A Sega merchandising tape dated March 1, 1990 - promoting Sega's Genesis line-up just shortly after the console was released in North America August 14, 1989
Did you guys know this is the Sega Generation of The 90's! I was waiting at the edge of my seat for him to say those words.. 97 times. Okay, so I got my Sega Genesis in '89 and I loved it. I got many of these games in 1990 and for their time there was nothing better. I got Altered Beast, Space Harrier 2, and Ghouls N' Ghosts the same day as my Genesis. I got Golden Axe and Phantasy Star 2 a few months later. By the end of that first year I had The Revenge of Shinobi, Rambo 3, Tommy Lasorda Baseball...and that was before Christmas of that year. I bring all of this up to ask...What the Hell is Zoom?! I was a huge Genesis player and I stayed up on everything I could (thank you EGM). I largely left the 8-bit generation behind (minus Ninja Gaiden and SMB3) and even preferred my Genesis over the Snes I got in '91. Someone help me out here, did Zoom ever see a release in the states and if so how rare is it?
We found ways though... I was 18 in 1990 and had my own landscaping business so I had been saving up for it from about June 1990 to December 1990. I had just enough for the AES Gold System and a couple of games.
That's because the Sega Master System was an 8-bit console. Rocky was a 2-Meg game released on the SMS in 1987. Super NES was a 16-bit console which was released in the U.S. in 1991.
This is so odd. Sega was trying to kill the arcade industry in the 90's, but in the 00's they are almost the only company trying to keep arcades alive.
@rivercityrandom The Master System was so popular in Australia, I just assumed it must have been big in the US too. It wasn't for years that I realised this wasn't the case.
Damn. This video is unintentionally prophetic, like some manner of foreshadowing. The 90's was the only decade where SEGA was even a major player and they were already falling towards the end of it with Saturn
+Jay Robitaille Sadly it started with the 32x and internal mismanagement. Success was still within their grasp with the Saturn if they just stuck with what they were great at, bringing the arcade experience home. Compare any multi-platform 2D fighter on the Saturn vs the Playstation and you'll find the Saturn was usually the way to go for perfect or near perfect arcade ports. But Sega of America had their strict only 3D games policy and the idea that American don't like RPGs at a time the RPG market was exploding in the US.
They did well in Japan during the entire 90s, you are clearly an American. SMS is very popular in Europe, Australia, Japan, and Latin America too (in the 80s and 90s).
It is largely American stupidity that is reflected poorly onto others. A lot of 'stay at home people' fail to realise SEGA has arcades too which were still big until the 2000s outside of Japan. I was playing plenty of SEGA games in the mid and late 90s in arcades despite not owning a Saturn at the time.
unfortunately it will not but fortunately SEGA is still with us and still making good games Expect to see another compilation soon and Dreamcast games on PSN
no, he was saying the Master System Rocky looked just as good as a similar SNES game, in other words he was calling the SNES crap, which in many ways it was (though not all).
Was this a store kiosk video or was it mailed to Sega customers? I still have an old SMS VHS tape I purchased through the Team Sega Newsletter back in 1988 which shows off a bunch of Master System games such as Double Dragon and Phantasy Star. Those were the days. :)
Well at least the Sega Genesis was quite a great 16-bit system for me. However, it can also play Master System Games with the power base Converter as well! (Only works on Model 1 Genesis) Unless it’s SEGA for the 90’s! 👏🏻🤩 🎮
Nintendo didn't start hyping their Super NES and their line-up until their "Play It Loud" campaign in 1994. That commerical featured music from the rock group "Butthole Surfers" while showing a montage of 1st and 3rd party games like: Street Fighter II, Super Punch Out, Mortal Kombat II, and Donkey Kong Country. That commerical was truly epic! Type in: Nintendo + Play It Loud in youtube search for the clip.
1:56 - "Makes turtle soup out of those other games!" I bet this was a take that to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, since Konami was making TMNT games for Nintendo's systems. They eventually would for the Genesis in 1992 and 1993, in the forms of The Hyperstone Heist and Tournament Fighters (by then, Nintendo's practices that any third-party companies that made games for their systems couldn't also do so for their competitors was made illegal, as they were seen as giving Nintendo an unfair advantage).
Ryan Good It used a Motorola 68000 CPU, featured in computers like the Amiga during its time. Using the same CPU as the Sega arcade boards would have drove the cost up.
For me the Sega Genesis was always the better system. Even though the SNES was said to be the more powerful console, I always enjoyed the Sega Genesis games better.
There were more games I really enjoyed on the Genesis, but I love my favorite 5 SNES games more then my favorite 5 Genesis games, so they are near equal imo.
OMG, look at those super amazing graphics! *mouth waters* I need to go down to Montgomery and pick one up now so I can... wait a second.... its 2012! Oh well. Guess there's no use to going to that abandoned Montgomery Ward on 2nd street.... to Ebay! xD
I love that during the world championship football game the player is attacking his own goal as it says corner kick when he shoots and misses. Either the player doesn't understand the rules or the computer is to hard so he couldn't get a shot at goal :P
0:57 "If they look the same, you've answered correctly" BULLSHIT! "Super Hang-On' is smooth like butter on the arcade and sluggish and choppy on Genesis. Genesis "Ghouls 'N Ghosts" is missing background detail too. ........LMAO, just kidding. I know what they were trying to get at with this. If it was NES Vs. Arcade it would've been a different story.
If you look quickly they look nearly identical. But if you play both side to side definite differences. Still, the Genesis did a great job coming close. And this was just scratching the surface of the good stuff we would get going into the 90s. This was the golden age of console gaming to me.
god, I remember those old Genesis commercials. like that kid who had all those tvs and consoles in his garage. how much would he have to charge to make back the money it cost to stock up his garage like that? haha
kids today so spoiled get 50 sega games on 1 disc for like 20$ on xbox 360. used to be 50-70$ a pop. sonic and knuckles was all i got one xmas back in the day. crazy time flies man
This was back when Sonic wasn't the face of Sega. It's an amazing piece of gaming history :)
Ahhh, memories.
If I could only be taken back to these times. Where's my DeLorean?
When the announcer inexplicably tried channeling Stallone for the Rambo III part, I laughed uncontrollably.
It was an incredible era, everything was SEGA or Nintendo. I loved my Super NES but I also enjoyed playing Genesis on my buddy's house
I have Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe in the SEGA 6 pack. I love having a retro game store close to my house.
Genesis rocked so hard!
Hard!!
Genesis is still fun too play I still play mine in 2024
Drink every time you hear "new generation".
Drink what? Pepsi?
WebVMan lol I know right. That WAS the drink back then!!!!!
@@WebVManReturns Only if it's Crystal Pepsi 😆
Glad you enjoy it - total nostalgia !
Thanks for watching thanks for watching :)
Way better than Playstation 4.
Ya i know the ps4 sucks Genesis is the shit!
Yeah, the 16-bit era was the last era where video games felt like actual video games. Everything's too cinematic, now.
Even better then Playstation 5!
@chrisrj9871 I know every video games just look like movies I just want to play the games not hear characters talk all day long.
Who cares about console wars, it's pointless.
That Rambo impression though....
Wow. I never knew Revenge of Shinobi made turtle soup out of other games! Learn something new every day.
"Sega for the 90's"
An ominous prediction.
Amazing find. I'm nostalgic now!!!
"Makes turtle soup out of those other games." Shots fired.
Of course, there would eventually be TMNT games on the Genesis.
+Ratical I was just thinking the same thing!
Maybe it's not a stab at the TMNT, just a stab at the NES's ninja games using TMNT lingo?
I still have my master and genesis systems and ton of games for both. 8 and 16 bit eras were the best.

You probably already know by now, but Zoom did see a release in the States. It's not rare at all, and it's not very good. Haha!
Excellent! Great memories. You just restored 20+yrs of my life...LOL
Tommy Lasorda RIP buddy
I still play my Sega Genesis i love the nostalgic feeling its so magical
yeah! this video is such a great example of videogame-commercials of the 90´s! :)
so, thanks for uploading!!!
I think the Sonic the Hedgehog series made the most success for the Sega Genesis
Ya that was the the game that got them to the forefront along with the other games they had on the system
Obviously
Aric Wilson sadly!
Thanks so much for posting! This brings back so many memories!
Neo-Geo brought the arcade experience home. :)
And then we were all too poor to buy it.
We found ways though...
I was 18 in 1990 and had my own landscaping business so I had been saving up for it from about June 1990 to December 1990. I had just enough for the AES Gold System and a couple of games.
videogameobsession I never found other ways to afford it. I still cannot. I had to rent games on Mega Drive for 2.49 over the weekend.
The OG Genesis line up was very good. What a great console.
That's because the Sega Master System was an 8-bit console. Rocky was a 2-Meg game released on the SMS in 1987. Super NES was a 16-bit console which was released in the U.S. in 1991.
if had seen this video back then,i would have got one sooner. i didn't get mine till '93.
Anyone remember the Road Rash games. They were the shit back then.
Oh ya i remember those games
Still have it
Road rash was the best. Beating bikers.....classic.... Good memories.
Gotta love how the announcer sounds like he's never played a video game before in his life
Holy shit man that prototype ESWAT title screen is badass!
I think I still have this tape somewhere.
Cool
Shivers with nostalgia
lol @ the TMNT reference at the 1:56 mark.
"Sega or Nintendo, It's your choice."
me- Yes, and it's the choice of a New Generation!"*drinks pepsi*
Dude, they didn't stop making VHS tapes until 2006-2008, so even kids that around around 10 know what a VHS tape is
i remember how cool the sega channel used to be, and how I wanted it so bad as a kid!!
Sorry, that's how the video was. Also RUclips degrades the quality after I make the video capture.
Let's face it,The Genesis was Sega's Greatest Console. No denying.
Eh, I preferred the Saturn myself.
WoW! I know what I'm getting this Christmas!
Is it scary I remember this still like it was yesterday?
XD Nothing like a Sylvester Stallone impersonation to make me miss the 90s. :D Still have my brother's old Genesis Model 2 from 1993, good times. :3
It's So Scary To Think How Far Games Have Come In The Past 20 Years. If Only The Game Qualities Got Better Aswell :(
This is so odd. Sega was trying to kill the arcade industry in the 90's, but in the 00's they are almost the only company trying to keep arcades alive.
Genesis brings the arcade experience home for the first time ever1
@rivercityrandom The Master System was so popular in Australia, I just assumed it must have been big in the US too. It wasn't for years that I realised this wasn't the case.
Sega genesis my favorite console in the early 90s
back when games had soul....and heart

Memories in 1990s
i really play those games on genesis mini in 2020
man seeing all of this making me feel like a relic of the past like the genesis and saturn lol
Ahhh the 90s.
Genesis pre-Sonic.
Thanks for this man!
unfortunately it will not
but fortunately SEGA is still with us and still making good games
Expect to see another compilation soon and Dreamcast games on PSN
" ...the biomonsters have gone mad and so will you after hundreds of hours of great adventure gameplay..." WTF?! XDXDXDXD
ME too only 77 more years!! to the 90's
Only 68 now!
5:20 I miss that random bar blip in VHS's.
now if you excuse me, I'm gonna play "Sega"
From Bedrooms to Billions: The PlayStation Revolution brought me here.
gotta love the kids doing the razor ramon catchphrase
I cant wait for the 90s
no, he was saying the Master System Rocky looked just as good as a similar SNES game, in other words he was calling the SNES crap, which in many ways it was (though not all).
if i saw this years ago i would be in awe
imagine watching that in 1990, I was 6 years old... wow..........
Wow, that video brought back a looot of memories ;-D
The "U don't say!?" is a SPY-MEME!
Nowadays, Consoles surpass the arcades. The Genesis and NES days were awesome though.
So sad that the 90s were Sega best and worst decade!
Sega-CD was forgivable, but the 32X was the worst choice they've ever made.
State of the art graphics right there, beats the 360 and PS3 by MILES
Was this a store kiosk video or was it mailed to Sega customers?
I still have an old SMS VHS tape I purchased through the Team Sega Newsletter back in 1988 which shows off a bunch of Master System games such as Double Dragon and Phantasy Star. Those were the days. :)
I remember this on Toys R Us kiosks back in the day

great footage!!! :)
Neo Geo has changed all that with games that look, play, and sound like the real arcade games because they are real arcade games.
Same here - that was random XD !!!!!!!
TWICE THE FUN! *shows guys smashing the A button for 10 seconds* HELL YEAH.
Wow! Thats,amazing!
This is why I just got a Genesis.
''join forces with the mythical powers of the altered beast'' :O
1:56 - "Makes turtle soup out of those other games!"

Just another 73 years
I have a Sega Genesis but it sadly died :( but I can relive it with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on PS3
How much corn is in this add @_@...but I luv my genesis...many many good memories. But the corn in this...good gawd.
Even in 1989, people put apostrophes in the wrong place. It's the '90s or the 1990s - how hard is this to grasp?
I love that during the world championship football game the player is attacking his own goal as it says corner kick when he shoots and misses. Either the player doesn't understand the rules or the computer is to hard so he couldn't get a shot at goal :P

Weird how they attacked the arcade market instead of trying to mix with the arcade market. We need more arcades and movie rental stores.
Dave has got the right idea.
kids today so spoiled get 50 sega games on 1 disc for like 20$ on xbox 360. used to be 50-70$ a pop. sonic and knuckles was all i got one xmas back in the day. crazy time flies man
to UltraJackhammer
I read that Sega still make arcades systems in Japan.
good god I am feeling really old
