Game of Thrones: How the 'Bells' Moment Should Have Gone

  • WARNING, MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR GoT 8x5.
    A quick edit of how I (and seemingly many others) would have personally preferred the Dany snapping scene go. I feel like her destroying the Red Keep after the Lannister army surrendered would have been shocking enough and made her scary without being too over the top and unbelievable for her character. There would still be civilian casualties, but she wouldn't be deliberately massacring them by the tens of thousands for no reason. Maybe she could even do a few strafing runs of fire on her way to the Keep, like she does in the show. But she would not meticulously burn the whole city down, in a seemingly endless rage (you'd think she'd get her anger out after burning a couple of thousand civilians?)
    To be clear as some people seem confused: I have nothing against the idea of Dany becoming Mad Queen and killing innocents as a concept. Honestly I was kind of looking forward to it. I'm sure George would do it well in his books (if he ever finishes them, which I honestly doubt at this point) and even D&D could have done it just fine, had they not rushed the show in the last seasons. The intention of the story is good, and the potential of that "messiah turns into a monster" story is great. And yes, Dany's arc has clearly shown her become more and more ruthless over the seasons, so there has been a slow build to this.
    What I do have a problem with is how the conclusion of that arc was executed. It felt like they had done steps 1 to 6 carefully and then skipped over 7 and 8 to rush 9 and 10. And when it's as big of a character development as this, you just can't rush it. It's why all the bad shit someone like Walter White does in the show Breaking Bad still feels believable, as we always understand his reasons and see how he slowly got to that point, even if we might disagree with his actions. This just wasn't the case with Dany.
    And honestly, this scene was just the boiling point for a show riddled with bad writing in its later seasons. It is not the reason I hate Season 8. It's just a scene with a cool idea done poorly, surrounded by mountains of shit. And the only reason I made this video is because it was something quick and easy to do.
    As a final note: If you liked how the last season was done, that's fine. This is just my opinion.
    All footage belongs to HBO. This video is for commentary purposes only.

      You don’t break the wheel ever. Where there is a power vacuum and opportunity, there will always be another asshole trying to control everything. The question is what is less bloody in the long run? Dozens of independent kingdoms all warring with each other constantly or a united realm where the enemy becomes corruption and internal strife? After multiple watches - I get it. Here’s my interpretation:
    Think back to when she took over (liberated) Mereen.. how the people welcomed her. They chanted “Mhysa” and wanted to touch her. Here, the people were screaming and crying. They were scared of her. She didn’t have their love and adoration.
    She even looks more upset when the bells go off. To me, it’s because the bells signify mercy. The people are asking for mercy from a conquerer. Not freedom from a savior.. which is what she thought she was.
    She lost two dragons, two friends, and most of her allies for this… for people crying for mercy FROM her and unable to see she was their salvation from Cersei (in her mind) .
    I never minded she went mad in the end. I loved her even then. But it was so rushed that it took a lot of rewatching to kinda piece together what was going on in her mind. At least, what I think was going on lol

    The scene in the series just made no sense whatsoever. A complete failure of writing. She was about liberating the people, and breaking the wheel, not killing the people. The only way this should have gone down is for her to go straight to the red keep and burn it to the ground. That’s the only way this could have made sense.

    • @baxakk7374
      @baxakk7374 2 года назад +9

      The point was that it's dangerous for one person to think he/she can be the liberator. Dictatorships rarely end well. It was a great idea, it just needed time to show how dictators become horrible people over time. I think this is why G.R.R. Martin can't finish the books, it's hard to execute the ending he wants, which is you either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

    • @ramotcontrol
      @ramotcontrol 2 года назад +5

      @@baxakk7374 that may be the point, but 7 seasons’ worth of character development for Daenerys was obliterated by this moment which had no lead-in. Strong, stable Dany suddenly had a “woman scorned” moment? Anyone can theorize as to why she did this; however, with good writing and execution it would have been crystal-clear that this was the only possible outcome, but the narration did not provide that.

    • @rtozier2011
      @rtozier2011 2 года назад +2

      @@ramotcontrol They should have made it clear that the people attacked her first, by saving Rhaegal's death until this battle - perhaps they would conquer KL bloodlessly only for the Cersei loyalists to swarm on him and tear him apart (taking advantage of his Winterfell wing injury) once they landed.
      That would have been a suitable parallel to the people's adoration she received in Yunkai, and would have reinforced the message that you can't base your decisions on your popularity.
      Also if she had just incinerated a crowd of a thousand or so Cersei loyalists and their children, partly in angry grief, partly because of her established rigid sense of justice, and partly as a deterrent against future attack, that would still have been enough to enrage Jon.
      SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 6
      *
      I also would have cut out the Tyrion/Jon scene entirely, so that Jon stabbing Dany would have come as a complete surprise to the audience, and given him more agency.

      (They rejoiced when good ppl were killed before). So Daenerys made a decision to teach them all a lesson. She couldn't rule over ppl who didn't want to be free.
      (Remember all through she gave free will to slaves and they chose their own freedom).

    it starts with the fact that (for no reason) in the battle for Kings Landing Drogon started to spit explosives instead of normal fire like he did in the battle against the night king and the entire series up to this point. It's a shame how they threw away character developement and storytelling for pure action and decided that Dany would burn everything to ashes because they were too lazy to think of a proper ending. I think Dany becoming a Mad Queen could’ve been a cool story, if done well, but I’d still rather have her as the hero. I think if it was done like it is in the video, she could’ve learned from her mistakes and still end up sitting on the Iron Throne as a just queen.

    Those who prefer this version forgot which show they were watching. Maybe it's because they came into GOT late or maybe they got used to D&D's popcorn GOT version but Dany ending it peacefully just wouldn't have made sense.

    • @nezfromhki
      @nezfromhki  2 года назад +6

      First of all, I started watching back in Season 4 (which was the last great season) and I've read all of the books. So don't assume I'm someone who came in "late" or who someone who enjoys popcorn writing (which in itself is a contradiction: you're defending their version while also calling it 'popcorn GOT"?)
      Secondly, how is this "ending it peacefully"? My aim was to create a more plausible option for the version of Dany they had written: she wouldn't just go mindlessly targeting civilians for no good reason, but would still attack even after the city had surrendered. She woulld still have done something dishonoroble, unnecessary and scary (as innocent civilians would have died as collateral damage) without it being so ridiculous and over the top. In my version, Dany would have obliterated the Red Keep, killing anyone inside it and people around it. I could not convey all of it as I would have liked because I was just making a quick edit using existing footage.
      My problem isn't the fact that Dany went crazy. It's not even the fact that she did what she did. It's more that the build up to it happening and everything around it was so poorly written and rushed that it feels forced. I feel like at least this version would have been a bit more reasonable and believable without sacrificing the arc they were going for: Dany becoming a tyrant.

    • @redplague
      @redplague 2 года назад +2

      @@nezfromhki I didn't assume anything. I included a conditional 'maybe' in my sentence as I didn't think my list was exhaustive. It did make me smile though when you protested at me making the assumption and then stated that you indeed came in late. Though you have read the books which probably gives you a better knowledge of the material than people who binged watched 5 or 6 seasons to catch up.
      It's not a contradiction at all. I don't consider the concept of 'the mad queen' to be popcorn in of itself. In fact there's every reason to believe that it would have happened in the books and I wouldn't have been surprised to see it there. There were enough hints and as I understand it GM gave D&D a rough outline of where the characters would end up. When I was talking about their popcorn style of writing I was talking about their 'that's cool bro' level of maturity with regards to plot. Such as their ninja turtles-girls fighting is cool sand snakes, their over reliance on the fake death scene, their incorporation of memes into the story etc.
      It's relatively peaceful. The vast majority of civilians are not burned to death and less chance of Unsullied and Northmen on the rampage. The destruction of the red keep could be argued was a legitimate military target and the civilians who were caught up in that 'collateral damage' (something accepted by governments even today!). Afterwards there are virtually no burnt bodies littering the streets, less chance of a tyrant's speech and I don't think Dany would have been stabbed to death by Jon. I'd call your version peaceful by comparison.
      I have a problem with the notion of Dany going crazy (it even says so on the wiki). She wasn't mad, her father was mad. He believed that he would die in fire and be reborn a dragon if memory serves. That's madness. If Tywin, Roose Bolton or Stannis had been on a dragon with that power I think they would have done the same thing. Were they crazy?
      Oh yes the series was definitely rushed, but I think her burning King's Landing to the ground was one of the least rushed things in the series with enough hints and foreshadowing to justify it For me it was more jolting what she did in Merreen. I also would have liked to have seen another season of Daenerys as a tyrant.

    • @nezfromhki
      @nezfromhki  2 года назад +1

      @@redplague Eh, I don't have the energy to argue or debate about a video I made 2 years ago that was never meant to get this much publicity. The last thing I'll say is that no amount of hinting or foreshadowing is a justification for rushed character development. Dany's whole deal was always that she wanted to help the poor, ordinary people, and she only did ruthless acts against people that were directly opposed to her. And she always had a reason for doing it, even if you could sometimed argue that it was not the best choice (like burning the Tyrells for example.) Her deciding to just slaughter a city full of civilians when she faced no more opposition is too drastic of a flip for her when the show did not have her (knowingly) kill innocent people prior to it.
      The scene we got would have been acceptable for me in a show where they took their time to truly tell her arc in a beliavable way instead of rushing the last seasons just because they were tired of writing it (as they could have gotten more episodes and seasons had they asked for it.) But that's not the show we got, and therefore the scene did not work, no matter how much it aligns with the original intention of the author.
      As cliche as it sounds: It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

    • @redplague
      @redplague 2 года назад +6

      @@nezfromhki A lot of people did a lot of bad things for 'reasons' so that means nothing.
      It's not true that she only did ruthless things against people who directly opposed her and even she did you gloss over this ruthlessness as if it's not character development building to what she did in the end. Would Ned Stark have indiscriminately crucified slave masters because they did it to children? She did this and it became clear afterwards that some (and maybe a lot) were not responsible for this but she didn't check and nor did she care. In her eyes they were culpable because they were part of a population that were not opposed to it. She used the same justification with King's Landing, that the people because they didn't rebel against Cersei were her enemy. She also had a huge insecurity about the fact that the people of Westeros didn't see her as a liberator. This was well established so there was character development, you just missed it.
      She also indiscriminately burned a person alive in the pyramid because she believed that some of the people were involved with the Sons of the Harpy. She didn't know who, she just picked a person at random.
      You gloss over the burning of the Tarly's but I think this deserves more consideration. I'm not talking here about the argument of killing vs not killing. I'm talking about the method of death. She chose to burn them alive. What Joffrey did to Ned Stark was less brutal. What she did there was closer to Ramsay flaying people. So again there was plenty of character development but you either missed it or forgot what the show was about.
      Add to all this, the death of two of her 'children', her knowledge of Jon's better claim to the throne and the insecurities and paranoia stemming from that and her best friend being decapitated in front of her eyes. How is this not enough character development to regard what she did as believable? It was one of the best handled arcs in the season and maybe the whole series as a result.
      You seem to have a very idealistic view of innocent vs guilty of good vs bad. This is what I mean when I say people have forgotten the shades of grey that the show used to be about rather than the Magnificent 7 style we got later on. On this matter you also seem to have missed a huge point of her dialogue in the last episode regarding that she knows what is good because she is good. It doesn't matter what the viewer thinks of as innocent or good at this point as Daenerys is operating on her own morality at this point. Is it Chaotic Neutral (I'm not an expert at D&D alignments so don't quote me on that)?
      I've already said that I agree with you that is was rushed and maybe Daenerys's actions would have had a little more padding before and after, but her arc was definitely the least rushed (apart from her death) and most deserved.
      I do regard the journey as more important that then destination. Tell that to all the people who say that GOT was ruined because of the ending.
