The comment ”god dammit that wants me to play guitar” is what the entire black album caused for so many people around the world🤘🏼

Heh. Or some of us that were already Metallica fans who played guitar and were surprised at how many of the songs on that album we could learn in an hour or so compared to previous albums you had to practice the songs for a week or so to get them down. The black album does have a great sound, and it overall is a great album. It was also very good live, but many of the songs were a lot easier to learn to play. :) EDIT: Regardless it was WAY better than St. Anger. Yet that can be said about ALL of their albums.

@@futurewavecs I'm of another opinion. Some people say Metallica went downhill from Load onwards, but I prefer to judge them per song. Sure, they're not the juggernaut they were in the beginning, but at least one song per album is genuinely great. St Anger is my favourite from the album, and Hardwired feels like a return to form, somewhat. We don't talk about Lulu.

I am 63 years old, and disabled. I can relate so much to the words of this song. I did all that was expected of me...college...I worked in an industry most consider too demanding of your time and life. And all the while my real passion in life was pushed to the back and I rarely ventured into it because of what I had to do to make a living.
Now that I have the time to pursue my passion, my physical problems make it difficult to follow what I really felt I should have been doing my whole life.
I would tell anyone who would listen, follow your passion...no matter what. It's really hard to forgive yourself in the end.

Damn bro. Big up to you for never forgetting about your passion.
But there's no need to live with regret. Many others followed their passions and regretted that too, so you can never know.
Speculation is good for nothing, what matters is now, and you seem to be making the most out of it.

Our disabilities give us wisdom... that is the goal in the end. How we get there is not always a pleasant experience and we are entitled to regrets in life... but don't let them be consuming. Coming from someone in a very similar boat my friend. We should always be thankful... I remind myself, that there is always someone worse off than me. There is a reason for everything that happens and we are not supposed to know why. Take care :)

Kirk Hammett gets flamed a lot by guitarists now. And yes, he's not the most technically proficient, gets a bit redundant, and relies too much on his wah pedal to cover some of the warts in his playing. But man, you can't deny so much of his solos are still phenomenally well written. This one in particular, no other solo could do there. None. It doesn't have to be the most skillful run of scales & arpeggios to be great, it just has to hit you in the chest and few solos do that better than The Unforgiven.

This song got me through a lot of dark years when I was a teen. My mom has narcissistic personality disorder with strong sadistic tendencies (not my google diagnosis, that was the conclusion of a psychiatrist with over 3 decades of experience with personality disorders). The hell she put me through is something I would never wish on my worst enemy. "This whipping boy done wrong" reminded me of all the times I was punished for anything bad my brother did; even if what he did was completely outside of my control, I would be blamed. And "Through constant pained disgrace, the young boy learns their rules"...my mom had so many arbitrary, and downright bizarre rules, all just another excuse to take out her rage on me, but I learned faster than she ever expected, though perhaps not the 'rules' she intended. I learned how to hide in plain sight, I learned to not trust anyone, and most importantly I learned how to survive. It's been over 20 years since I last spoke to her. She is my 'Unforgiven' and I have no regrets about going no contact with her.

When I was younger, I liked "Nothing else matters" the best of all Metallica songs. But as I grew older, I started liking The Unforgiven much better and now I consider this my favorite song by these guys.
The remaining two Unforgivens... Well, in my opinion are OK, but nothing more than that. Not even close to this...

Hetfield at his best lyrically. So much insight and passion. Love it. The song itself is also a masterpiece between the softer and harder parts. The guitar solo is perfect. Also like the Morricone-like guitar playing to. Lars may not be the greatest drummer but his drumming is perfect for this song. As it is for any Metallica song. Lars playing sets them apart from the crowd.
