    Thanks for your video... It was 1:00am when I got my van stuck in the mud. I was jumping in and out of the van trying to get the van unstuck... throwing gravel, rocks, small logs under the tires to get it out... I was close to getting out of the hole...When I jumped in the van to try one more time... and my ignition was "locked" up... Spent the night in the van. In the morning I found your video... but did not have a rubber mallet, as I was out in the bush.... so I used a rock to spank the keyhole. Free at Last!!! Thanks

    Something I learned while trying to solve the "key won't turn" problem. Diagnosis steps: 1 Did the key refuse to turn before you turned steering wheel to full lock position? This is what happened to me. Then I went to RUclips and did all of the suggestions that did not work. Just before I got ready to replace the ignition switch (plastic dod-dad under the dash) I thought that I had better try my spare keys. Bingo. It was the key after all. I had been having trouble with my door locks also and this solved that problem also. Thanks for posting this. I did try doing it smacking on the key but it did not work.

    I had to fight an unruly, know it all husband, who doesn't use RUclips, and is not caught up on todays technology, (smart phones and internet).
    I literally had to beg him to let me try this after he'd been trying nearly an hour to crank the truck.
    It didn't happen the first few swipes. I figured he was expecting me to fail or even tear something up, so, I hit everything with the mallet, and got it to crank.
    Mr. Know-it-all proceeded to tell me why it worked and started talking in car part language. I realized he wasn't gonna give me so much as a "thanks" or even a nod to another RUclips success, so, I turned the ignition off before exiting the truck.
    Just sitting here waiting for him to come to me for help.

    Before risking causing more damage than necessary try what has worked for me on three different trucks (Chevy) over the years. With the key in, apply gentle turning pressure to hold the key in place and push/pull the key in and out rapidly. You may find the key will turn without having strike the apparatus with a hammer (or any other suggested weapon of destruction). May work for you. May not. But a good, easy, first try. Once I had the key turning by doing this I shot a little WD40 in the key slot and with additional jiggling of the key as described I found the key cylinder would, after a while, operate at near normal. Never had to replace the cylinder in any of the three trucks ('03, 04, and '07 Silverados) to this day.

    I've been a locksmith for 20 years have fix many ignitions and see this all the time.
    So what's actually happening is there's probably a broken wafer. Wafers are what rides on the bumps of the key for the corresponding depth... When you hit the ignition with the hammer you're vibrating that broken or bent wafer into a place where it can turn again. The problem is this doesn't fix it and it can happen again and can get worse and can break your key, or even worse gets stuck somewhere a door in the cold excetera. Another reason could be of a crummy copy so therefore the Wafers are riding on the the bumps correctly in jamming... another issue is removing/ replacing the cylinder is ok except if the car has a transponder you're going to have another key and now the car won't even start because the immobilizer hasn't been married to the new transponder chips. Should call up a local professional locksmith that has a shop address or someone that someone's vouched for. Because unfortunately like any other business there's people that are out there rip you off.

    • @youjeltrevo
      @youjeltrevo  6 лет назад +8

      Thank you, Michael! Man, I am thankful for the locksmiths! I have been helped out of many jams thanks to you terrific people! I have absolutely no doubt that this can do damage to the ignition. Hopefully nobody thinks this is a definite, permanent fix! It's more like..."I need to get to work in 20 mins, what can I do to get there" and get it fixed later. Thanks for your comment!

    • @dougngn
      @dougngn 4 года назад

      @@thomasehrler7510 sometimes just remove the bent,worn, or broken wafer. But it is just as much work as replacing the cylinder if not more but saves you the cost of parts which was very well worth it. Just did a 2003 Civic. One bent wafer would not let key turn. Removed bad wafer and works fine now. Took two trips to car and about 5 hours to get it all apart and back together. Half the time in the dark with a flashlight. I have done it several times on different cars and would say it is not really a job for the average doityourselfer. Oh, and the hammer trick with key in an out hammer up down sideways backwards all around did not work.

    I’m a 68 year old Gramma in California who drives a 98 Lex LS 300. On New Year’s Day, the trunk packed with goodies, I hopped into the car, stuck the key in the ignition, and it would not turn. So I sat there crying. UNFAIR! I’m missing dinner with my grandkids! I looked up all sorts of fixes, tried many things, & got no where. At 5AM this morning, with a new attitude I ran out to try the key again. Key would not turn. Now my Rottie puppy was also crying, missing her romp at the dog park. Finally I went went to You Tube. Nah, I don’t think THAT will work, or THAT, & definitely NOT THAT, and then scrolling down I found YOU and immediately wanted to see how you fared in your Response. You were definitely doubtful, but then so HAPPY when it actually worked! So, I ran out again, this time with my little hammer. Whack! It worked for me too! Thanks so much for having faith while doubting, for trying anyway, and for sharing the experience. It helped me to do the same.

    The folks who were to do the set up didn’t show, so guess who filled the gap?!
    I had not planned to stay, I don’t care much for fireworks, but guess what I got to do -the cleanup, too.
    I’ve been a member of this ‘society’ for all of four months. I’m alone here not even a board member present, I’m running the show on exhaustion.
    Finally, 10:30 pm the fireworks over, the final potty run and the parking lot is almost empty when I notice one couple unable to start their truck.
    I suggested we return to the clubhouse, read a manual, relax see if I can find any info on RUclips. We did and I did!
    I’m so thankful to you for your posting here!
    I did get home by 11pm, without having to drive them home about 20 miles and return early am to unlock the parking lot gate for their road assistant company.
    You saved me from having a screaming Mimi fit!

    although this may appear to work, and it might get you out of a jam for the moment, it fixes nothing, the actual component that releases the cylinder that allows it to turn is a spring loaded bar that retracts under its own pressure, the key only moves the tumblers out of the way and allows it to move, it does not actually move it and taping it with the hammer only vibrates the slider and causes it to temporally start working again, a little WD 40 might lube it for a little while to get you back on the road but it should be taken out cleaned and lubed with a dry lube like graphite

    i dont know but i got a 06 f150 and i just got it yesterday and today several times when i put it to park and wanting to exit the truck when i want to reach for and grab my keys out of the ignition when the truck is turned off it wouldnt turn that way, the way i see its maybe a safety feature that if you are on a curb or whatever and your wheels are not straight then you cant get it out but idk

      Thanks! That was real honest joy right there. Probably that moment was the only reason this video actually got uploaded because it was a success! Just imagine how sad and useless this video would be had that not occurred!!!

    I just had the same problem. No hammering, cussing , beating on steering wheel or ignition worked! I did go dig out a new raw key! BAMM that's the true story folks. Keys just wear out. I drove into the driveway and parked and that was it. No old key would work.. So I'm off to get more keys made!

    Couldn't get mine to turn. Had random youtube videos playing as I tried messing with it as I prayed.. All of a sudden this came on and I thought man... he sounds so familiar. Looked at the screen and realized it's Johnathan from wbgl! God answered prayer from a familiar voice.
    My husband took my kids to volleyball after this. He was telling a friend there about it. She told him she learned how to fix it from WBGL a while ago too! It gave us a chuckle.
    Thanks again!

    I spent less that $5 and two minutes and I was done. I used a Graphite Powdered Lubricant, squeezing it into the ignition/key hole by using a paper clip to hold open the ignition door. Immediately put in the key and turn back and forth until the ignition turns.
