    Curious what your thoughts are on my dilemma -
    I have a 6'8" mid length, a 6'4 OG Flyer and I'm looking to get a fish/every day board for our usual 2-4 foot surf. Trying to decide between a Seaside at 5'10"-5'11" or a Mashup 6'0"-6'2"
    I'm 6'4 - 195lbs - surfing southern California waves that aren't hollow at all - mostly nice mushy reef breaks. Surfing Level - Intermediate + (can do bottom and top turns pretty well front side, not consistently back side)
    Looking for a daily driver that will allow me to get into maximum waves and progress my turns/snaps as much as possible. You obviously loved your seaside and then sold it, and now you have this. If you had to choose between the two, which would you choose and why for where I'm surfing/surfing level

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад +2

      Out of the two, given your level, wanting to progress turns and waves you're riding I'd go Mashup. The more streamline outline is definitely going to help push your turns more than the Seaside :)

    Love the reviews!! Loving the sound of the Mashup. Have you had any experience with the Rocket Wide (preferably squash)? Looking for a small wave performance board to progress my top to bottom surfing and turns soft weak waves. These two boards sounds like they do just that. Awesome review. I have a Ultra Average Joe and it just does not go. Its been frustrating so I just ordered a Mashup. I weigh 170, but with a full suit on, add 8-10lbs. I ordered a 5'10" but wondering if I should pull it back to a 5'9". I want a board that I can easily get into waves and has a great get-up and go. I would love it if you could share your fin specs. Thanks!

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад +3

      Glad it helped David! Hmmm you could probably get away with the 5’9 but if you’re surfing smaller, mushier stuff the extra bit of volume could be a good thing. I’m loving my 5’10 and it doesn’t feel bulky at all. Fin wise I’ve got the LZ Activators in the front with the Futures QD2 4.0 in the rear

  • @jblyth1

    Great review mate, love hearing your thoughts on these sticks! How does the Mashup compare to the Lost Evil Twin? I was JUST about to buy an Evil Twin (in large part due to your review as a small wave beast, yet versatile in larger conditions) until I just checked your Mashup review. I live in New England, so I usually surf super slow and mushy waist high beach breaks, but also charge overhead point breaks with howling offshore winds when the low pressures roll through. I want a board that can handle that range, and importantly, generate tons of paddle speed so I can get up on my feet early and start down the line. I'm 186 cm and 90 kg, above average surfer. I've never surfed anything other than PU boards before. Will a 6'4 (44 Liter) Mashup in EPS have the heft to drive through wind and get down the face on offshore days? Or is the 6'4 Evil Twin (43L) the better choice for this range of conditions? Thanks so much for all your insight!!

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  Год назад

      Glad you enjoyed the review! With your height and weight I would potentially suggest dropping down a little in size to maximise performance, especially on the Mashup, which you could boat out pretty easily. They do feel like very different boards though, so I'd say it really comes down to what fin setup you want - quad or 2+1 for the Mashup (although I still prefer quad) or twin fin for the Evil Twin. I would however say the extra weight in the PU build of the ET is going to handle your offshore winds a bit better, but I would also chuck the Dominator 2 into the mix if you're surfing the bigger side of things more often.

      @@StokedForTravel Hate to bother you with this question, but I'm coming from an Aloha Black Panda groveller which I ride in most conditions for the past 2 years. It's 5'10, 38.5L and I love it. I'm 6'2 and between 85-89kg, depending on the week! Surfing a few times a week, intermediate-advanced. Looking to surf it in Sydney beachies and some hollow point breaks, and a cheeky trip to Bali (although I have a 6'3 step-up too). I've heard with the helium you can go slightly on the low volume side, and the 5'10 Mashup is 35.5 and the 6'0 is 38.5 (with no 5'11 available in between!!!). What do you think I could lean towards? For context, I also have a 35.5L Stacey Snake Eyes and it feels way too small - but it's in EPS, not Helium. Thanks heaps!!!

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад

      @lhavenothingtosay hahaha that's always the tough decision! Based on your height and weight I'd say around 5'9 - but if you're at the lower level of intermediate some extra volume might be good too. What are you riding now as your go to board?

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад

      @lhavenothingtosay No worries! If you get on well with the Seaside at that size just go a size or 2 up for the Mashup. What I would say is dont just rely on volume - if you oversize a board for your height and weight you'll end up loosing the characteristics that make it fun. You'd be better off putting another board in the middle to push your skills to the right level :)

    Great review and helped me make a decision to get mine!
    My experience with the mashup:
    About me: height 1.75m / weight 72 kilos. mid 40's level: intermediate. I bought the 5.8 (32 liters) mashup. I am coming from surfing a mid length surfboard for the last 5 plus years. But I did previously ride shortboard when I was younger.
    Answers to some simple questions you surely have if you are thinking of buying this board (based on my experience):
    - Is the Mashup a good board overall: No it's not. it is a crazy good board!
    - I am in two mind between the seaside or mashup: The mashup can do all what the seaside does plus more.
    - Does it really surf well on small wave: yes but you still need to surf the unbroken part of the wave.
    What volume should I get:
    All the volume of that board is extremely well hidden. I recommended using the firewire volume calculator default values (for me it was 32 liters) and that is spot on. I can paddle no problem. and when surfing on flat section the board does not sink it just carries you along, and the volume is way enough to allow you to take heaps of waves.
    How does it handle, is it too shortboardish, does it feel too much like a performance shortboard?
    To be honest I am just an intermediate level surfer and I just had the best session I had in years with this board. not because of the waves but because that board feels like It reads you mind. You just want to go down line, that things just glide effortlessly cruising along. you want to do turns, cut backs or any radical manoeuvre it does so in a snap. I actually was able to do moves and turns I never did before in years of surfing (surely due to how light that board is). but really that thing feels like a flying carpet that does whatever you want. and best of all, you don't need to be a pro to surf it.
    To sum up: that board looks amazing, when walking around with it. it has all the volume needed to allow you to take tons of waves big or small and when you surf it you become kelly slater.

      @Craig Phillips Hey Craig, I replied yesterday but my reply has disappeared - perhaps because it had a link to the DVS Quad Keels I have in the Dom2.?
      I’ve had mine out in 2x head and it holds fine. I weigh around 100kg and the board is a 6’8. The high volume is perfect for me - I feel very confident taking off under the lip on big steep waves and in small waves the board skips across and generates lots of speed with a tick-tack. The quad keels are quite upright so they pivot very easily but the large area gives great hold. Even on a waist/shoulder high wave the board will go vert and come straight back down. It may be the medium rocker but if I want I can easily slide the fins out across the lip. I don’t know how it will go in stuff over 2x head but that’s not my most frequented size range 😂
      I bought some big raked quads for scary waves but I haven’t tried them out yet. Who knows, they might be great all round but I’m enjoying the board so much I’m reluctant even to experiment lol..,
      Hope that helps - I live in West Australia and surf between the capes in the Margaret River region.

    I was very much leaning towards a 6'6" Hypto Krypto FutureFlex but can't get one with a Futures set up in Europe anywhere. Getting it from the factory would take months and I've a few trips coming up that I want to have the board for.
    The other option would be a 6'6" Firewire Mashup, there's one for sale online that does have Futures. Am I mad going for a different board just because I don't want to deal with FCS II? The Mashup also has more volume so considering a 6'4"
    My typical session is with a thick wetsuit, usually a bit of wind unfortunately. I don't get out as much as I used to so want to get a high wave count and appreciate good paddle power, this board would replace my old 'fun board' that's 6'10" (with similar volume to the above two) that works surprisingly well in bigger surf too. I'm often packing the board for international trips also.
    Any thoughts on the above options? Would welcome your advice

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  2 года назад

      Hey Cillian, glad you're enjoying the reviews and happy days on sticking with the Futures! So the Mashup doesn't quite have quite a big range in terms of the larger size of things as the Hypto, but if you're not surfing about head/head high the Mashup would be my recommendation, turns WAY better than the Hypto so it'll certainly progress your surfing. I would definitely drop the size a little as it paddles really well and your dont want to oversize it.

    • @cillwal
      @cillwal 2 года назад +1

      @@StokedForTravel This is great info, cheers for that. There's still plenty of sessions over head here in Ireland so maybe the Hypto is the way to go for that.
      It's pretty much a trade off between Hypto with FCS and Mashup with Futures
      Really enjoyed your video on alternatives to Hypto also, unfortunately not a lot of those boards available to ship to Ireland in less than 1 month timeframe.
      Thanks for getting back to me

    Too much chattering at the start of your vids. Just get to the point. The pros on them are all tiny guys who weigh bugger-all. They change boards at a whim as per what the conditions are. Normal guys out here of course can't do that. The pros are NOT relevant to most surfers who typically are much bigger and heavier. Thunderbolt construction is superior to all the other "epoxy" and EPS setups. It's tougher and surfs more like a PU while retaining the liveliness. Apparently Firewire have bought the Thunderbolt tech off Tolhurst (or some of it)? You didn't really address how tough these Firewire boards are - both for home, then putting them on aircraft, motorbikes and boats.

    • @StokedForTravel
      @StokedForTravel  Год назад

      Indeed average surfers tend to be a bit heavier, but you just need to size your board correctly to balance that out - the pro references are a good way to see what the board is capable of in the right hands though and how far you can push it.
      I like the Thunderbolt tech on their bigger boards (like the Mid6, HI4 and Cherry Picker), but for things like the Mashup in smaller stuff the Helium is so much fun, really like the liveliness and flexibility. I've gone into more detail about the strength in a few reviews so kinda skipped over a bit on this one, but the blog delves into more detail about that if anyones keen. So good for travelling!
