Key won't turn ignition - ignition lock cylinder Chevy Silverado 1999-2006

- My ignition key will not turn. At least not right away. You have to wiggle it a certain way for it to work. It's time to change the ignition lock cylinder. It's easier than you may think. You 'll need to remove the cover from your steering column. From there it's a piece of cake.

NOTE: if you do this procedure and you can’t get your new ignition to pop right in you have to take a big screwdriver put it in the hole and rotate the ignition square all the way back, after I did this my new ignition slid right and and worked great!! Thanks so much, Greg
Thanks for that info !!
Thanks because that's excatly what I was experiencing.
Someone try stealing my truck my key won’t turn at all
I appreciate you also showing how to replace everything step by step as you put it all back together. Lots of times people just say "reverse procedure to finish it." You actually did it. 👍🏻
Daninator! This video saved my butt on a cross country trip. Did this as a last ditch effort to see if I could get my truck to start and it did the trick, safely back on the road an hour later! Hats off to you my friend!!
Glad the vid helped you out!
You need to go until start position, but put in reverse and after that, turn the key until start position and push the retainer and pull it out.
I'm a professional locksmith.
THANK U!!!!!!!!!!! Im outside sweating my ass off trying to pull the cylinder out and it did not come out til I did what u said
I didnt want to give up my key and have to use a diffrent one for doors and ignition. Took out the lock cylinder like he did, got a very fine file. In my case it wasnt those two little pins causing my problem it was a sharp edge that had developed and it was catching. Rounded a few edges and bingo!! It is very easy to start these trucks without a key i discovered..
I like your pepe pfp good sir I did not read your comment however, that is all.
Thank You! I was stuck in the driveway blocking other cars and after getting the covers off was able to press on the lock rod enough to park the truck to the side, I took the car and got the parts and now it works.
Wow, thanks for posting this! You saved me another almost sleepless night and an expensive tow. Not to mention the mechanics charge.
G W you did it all yourself and it worked out?
Thanks, easy to follow instructions. Done in 30 minutes. We did have to use flathead screwdriver to line up inside parts to insert new ignition.
NOTE: if you do this procedure and you can’t get your new ignition to pop right in you have to take a big screwdriver put it in the hole and rotate the ignition square all the way back, after I did this my new ignition slid right and and worked great!! Thanks so much, Greg
Same Here. Glad I had a flashlight to see why things weren't lining up.
Did mine for 12.99. Thanks. If you lived close id buy you few beers... Locksmith wanted 300.00
Thanks for posting this video only difference was mine was a 2006 Z71 made my repair easy 👍👍
Just a couple different steps on mine. It didn’t have bolts holding column plastic together so all I had to do was use a small flat screw driver to start separation of plastics. Carefully
Oh also I had to hold key all the way forward in start position to be able to push in release button to pull out old lock cylinder.
Thanks again 👍
One thing I'd like to add that happened to me while I was replacing the switch was ,When I took the switch out and went to put the new one in. Inside the ignition itself, moved in there. so the new key switch wouldn't go back in until I put a flathead in there and turned it back the match the key cylinder ,Then it fell right in . Thanks for posting
P.S. There was no 4m bolt in there. just used a finish nail to remove the switch.
You save my life!! You need a reward lol I couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t fit!! Thank you so much
Thanks so much for the video! It totally came in handy. I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg to fix it. Thanks
Totally pro! Excellent tutorial. Even the volume gain was good (often lacking elsewhere).
Be sure and try a factory key first. I had called the locksmith and told them I was gonna try key first. I had given my wife a key to my truck when I bought it 9 years ago and lucky for me she still had it and boom! It started right up!!!! Basics first :)
Finally a straight to the point video nice work you made it look easy thank you
VERY GOOD INFO DIRECTION EXPLANATION AND PIC OF ALL POINTS NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM, THIS MAKES YOU MY FRIEND INDEED! THANK YOU THUMBS UP TO YOU. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Thank you very much for posting this video my truck recently got broke into and they ruined my Ignition switch so I'm going to have to change it out. this video helps a lot thank you.
Bless you, my new friend. I watched another video to diagnose and understand that this was something I could do. But I couldn't get the top housing off the steering column of our 2003 Chevy S10 until I saw you identify the problem bolt, AND suggest using a 4 mm socket wrench to get it off. (Watched 3 other videos before yours, and they suggested removing the steering wheel and airbag to get at it. No!) You saved me tons of time and money!
Good deal! Thanks
This video was very helpful for me because I learned how to pull the cylinder out mine was broke on the on position if your key won’t turn you need to push both pins in by sliding something that will lift them out and then it will turn to the start position I need to crank it all the way over to push in the pin you will see that if you buy a new lock like I did this video is very helpful thank you A+
Thanks just replaced my ignition switch appreciate the video saved me $150.
Awesome!
Bro!!! Thank you so much for this video. I'm having this exact problem, and no man in my life to help solve it. Lol I should be able to fix this no problem! You are a life saver!!! Bless you!!! 🙌
The video was great. I have a 1999 Silverado and my ignition lock cylinder needed replacing. I was nervous to tackle it at first, but with the video you created made it a breeze, once I purchase the right tools. The only thing that I would add is: When inserting the new cylinder, you may need to use a big flathead screwdriver to insert into the core space to turn the switch just a little to line it up to receive the new ignition. cylinder. I had to figure that out to get the cylinder to seat properly. When I put everything back together, it works like new! Thanks.... Oh yeah I had the dealer to set the cylinder to match my existing keys.
How much did it cost for the dealer to set the cylinder to match the existing keys?
@@anthonyg9389 did u ever find out??
@@chrisg1364 no, I just bought aftermarket ignition lock cylinder from amazon
Thank you William, your comment saved my ass tonight. Small turn from 10 o'clock back to 12
Someone broke into my truck and snapped that part off so thanx for the video now i can replace it myself thanx man
Me too
@@urbanbluecollar7813 sorry to hear that i got a new part put it in and got theft insurance👌
@@gagewade2946 did it work
@@thycarguru4252 like a glove i appreciate this guys video
Dude, thaaank you...got a cylinder for $60 bucks and did it...saved me hundreds of $$$
this is great. an option is to buy an "un-coded" ignition lock cylinder and code that (there's videos on how to do that) so you won't have to use two keys.
Thank you sooooo sooooooo much, this helped me and my grandpa ALOOOOOTTTT
5 Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
this video saved me alot of money by doing it myself thanks
Thanks for the thorough explanation. Top cover was giving me a time.
Thanks for the video bro now my 02 escalade has a functioning ignition switch again
Awesome!
Thank u! I just fix a my Girlfriends 96 Chevy 1500 Silverado Ignition Cylinder , it took me a minute jiggling it back and forth but slid out, thanks for the pointer !
Awesome! Glad my video helped.
thank you it worked good for me and I didn't have the old key so I just used my new key to turn it as I put pressure with bar and boom...thank again
Thanks for this video. You saved me a lot of money and stress. My key wouldn’t turn, but a flathead and hammer freed it up pretty easily.
@The Masked Hoodie luckily no. I was just careful
@The Masked Hoodie my ignition switch wouldn’t even turn for me to be able to get it out to change it. So I had to stick the flathead in where the key goes and hit it with a hammer until it broke lose. I was changing the switch out anyway so I didn’t care if I messed that one up
@The Masked Hoodie you could stick a flat into the ignition while using vice grips to turn the ignition itself have to remove the plastic ears first though make sure u clamp onto metal
gracias amigo me ayudo mucho tu video llevo 2 anos con ese problema porfin pude arreglarlo thanks
THANKS Buddy, nice to know the tools required going into something
Agreed
Good video. I've got the same problem, and now I'm confident I can fix this myself. I'll give it a try this week.
Happy repairs!
I decided to tear into it this week. Apparently the previous owner had struggled with the problem. To begin with, getting the covers off the steering column was a snap because he didn't bother to put the retaining screws back in. With only a moment's struggle, I was able to extract the old cylinder, to discover that it had been liberally slathered with grease. That would explain why everything worked fine when I bought the truck, but started going downhill soon after. I popped in the new cylinder without any issues and replaced the covers. The whole process took only a few minutes. Thanks again for posting your video!
Looks like you were able to turn the key lot of help
Thanks!!!!! I spent all afternoon trying to get the top plastic cover off. Never would have found that 4mm screw without your help. Probably would have had to rip that piece out before I found that damn screw.
Haha. I'm sure that happens alot!
It is not actually a 4 mm screw. There are star sockets that are the correct tool for this.
The ignition not turning has absolutely nothing to do with the spring pin as you referred to. It has to do with worn wafers in the lock that are not matching up with your key. All you would have to do is go to a locksmith and get him or her to replace the wafers and your lock is good as new. And you wouldn’t have two keys. You could’ve had the new lock rekeyed to match your old key so everything is on one key but then again you spent money on a new lock that was not necessary. That groove as you called it you said wore out does not happen. Always a good idea to ask a pro. You save money and you don’t misinform people with this nonsense.
Johnny is Mr. Know-it-all. Those guys are the ones you want to avoid taking your car too. @@jaysmokey
Well Johnny know nothing. A locksmith is gonna cost you between $100- $180 to make you a transponder/chip key.
While for $100, I got a new lock cylinder& 2 new transponder keys that I was able to program myself.
You’re the bastards people need to stay away from . Why the Fuck ramble on about this . Stay dumb
@@CSpadunless you got a remote I’m sure you’re not worried about your ignition key not matching with the door anymore, better hope that battery doesn’t run out
Thank you for sharing. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Why, thank you kind sir.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!! This is the easiest serious problem I've ever fixed. Life saver for real!
Great video. Some amateur Jackass broke into my truck this morning and boogered up my ignition switch. Didn't get the truck. If only I was up I could of put 6 slugs through his partner's windshield.
Just had mine all appart because mine was stuck in the crank position. That little gold plate under his tool on the tumbler at 3:57 was popped out. The corners of it are stamped into the casting of the aluminum tumbler. It looks like it holds the springs in the lock. I tapped the spots back down in the corners to stamp it back in place and now it works again. It's very soft aluminum. Mine does do the same thing this guys did and I also thought it was the pins catching on those ramps but I can hold them both IN and it still catches. I think its the little black block on the side of the tumbler that sticks out just a fuzz when the key is out but then goes in when the key is in. I believe it's what prevents you from turning the tumbler without the key in. I don't think it's coming out of the notch where it rides in the female part where it goes into the column. It seems a little cockeyed. I believe that's what catches and not the pins.
So, my ignition switch would NOT move, NO way to rotate to the start position to remove/replace. I pried the plastic off the switch and located the keyway that pops up to lock the cylinder. The springs can fail and the keyway does not disengage from the housing. It's basically right where the arrow on the plastic is. I used a die grinder to cut off the shoulder of the cylinder right where that keyway is (careful not to damage anything else). Put the key all the way into the switch. Then, I took a baby (very small) flathead screwdriver and pushed the keyway down (back into the cylinder slot), tapping the screwdriver in as far as I could. Had to help turn the cylinder with some channel locks, but I got the cylinder to rotate clockwise to that start position and I could then pull it out. New one popped right in.
Where are you man? This helped me so much that I want to buy you a case of beer
Great video, I changed mine yesterday .
Worked like a charm! Thanks
perfect! just what I needed for my sticky key! thanks
That's the AC delco that costs 258 bucks right?
Great video. Thanks. I R/R one on my 1995 f150 long ago and it was so much easier. Didn’t have to take anything apart. But still looks easy enough. Thx agsin !
I gotta do this to dad’s truck. Thanks for the video!!!!

Many thanks. This made it too easy!
Hey man just wanted to say thank you for your guidance ...
Glad it helped you out
ALL I CAN SAY IS THANKS THAMKS THANKS MADE IT SO EASY, DAM GOOD VIDEO!!!!!
Excellent video about 30 minutes and I was up and running
My 1995 Chevy S10 has the same problem with the ignition switch not turning sometimes. I just jiggle it a little and it works. But I like to keep it that way so that my girlfriend can't drive it. I don't want anyone else driving my old truck but me.
Wow that was fast thanks for the help
Thank you that will help me on my truck it when out today
For $28 + around $12 shipping, you can get one with a GM stamped key from Classic Industries. That GM stamp is important to some folks.
this is so helpful! my granddad left me a 2000 chevy Silverado 1500 and he ended up loosing the key so I had to buy a replacement switch
Thanks for the video worked for me I have 2002 chevy Silverado

Perfect instructions. But when I pulled ignition out, inside tumbler turned so new ignition wouldnt go in...aaahh thought for sec then i used a 5/16 closed end..to turn a little to line up,went right in. Thanks.
Special Note: if you do this procedure and you can’t get your new ignition to pop right in you have to take a big screwdriver put it in the hole and rotate the ignition square all the way back, after I did this my new ignition slid right and and worked great!! Thanks so much, Greg
Saved me a pretty penny thanks!!!
Replacing the rubber shift lever 'boot' while in there is also a good idea.
And, if you have tow/haul switch, the orange wire is prone to breaking because factory stretched too tight.
Well, great video. I was able to get thru all the steps until the part where the key has to be turned on in order to release the lock cylinder. But that's my problem! The key won't turn. Very frustrating
Did you ever figure it out?
Thank you very much for the information
. Well stated, well done video. -Joseph
thanks buddy. ..u made it look easy & it was thx again
Awesome!
don't know if mine froze up from moisture got in it,or it's jacked up. I sprayed PB Blaster in the key hole got it to turn,it's not gonna hurt it. you can use WD40 to it should work, hope this helps.
Good stuff. Appreciate it

1996 Chev. C-1500: This works great but the fact is you need the ignition to go forward in order to even remove the core/barrel. I cannot turn the key at all. So it refuses to let me remove the barrel cylinder and replace it. Both keys refuse to work on this ignition. May need to call a specialist.
im in same situation key broke off and 2nd set was a gmc set from csnada?
just got it towed bit took column apart can get out of park still wont turn ignition though

Just changed mine and your video was awesome. It still doesn't want to turn from the off position but once its out of off position its like butter. Should i have greased the new one?
Thank u...been without my vehicle for 8 months...2000 Suburban 1500..towing and repair would have cost $500 at the local mechanics. Guess they sure know how to rip people off if u r at their mercy. Sad
Good vid helped a lot
Tks , it helped a lot
legend, thank you
I did what another video showed drilled a small hole in the cover and came out fine ,but it was not the problem it is the ignition switch,on to find those videos now.
Its not two small pins you talking about in the video, its your key wore out or inside cylinder,I did have the same problem and replaced with new cylinder,if you look at your old cylinder and when you put key in,small plate on the side supposed to slide inside to make a free turn
Cool. Thank you for the info!

Key won't turn...except that yours does, so it's easy to switch out the cylinder. Not helpful.
