  • In this video I show how to replace an 07-16 ignition switch on a Chevy Silverado. It should be the same for there trucks and suv. On my vehicle the key would not turn back to the acc position so I had to get creative to time the ignition switch with the key.
    I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.

Your video of where you looked up the slot that holds the switch and line up the gears and them take a pic and put it into the lock hole to move to the correct location saved my ass. THANS A LOT. Thanks for putting this up. I'm working with a 2011 silverado & it dosen't have accessory position so this helped me get things lined up. I checked a 2008 I happened to have on the lot and it dosen't have accy. position either. I don't know which trucks do have the accessory position in counterclockwise position from lock but neither of these did.

    Good video, making look easy. 03 Silverado cranks, no start. Is that the passlock 2 security module? Can mine be changed like this without replacing the whole cylinder housing so I don't have to take the steering wheel off? Thanks buddy. Rich C

      Hello Richie, there could be a few different reasons why your truck is not starting, personally would make sure the fuel pump is working. I think the pass lock symbol will stay on on the dash if it’s activated. You can change the lock cylinder out without taking the wheel off. Here is a link to how to program the new lock cylinder. www.locksmithledger.com/keys-tools/article/10238356/general-motors-vehicles-equipped-with-passlock

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic

      You should be able to change it without removing the lock cylinder. I just couldn’t get it lined up right so I found it easier to pull the cylinder out then I new it was in the right place. You could probably count the clicks on the switch knowing in advance so you can get it in the right place.

    My issue is my key will not turn any direction on my 2015. It appears to acknowledge the key is in as the time screen flips on but I cant turn the key to even try to start it. Steering wheel is locked and harsh wiggle doesnt release. Im thinking I need a new lock cylinder and new keys rather then the switch. Any thoughts?

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  2 года назад +1

      Have you tried a lubricant in the lock cylinder to try and get the wafers to loosen up. I think your right about needing a new lock cylinder. If you can’t get the key to turn I don’t really know of any other way to get it out without drilling it out. It sounds like you tried to pull the wheel to take the pressure off the lock. Mine usually won’t turn and I need to jiggle the key to get it to turn.

      You might need to turn the piece inside back to the position it was in before you had to turn it back after you removed the lock cylinder. When your putting the lock cylinder in turn the key slightly to align it with the inner piece.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic After many hours it turned out to be,, the lock plunger towards the leading tip. The spring under it was pushing it too far where it protruded out past the ramps angle. The fix was to trim that spring a few coils so contact would be on the ramp angle and slide right in.

      I don’t really know how to get the lock cylinder out if the key won’t turn. With out having the vehicle and messing around with it I’m not sure. I have a gmc that the key won’t normally just turn and I have to jiggle it while applying slight turning pressure and it will turn every time. You might be able to try that. I will shake the key a little up and down quickly in the directions of where the notches are cut for the tumblers while applying slight rotation pressure. So Basically when you put the key in shake it up and down along the flat part of the key. There might be a stuck wafer inside so a little lubricant might free it up to turn. In the end you might be able to force it with a screwdriver and replace the lock cylinder which you will probably need to change anyway. I would try shaking the key first.

    I Wonder... If the key is in the " on " position...and the Dash Lights Up, If You Remove the Black Ignition Switch...with the " Gear ". Can You just Turn the Gear... To a Position to Crank / and Start the Vehicle...???? Please Answer About This... Thanks, Bill, in Los Angeles... 10/15/23.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  9 месяцев назад

      You can match the positions on the ignition switch and put the new switch in but you can’t move the key. The key just spins, there is no detent on the key so it’s hard to get it in the exact position it needs to be if anything is off. The key only stops in the the crank and accessory position and just freely turns in the middle. The ignition switch has no detent in the off position just accessory and on. So you can put it in the on position and make sure the new switch is in the on position then change them without moving the key. You can’t put the ignition switch in crank because it will turn back to on if you don’t hold it there and you won’t be able to put it in and hold the gear, It is under a spring load.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  Год назад

      There is no detent where the key is located to be off on the switch. So if you miss it by one tooth your going to have a hard time getting it right. I tried to just move it at first and i ended up doing this in the end. It might be more steps but I found it faster in the end.

      Sorry I though you asked how to remove the lock. You need to remove the lock cylinder first then use a screw driver or something like it and turn the section that the lock cylinder goes into back to what would be the acc position. Put the ignition switch in and then put the lock cylinder back in. Then put back together.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic

      I’m not sure how to get it to turn if the key won’t go into the lock cylinder. One of my trucks the key goes in but doesn’t like to turn unless I jiggle the key up and down while applying very light rotating pressure, then it will turn. If the key won’t go in your going to have to drill it out or something like that. You could try spraying some penetrating lube in there and see if it loosens up the wafer that’s sticking.
