I realized something just recently, Metallica especially, but thrash in general, pulls emotions from your body you can't put enough words to, I think people who deal with emotional and mental health issues benefited from being encouraged to use this music like a form of anger therapy, it was a healthy outlet for rage, pain, and just boredom, witch to someone who has issues focusing, and concentration, boredom is a slippery slope, moshing was litterly exercise. Intensely therapeutic. Grateful that music was the one thing my family was very open minded about, probably saved my life.

@@Jason-to5cs same hear brother , I'm 39 , and up until 7-8 months ago , I honestly don't know I could say I listened to a single one of their songs in the last 10+ previous years. From 11 years old until my early thru mid 20's they were absolutely hands down by far my favorite band of all time , I mean to the extent my room was decked out in their posters , practically all I wore was black jeans and Metallica t-shirts , and by the time I was 14, almost 15 , I was able to put on Kill'em'All from song.one and play through every last one of their songs , start to finish with what I believe was pretty good accuracy on guitar, and was not a song of their i couldn't and didn't always want to play along with all the way through to the ending of the final song from the " black album" , so back then its safe to say that Metallica was an enormous part of my every day life , though for reasons I'm still not totally aware of I just suddenly stopped listening to Metallica , and soon after just left my guitars and amps collecting dust , for well over a decade, and it wasn't until I accidently on youtube have a video of them playing creeping death live in Russia , randomly begin playing through RUclips auto-play, and it was then memories began flooding back to me , and I began not until into this current year (2022) that I "refound" Metallica and all of their music rhat was such an emormous part of my life in my younger years, and I began not only listening to all their old stuff on a daily binge style basis, and have fallen back in love with them all over again, quickly in just a couple months time all over again becoming not just my favorite band by far , but almost literally all I even listen to at this point once again, it having a deeper effect on me , more so than ever before , and began being moved and motivated in many aspects of my life all over again and not just that but I now appreciate and see more musical talent in their music than I ever before have. Its giving me both the long needed courage and motivation to begin trying to finally make a battle plan as to how to try to over come and rise above a few very troubling and difficult aspects of life that I've previously had not the know how or even fighting motivation in me to even attempting to make such necessary changes to begin to over come my problems. I owe that entirely to thier music , and also am able to only just now see the level of true genuine talent in all their music , which somehow I could not see the depth of until now , not even in my past as a very active musician myself. Refinding metallicas music , especially their first 5 albums is even pushing mw towards really really wanting badly to pick the guitar back up again , I'm so damned mad at myself now also for even putting the guitar down to begin with , wish I never let myself do such a thing , hoping Ill be able to relearn how to play such a large part of their entire catalogue once again as I once was so easily able to do , I listen to alotta their stuff today and am shocked when I think to myself constantly "how the hell was I able to play this so easily" lol. So I totally can see where you come from with your comment.

I doubt anyone will read this but, this song basically saved my life, I was going through some tough times. First my best friend died (grandpa), then both of my grandmas, and on top of everything I moved far away from my family and friends (Utah -> Texas)(I was also going into 6th grade). I was basically just trying to make it through life, but in 10th grade I started listening to music everyday and I came across Fade to Black and... it just saved me. The lines that saved me were, “
Things not what they used to be
    Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss, this can't be real
I cannot stand this hell I feel
    Emptiness is filling me
    To the point of agony
    Growing darkness, taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone
    No one but me
    Can save myself
    But it's too late
    Now I can't think
Think why I should even try”
    Thank you MetallicA

I've found some weird form of comfort in this song, i used to put it on when i felt absolutely misserable because the lyrics felt like they described perfectly what i felt at that time. I put it on regularly during a horrible period of my life, in which my granddad passed away, we were evicted from our house and i was doing horrible for school. My mother was also clinically depressed and stayed in bed all day while my older brother had struggles in his relationship. Meanwhile my dad worked NONSTOP to keep us financially afloat but since my granddad was his father he had it really tough and used work as a way to cope. Whenever i put on this song i went through an emotional rollercoaster and it got more intense as the song got more intense. The guitar is so full of emotion and it made me cry out and completly broke me. i often used a blade to cut myself during the solo as that was the height of the emotions, i hated myself and the song sort of encouraged me to do this, but i helped in a way. I'm not saying this to be edgy but the song really made me want to die, but the beauty of it also kept me from doing it. Sort of like "there's beauty like this to live for" My life has gone so much better since those dark times, mainly because of music. It became my reason to live and i'm a very happy person nowadays (minus the ocassional struggle ofc). I'm doing very well for college and should graduate next year normally. We also live in a new house and our building our very own in our free time. My granddad is still gone but i've given it a place and moved on. I haven't listened to this song since because it brings back a lot of the pain. So sorry to say this alex but i'm gonna watch the video muted and unmute whenever you say something. I'm excited about your reactions to "Trapped Under Ice" "Escape" "Creeping Death" and "The Call Of Ktulu", these last two are a gem, the last one, I recommend you close your eyes because it is an intrumentation, in which is based on the work of the succulent HP Lovecraft.
Some facts that I can give you about Fade To Black are:
-James wrote it because he had such a tragic moment, which was the theft of advanced instruments and equipment from him, in addition to the poverty he had to get other equipment, that is how James was inspired to create this iconic song.
-Cliff had a greater contribution here because the band sought to open new horizons and fields, combining Thrash with powerful ballads, knowing himself that Cliff has greater fluency due to his highly developed musical knowledge.
-This was the music that unfortunately woke up the pure metal people (true metalheads) negatively, starting by criticizing the band for looking for musical material with soft tones so that more listeners could get to know them and sell a lot of what they wanted, calling them that " sold out".
-This was one of Kirk's biggest contributions with his alone from him.
-This was the music that really made them change the way they played the music they wanted.
-That was also the gap that would give way to Metallica to find a way to be heard on radios around the world, and in which they obtained quite a few successful sales on their album, having a figure of more than 6 million copies ( which is equivalent to 6 platinum records).
-This album was the gap that Cliff would open to have a strong bond of friendship with James and help him work on his musical compositions, helping him first with the help of music theory (in addition to creating another band where they would work even more than James asked him).
    - In the time of the 90's, around 1992 to 1993 (one of those years) they had a tour called Wherever I May Roam Tour in which they were accompanied by the dangerous and beloved Guns N 'Roses on their Use Your Illusion tour , in which James was unfortunately cremated while playing this song, in which they diagnosed with a serious degree of two to three levels of damage caused by accidentally cremated, knowing that he could not continue with the show, Guns N 'Roses It caused serious problems and an immense and massive disturbance in the public, which caused and generated a kind of war between the authorities and the people, starting with; flipping cars, throwing Molotov cocktails, looting, robbing and destroying private property, all for the whims of how superb he is (it wasn't because he still is in lapses) Axel, by refusing to sing, since he and his band passed it by drugging himself and drinking alcohol massively with his producers and managers, for making himself the victim of the members of Metallica, beginning with his voice beginning to cause harm and discomfort.
My humble opinion, Ride The Lightning is the musical cusp (not technical because it clearly leads "... And Justice For All") where clearly Cliff Burton (rest in peace, one of the best bassists) handled all the lyrical and musical material, besides that he was the main cause of having internal fights with Lars and the friendship with the producers to make this work very memorable.

I can empathize with what James was feeling since I was diagnosed with Suicidal Thoughts and feeling about 4+ years ago. It’s a reassurance to know anyone can have those same feelings in living and never feeling alone like Alex said during his review.
Side Note: I loved playing it on Guitar Hero: Metallica (proud to say I can 5-star on expert at about 95%+ accuracy of the notes). The acoustic, second half and the ending solo makes it a complete masterpiece.

      Gonna copy paste my comment here since i understand what you feel. However for some this song helped for me it was a blessing and a curse;
So sorry for alex but i'm gonna watch the video muted and unmute whenever you say something. Idk if anyone even read this but if you do, thanks and remember, there is beauty in this world that's worth living for! much love!

Even after 40 years, the guys nearing their 60th birthdays, they are still the snot nosed teens from LA who are just surprised and grateful that someone likes their music... Some things never change. James is always going on about how without the audience, there would be no Metallica... And he often sings "you are Metallica" instead of "we are Metallica". This is outsider music, the songs are dark and depressing if you just read the lyrics, but in the same breath it is also a release for those negative feelings... Basically facing your demons and crushing them with the might of Metallica. James has also said that playing music kept him out of trouble. He was lost as a teenager, his father gone and mom dead for religious reasons. He had nowhere to turn to but music. And I'm sure some of them 50 beer nights would conjure up all sorts of feelings in him and his band mates... This is one impactful piece of art and has helped many cross that bridge and not jump off of it.

Death metal, prog, pop, melodeath, industrial and so on come and go but i always find my way back to some metallica song or live clip, sometimes after years of other types of music.

Keep in mind, they were in their early 20s in 1984 when this album came out. Makes it even more extraordinary. RIP Cliff, we miss you. 🤘💀🤘

    The best dark
ballad they have .. This song hits me every time I listen to it .. Never gets old
When I pick my guitar up I usually end up playing the opening riff every time.. It’s so addictive... METALLICA..!

In my mind this has always been a sort of sequel to Judas Priest’s “Beyond the Realms of Death” yep. Check it out.

I’ve always found comfort in this song and sanitarium .Metallica will always be my favorite band just due to the relatability of their music as well as the quality.call of the Ktulu will be another good instrumental from them!

Thats the thing with Metallica that sets them apart. They are imo the best all time at combining their individual instrument styles into one signature sound. They also have serious lyrics with deep meaning. Not many metal bands have that complete package.
