Oh man, I miss these things. Really intriguing how they could have GameBoy displays on a TV well before the Super GameBoy ever became a thing, but it was only exclusive to those retail displays.
In toy shops and department stores full of hyperactive kids playing video games, being able to stop the little twats from turning the volume up was very important.
@@gwishart Hell it still is to this day. There's a reason why the volume on these is still controlled to the point where they were even eliminating IR remote control in the mounted TVs when kids started getting phones with IR blasters.
I remember this gameboy display, it was so mysterious, everyone wanted to see what was on that small screen, you had to get very close above the shoulder of the player. This was my first console. Had a great time with marioland. You couldn't save and the console was powered with 4 AA batteries, so finishing a game was the best feeling for sure. It teaches you perseverance and patience.
VirtualBoy_gaming they had nine years to do it and failed to before the 3DS family effectively left the market. Japan did have 3DS Stations that worked like display kiosks, but those have been discontinued
I honestly think that’s just a nostalgic talking. I’m someone who is born in the middle of the 90s but my childhood was for the most part in the early 2000s. And in my memory that was the best times. I know my parents say the same thing for back in the 80s. I think it comes down to the more innocent time of your childhood where you’re having fun with your friends but basically no responsibilities.
@@Faceplay2 Or the fact that there was no social media or cell phones, so people actually communicated, and did stuff like go to the movies and things like that
@@VashStarwind But that’s the thing when I grew up we did have all those things. Facebook blew up when I was in junior high so my space was already popular before that. the IPhone came out and decently affordable when I was a sophomore in high school. But we went outside we went to high school parties we went to concerts we went to the movies. I think there’s an honest misunderstanding of generations. We simply did things a little differently. Like for instance I grew up in Arizona so we had dirt bikes and we would go off Roading we just happen to have cell phones with us as well for communication purposes. We would have sleepovers with our closest friends but we would bring our phones with us. And just like people from 10 years prior we would also bring our game devices and play video games late into the night it’s not like we just kept our face in our cell phone lol.
@@Faceplay2 Yeah thats the thing, you guys DIDNT grow up with that stuff your whole life, you got to highschool AND THEN that stuff became popular. Now that kids have grown up LITERALLY their whole life with smart phones and social media, they stopped going out and doing things like movies, book stores, game stores, toy stores, wherever. Its totally different now especially with the kids that dont know what life was like before all those things existed. They dont even know that people used to have to go knock on other peoples door, just to see if they were even home lol. Fb used to be a good thing the first few years it came out, it was cool. Then they got the idea of taking over the whole internet and it turned to shit after that.
@@VashStarwind I guess that’s a good point. My first cell phone I had I was probably like 11 years old but it was just a emergency cell phone so I could call my family if I got lost or so they could call me if I was out and about. I grew up in a decent suburb so it wasn’t uncommon for parents to drop us off to like the movie theater and stuff so we had a cell phone so we could call her parents to get picked up since we were that age. But again it basically didn’t do anything.
if they survived they'd be worth a lot to retro games collectors. imagine having a shelf load of game carts and then having the retail demo units there so it's like youve got your own video game store? i guess most of them would have probably been dumped though, who would have known these things would eventually be collectible
nintendo told retailers to DESTROY all units, not to sell them nor ship them back so legallly that is what happened. a few employees took some home quietly...and those ended up on ebay today.
Lol no. They had to send them back to the distributer, Nintendo still owned those, they didn't just give them to retailers or nothing. I know because I worked at HHgregg in high school. We set them up...etc and at some point had to pack and send them back. The ones on Ebay or that were ever sold were where they would liquidate them from the warehouse at auctions. Whoever originally bought them then sold them around and of course they eventually end up on Ebay and whatnot.
Yep and 80s as regular nintendo came out in the 80s though and was awesome. It came out when I was 2 in 1985. Me and my brothers played it all the time in 1988 and 1989 threw the early 90s. Especially Punchout and Metroid.
@@SSJfraz Eh, they sometimes are and sometimes aren't. They really care about the quality of their games, but they are also really bad with online stuff. They only recently learned that their creator's program was shit. And Switch Online is still shit, and NES Online is even worse. They're good overall, but need to become better. They're certainly better than a lot of other gaming companies. They HAVE improved in some ways, though. Like, ending the creator's program.

@@StarwindAmada1 I'm not trying to be offensive, but your response of "I'm gonna kick your ass" is the funniest response to a dick RUclips comment I have ever read, and the fact that the argument started because of him making fun of your desire for rubber gromits makes it even better! And the fact that this video could ever cause anyone to get pissed at anyone to the point of wanting to kick their ass makes it EVEN better!! Haha! Again, no offense intended, but this video is like, the most innocuous thing I have ever watched, so I find it funny that it could result in somebody saying, "I'm gonna kick your ass."
It's too bad there hasn't been an adapter/ cord made that plugs the gameboy video output directly to a TV, without the need for a super Nintendo! Think I'm gonna start checking the web for that just in case.
I think the reason he says "I like the volume up REEEEEAL LOOOOOUD!" is because Nintendo was using the slogan "Play it Loud!" through out most of the 90's.
Back in the day I was trying to decide weather to get a snes or genesis. It was a BIG decision man… I played UN Squadron on the arcade stand up. I knew it was coming to snes, so my decision was made.

Thank you for this video, very informative. Now I'm ready to go to my work that exists in the 90's and crank that cabinet volume up reaaal high after opening that cabinet with an MM101 key.
Nope. It was how us 1980s and 90s kids got some games to work properly. These carts can somethings not work if you don't clean it or set it in right. I recall the "blowing into your cart" technique that sometimes it works, but it is better to just get a q-tip with a little alcohol and swip it over the reader inside where the game connects to the console. I also recommend doing this to clean the inside of the console. Always use alcohol or alcohol based cleaners like Windex to clean your systems. Water takes longer to dry and will damage the system.
I remember some cruise ships (Silja Line I believe) had NES displays like these with various games you could play. We also used to have a video game store in my home town, where you could try the games (NES, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, Master System) before you bought them, but they didn't use any fancy displays like these.
Wow, I remember the Super NES display. I really enjoyed watching this instructional retail video. It's so awesome how people uploaded preserving these vintage training videos.
I mean u joke but that's still how most cabinets work thing is almost no stores use cabinets anymore and just use a tv the sound in these machines was never meant to be changed more than once realistically also it stopped random people from changing the volume without the store owner knowing so there was no point in having any kind of regular buttons or knobs
This is so cool to see these types of videos. It's like going back in time. I love seeing the systems because they look so new like the Game Boy. It looked very shiny for some reason lol.

I actually thought this was a joke video made as a parody of 90s instructional videos.
Lol me too, with those 80's filters

man I love the 90's
They had it all
these were the best years ever. I feel sorry for the kids now. they don't even realize what they missed out on. the 80s and 90s were a great time to grow up
As a 82 born i agree ;)
What a horrible hell you’ve left for us

Oh man, I miss these things. Really intriguing how they could have GameBoy displays on a TV well before the Super GameBoy ever became a thing, but it was only exclusive to those retail displays.
Seems like volume was a really touchy thing back then
In toy shops and department stores full of hyperactive kids playing video games, being able to stop the little twats from turning the volume up was very important.
@@gwishart Hell it still is to this day. There's a reason why the volume on these is still controlled to the point where they were even eliminating IR remote control in the mounted TVs when kids started getting phones with IR blasters.
@@TheDemocrab lol I use to go to sixflags and use my note 4 to turn off tv's
And on the last one even the customers could turn up the volume really high if they wanted to (and if they know where the volume wheel is).
a lot of stuff used pretty finicky, shitty potentiometers for volume control
I remember this gameboy display, it was so mysterious, everyone wanted to see what was on that small screen, you had to get very close above the shoulder of the player. This was my first console. Had a great time with marioland. You couldn't save and the console was powered with 4 AA batteries, so finishing a game was the best feeling for sure. It teaches you perseverance and patience.
For some reason I always come back to this video and watch it again
Same
For me...I just download these and other classic Nintendo Demonstration videos off of RUclips to watch on my phone whenever.😆
The way they rigged up that gameboy to a tv screen. They don't make in-store handheld stations like they used to. That's awesome.
It'd be so cool if the 3ds had tv kiosks
VirtualBoy_gaming they had nine years to do it and failed to before the 3DS family effectively left the market. Japan did have 3DS Stations that worked like display kiosks, but those have been discontinued

I miss being a kid in the early 90’s. The best decade ever.
I think he was “really high” when he made this lol

no, just a regular american sales guy.

+UraKn0x looooooooooool
+UraKn0x Lol I noticed that too he didn't even lock it :D
wonder what happened to all those displays
Jake built a house out of them to live in when his bosses figured out nobody on Earth actually needed his services.
The NES one at 6:55 prolly got stolen because he didn't lock it up
if they survived they'd be worth a lot to retro games collectors. imagine having a shelf load of game carts and then having the retail demo units there so it's like youve got your own video game store? i guess most of them would have probably been dumped though, who would have known these things would eventually be collectible
nintendo told retailers to DESTROY all units, not to sell them nor ship them back so legallly that is what happened. a few employees took some home quietly...and those ended up on ebay today.
This is cool, the 90s had such awesome stuff.
Yep and 80s as regular nintendo came out in the 80s though and was awesome. It came out when I was 2 in 1985. Me and my brothers played it all the time in 1988 and 1989 threw the early 90s. Especially Punchout and Metroid.

90s tech was doing the edgy arcade aesthetic.
Nintendo, especially back when this was filmed, was such a genuine company. This is some of the most wholesome content on RUclips.
Nintendo still is
@@donacarmenmorales8806 It quite clearly isn't. They fuck their own fans over at every turn now.
You mean the company that tried to put Blockbuster out of business for renting their games?
No they weren't, the way they treated 3rd parties was pretty bad. No company is wholesome, and they don't care about you, like all companies, all they care about is money.

And the fact that this video could ever cause anyone to get pissed at anyone to the point of wanting to kick their ass makes it EVEN better!! Haha! I would never change my time with these games with growing up with a PS5 and Call of Duty. Today’s kids will never understand it.
I always wanted one of those Gameboy Displays b/c the pic was so lousy and hard to see on normal GB lol
It's too bad there hasn't been an adapter/ cord made that plugs the gameboy video output directly to a TV, without the need for a super Nintendo! Think I'm gonna start checking the web for that just in case.
It's called HDMIboy
I actually know someone who owns the exact model shown in this video
Be sure to adjust the contrast before you say such things! (I am joking)
I saw this video once where a guy named ben heck modified a gameboy and attached it to a tv
I think the reason he says "I like the volume up REEEEEAL LOOOOOUD!" is because Nintendo was using the slogan "Play it Loud!" through out most of the 90's.
Why is finding the volume on all these things so difficult
So the little runts can't fuck with it.
KiloByte Why would it be such a problem if they could just control the volume?

if you look at the one at 2:54 , I've got one of those displays in my attic and the gameboy still works.
I remember playing the Snes for my first time at a video game store that had displays like this. Fell in love instantly
Back in the day I was trying to decide weather to get a snes or genesis. It was a BIG decision man… I played UN Squadron on the arcade stand up. I knew it was coming to snes, so my decision was made.
My god I wish places like this still existed. 0.0
+NESSNESMASTER I know all we got is stupid gamestop now. I miss when we had cool displays like those that gameboy display looked awesome with the built in screen.
I know of one in Bonita springs FL called "8 bit Hall of Fame"
Got up to 2 minutes before i realized this video wasn't meant for customers.
This is awesome. 😎👍 I could watch this guy explain the mechanics of our childhood consoles for hours. Thank you took me back in time. This room use to be how Game Stop was. Now GameStop doesn't even display or showcase consoles anymore. Nor does it sell the original NES or SNES games anymore. 🙄
Let me guess, he likes they volume up REAL high?
I remember when I was a kid i use to go to these places to play video games I loved this days.
Bro.. Watching this has brought back so many memories walking into electronic stores as a kid growing up in the 90s w all the screens everywhere connected to my favorite systems. Id kill for one of these things man im tellin you. Thank you for uploading this.
That last kiosk was mindblowing. Never seen one of those before not even in stores as a kid.
God damn even Nintendo's training videos are fun and whimsical :3
Jake still has nightmares about the displays... They haunt him at night... "Turn me up really loud Jake... You know you want to..."
I wish I could've visited these Nintendo stores back in the day, they look so awesome. I was born in the wrong year.
They were awesome. It was the best.
I always say I was born ten to twenty years too late for my hobbies.
Thank you for this video, very informative.
Now I'm ready to go to my work that exists in the 90's and crank that cabinet volume up reaaal high after opening that cabinet with an MM101 key.

only if you keep watching random youtube videos instead of studying
I am a teacher dude and yes I am still studying.
BregandoAlSistema highly doubt a teacher says "dude" and why would you say am I going to work there when you're already a teacher ?
I am a modern teacher bro. Hahahaha. Im just 25. If you like I can send you my resume.
BregandoAlSistema No need for that, just making sure
I love how they make something that's so simplistic and primitive look so complicated that it needs a step by step instructional video
Does anyone else start twitching when he takes the games out and puts the same exact game back?
I can't stand it when people put the same game back on after just removing the disc or in this case cartridge.
Almost like Billy mitchell, BOOM!
No. Because it’s just a training demo for retailers.
To be fair thats the best way to fix a game if it isnt playing correctly. Its way more effective than blowing into the cartridge.
I remember some cruise ships (Silja Line I believe) had NES displays like these with various games you could play. We also used to have a video game store in my home town, where you could try the games (NES, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, Master System) before you bought them, but they didn't use any fancy displays like these.
I miss the 90s of video games :((
Wow, I remember the Super NES display. I really enjoyed watching this instructional retail video. It's so awesome how people uploaded preserving these vintage training videos.
Glad to hear someone from that actual era call it the "Super NES" not the "SANES" like kids do today.
im gonna Grab A Screwdriver To Turn The Volume Up On My Ps4 Thanks
I mean u joke but that's still how most cabinets work thing is almost no stores use cabinets anymore and just use a tv
the sound in these machines was never meant to be changed more than once realistically also it stopped random people from changing the volume without the store owner knowing so there was no point in having any kind of regular buttons or knobs
Don't forget your MM101 key

It took me a few minutes to realize this was real and not a modern remake/parody.
This is so cool to see these types of videos. It's like going back in time. I love seeing the systems because they look so new like the Game Boy. It looked very shiny for some reason lol.
I spent so many hours playing these in stores when mom was out shopping. Good times indeed :)
Mom always knew where me and my brother would be.
Man I would love that 3 system tower in my house.
Man i wish we never progressed past 16 bit gaming. Those were the days. I will forever miss them.
This makes me so depressed. The 90’s were such an amazing time. I was born in 96 so I didn’t really get to experience any of it. Look at that game store. So amazing and looks like the coolest museum ever.
Things were definitely different, in many ways much better and I miss it, but we have the power to make things even better if we work together.
I was alive for the 90s. Trust me it was actually pretty average, not every store was like that video and most the time they pretty crap.
Kakap0 I actually had several friends from around the world in late 97+ on some primitive chat rooms. Back when chat rooms were fun and not just trash. Sometimes the whole getting in touch with someone in town could be a fun adventure.
