Chris that knocking trick saved me the cost of a tow truck and my wife's car being left for the night in an underground parking lot. Thank you. Been a loyal follower for a very long time.
One tip: DO NOT turn in your old starter (or any other part) for the core charge when you pick up the new part. Wait until a week or more after you've successfully installed and used the replacement. Occasionally the store parts will ALL be junk (or wrong) and they won't have another part option and you will never get your old part back from them. Keeping your old core allows you to return the junk parts and go to a completely different supplier. I've learned that one the hard way a few times.

Zac Sanders It's not that it's hard. I don't know what do about my cracked leather seats, stained floors, cigarette burns on the side of the passenger chair, or the scratches above the glove box. I want things looking decent.
As someone said before, auction cars generally have a good chance at being dirty enough for a video, but if you're really wanting some dirt and more ask a farmer for their truck/vehicle. If you know one and can use their truck chances are it will be dirty enough. Though there are some farmers who keep them clean. Will it matter to them if you clean it? No since it'll just get dirty again, but it would work for the video. As a detailer I can assure you that a farm vehicle or an auction vehicle are fairly good candidates for the video.
Hyundai wanted 800 to replace my moms starter. We tied a rope to the car, pulled it right off their property, and replaced the starter on the side of the road in front of their sign for dirt cheap.
when u actually have to fix ur car, u'll know it. Pain in the ass! Especially, rust, corrosion, extra torque at nuts and bolts, complexity of computers, diagnosis the problems, tools, safety first, double gaskets made by ur own mistake, ect. That's y people usually end up buying reliable cars rather than gimmicks and muscles. I've never seen any1 cant wait to FIX their cars lol. Vehicles arent Lego which u cant wait to put them together and then break them apart and build new ones.
Chris I just wanna say I really love you, your channel and everything you've done for me. Watching your channel has not only given me hope on working on cars but it has made me such a happier person. I love working on cars and automobiles thanks to you. Something that seemed so hard at first when I knew nothing about cars now became my greatest joy. You really pushed me to become a mechanic just watching how "easy" it is. I'm only 19 years old but I will never forget the impact you've had on my life. I'd love to meet you one day and give you the greatest hug ever! I love you Chris.
Thanks, mate! You saved me having to take the car in to be looked at: previous battery failed and apparently corroded the negative terminal. It wasn't starting, so I checked the fuses and the battery, but no dice. I watched this video in the hopes it would give me an idea of what was wrong, and I ended up only having to remove the corrosion from the terminal clamps before it started up. Awesome video, as usual.
I just got a 2001 Ford Ranger from my friend's family after it sat for 4 years and have been slowly working on fixing all the little issues it has. It's in surprisingly great condition even after 273k miles, and only has small things here and there, worst issue is that the front crankshaft seal is slightly cracked. Since I started driving it, I've had a few moments where I would get a no crank/no start, and I watch so many videos talking about it and none were helpful. Finally, I decided to just buy a new starter, and not 15 minutes after I got home from Autozone, I found your video. Turns out the issue was the neutral safety switch, something I had not seen a single other video mention. I just got back from returning the starter I bought earlier and am glad to have that money back. Thank you so much Chris from 7 years ago, you saved me a lot of time and money. I'm 26 in a week and am very ignorant about vehicles, trying to learn as I go, and I will definitely be checking if you have a video on any issue I might have in the future.
And people that seem to know how to work there lol. My experience with any auto store sucks and I wish I knew where all these awesome ones that everyone seems to have a great experience at.
ChrisFix Hey Chris, I turn the key and my starter does absolutely nothing. I bought a brand new battery, had it tested and put in brand new battery cables. the starter still does nothing. Where exactly do I connect my voltmeter leads on the starter motor to know the power from my ignition switch has energized the starter solenoid and connected the battery power to the starter motor? What should I read if the starter is good? What should I read if the starter is bad?
Mr Obvious you would connect the positive to the lead on the sealinoid that connects to the battery and connect the negative to where you bolt the starter in or anywhere on the base of it. You need to check you relay too cuz it sounds like you aren’t getting power to it.

Thanks Chris Fix! My friends car wouldn’t start and we were about to tow it to a mechanic and I saw your video before I called. It was the FOB!!! I never woulda guessed about the key immobilizer! You THE MAN!
Chris, this video has been a great help! My brother and I have been watching your videos since the beginning, always admiring how much you know and teach us all on cars. Then today my brothers starter quit working in his 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. With your diagnosis check list, and how to step by step, we did the whole thing by our selves, saving us a ton of money instead of taking it to a garage to be fixed. Your how to videos are the best!
An alternative to checking the battery, relays, neutral switch, ignition barrel, fuses or using a hammer is to put the voltmeter directly onto the starter connections. If you get 12V there when you crank it but the starter won't turn, the starter is bad.
Hey coming from India. I helped change my Friend's 2004 Ford Mondeo Ghia mk3's bad starter using your vid and his car starts right up. Pretty hard to find tools and silicone but we got it done. Awesome vid.
I love how you give us info on how to find the parts. I watched a few other videos and they just go straight to the starter with no context. A regular joe at home will never know where to begin looking. Telling us to find where the oil pan/engine meets up with the transmission is where the starter will crank the fly wheel makes it easy to find the starter. Thanks a million.
Great info as usual Chris! When my starter went bad, my car was starting intermittently. When it ultimately failed I was at an auto parts store with a mechanic shop next door. I wanted to fix it myself but it made sense just to pay the mechanic shop to put in the new starter for me. I had jobs to go do so in hindsight I was blessed to be in this situation.
ive watched a few different videos and this one is by far the most detailed yet explained simply. im just beginning learning about cards and have a hard time knowing the best way to start troubleshooting problems. you are great at teaching and showing proper fixing techniques thank you!
I saw a guy in the side of the road who had car trouble. It wasn’t starting so I thought “Chris said to try and hit it with a hammer, let’s see if that works” and it did lol
Chris thank you for the video, very helpful. Had to pick up my oldest niece after her trip and the car would not start. This has happened before and it was embarrassing. Thank god my wife was with me. Had my wife try to start the car while I taped on the starter. After a couple of try’s the car started. Thank you again brother
I just bought a car for $150 no crank no start. Here I come to your channel like I have been for the past 5 years. Thanks for the videos big fan here. Get things done when I look at your videos.
Man!! Im only 2 minutes in and I can TRULY appreciate that you sound very knowledgable, youre not stuttering every sentence and you are getting right to the point!!! Thank you!!! Other people are starting off petting their dog, can barely formulate a sentence, have extremely poor lighting and one guy had his cat sitting under the hood while he worked, talking to cat in baby talk... Sheesh!!!! LOL GREAT JOB. And like I said im only 2 minutes into your video. Cheers!
ha my story is the opposite. I bought my truck for 500 bucks. they told me it's been sitting for a year and the engine was seized. I slapped on a new battery and a starter and it fired right up.
There's a reason they push that "lifetime warranty" so hard. Because it helps you overlook the ultra low price and subpar appearance and build quality, assuming "well it has a lifetime warranty, it must be good." Oh to the contraire. What really happens is, tons of people buy a cheap part because they want to save 20 bucks. It fails. By then they can't be bothered to bring it back to autozone and just take it to a mechanic to have it replaced with a good quality starter. Autozone has just made whatever money was paid for that starter. Slippage is the golden egg at the end of the warranty tunnel for companies. They count on people not ever bringing back shit that's broken.
I would just like to thank @ChrisFix for this video because without it I would still be stuck in a parking lot. I literally made the call and said "Bring the hammer and a creeper. I got this" and here I am now. Now I just need to fix it.
Gr8 vid, Just had my starter go out in my 2001 maxima for the 3rd time in 20 years. no worries. I gave the starter solenoid a few light taps with a pry bar and then it started. I could hear the starter trying to turn but just not engaging. I promptly replaced the starter later in the week. Part was free after warrantee. cheers.
Moiz, I literally, did an entire preventative maintenance overhaul of my car in quarantine by watching ChrisFix's videos. Installed brand new fog lights, and a rear spoiler. I cleaned and waxed my stock headlights with ChrisFix's toothpaste trick (minus the dental floss). Then I decided to replace the stock headlights with better aftermarket ones. I replaced my worn-out struts and sway bar links. Did a complete tune up, oil change, coolant flush, fuel system cleaning, break cleaning, Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning. Cleaned, compounded and polished, and waxed my car. Did a complete engine bay cleaning. The only thing I could not do by myself was install my new rims, which I had to take to an mechanic shop to do; cost me $20 per tire. Because of ChrisFix's videos, I'm actually planning on going back to school to earn my A.A.S. in automotive technology this coming fall semester, and have already signed up for classes.
Gotta Fix my exhaust system, cause the muffler fell off. i have no idea where it went or why im watching a video on Starters. Mise well Just put a new system in, gotta change the O2 Sensors as well.
warning for people doing this on ford trucks. this may apply to some to other vehicles as well. Some starters need a shim stack to be aligned properly, and with ford, the starters are slot drilled for at least one of the bolts on some of the trucks. while I do know how to do the alignment for these, i do not have the correct tools to properly do this and without the alignment tool, I have yet to get the starter to mesh perfectly without grinding. just be aware that this may be the case for some people, and if your starter grinds after installing, you may be forced to have a mechanic do the starter alignment for you. chris, if you have any suggestions on how to deal with this issue avoiding using special tools please let me know. your videos are always entertaining to watch. (current toyota and ase technitian student)
Great job. I subbed cuz your the first person that took the time to truly diagnose and explain what to look for. Man this will help me to get my truck back on the road. Much appreciated and keep up the good work.
Thank you Chris, broke living off grid trying to do everything I can myself, I estimated you just saved me about $300. That money can now go towards things my son needs ❤️❤️ Ps Holden Rodeo 2001 4x4 diesel dual cab ( Isuzu) only has two locking bolts ( thank goodness as it was a total cow to get out )
I am so glad you made this video. Was able to diagnose and put in a new starter. Saved myself a ton of money. As a woman you made this very simple to follow. Thanks
Thanks for the video. Good content, filming and personality. Remember that a lot of your viewers are super stressed out by the time they find you. Even if you don't fix their issue, your pleasant manner and confident tone helps them destress. Again, thanks for the video.
Thank you so much, Chris! I absolutely LOVE your videos and have been wantching from multiple accounts for YEARS! I still remember your "under the hood" cleaning video and LOVE how organized and easy to follow your videos are! Guys like you make guys like me confident to work on my car! THANK YOU! ❤
Thank you for this! I’m a repair tech for random equipment looking to buy an RV and work on it myself and having these concise videos and step by step diagnostics is a game changer!
Hey ChrisFix video ideas: How to replace a head gasket, how to replace a valve cover gasket and how to check a valve cover gasket, how to install an exhaust, how to change a wheel speed sensor, how to change battery terminals, and how to change manual transmission fluid(please do i have a 6-speed wrangler). Just some ideas!
ChrisFix hey I have a problem everytime I turn the key you will hear a clicking noise and it won't turn on but when I step on the gas pedal pumping it a couple times it will finally turn on what could it be
Hey Chris i love the videos! I didn't know anything about cars before i started watching your videos. I would love to see new videos on how to tune your car and make them go faster, for example turbos and stuff like that. Keep making those videos!
Thank you so much for providing troubleshooting a no start condition. I went down the checklist and narrowed it down to a bad relay located under the dash on my E30.
Closing in on 7M subscribers...good for you. You create great D.I.Y. how-to content that is like my drivers license...clean, clear, and valid. Keep it up.
since 2005 that ive been using youtube , this is the most explicit and well done video! straight to the point , no crap and nice video quality ! thanks for sharing ! greetings from Quebec!!!
What are the odds? My fucking starter died today. Luckily I was on a slope and I drive a car with a manual transmission so I just took off the parking brake threw on my hazzards and got some momentum before dropping the clutch. Started right up! Now to get a new starter...
Thanks so much Chris! I changed out my starter on my Ford Ranger because it was cranking slow, and this made a HUGE difference. It now cranks over like its brand new! It took me about 5 hours and this was my first starter replacement just to give you an idea of the time it takes.
I know, I did it on mine too and it took a while. Well worth it though for the assurance that your car will start. Also, when buying a starter get a new one with a lifetime warranty; its worth it.
I’m having the same issue with my Acura TL. It started cranking slow but still turned on but I just want to make sure I don’t get stuck anywhere so I bought a new starter and waiting for it to arrive so I can replace this old one.
ME-DIC! It is due to the design of the starter. As an electric motor under a lot of load, its design includes small brushes inside to allow a high current to flow. Those brushes are in contact with a special type of charcoal. When a starter is old, all the friction between the brushes and the carcoal begins to crush the charcoal and some powder is now floating inside the starter. This powder is magnetic and tends to make small clumps. When you smack the starter with a hammer, you dislodge them, allowing the motor to rotate again.
@@HearMeLearn yea, tell me about it, $120 per hour labor. The technician himself only gets $25 to $30 an hour. I get that the shop have overhead costs like rent, electricity, insurance, but damn... they'll make money from the labor and up selling you the parts.
DUDE!!!! Its 2021!! Who's utilizing this man's very skilled and user friendly approach, spot on instructions, perfect amount of detail and sped through like a bat out of hell!! Im speechless thank you!!!!
The starter on our 15 year old Volvo went out when I had to borrow it when I was 17. My sister assumed I took the Volvo for a joy ride, thus the reason why the car failed to start because it was "completely trouble free for the past 2 years she was driving it". Needless to say, it failed to start at the gas station and one of the attendants hit it with a hammer a few times while starting it which did the trip and got it home.
Detailed. To the point fix! All the BS is cut out! Thanks! I was quoted $580.00 for my Chevy Equinox starter! Plus towing costs. So I found this video. Saved me hundreds of dollars! Thanks Chrisfix!
I always go back to Chris, I have a 1996 Ford Ranger. Chris goes into detail, provides great video and the tools I need to do the job. Another fantastic video!
Me being dumb, I replaced the starter on a 2001 ford Taurus and did not wear safety glasses so I had some dirt and oil fall into my eye(which burned) when I was holding the starter above my head and I dropped it on my face. The good thing was I did not break anything but the next thing I did was to set the starter down and put on some safety glass from then on. TLDR-Wear safety glass
Chris , I so enjoy your videos because, they are clear and too the point, no added talk, no cursing, no music. Thank you so much for your help.

Pro-tip to all pro-tips:
Don't buy from Autozone or any other shit ass overpriced store.

Just wasted 130 for an alternator for this same reason, car was still stalling after replacing and I had already turned in my core.
I usually got good results with a junkyard OEM unit. Even if it didn't work I can swap parts off my old one and make a good one out of the pair.

the big auto companies probably hate that; planned obsolescence is part of their respective business models... but not the parts suppliers!

Thanks! I do my best to plan, film, and edit my videos so they cover as much as possible in as little time as possible.
I saw a guy in the side of the road who had car trouble. It wasn’t starting so I thought “Chris said to try and hit it with a hammer, let’s see if that works” and it did lol
Binge watching Chris Fix’s videos lol
Awesomeee

They go good with coffee in the morning
Chris thank you for the video, very helpful. Had to pick up my oldest niece after her trip and the car would not start. This has happened before and it was embarrassing. Thank god my wife was with me. Had my wife try to start the car while I taped on the starter. After a couple of try’s the car started. Thank you again brother
Awesome! Be sure to replace the starter ASAP
Absolutely the best mechanic!
24 Hour Autozone, damn I wish I had one of them

Where was this video 2 months ago when i needed it lol
lol. Well my starter went bad two months ago but I have been so busy I havent had time to fix it!
wow hahaha
Ken Mitchell there's million other videos about this in RUclips bro
Cheers!
Lmao the crap you find on the internet 😂
Jeremy Clarkson would be proud of you for using a hammer.
here is my story
thought the starter was fcked
but in reality the engine was seized
rip
Damn, thats bad m8.
Kanggoo LMAO 😂😂😂😂 that sucks!
ha my story is the opposite. I bought my truck for 500 bucks. they told me it's been sitting for a year and the engine was seized. I slapped on a new battery and a starter and it fired right up.
Can't imagine how happy you felt after lol
LMAO.. that's a bad story..
Duralast replacement starter. We're gonna be seeing a "How to replace your starter again" video in a couple months.
They count on people not ever bringing back shit that's broken.
ctuan13 had to get another battery and alternator for my truck went to O'Reilly's this time no more AutoZone
@Kermit of Rivia
Ur an idiot.. AutoZone Duralast are good batteries

I really like your videos. You always give good step by step instructions. And thanks for not cursing in the videos just like John said below. Lol.
Thanks a lot Zach!
Just saved money installing my starter on a 2014 Chrysler 200 was very tight spot but was able to accomplish it
I would just like to thank @ChrisFix for this video because without it I would still be stuck in a parking lot.
Part was free after warrantee. cheers.
Who else is watching Chrisfix and fixing their cars in quarantine?
Me! I’ve done a CV Axle, shocks, struts, sway bar links and tie rods while on quarantine! Chris has saved me thousands!
@@Dontez82 same bro he saved me a ton of money too!
If your car has broke im quarantine, you must be driving alfa romeo
warning for people doing this on ford trucks. this may apply to some to other vehicles as well.

Another great video from the blue gloves of wisdom. Thanks for this
Glad the video was helpful!
I'm not watching because I don't know how to do this. I'm watching because it's ChrisFix and it's just fun to watch
Thanks a lot!
I had my starter go out early January of 2018... replaced it myself in an hour in my driveway... next day, 4 inches of snow.
Haha the end of the video probably hits home then!
Great job. I subbed cuz your the first person that took the time to truly diagnose and explain what to look for. Man this will help me to get my truck back on the road. Much appreciated and keep up the good work.
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful!
Thank you Chris, broke living off grid trying to do everything I can myself, I estimated you just saved me about $300.
That money can now go towards things my son needs ❤️❤️
Ps Holden Rodeo 2001 4x4 diesel dual cab ( Isuzu) only has two locking bolts ( thank goodness as it was a total cow to get out )
I am so glad you made this video.
Your video is fun and enjoyable to watch. It also provides simple tricks about mechanic and electronic parts of a motor vehicle. Thanks for sharing.
Chris uses that torque wrench for almost every bolt.

The end was kool, when you're able to hear your truck start after working on it!!!
Just replaced the starter on my 07 Chevy Impala yesterday using this video. Thanks Chris!!
That would be awesome!
ChrisFix hey I have a problem everytime I turn the key you will hear a clicking noise and it won't turn on but when I step on the gas pedal pumping it a couple times it will finally turn on what could it be
you cant change battery terminals
watermelons he probably meant the cables that attach to the terminals
Install exhaust: Just uploaded
This is amazing. You just saved my butt and wallet. Thank you so much for the time and energy you must've put into this!
Hey Chris i love the videos! I didn't know anything about cars before i started watching your videos. I would love to see new videos on how to tune your car and make them go faster, for example turbos and stuff like that. Keep making those videos!
That is awesome and great idea!
Keep it up.
That brings back memories of having to hit the starter with a metal rod and a hammer on a friend's E30 320i in a McDonalds drive through 10 years ago.
Im only 3 minutes in the video and have learned so much!
Awesome! That is the goal!
ChrisFix Chris can u help me ? I asked u a question in the comment section would be great if u reply to it !!
since 2005 that ive been using youtube , this is the most explicit and well done video! straight to the point , no crap and nice video quality ! thanks for sharing ! greetings from Quebec!!!
What are the odds? My fucking starter died today. Luckily I was on a slope and I drive a car with a manual transmission so I just took off the parking brake threw on my hazzards and got some momentum before dropping the clutch. Started right up! Now to get a new starter...
xmodalloy one of the pros of having a manual
Thanks so much Chris! I changed out my starter on my Ford Ranger because it was cranking slow, and this made a HUGE difference. It now cranks over like its brand new! It took me about 5 hours and this was my first starter replacement just to give you an idea of the time it takes.
I know, I did it on mine too and it took a while. Well worth it though for the assurance that your car will start. Also, when buying a starter get a new one with a lifetime warranty; its worth it.
People don't realize that even if a starter is still working, it could still be bad and be cranking really slow and you don't even realize it.
I’m having the same issue with my Acura TL. It started cranking slow but still turned on but I just want to make sure I don’t get stuck anywhere so I bought a new starter and waiting for it to arrive so I can replace this old one.
thank god for your videos. I have literally learned everything i know about cars from your videos. thank you.
Well here I am, want to turn on my truck for school but now I’m stuck
Make video of practicing drifting on snow with driftstang.. :)

WHAT KIND OF SORCERY IS THIS??
Its like with kids back in the day. If they are bad you hit them and they behave better.
Lol those were the days. Smacking the TV to get a better picture, blowing the dirt out of game cartridges, etc etc.
It's the Clarkson way to fix things.
Nice. Appreciate the info.
alldislike are mechanics that have no customers because of chris
Hopefully that encourages them to stop scamming and have more reasonable prices
Sinus Lebastian not all of us scam, and prices aren’t our fault they are way to fucking expensive lol
@@HearMeLearn yea, tell me about it, $120 per hour labor. The technician himself only gets $25 to $30 an hour. I get that the shop have overhead costs like rent, electricity, insurance, but damn... they'll make money from the labor and up selling you the parts.
Sinus Lebastian it’s really the dealerships that are the real scammers
Lol yes
6:25 ah the beauty of percussive maintenance.
DUDE!!!!
I'm glad the video saved you money! Thanks a lot!
I wish i had seen this video a week ago, would have saved me like 35$ anyway, subscribed.
Man. You explain in good detail about fixing starter problems thank you.
Man Chris I feel so accomplished after fixing something from your videos thank you

98 Cherokee I’m doing it tomorrow. Glad I found another club XJ member here haha
Your Autozone is open 24 hours? You must live in a nicer area than I do.
not about being in a nice area, it's about getting enough business to warrant keeping the doors open past 10pm.
