Loved that in the books, the Unsullied had to pick a different name every single day. They don't even own one. And when Daenerys free them, they decide to keep the name they choose that day😢😢😢
I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but even though some of them, especially Grey Worm, decided to keep their names, most Unsullied chose new ones. Daenerys found some of the choices really curious. edit, found it: One of the first things Dany had done after the fall of Astapor was abolish the custom of giving the Unsullied new slave names every day. Most of those born free had returned to their birth names; those who still remembered them, at least. Others had called themselves after heroes or gods, and sometimes weapons, gems, and even flowers, which resulted in soldiers with some very peculiar names, to Dany's ears. Grey Worm had remained Grey Worm. When she asked him why, he said, "It is a lucky name. The name this one was born to was accursed. That was the name he had when he was taken for a slave. But Grey Worm is the name this one drew the day Daenerys Stormborn set him free." *Daenerys IV, ASOS*
@@triforceninja13 Have you not watched?. She told them they can leave else they can fight as free men. If they wanted to leave no one would harm them was the promise. In a moment they become glorious, had respect and could live as free men starting with choosing name
Everybody saying Daenerys was always mad and what she did was bad, I watch her scenes 5 years later and I still think she was gorgeous while doing that! 😍
After many more lessons, you will notice that she makes a lot of mistakes. She drops entire words, she mixes up letters, and she uses a lot of wrong grammatical forms 😢 However, you won't really learn that on Duolingo, you will need to look at the real grammar.
@alexandernoe1619 funny enough, I think that her grammatical mistakes work perfectly for the character. She speaks valyrian, but is unclear of who taught it to her. In House of the Dragon, it's taught to the family by the maesters and reinforced by the older Targaryens speaking it. What would eventually be passed down is a language very different from what would be spoken on Valyria before the doom. It's my guess that by the time Dany is even born, the valyrian they speak in westeros is already broken and grammatically incorrect. The same way that English has changed over the course of 300 years, the same would happen to valyrian. So when Dany somehow learns it, either through what little viserys would have known and during her time in Pentos, it would have been impossible to know the language perfectly and accurately in the same way the people in essos or even those 300 years ago on valyria would spoken it.
This is not the first time that I see this "joke" so I just checked if it was only a joke or not and I'm shocked that High Valyrian is actually a language taught on Duolingo. 🤯🤣
@@jessicalyons6577 Yes, that is perfect for the character and regards the actress the medical condition she was suffering would have made it very difficult to learn a made up language like this
There seem to be a lot of us that thought that _"(Valyrian Subtitles)"_ meant that there were such as English Subtitles to the Valyrian she was speaking. We would be wrong about that. I can but speculate. Perhaps she doesn't want us reading subtitles - but watching Emilia Clarke so beautifully speaking Valyrian. If you watch this - unless you speak Valyrian - that IS what you will be doing. And - Emilia Clarke - does an excellent job of it. .
People like me learning High Valyrian on Duolingo are very happy to find a video like this without subtitles. It greatly helps to make progress in understanding the spoken language. You can find on David Peterson's wiki the full texts in High Valyrian and English translation
Nope, she was consumed by power, became greedy and thirsty of power. She became a mad queen in the end die to her personal at greedy ambitions. Poor the people trusted her, yet in the end most of them died because of her. She never serve her people, yes she gave them liberty and treated fairly but she failed to lead them in a good way. She used her people for her ambition and revenge.
In Season 5, they recycled a lot of Valyrian phrases. In the scene where she has her dragons burn and eat one of the masters, she first says sentences she from the speech she gave when she executed one of the former slaves after he murdered a master (compare 9:10 and 10:36) In the second part of her speech, she used the speech she gave when she and her army first came to Mereen's walls (compare 5:55 and 11:37)
Perhaps as punishment, they should be forced to work pro bono on a project produced by Harvey Weinstein, starring Kevin Spacey and co-written with Bill Cosby. It’ll be torture to all of them, but between Spacey’s acting, Cosby’s comedic talent and Weinstein’s editing, D&D’s commitment issues can be covered and we’d all get a great movie to watch 😅
No, she always speaks High Valyrian. She occasionally uses one word of a derived form of Valyrian in a sentence (for instance "buzdari" in "Zaldrīzes buzdari iksos daor"), but this is very rare. On the other hand, she understands other forms of Valyrian. When she talks with Grey Worm, she speaks High Valyrian and he speaks Astapori Valyrian. But she always and only speaks High Valyrian in the show.
Even Gemini cannot translate to or from High Valyrian, because the corpus of texts is insufficient (I asked him). Chat GPT pretends being able to do it, but gives totally aberrant translations. So the only way is to learn it ;-)
She just gave them commands like forward march. Since she was n the city she had been using an interpreter that she really didn’t need. Slave master after securing the deal for the dragon found out she knew how to speak Valerian. Then she told her new army to kill all the masters
It just makes me laugh every time I’m reminded that D&D actually thought this plotline would make sense to any viewer with a functioning brain. She waged her promised war and they acted shocked when some of them even ridiculed her for her naivete of keeping citizens away from harm at first. Let’s make them claim the fear of mad queen curse. She’s gone insane after cersei hung her only best friend. It’ll make sense. Like yeah, we got a fatherslayer, a serial killer, and a pathological liar here developing hero complex within days. Sense it will make. Thanks d&d.
She should have stayed and served her people in Essos. Those people believed in her, yet she betrayed a sacrificed their lives for her personal and greedy ambitions. So sad.
If you turn on "Latin" subtitles, you will get the phonetically correct version, easier to read than the Valyrian. But also having the English translation across the screen throughout (as it originally was in the show) would have been very nice.
