You don't have to break your ignition off with a chisel. Take wd40 and squirt a little in the tumbler. Insert your key and tap on the end of it with a screwdriver handle to release the tumblers. That should free it up enough to be able to use the key. Look underneath and there will be a pin you have to push with the key on to be able to remove and replace the switch. They have ones for gray key (computer chipped) and black key (no chip). Most dealers can also refurbish yours.

Mark, my daughter has a 1998 Acura integra. The key gets locked in and there is a small lever if you will on the shifter that (its under the plate/cover at the base of the shift lever) you can raise manually and the key will come out nice and smooth. I have been able to get the key out without doing that but you have to fight it and it feels like cylindars have dropped or something. I would like to know if changing the ignition switch (cylindar, keys etc) will take care of this or should I change the piece on the shifter? If so I am having a heck of a time figuring out what its called would you know what its called? Thank You

Hello! I have a 2016 Nissan Versa and this same thing has happened to me. Usually after I jiggle the key for a little bit in and out it starts right up. Some days is easier than others! What exactly should I do? From watching the video I don’t think I need to take the whole thing off.

If you're luck is like mine, not will you have to replace the ignition switch, but a few weeks later, have to replace the battery and a few weeks after that ANOTHER part. It NEVER FAILS, regardless of the vehicle. Easy fixes are for people naturally lucky. I'm not. Its the worse possible scenario every d time ! edit not ONLY will you have to .......(only was missing, no edit with this app

So I've never had this happen with my previous cars and so when I start researching some evidence to support my hypothesis I was led to this video so I know I still need to get the sensor to my e-brake fixed so I'm keeping that in mind but as a temporary quick fix if your ignition key is stuck in a certain position and your key is able to be removed and the engine is still running if you happen to have a Lockpicking kit , use one of the tools to push all of the pins in. Once confident the pins are triggered , Using the Car key to turn switch and disengage the ignition. SUPREMELY off chance solution but it just happened to me and hope it helps Someone else out there!

Good info Aqua thanks - you can also leave the key in the ignition and tap on the end of it until the wafers fall into place if you don't happen to have a lock pic - Cheers from Canada!

I put battery terminals back on put key in fired right up key will not come out again repeat and rinse. Ha ha it just keeps happening. Any suggestions?

I have a 05 Saturn Vue n there was are times that no matter what I do wiggle the key to get it to turn it doesn't. So I believe it's time to replace the ignition.

I think we may need to replace the ignition switch in ours but my husband says if we do that then we'll have to hire a locksmith. Is that true if we were to replace the ignition ourselves? Even if the ignition comes with new car keys? It kinda looks like that's what you did too but I don't understand the need for a locksmith.

It depends on the make model and year of your car -the local mechanic can usually do it - if its old like 90's you maybe able to do it.

My vehicle 2001 taco quad old style key, no fob, the key is worn down. When I got to turn my truck off the ignition won't turn to the off position, it stops at the 'on' position effectively leaving my clock, stereo face and etc to drain my battery. Also the key comes out easy in any position. I need to have dealership make a new key but until then I was hoping to find a trick.
