    This is a Blockbuster training video from 1990 (notice all of the VHS tapes). It runs around 16 minutes so I split it into two parts. I can't believe we actually had to watch these.
    I hope you enjoy it! :)

    • @fanzhang5568

      Eh, the video is actually pretty solid basic sales technical. You need to know your product, listen to your customer, understand their needs, and find creative solutions with your products. It’s just retail without good commission is just not worth the effort. This girl doesn’t seem to know her products and wasn’t really paying attention to customer’s issue. Maybe I am old but everything the video was saying was pretty justified. It honestly come down to pay and effort.

    • @wadethesladewilson6753

      @@fanzhang5568 No she was going her job as expected but the video wanted her to be pushy. Blockbuster like most other failed companies pushed for aggressive sales tactics from their employees but didn't pay them for it. It's impossible to know every actor or every crew member to every movie. This video suggests if you learn such information then you could push more content. Now it is a good idea to have some knowledge but better to have a reference to fall back on. Personally I felt this girl was doing a great job but the boss kept finding more and more issues with what she was doing. Hell most my memories from Blockbuster was their limited selection, ridiculous prices, pushy sales tactics and employees who hated their job.

    For most of my life we had three major video rental stores in my hometown, Block Buster, Hollywood Video and Hastings. At one point when I was pretty young I remember one or both of my parents having an account with all three of them. We honestly used Hastings way more than the other two but sometimes the other two might have a better selection at that time. In my town Hollywood Video was the first one to bite the dust, they went when I was around 16ish in 2004, Blockbuster was next and held out until around 2008 or 2009 before they sank and Hastings held out until just a couple of years ago.
    We truly lost something from this era, it was a family affair for us to make a night of going and spending an hour at Hastings looking at stuff to rent, it may have been less convenient than the Netflix and Hulu we have today, but it was one of those little experience's you take for granted because you think naively it'll always be that way but one day...It'll change. I will always be thankful to have the memories of those evenings with my family.

      amazingabby25 You have to realize that the VHS player dictates the quality of the playback. The quality of the VHS tape. It's physical quality also will drive the quality of the presentation. Magnetic tape media degrades fast and doesn't like to lay on top of itself. As technology changed I change with it as was about to transfer my VHS to hard drives. My converted video collection is perfect without any pop, clicks, or distortion from bad tracking. The only difference is the aspect ratio is smaller than by today's standards. VHS wasn't bad at the time. I know for a fact that most people didn't know how to archive and increase the VHS shelf life. In the end I used my VHS for computer backups before we hard terabyte HDD's. There was software on OSX that allowed you use magnetic tape for backup. I got into the game and worked on what later became known as secure digital memory storage, aka SD cards.

      GrapesseparG I was getting films off the internet to. Speak for yourself normal person. VCDs were a thing. We used Real Player and Windows Media Video files. Pocket Movies was my site for watching your movies on PDAs and Pocket PCs. I was doing stuff like that in 1993. Before that many of us shared video files going back to 1988. I saw all this stuff from the start and helped to create a few compression schemes.
      My point is that there's always people who are ahead of the curve and then it becomes mainstream. The real meat of information is not publicly known. That's why you have to learn how to do things yourself, ask questions, and don't fit in because it's what's expected of you. HACK THE PLANET!

      spiro revelis Alright, Mr. High-and-Mighty, I am glad you haven’t had to work a minimum wage job, otherwise you’d be bitching about it like the rest of us average folk. As a Baby Boomer, you are probably unaware, but there is this thing called inflation that effects the prices of everything we need to buy in order to live. Things that would’ve been say 1.05 back in the 70-90’s are now close to 3.50 today. This means that making scrapes wouldn’t cover all of today’s cost of living. Yes, there are a portion of young people of my generation and the one before me that don’t have a work ethic, but for the most part every young person I know gets up to bust there ass at a 9-5 rat race job just to save enough money in order to further their education and skills to land themselves a better job. However, Someone has to clean the toilets and rooms at the hotels you stay at, or flip those fast food burgers everyone likes so much, and someone has to work the register at the store you buy groceries from. We are always going to need people to the grunt work that people who are “made of better stuff” such as yourself, don’t want to do. Those people deserve just as much respect as anyone else. People like us, that work hard at what we do, deserve to be able to buy the basic necessities and take care of our families. Is that honestly too damn much to ask for?
      I get it, you’ve never work these kinds of jobs so you obviously don’t know what it’s like. If you really are better at things and have worked hard for your success that’s great! However the more likely scenario is that you came from a wealthy family, had your college paid for by your parents, and now work a high paying career. Which is fine, as long as you aren’t an asshole about it. Get the fuck of your high horse and take a good look at our reality. You didn’t even have to say you’ve never work a minimum wage job, your inconsiderate and just plain cruel opinion of those you deem lesser has spoken volumes for you.

Management is normally pretty chill with entry level jobs as far as the staff goes, because at the end of the day they're only a step up from employees themselves. They're just trying to get paid, get through the day, and not get in trouble. They just have a little bit more they're responsible for. They don't give a fuck if the stores profit is down as long as they're not getting in trouble for it though.

    • @VMIFerrari
      @VMIFerrari 7 лет назад +20

      Elinymous, your assertions are demonstrably false. I've BEEN there, DONE that, and seen it multiple times in my own experience...and *no*, I did not get into trouble. I worked for Belk, J.C. Penney's, and Books-a-Million when I was younger. It's always the same story. If you sell the store's credit cards, magazine subscriptions, and bring more selections to the customers you get a nice little pat on the head. If not, you get the boot. They would go over this in the morning meetings on a daily basis and kept tabs on who was upselling and who wasn't. It was all about making the store look good in the eyes of the corporate goons...that's why the Belk I worked at closed its doors only *three* years after it was opened. Profits were down, so they cut their losses. *You are expendable & can be easily replaced*. That's business 101 in the corporate world.

      And what they're training is pretty minor compared to how some other companies what their employees to upsell...once autoparts store that wanted the cashier to scan the item and then proceed to explain about it...and another grocery chain wanted their baggers to pull up the cart right away (After the groceries) didn't sit well with woman who still had their purses in it, and get 2 "No"s when offering to take the cart to their cat. But as usual...most employees quit doing it after being their a month. Nothing wrong with upselling, it can add great points to a company revenue, it is a matter of how far it goes.

    I remember getting pissed off at my local Blockbuster because they did not have a NEO*GEO system for rent. A few years later they had a Sony Playstation system for rent before it was released in 1995. I rented it with Tekken and Battle Arena Toshinden. The nostalgia for those days with me is beyond belief.
