xero ? How do you think they would compare ? Seems like the mashup has a heap more foam and fatter rails. Easier grovelling than the xero ?
Hey Andrew! No, never tried JS Xero. But based on the dims and outline, it will feel like a proper high performance shortboard. The Mashup is like a hybrid fun board for small & medium size waves. I would love to try Sub Xero which would probably compete well with the Mashup. One of my followers in AUS has Sub Xero and he was happy to surf it in knee high waves.
@@SkipperSurfReview I'm from Sydney, Australia and have a xero and plasmic on order. The waiting game is killing me but I know it will be worth it
@@Roofusone_ yes, I would hold off! How big will be your Plasmic?
@@SkipperSurfReview 5ft8 stock dims. I'm 84kg and 5ft10.
@@Roofusone_ that’s perfect😁 Stoked for you! Hope it arrives soon!
Yewww,
Is it easy to catch wave with the mash up?
Thx
It is if you are in the right spot meaning the same spot if you were surfing a high performance shortboard. I didn't notice any advantage to get into the waves earlier. It doesn't have a glide like a proper fish for small waves.
Just got the 5’7 and took it out in 2ft and really mushy waves. It actually struggled a bit despite paddling amazing. Was catching everything but couldn’t generate any speed. More the waves fault than the board I would say. How have you found it?
Did you set it up at the quad or thruster? I found it working better as a quad in mushy/crappy waves.
@@SkipperSurfReview quad, to be honest the waves had hardly any power and weren’t forming well. I don’t think the board was at fault
@@chrisvandermeulen4579 Yes, it definitely needs more wave to go.. it's not a proper groveler!
What’s your update?
@@matthewjones7872 changed to a twin + trailer and it flies. Amazing in anything 2-5ft
I've got a seaside and a glazer as someone who's ridden all 3 would you say the mashup sits somewhere in the middle of the two ? I've been keeping my eye out for a Dominator 2 for something more shortboardy, but this is kinda appealing.
Hey Brenton! Yes, you can put the Mashup in between but I also think the Mashup can easily cover the same conditions that you would surf on the Glazer. It's more nimble and less packed with foam up front.
@@SkipperSurfReview Thanks Yury, this has definitely given me some food for thought. I love both the seaside and the glazer, they’ve definitely helped my surf progression. I’ll hopefully have a look at a mashup on the weekend, but may wait and try pick up a 2nd hand one at a later stage.
@@brentontaylor9191 I personally wouldn’t rush to get the Mashup in your case😁
Interesting comment about how this board doesn’t tilt forward on take off. I actually have the opposite problem with my Spitfire. I feel the nose lifts up and pushes me to the back of the wave and slow drown the drop too much. In your experience, what makes a board behave one way or another? Would a Seaside tilt forward more easily on take off? Thanks for your response in advance! You got a new subscriber now.
Hi Alejandro! From what you described, it usually means that the board either way oversized for you or you are not in the right spot meaning you start paddling too early and by the time, the wave stands up and you need to get those 2-3 extra paddles, you’re out of power. If you can send me some footage of your surfing, I can let you know what’s up. In terms of tilting.. In most cases it depends on the bottom contours, rails.. some boards get that sticky feel to the wave. I think the rails, bottom contours and foam distribution play a big role. The Seaside for instance, tilt very quick when the waves are steep, even it’s kinda wide. So it goes case by case. How big is your Spitfire and what’s your weight/height/level?
@@SkipperSurfReview thank you so much for your reply. My board is 5.11 33.5 litters. I’m 1.87 (6.1) and my weight is around 82 kg (180 lbs). I’d say I’m intermediate and I have no problem with padding. I surf a lot at the moment so I feel strong haha.
It would be awesome to send you some footage but I don’t have any at the moment. Where would I send it?
Again, thank you so much fire your reply and the awesome content you share with the surf community!
How did you find the volume in this board?? I’m debating between the 5’7-5’8. Great review btw.
I'm happy with the 5'8".. but I think 5'7" would feel less corky. I don't think it would change anything in terms of wave count :) If you don't surf in 5 mm wetsuit, 7 mm booties and gloves, go with 5'7" :)
@@SkipperSurfReview thanks mate 🙏
sounds like you didn't like it 🤔 I got that sense from looking at the board. Speak to js industries and see if they have a demo of the sub xero or something
I did like it. It was so easy to surf on waves with better shape. I wish it had a bit more glide in flat sections.
How about compared to the Glazer?
So, the Glazer is pretty beefy especially the rails. It works great from 3ft+ and you can draw long round turns with smooth transitions. I had 5’8” Glazer but I would ideally need 5’6” for the East Coast. It won’t pivot and go rail to rail as quickly as the Mashup. The Mashup will work better in smaller waves comparing to Glazer. Hope this helps🤙🏼
Yeup that’s exactly what I needed. Thanks man 🙏🏻
Do you surf with no wax?
Not really. I use 2" of Sticky Bumps Warm Water wax.
My two cents. You have overcooked it on volume big time. I am a bit of a kook but I have plenty of float and get into mushy waves nicely with a 5'8 and I am currently 6ft1 and 84kg.
Good for you! I wish I could go have more fun in lower volume boards!
You seemed to like the "Flat Earth" much better!?
I liked the Flat Earth. It was in size 5'10" and it felt much more than 33.4L. Really fun twin fin! If I had to go back to buy it again, I would go with the 5'8" or 5'9".
Do you think the mashup and flat earth overlap? Flat earth looks like it handle some more size? Great review!
@@michaelallsop9986 I think they do overlap a little bit in terms of conditions but not from performance perspective. Both boards have plenty of volume up front but I feel like the Flat Earth paddles much better (check out my review on Flat Earth to see how it worked in smaller waves). I was able to surf 1-2 ft waves with a little bit of push but it definitely needs 3ft+. to get going unlike the Mashup which will feel more nimble in smaller waves. The Flat Earth has more rocker and can handle bigger/hollow waves much easier. It's also a twin fin. You can put into Flat Earth the trailer to make it closer to a Thruster but I personally loved the natural feel of a twin fin with super cool tail slide that is controllable. You may be able to get that on the Mashup with the right fin set but it's questionable. Let me know if you have any questions.
