    I'd like to point out it isn't 50% of profits it's 50% of sales. So it's a little better than it seems.

      Assuming the expenses are 50% of the product price, Hasbro is just breaking even on these products. That’s as good as you can ask for from a major corporate with shareholder interests

    • @TolarianCommunityCollege
      @TolarianCommunityCollege  2 месяца назад +300

      Yes, a lot of people are pointing this out and you're right. It seems very likely Hasbro's goal was to break even on this. My point still stands that the cynicism about it not being 100%, whether of sales or profits or whatever, is not the right take and that people need to focus on the many, many good qualities of this and the charity it go towards.

    • @jcbillman
      @jcbillman 2 месяца назад +21

      Yes AND many corporations donate for tax benefits. By breaking even they are not gaining a tax advantage so break even is more altruistic that it seems with even this deeper look.

    • @retronymph
      @retronymph 2 месяца назад +12

      @@relaxwithgraysen123I'm not so sure expenses are 50% of product price, like, it's cardboard. Yes they have to pay artists (these are 7 new commissioned pieces after all) but still. But honestly, as prof says it doesn't really matter.

    • @SpaceNinjaKing
      @SpaceNinjaKing 2 месяца назад +13

      @@jcbillman that's not how tax benefits work though... - the tax benefits are on the amount they paid to charity i.e. they don't have to pay taxes on that amount of money they earned as they gave it away to charity, if a company makes 1 million before tax, they would be taxed on that million, if they make 1 million and give half away to charity, then they only pay tax for the half they kept. yes it's a way for them to pay less in taxes in terms of final amount, but that's only because it makes their profits lower - they still pay the tax on the money they earn and keep as profits

    I met Sheldon for the first, and only, time at Magic Philadelphia last year. He signed my playmat with a huge signature, right in the center, one of two or three dozen creators and personalities who'd eventually sign. A treasure I'll cherish always.
    On the last minutes of the last day of the event, my playgroup hadn't finished our game in the Command Zone. Earlier, he'd Booster Tutor'ed our table, handing each of us a pack to draft a card into the game, and now he'd come back to the table "I cast Divine Intervention!" He exclaimed to the table, "The game is a draw, and I'm banishing you all to the exile zone. Time to pack it up."
    We all walked out of the Command Zone together, my playgroup and several others, with Sheldon walking and taking with us, before we stepped out of the expo hall and all scattered in our own separate ways. Sheldon marched us out, and though I'd never see him in person again, I'd think often about how he commanded a room the way he did.
    I feel honored to have spent even a little time with him.

      Have a quote from one of the people who worked on this, then:
      "The dragon giving its life for the children matches both the sacrifice mechanic of the card and the idea that life can be bountiful and beautiful-even when it ends. When I wrote the description, it was just a dragon and some kids. It wasn't until he passed that I realized the dragon was Sheldon."

    This was a set I knew I wanted to support. My Dad (who is a Retired Military Veteran himself as I know Sheldon was) has Cancer it is under control and monitored regularly. As a Disabled Combat Veteran myself and recently have come back to Magic thru the avenue of Commander format and introducing my Wife (who has lost family to Cancer) to Magic the Gathering then learning about Sheldon thru the videos and articles I have read I felt this was more than worthy of my support. I bought 2 sets in fact. I really liked all the small text on each card and the stories behind the creation of them. The Band of Brothers text also shares special meaning to me personally. This was a good video and was wondering when this set would get mentioned. Thankyou!

    I was lucky enough to learn to play Commander from Sheldon. I had only been playing Magic for a couple of months and I went to a Commander event at Pax West. It was a "play with Commander luminaries" event. WOTC gave each of us one of the new precons then assigned us to a table. I remember asking Sheldon what his connection with the game was and he gently explained that he was sort of responsible for the format. I would have bought this set even if didn't have ANY financial value, and have already started piling up the cards for my "Sheldon the Commander" deck.

    I never got the chance to meet Sheldon but I'm forever thankful to him for creating the Commander format. I have so much fun with the format and even introduced it to my two friends in college and they love it too! In fact, without Commander, I might not have been into MTG or even found TCC in the first place. Thank you for your speech at the end Professor and I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

    While I never got to meet Sheldon in person, I've watched many video's of him on shows. He seemed like a very kind and thoughtful individual. He brought to us a wonderful game of Magic that everyone enjoys. I appreciate what he brought to the game for all us. Thank you Sheldon for everything you brought to our wonderful game. I purchased two of these, one to play with and another just to put up and maybe give to someone else one day to pass it on. Rest in peace.

    I don't think that Sheldon would have had it any other way, and I don't think the community would have had it any other way, either. Sheldon's contributions to the game make Magic what it is today, and to immortalize his legacy with the very cardboard rectangles he loved is, in my opinion, the best way to both commemorate and celebrate Sheldon and his legacy. I've never met the man, but he has my utmost respect. RIP, Sheldon.

    I bought mine the first day it was available. I never got the chance to meet him, but through stories of content creators like yourself, it helped me get to know him. He seemed incredible. As almost exclusively a commander player, who owes effectively my entire magic history to the format, and by extension it’s creator, I felt obligated to offer some tribute to his legacy

    Just listening to Prof talk here kinda gave me goosebumps for some reason, I never met Sheldon but I do owe him big time. There are so many people I've met and so many friends I've made because I started playing Commander two years ago and I'm absolutely certain that my life would have been a lot worse had I never started playing commander. I will probably never play any of these cards, but whatever giving some money to charity and honoring the man who indirectly brought me and a lot of my friends together is definitely worth it.
