Good on you for adding the tip on not putting you tools on top of the battery. This is very important, and the average person really doesn't understand what can happen. I was working on a side post battery a long time ago and started talking to my son while I was wrenching on the terminals, it distracted me for a second.. The wrench made contact with both terminals and welded itself to the terminals. I grabbed the wrench and broke it loose, and it was so hot all I could do was throw it away from the battery. This all happened in about a 3 second time frame. I feel lucky that it didn't blow. I've seen batteries blow up on people before, It's not a pretty sight. I'm reminded of this everytime I use that wrench, because it had a chunk missing out of the box end where it arced to the positive terminal.
Even for a very "basic" task like changing a battery, Chris managed to go beyond what I was expecting and show every nifty details of the process, explain the why and prove it himself. Great job on this one, amazing one, please keep it on!!

Something to note with battery group models is some have an R suffix. The R models have the positive and negative terminals reversed from the non-R. It's very important to verify your terminal placement.
One little note, when measuring voltage across the battery you should measure the voltage across the battery terminals as well to ensure there is good connectivity between bat terminals and the battery leads . Awesome video
I think you can also just measure resistance between the battery post and the terminal itself. It would be better to use a bonding meter so you can see the miliOhms but an ordinary multimeter will do. However, if a person has any doubt about the connection, it would be better to disconnect them and clean, clean, clean.....then reassemble and apply corrosion preventative compound.
Nice job... I know what Im doing but stubled on this video and checked it out anyway.... its good to see someone not just showing all the hows but why to do or not do something... covered all the basics and even other important things to be aware of.. all accurate and not done in a rediculously long or boring way.. Even covered parasitic draws and gave away all the little secrets on diagnosing it... dont forget about those who leave the cell phone chargers plugged in to always on lighter sockets.. thats a parasitic draw often forgotten. Great video.
Recently purchased a battery and they tacked on the installation kit without me saying anything. At first I thought it was just an up-sale to try and get more money out of me but glad to know it actually has a good use!
Omg this is literally PERFECT timing! My hummer didn’t start after a few weeks & struggles after a week-ish, so I figured something was up. Chrisfix always coming in clutch!!!
I’m grateful for you taking the time to make these videos. I would like to add a few items that were not included. You neglected to include the fuse panels that are inside the vehicle and that you will need to be able to access them so like disabling the hood open sensor you will also need to latch the door locking mechanism to disable the sensors. Don’t forget to return them to the unlocked position before closing the doors and the hood. One more thing is that the plastic cover that you mentioned that you like to replace over the terminal after installing the new battery sometimes includes a small plug attached to it that should be installed into the unused vent port on the new battery so that harmful liquid will not leak out causing damage and you should also attach a vent tube to the other vent port on the new battery and rout the other end down and out of the vehicle. I’m not criticizing you, just trying to help the people that are looking to you for guidance. Thank you for making these videos.

Love the videos as always, especially the amazing attention to detail and great content. But everyone here knows Chris Fix wouldn't actually have three dead cars, he's just that committed to teaching us 😂
Just a small tip... Sometimes the wheatstone bridge rectifier will go bad in an alternator which will allow a/c pulsed voltage to goto the battery. This pulse will eventually kill a battery. While testing your charging circuit, you should always check for a/c voltage on the line. Too many times I've seen batteries destroyed from a defective alternator diode. Also, if your cigarette lighter or other power accessory is always hot, like most FORD vehicles, then plug a small 12v battery or one of those 12v trickle charging battery maintainers in the accessory port when changing out the battery.
Great video! Some batteries are in even weirder places than the trunk or back seat. I drive a 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T, and the battery is in the drivers side front bumper/fender. In order to replace the battery, you have to jack up the car, take the wheel and inner fender liner off, and then change the battery. Plus, to make it even harder, they put the negative terminal at the far end so it’s almost impossible to get off without taking the positive side off first.
My uncle has a first gen Dodge Viper that he’s owned since new and the only way to access that battery is in the drivers side rear wheel well. There was a period about a decade ago when he left it sitting in the garage for over a year and my cousins tried to get it fired up, but the battery was dead. I’ll never forget that moment when I was walking up the driveway to my grandparents house (they live next door to each other) and seeing some guy from AAA removing the wheel off the thing, I was so confused and even more confused seeing him then open up a panel in there and pull out a battery.

There are like hundreds of Prophecies that Lord Jesus fulfilled, just look it up dear ones. God is our Father. He is the best of Fathers, the most lovable and merciful of Fathers. Before switching the batteries, it's best to clam the positive jumping cable to the alternator's positive post. That way you don't have to worry about accidentally knocking it off.
Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! As a novice, information like this, and especially your easy to follow and understand presentation, gives me confidence that I can maintain/diagnose general issues with my own vehicles. Thank you!
Thank you for making all these videos to help people. I used this one to mostly diagnose what my car's issue was, got a new battery, and was able to install it correctly thanks to your tips and instructions.
As someone who has been working a battery shop for over 10 years now I gotta say you explained everything perfect! Keep up the great work also I liked how you mentioned to never put your tool on top of the battery because it can arc I lost count of how many customers have tried to returned batterys because of melted posts
@10:27 it is also very important to check the manufacture date of the battery before buying. A lot of times batteries will sit and end up going bad. Try to get a battery that is maybe 1-3 months old if at all possible.
Great video with a couple of observations. First is, and I come across this quite often in my work, if you simple disconnect the battery then all driver settings including radio codes, channels, , mpg, seat settings etc are lost. OK, so he used another battery to acheive this although I would not reccomend this method as a few split seconds of disconnection could clear all the above !!.. You must always use a battery saver connected to your OBD connector or cigerrete lighter lighter socket BEFORE disconnecting the battery. Secondly, check the voltage between the battery post and the connected terminal because corrosion could mislead you. Finally, new cars can be fitted with battery management systems (aka BMW, Mercedes etc) so the new battery may not be recognised so the managment system treats the new battery as the old battery which can create issues ie: overcharging, undercharging etc.
Great video very informative. I'd also add that checking the battery's date is a good step 1 when considering whether its bad or just flat. Also if the voltage drops below about 9.5V while starting its also likely going bad. my golf 1 for example still starts fine but the other day it died when I switched on the high beams while driving. I suspected the alternator initially but the battery is 5 years old soooo😂
Your videos are just amazing. I always learn a lot, and especially appreciate the little nuggets of knowledge. For example, the hold-down that protects the battery from flying in a collision, why some batteries are placed in the back of the car, why to disconnect the negative first, etc. You always explain WHY and I really appreciate that! The troubleshooting steps are thorough. Thanks so much! I have an AGM battery that is only 3.5 years old. Last winter it struggled to start. I jumped it, and it seemed to have no problems the rest of the year. Now this winter, all of a sudden it has stopped working. I replaced the battery but am wondering why it went bad. The voltage was 11.33V (engine off). Let me know if you can think of any reasons. The new battery only has 12.3V (engine off), which seems kind of low for a new battery. The new battery is an AGM Diehard Platinum size H6. Appreciate any insight. Thanks!!

One little note, when measuring voltage across the battery you should measure the voltage across the battery terminals as well to ensure there is good connectivity between bat terminals and the battery leads . Awesome video
Thanks for the tip!
Hi Chris how can i replace my battery cable. The old cable is short. Thank you very much.
Or you could measure the voltage drop between wire terminal and terminal post.
@@rael5469 how would you measure it with a digital multimeter? would i just test the post and the terminal with it on voltage or which setting?

Hi Chris, my car battery was doing exactly what you said about one dead cell. I replaced my battery and everything is fine now. Thank you so much.

@@chrisfix thats not good! haha but chris, the master drive way mechanic, makes quick work of it! XD
In order to show how to patch a rusty hole on auto body, Chris cut a hole on his truck by torch, what a devotion.
My ex had a Chrysler Concorde and it was the same thing. Had to remove the right front wheel to change the battery.
As usual Cris, a well thought out video. Your videos are informative and you don't include stuff that doesn't pertain to the video. There's nothing worse then trying to research something and end up watching someone tell you everything except the information your looking for or to watch them remove 10 bolts, for example. Keep up the good work! Thanks

@Mike Studmuffin 12.6 volts
Thanks!!
