    I was making 5.50 an hour when I filmed this. OT was a whole 7.75! Rent was like 275 car payment 195... Take home was about 375 from a full time job every two weeks... So yeah, 80 dollars was something to film and oggle. I finally did get it, but it was with that OT.

    by the time i owned a genesis i was 5 years old, it was 1995, and all of the games were no more than 30 dollars brand new. It was a great time, and it still is. Best console era to date.

    Toys R Us used to be so mind blowing when I was a kid. Walk down the isle and drool at the entire wall of games. Anyone remember that show where the winners wore a velcro suit and stuck games to themselves?

    I remember being a Toys R Us as a kid in '97. Everything was mysterious and my senses were heightened from the excitement of being there. I bought most of my games used from game stores but I think I had just gotten a Toys R Us gift card. I bought Toy Story for the Genesis because somehow, I learned that it had speech synthesis (I wanted a game that could "talk"). I just remember the Saturn was out and it was weird and looked like something I could never afford. As a matter of fact I got the Genesis in the first place because my mom's (who was a heroin addict) best friend (the city bus driver) felt so bad about how poor we were and how my Atari 2600 from Goodwill had just broken down that she gave us her son's old Genesis since he had just gotten a PlayStation. It was surreal being poor but I would not give it up because I learned to appreciate older or more obscure systems for the time.

    A subject overlooked and forgotten, that all carts where not made the same. I remember reading 8 megs! EIGHT of them! And the magazines would go on and one about the massive size of the game. Which made it a must have... at the time.

    If anyone is gawking at that $79.99 price tag, keep in mind that after you factor in inflation that same game would have cost over $145 today. Remember that if you ever start to think that games are expensive these days.

    These were the best times....to me 1988-1998 is really the golden era....the days when I could spend forever in the videogame section watching the previews on the kiosks, looking at all the tickets and displays. I didn't have a magazine subscription to anything until the late 90's so going to the store was the only way to see new games back then....every year the innovation grew and grew. It's a shame the time machine does not exist.

    Dude, I don't know why, but this is SO awesome. To see a home video from 1990 on the era of old technology that then was NEW technology.
    "Mommy, please buy me Alex Kidd!"
    "Daddy, I want to get Shinobi for Christmas!"
    As short as it is, thank you so much (gregorysharp) for taking me back to the past. It's really beautiful lol.

    I wouldn't even know where to start! I have about 200 VHS tapes with random gaming news from TV and stuff I shot with my old Sony camcorder.
    I started recording some old arcade games in the late 80's, but I felt a bit weird about it and stopped. I wish I didn't care about what other people felt back then!
    I have a bunch of game commercials too, but they are on SVHS and I don't have a working deck. All things I need to look into ASAP!
    Thanks for inspiring me with this video. :)

    Wow I remember spending countless hours staring at the game wall in Toys R Us… in the next aisle over, the consoles were behind glass cases and the hang tags up above. Like you mentioned, after paying for a game at the register you had to bring the slip over to the corner of the store, which was walled off with a small window, like going to the currency exchange! Then, the guy manning the "game cage" would pull your game off the wire racks and hand it off to you. wow, takes me back big time.

    @AlirazaVideoGames the camera was about a foot long six or so inches tall... Meaty looking with a shiny Sony lable on it. It cost about $1,499.00 or so in 1989. for roughly 180 lines of resolution. Upscaled in this video of course.

  • @robintst
    @robintst 12 лет назад +4

    I think what some don't realize looking back at this is that the higher prices usually were dictated by manufacturing costs. Any cartridges with a higher storage capacity or custom chips cost more to make and the costs were always passed on to the consumer. The popularity or demand for the game played a factor as well. For 1990, $80 sounds about right for an 8 Megabit Phantasy Star II cart that also had a 110-page hintbook and map. Heck, I paid $100 for the 24 megabit Phantasy Star IV in 1995.

  • @JimHawkwind03411
    @JimHawkwind03411 11 лет назад +1

    And to add on to that:
    Phantasy Star IV (24 megabit + battery backup) and Virtua Racing (16 megabit + SVP chip) were the most expensive Genesis games, retailing for $99.99 when they first came out.

  • @BlackKnightJedekai
    @BlackKnightJedekai 11 лет назад +4

    Phantasy Star II - $79.99. I remember paying $69.99 for the CARTRIDGE ALONE in 1994. It's still pretty damn expensive if you want the box and goodies.
    Best. JRPG. Ever. (Also, Square ripped off Aeris' death from it, too. No, you can't argue. It's blatant fact.)

    @KomicTurtle True. But, I was trying to prove a point. We grew up having to pay $60-80 for a game. Gamers today are so lucky that it's not funny. That's why when I see a game I want, I don't hesitate or bitch about the price. I'm just so tired of seeing younger people these days complain that they had to pay $60 for a game, especially when they have things not available to us back then....like reviews, editorials, and rentals.....

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEESSSSSSSOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEE I love those old cards. It's The Sega CD boot up music - Specifically it's the from the ver. 2.00 bios which was used in the top loader version AFIK. The front loader version had a different melody and the logo's bounced around more. -- For bonus points I'm also pretty sure that's Ghouls'n Ghosts playing in the background during the pan. 3rd stage. Possibly from the attract demo which features the cpu grabbing two bonus point things before getting turned into a duck. WHY DO I REMEMBER THAT!?

  • @JimHawkwind03411

    The majority of Genesis games back in 1990 were 4 megabit carts. Phantasy Star II was a 6 megabit game w/ battery backup to save your games.
    Ghouls 'N Ghosts was 5 megabits.
    Strider, Genesis' first 8 megabit game, sold for $79.99 when it first came out.

  • @KazumaPrime

    I've been looking everywhere for some sort of image or video of an aisle from a retail store from the 90's that had the tickets that you took to the front desk in the electronic department for your game, mainly Toys R Us. Missed that sort of thing. My memory might be off a bit, seeing as I was only maybe 5, 6, or 7 at the time, but I think ours were in the laminated slips, similiar to what you'd see for the bikes. That system seemed to work better than today's glass cases.

    People always seem to whine about game prices, but I remember getting Star Fox 64 at Toys R Us back when I was ... hell if I know. Seven or eight, and it was $60+. People complain that games are $60 now, but really, they've never been cheap. It is stupid that the prices are so high given that they're discs (and sometimes digital) and not cartridges, but that's the price you pay for entertainment -- and inflation. Nice video. I was born in '91, but it looked pretty much the same in the mid-90's.

I had the SNES tg16 and genesis and bought tons of games from there like sonic 2 sonic 3.

    Yes, minimum wage I think was 4.25 US dollars an hour. And if you openned it and it sucked you where stuck with it. No store to trade it in. You could sell it at a yard sale or when you sell at a Flea Market. But overall, it sucked.
    I'd get my mother going in there raging to get my money back. Worked just a couple times.

    Oh yes, definitely!! It was the largest game at the time, and producing large games at the time was expensive, especially an RPG game that size. I've been playing this game for a week, and still have a lot more to go, and it is certainly one of the greatest games out there! Most Genesis games could be easily beaten in one sitting, but this game is quite different, and used a lot more space than the average game, thus the price increases.

You could see systems and games in those reinforced windows, sometimes going BACK to the game aisle because you saw that something was just released. @TheChaos5000 to, and you can basically get a copy of Fear 3 for less than $20 now, and it hasn't even been released a year ago, and that is partly because the material used to make games nowadays is so much cheaper than what they used back then, but I really hope cartridges comeback, because the cost of memory has gone down a lot in 20 years, and it would be a great way to ship games ever since they are more reliable and are not ruined by mere scratches, cartridges FTW!!! :)

    It was expensive back in the day because they are using "CARTRIDGES", which were expensive in itself. Same goes for N64 games- they were more expensive than PS1 games because they were using cartidges, whilst PS1 games we commonly cheaper since they used discs instead.
