The Console Wars -- XMas 1990

  • News program "Good Morning America" dated December 20, 1990 did a segment on Nintendo and its competitors during the 1990 holiday season. It was a question wether or not Nintendo could uphold their position as top game maker despite their older NES hardware compared to their rival's 16-bit systems. Nintendo wasn't gonna have their 16-bit system released in the States until the following year. More powerful systems also meant a higher price tag which was a major concern due to the U.S. economy at the time.

      it is, nintendo isn't shit compared to playstation or even the lackluster xbox, it's a joke, it had it's day in the sun from 87-90, and once more for a brief period of time when the 64 came out, but then sony hammered in the final nails of that even, so it is funny, because it's a brand that struggles to maintain when it clearly doesn't have the firepower to compete, the people who buy nintendo today are geeks or generational adults that are living off the original nintendo nostalgia of the 80's

      ***** geez, did you not play games in 1990? NEC (TurboGrafx 16) was around, Atari (7800) was around, Sega (Genesis) was around, and Nintendo (NES) was around. If you have Nintendo with roughly 90%, that means Sega couldn't have had 10%, because that would leave NEC and Atari at 0%, which they weren't because they both sold games in 1990.

      Orlando Steward they should really call it the Sonic and Mario war, because in 1991 after Sega released Sonic, the battle was on for king supreme, and through 1992 SEGA had the majority of the market, it was in 1993 that Nintendo finally clawed it back, but the Genesis was being miss-managed by Sega with that stupid 32-X, the CD, Saturn right around the corner, etc, etc.

      Because none of the grown ups in this production had ever played a videogame [with the exception of the interviewed gaming executives]. This is why Nintendo had to use the movie metaphor. That and people were probably remembering the crash of '82 - were parents really going to splash out c. $40 per game based on how well Atari had done with "ET"? I must admit, even UK parents were very reluctant to buy multiple games for one system (based on my own straw-poll research). In 1991, games cost around £30 and it was really cost-prohibitive to have a videogame habit that couldn't be fed by swapping carts with your friends.

    • @pika62221

      Vieweracc99 Were you even alive in 1982? What crash of '82? They didn't even have any discounts or lack of games in 1982, 1983 was a consumer's dream with tons of games, and hardware in stores, but in 1984 the market was dead, I couldn't find any new games in stores, most had them in discount bins, so after school I used to rummage through them only to find Othello and other crap games no one wanted. It "crashed" in 1984 despite what you may read on "Wrongipedia", I know I EXPERIENCED IT!

Sega released the Genesis in the US about two years before the SNES and it was apparent right from the start how much more advanced the Genesis was over the NES. I still think the Genesis beats the SNES for overall total great games, but SNES had their gems too. Super Mario Kart is the best 16 bit racing game, even better than MarioKart64. Mortal Kombat was better on Genesis, but MK2 was far superior on SNES. Phantasy Star II is superior to A Link to the Past(I know I'll get some flak for that one).

You had the top five singles to listen to before you buy at Camelot records, you had the food court, the arcade, and Christmas time always meant the Nintendo display set up at both Sears and Venture with Nintendos and the hottest games available. Of course the security guards ensured a strict time limit on play per kid.
    I bought an emulation station a year or two ago at Christmas for my family (for those few who may not know, it is a small computer about the size of a deck of cards that has tens of thousands of video games from gaming systems spanning the Gen x era (Commodore, Apple, Atari, Sega, Turbo Grafix, as well as popular arcade games from that tme era). My oldest was bored to tears, my other kids were mildly entertained. I was a six pack of Jolt cola, a greasy pizza, and a cassette tape of Appetite For Destruction from Christmas Break 1986.

    100$ for a brand new Nes in 1990. Wonder how much it'd be worth today in mint condition? $500?

    • @DrVanNostrand01
      @DrVanNostrand01 9 лет назад +4

      nah about 70 for console and two controllers w/ mario duck hunt. If you have one in the box in perfect condition you could maybe get 120 for it. Still too many around for them to be incredibly rare although they are becoming harder to find. I'm probably going to buy one I saw on craigslist for 85 and that comes w/system mario duck hunt and zelda

      Whatever the numbers, the TG16 was a very capable system. I, personally, am a Nintendo fanboy, but I got a TG16 as they were going on clearance. It came with Keith Courage and Power golf. It was interesting and different, but ultimately it sat in a closet for a couple decades. Pulled it back out a few years ago and got some proper games, and it's really been a blast. I can see how it was a hit in Japan, especially considering the fact that they got a much bigger/better library of releases. Too bad TG16 prices are so sky high now.

    Tom is correct when he says better graphics Nintendo doesn’t think of better graphics Sega was the like the Xbox most powerful console every time Nintendo caught up sega would make another console step ahead of Nintendo 32 bit 32 x after Nintendo got their Super Nintendo caught up with 16 bit even the sega cd was amazing the games looked so real

    • @ajmetz82
      @ajmetz82 4 года назад

      While Nintendo has always prioritised gameplay over graphics, they raised the bar graphically with SNES, SuperFX, Donkey Kong Country, and then delayed the Nintendo 64 - skipping 32bit tech (let's ignore the Virtual Boy for now) and going straight to 64-bit. It wasn't until the Wii that they dropped out of the graphics arms race, and focused on novelties (motion controls with Wii, touch screens with DS, 3D displays with 3DS, tablet form factor with Wii U, and flexible Home Console or Portable forms with Switch).

    • @Suhadisgood
      @Suhadisgood 4 года назад +2

      ajmetz82 the Nintendo 64 wasn’t better the Dreamcast it never released any arcade games like marvel vs capcom it was all about Mario and Zelda games Nintendo doesn’t think of releasing arcade games to home consoles Sony and Sega and Xbox releases the arcades Nintendo was boring just like today which console isn’t giving achievements or trophies it’s Nintendo who should of ben doing it when the Wii was released in 2006 then no achievements on Wii U and still no achievements on Nintendo Switch plus Nintendo Switch is very weak it can’t play WWE 2k18 so they stopped making WW2k 19 and 20 Nintendo is boring Sega is way much better without sega there is no sonic Tom is a smart man he would of giving Sega consoles achievements the best graphics more powerful then Nintendo

    • @ajmetz82
      @ajmetz82 4 года назад

      @@Suhadisgood I never said it was better than the Dreamcast. N64 was released in the UK in 1997, and Dreamcast didn't arrive until 1999. N64 was 64-bit, Dreamcast was next generation 128-bit. N64 was in the PSOne/Saturn/N64 console wars. Dreamcast was in the Dreamcast/PS2/GameCube/Xbox era, although Sega killed it themselves just as PS2 launched, and before Gamecube or Xbox were even out, to become a software company and release for DC, PS2, GC and Xbox, etc.

    • @ajmetz82
      @ajmetz82 4 года назад

      My point was Nintendo used to be in the graphics race. True, they're not now. With the SNES and N64, they had the most powerful consoles with the best graphics, of their respective console generations. So they did used to lead in graphics too at one point.

    • @ajmetz82
      @ajmetz82 4 года назад

      I agree Sega was better at Arcade games. I bought a Saturn months after the N64 launch, because I found Nintendo's cartridges too expensive at retail and enjoyed the cheap yet excellent Saturn games going in shop bargain bins at the time. Following Saturn also got me hyped for the impending Dreamcast - and I got that too at launch.
