Great review as always. I have a dominator 1 which I love, I agree that the dominator 2 is very different. I think for WA conditions the D1 is better suited, the rail is lower and the board not as light... I think it works better in our punchy beach breaks that can get windy. I haven't really enjoyed the D2 as much, but now I feel like I should try it as a thruster...

Hey man! Been watching your reviews for a few weeks now and love seeing someone review boards in a variety of waves!
Was hoping you could help me out! I’m similar build/experienced as yourself and I’m after a new daily driver - having not got on well with my Haydenshapes Holy Grail I’m looking at either the Dom 2.0 (slightly put off by everyone recommending it as a quad set up over a thruster) JS Monsta box (seemingly one of your fav go to boards and I loved the older model, haven’t tried the 2020 one!) or the new JS Xero (can wait for you to drop that review soon!)
I’ve got a fish for small, fun days and a step up for bigger, better days but want something for shoulder high to overhead beachies etc

Nice review. I bought one about six months ago and I am really enjoying it. Could be a quaddie thing, but I didnt enjoy it as a thruster but like it alot as a quad fin. One of the best boards I've ridden in a long time to be honest. I have found it to be a litle soft (already got the foot wells in it) and a little slippery when it got a bit chunkier. great for us older blokes as it seems to paddle really well.

  • @bananaschmidt2173
    @bananaschmidt2173 10 месяцев назад

Hi wooly, thanks for the review!
I´m 6`1 and 86kg as you. 44 years old. I got a 6`2 x 21.5 x 44L Board from LSD called "the Tex". Large performer fins as quad.
I only can surf in France for 1-2 Weeks a year in France West cost in 2-6 feet swell.
I can duckdive, paddle and pop up on waves easily and go down the line.
    Here comes the problem:
It´s hard get the rails in the face of the wave to get some grip and gain some speed even with the large Fins. It feels like I´m drifting/floating on the wave/water instead of cutting in the water with the rails
    So I´m thinking of an D2 in 6`4 (41L) or 6´6 (44,4L).
    - I know for sure that 37L is way to small even in best conditions 41L is absolute minimum.
    - A Torq Fish with 6`6 x 21 x 39,6L was harder to paddle than my Tex, but started to feel too long.
    So what might fit better:
    - a 6´4 with the fear of having eventually not enough volume?
    - a 6`6 with enough volume but maybe beeing to long to fit into small waves? Or will the thinner rails and squash tail make it feel easy to maneuver?
Firewire recommends riding the board same size as the surfer. So it would be 6`1.
Is the board generally not suited for my abilitys?
    Cheers from Germany
ps: In case you have other suggestions for board models please let me know

    • @WoolyTV
      @WoolyTV  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi mate,
It sounds like you could be ok on the 6'4" but if your worried about the volume go up to the 6'6". It could feel a little long but it might give you the feeling you are chasing.

Hey Wooly, legendary reviews and great work on the channel. I'm stuck surfing trigg beach breaks (young kids, can't travel), what do you reckon goes better - JS Xero or Dom 2 as a daily driver for waist to head high trigg. I've got a Seaside and am very happy with it. Also got a Pyzel Stubby Bastard and Amigo for better waves. I'm keen on trying a more performance twin/twin + trailer, as I enjoy the Seaside with big raked keel twins (AM keels).

    • @WoolyTV

@@WoolyTV thanks heaps mate, much appreciated. Cheers also for answering all the comments!
The one thing that throws me off a bit is the high volumes people like to ride it in. If I'd go 3l more than my performance board, it would carry more volume than the seaside (and I know one size bigger in that board would be too much). Getting scary big there...guess at one size down 1.3l more volume should suit just fine.

U mention that the MB vs D2 are kinda similar range. Do u think D2 is slightly lower in the range? And the MB can handle more size? And which do u think it is higher performance? Easier to go vert or work in the pocket and handle steeper juicier surf? Appreciate your thoughts and dig your vids. Btw im also bigger guy also 6'2 215-220 intermed/ advance and my quiver already includes an older 6'4 38L MB that I like a lot. But been eyeballin the D2 as a poss replacement for the old mb if it might actually b an upgrade. If not then i would just stick with old MB and put the money toward a Monsta 2020 easy rider instead for 3-5 surf (and see if it can knock my Hayden Shred Sled out of that slot).

    • @WoolyTV

      Hi mate
The MB would def surf up to bigger surf better than the Dom and I think the Dom would grovel a little better. Both boards work well in the pocket. This could replace a MB in your quiver but you might be boxed in a little with the range. Saying that, I didn’t really ride the Dom in overhead surf so I’m not sure what it’s limitations are.

I'm 137lbs (62kg) and 167 (5'5) tall, 37 years old and level wise I'm in the middle of intermediate to advanced.
I'm afraid of getting the D2 on 5'6 (28L) and being too much volume, but it doesn't come on 5'5 and the 5'4 risks being too little (25.9L).
I surf in west coast of France, most part of the time on beach breaks, with average waves and choppy sections. Sometimes it can be overhead but it's like some surfs in a year.
What would you recommend? What would be better, the D2 5'6 (28L) or shall I go with a Phantom on 5'7 (26,7L). They say "foam is your friend", but I'm now riding a DHD Black Diamond (5'8 x 29.5L) and I feel it too buoyant.

Hi mate, I think it would be a toss up between the Sci-Fi and the Flat Earth. Its been a while since I did the Sci-Fi review but it did work in waves overhead and had plenty of drive. The Flat Earth was great in anything from waist high to over head.

@@WoolyTV I appreciate the feedback! Now I am trying to decide between the SciFi 2.0 versus sizing up my Cymatic.

Dylan does all the production and editing so I will have to ask him.

Hey mate, thoughts on riding this in indo? Nothing too heavy, small-medium bingin, ulus etc? Cheers!

@@WoolyTV I’d be looking to use it to complement my Rocket Wide (grovelling) on the east coast here for around head high, but as long as I can get in a cheeky 10 days in Bali on small-med surf it might be the go?

Nice ! How do you feel about the dominator 2 vs sci fi 2 to complement a small wave board ? Want something easy to ride in bigger waves than grovel waves

Have a look at the Slater FRK plus. It’s better in good quality waves than the 2 you’ve suggested

@@WoolyTV i was considering it, but i heard its not user friendly at all... not sure if its true ? it would be kind of my daily driver for good quality waves (waves in my area are really good most of the times, but im at best lower intermediate)

@@KC-ro9roit is user friendly, quite a lot of kooks running the model and they actually never surfed a hpsb before but for a shortboard it’s more user friendly. I prefer it than the Pyzel shadow. Otherwise sci fi 2.0 is better but none of those boards will go good over 5 feet

For small flat surf...... Rocket Wide
The Dom and MB would surf better in a bigger range of conditions (so if you only have one board).

  • @mrmr314

You surf better on all the Firewires than any other board. You are aware of that, yes? Not a fan of the "pulled down rails" but then we're bigger and heavier. You should show other guys surfing too, maybe the kid filming you? What you don't do is explain what the hell "Helium" or "iBolic" or "Thunderbolt" etc etc is and the differences. They're all variations on EPS boards, so what's the difference? We know Thunderbolt is the toughest and mimics PU well too. Then you need to tell us where the widest point is on each board (actually show us), and what differences each board has to the hackneyed single-to-double-concave thing so prevalent now. For example we think channels with flyers work better than concaves, with the channels being the actual concave but with the channel edges delivering "grip" and squirting the water out the flyers.

    • @WoolyTV

Again thanks for your view and input. In my opinion I surf the best on PU board in overhead surf. What you see on the RUclips channel is a bunch of boards I ride 3 to 5 times for the review. None of which showcase my best surfing as I’m just getting used to them and then I move onto the next board.
The other thing is I only film about 5 or 10% of my surfs.
In my opinion I surf the best on a very standard PU daily driver or a performance shortboard.
But that’s what I like, some people say I look good on twins (but I feel like a kook on them).
Anyway thanks for watching and here is another yewwwww and a Shakka for you🤙🤙🤙
