You guys will never know how important this song was to a whole generation. You guys are lucky enough to grow up in a time where mental health is taken seriously. My generation did not have that luxury. We were told we were too young to have real problems, we were too young to be depressed, and that we needed to just get over it. We were not heard. This song was instrumental in saving a lot of people. This song gave words to what some of us were feeling and let us know that we were not alone. A lot of people who hear this song for the first time think its sad and depressing because its about suicide, but to my generation, it was liberating. It gave us hope. It let us know we had allies and that at least 1 person out there knew what we were going through. I love seeing you guys getting into this kind of music and realizing its not just noise and that metal and rock has depth and meaning. Keep it up!!
Metallica has a few songs that got me through my depression in my 20's. This song was one of them. About 5 years ago, I crocheted a Stevie Nicks Duster sweater. It starts out white, going into gray and eventually black. I named the sweater Fade to Black.
This is a very important song to a lot of people. It gave words to something that many feel but couldn't articulate. Lots of music can change lives, but this one has saved them.

I recently learned that my grandfather's ship was pulled out of Pearl Harbor within a week before we were attacked though. They were pulling back in to the bay when they got word, and got sent straight back.

Much respect to you guys for appreciating the talent Metallica has, in my opinion the greatest metal band of all time. Thank you for the content, your reactions are great!
I find that with a lot of metal and punk music. People can not see beyond the LOUD. Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Megadeath, even Twisted Sister. These artists are masters of their medium. I love music, I will give anything a listen. I love when every time you listen to a really great song, you feel something more or different, identify somehow either on a personal level or an empathetic level.
I played this song constantly after the sudden death of a friend a long time ago. The 2nd verse is what hit me that hardest. If it weren't for Metallica and Fade to Black, I don't think I would have been able to grieve and release the rage and sadness trapped inside. I still think of my friend whenever I hear this song, and it still brings a tear to my eyes. RIP, Malaika. I love you.

I've always interpreted it this way. The solo is the man dying. The ever increasing drum beat is meant to represent his dying rapid heartbeat and then it just all fades away. I rate Fade to black as one of the great musical pieces.
Gotta disagree. Respectfully. That last solo feels like a man standing on the ledge with his heart racing as he prepares to jump and maybe, just maybe having a moment of clarity and fade out is his heart calming as he climbs down and goes home. Might not be what the band felt but it feels right to me.

You gentlemen did a really nice reaction to this song. It was nice to see y’all thump to Metallica. Old school Metallica got a lot of us through some very difficult times, and to see a younger generation listen and appreciate the music is really powerful. Thanks for doing this!
Fun Fact: This song was written about how they were feeling after most of their gear was stolen from their Uhaul. They didn't literally want to die, but obviously they were depressed about it and wanted to "die" figuratively. Like, how if you've had a shit day and you're like "Ugh, I just wanna die". 🤘🤘
"I have lost the will to live". Sometimes it's not about wanting to die, it's the struggle of finding a reason for still being here. This feeling is harder to see in someone, don't underestimate some one that would confess this to you. He will seem fine, smiling, helpful one day...but will disapear the next with seemingly no reason...
This song happened to be playing when I had the barrel of a gun in my mouth at 17 years of age. It saved my life. Please understand how impactful this song is.
Just want to add to all the comments about how this song helped them through a dark time because it made them feel they weren't alone, and I very much relate to that...but they did something more than that. Even though there's no "happy ending" with the lyrics, the song itself is a triumph, because they channeled that pain into creating something beautiful and and powerful! And THAT is what helped them, and all of us who love this song, live to face, fight, embrace another day.
I first heard this song in 1985 and have since revered it as the greatest song in the history of recorded music. I really enjoyed watching you guys become enlightened by it. You can't fake the looks on your faces, throughout, which tells you really took true meaning from it, as so many have over the years. Rock on!
Those lyrics 'I was me but now he's gone' thats the line that always got me and I connected with when I was younger. When I struggle with depression I am not me. I am not the person I was meant to be. Metallica were more than just metal aye! They were something you could FEEL.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on this platform, bar none!!! I love how genuine your reactions are to these songs. It brings me right back to my childhood when I was experiencing these songs for the first time myself. Keep up the good work boys! This video made my day! Thank you very much!
Metallica - heavy songs to check out: 'Seek & destroy'... 'For whom the bell tolls'... 'Disposable heroes'... 'Blackened'... 'Sad but true'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 More laid back songs: 'Welcome home (Sanitarium)'... 'Bleeding me'... 'Hero of the day'... 'The god that failed'
Orion, Sanitarium, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Dyers Eve, Disposable heroes, Spit out the Bone, St. Anger, All Nightmare Long, Damage Inc., Battery, The Shortest Straw, And Justice for All, Dirty Window, St. Anger Live
This song reaches the absolute height of its powers when you watch a depression / suicide survivor listen to the lyrics of this song. That reaction is out there. It's powerful
It's songs like this , and especially this one , that keeps me alive as I suffer from deep depression through most of my life. It makes you know you are not alone and it's a great comfort to me through dark times. Thank you for also appreciating this masterpiece :)
I'm loving your reactions to Metallica! I'm an 80's kid and Metallica was a staple back then and these songs bring back so many memories and the lyrics are still relevant today. Here are some you need to listen to: Four Horsemen The Day That Never Comes Sanatarium One For Whom the Bell Tolls Leper Messiah Sad But True Don't Tread on Me Go with these and enjoy! You won't be disappointed.
Metal in general is rooted in classical music. Hence the complicated arrangements, change-ups, interesting time-signatures, etc. Two of the most powerfully moving styles of music ever.
I've been a Metallica fan for over 30 years. This is by far my favorite song of their's. This song is more powerful than you could ever imagine. You guys keep up the great work, love your reactions.
I like watching these guys because they personalities are different. Hits different when ppl understand or appreciate the skill of instruments and deep lyrics that were real.
My brother in law took his own life after battling schizophrenia for 20years literally a week ago. This song takes an entirely new meaning if you've had someone you love kill themselves. I sit here typing this with tears streaming down my cheeks thinking of the pain and emptiness he felt. When he would get into a manic state he would disappear and another person would be there in front of your eyes. The line "I was me, but now he's gone" hits so hard for me right now. I know this song means different things to different people, but the attitude of the dude in the Sox hat is coming across as disrespectful to those who lost their battles, to be taking it so lightly. I pray he doesn't have this happen to someone in his life so he can continue to happily enjoy this masterpiece. Someday I will too, but that day is not today as I sit heavy in my emotions for my brother in law.
It’s not hard to like Metallica and to know they are one of the very best. All you have to do is listen to them, and you will know. It’s undeniable. \m/
Dire Straits , guys! And their hit song, Sultans of Swing… their ALCHEMY Live performance. It HAS to be the ALCHEMY live performance. One of the best live performances you will ever see. The drumming and guitar work is incredible. PLEASE react to it🙏🏻. Thanks!
What Danielle said! And . . . that guitar solo outro at the end is my 2nd favorite guitar solo 🎸ever!!! 🤘🏼I grew up with this old school, early Metallica. It helped a ton of kids from my generation express their rage and angst. James Hetfield IS a lyrical genius and an amazing composer of GORGEOUS,, melancholy, expressive melodies! 🔥
You guys nailed it. Guitar solos are the ultimate white boy fire shit. If my windows are down and my music is blaring, it’s gonna be a sick guitar solo and this is one of the very best. My favorite guitar solo, personally, up there with Freebird.
I was fortunate enough to have been a teen in the late 80s early 90s and I always felt sorry for young adults these days missing out on something so powerful. It’s amazing to watch you young men discover these stellar bands and feel the music the way those of us who grew up with them still do. My 14yo son recently I introduced him to Metallica, GNR , Stevie Ray, Ozzy, Van Halen, which inspired him to pick up guitar and discover his natural God given talent. In 3 months he’s taught himself from listening to all these bands. He summed it up perfectly when he said, “Mom, listening to and playing this music just makes me feel something idk the word for but nothing else feels this good”
Did you introduce your kid to stevie ray or steamie ray? (South park joke) lol but yeah good times to discover music on the radio and go down the rabbit hole of your favorite band's discography...ps love SRV how good is marry had a little lamb? Pps riviera paradise is probably my all time favorite
I remember when I was like 14 they came to Sacramento but of course I couldn’t afford to go. 98 rock played every Metallica song all day from a to z. Getting drunk and listening to Metallica will always be a nostalgic thing for me!
i love watching people listen to music theyve not heard of. it makes me happy to see people step outside of their comfort zones and actually take it in from the pov of a listener
I have a feeling that you guys didn't feel the song, this shit makes me so emotional. I know it's lame for a guy to admit that, but man this song is emotional rollercoaster. All the memories, the fights and losses flashes before your eyes. That's why this is masterpiece.
May 10,1987 my boyfriend, I was 18, Mother’s Day he made me listen to every word & im a Metallica fan. He said I’ll see ya later, left & hung him self. Mental health is very real
the beauty of most Metallica songs is at first you get caught up in the instrumental part of the song. once your over that and you hear the song again and again, you start to understand and appreciate the lyrics. This song in particular holds great meaning for me as a survivor of attempted suicide. Glad to hear other starting to appreciate it. keep it up guys.
The first time this song really hit me was in 1989 In Canton Texas. I was 13 and buried my best friend who was 16 that died in a freak accident. We were all outcast kids who liked Metal music and skateboarding. I will never forget Michael Jason Woods, He always felt his life would be short and nobody loved him. But instead of suicide God took him in another way so he wouldn't have to suffer as an adult. Thank you for not disrespecting this song or his unbeknownst to you his memory.
deserved to be among the god-tier. But Nothing tops the outro to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Widely regarded as the greatest ever - especially the live Pulse 94. Which I totally agree.
@@Frostrazor amazing live track, and amazing solo outro, i love it. But for me, kirk isnt the best guitars players, but he made the best fastes, heavies and melodics solos of all time.
@@Frostrazor we are talking in the top of music, pink floyd is one of the greatest pop-rock bands ever, imo. But metallica is the greatest band of trash-heavy-hardrock ever for me, i love this guys.
Whenever I listen to this song it just gives me the chills. It's a masterpiece with a deep meaning. Please, guys react to Metallica- The day that never comes. Thats another absolute masterpiece. You guys are cool!
I listened to metallica since I was 8 years old. It was 1987 when I was 8. I never knew what all of their songs were about. I just loved the way their music sounded. You all can post literally the perfect video, know exactly what the song is about, and people will still bitch about something. They will. "Why is his hat backwards!?" Just ignore the negative comments.
Used to go to sleep to this. Still gives me such a vibe. Omg LOL I was vibing with eyes closed for a time, then opened to see buddy holding 2 fire extinguishers. Choked on my snack.

Aye man dude on the right in the blue cap..man 10:50-10:55 I never thought id hear u say that after watching u say u ain't for Metallica..im so glad yall gave them the chance to change your mind, there ISSSSS a rock god!
5:27 for some of the best analysis I’ve seen from hours of watching this channel. I grew up listening to this and similar music yet I was never able to articulate “The Why” of this particular aspect of the emotional catharsis the music gives us. Bravo, many thanks, and keep enjoying yourselves, gentlemen.
Y'all dudes having the SAME feelings I did the firs time I've heard this song at 1998. I've had no friends at that time and school was the hell on earth. I was constantly getting it trouble, real fighting and had a mother with mental health issues (Thank's God she is still alive and now I'm taking care of my parents) Life was hard since then. now days is even harder to have peace to work and this music still have a true meaning to me now-days. the instrumental of this song gives e strength to wake up everyday. You don't know how it's good to see y'all getting the right message. Here in Brazil people constantly see heavy/thrash metal as drug addicted music, Satan's music at all, just because heavy guitars are way to noisy, hahahaha. I'm gld to see the you are keeping the good flame alight! ad you've just won a sub (I know 01 isn't too much) and y'all get my respect. P.S. forgive my bad english and... cheers from Brazil!
Dude with the blue cap on gets it......they're very powerful and deep, but you have just scratched the surface......keep exploring their early work.....they are masterpieces!!.......NEXT LEVEL SHIT!!!
You guys were saying how you didn’t understand the meaning of the last song you reacted to but that’s the thing I love about rock from the 60s-early 2000s. A lot of the time, lyrics were written in riddles like abstract poems and the meaning wasn’t always straightforward like in modern music. I love modern music as well, but I appreciate older music for the way that songwriters were able to convey feelings and concepts in such a deep, avant-garde way. They said things like “despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage” when they could’ve simply said “I can be angry all I want but it won’t change the position I’m in”. These days it’s “Percocet Molly Percocet”. It’s definitely catchy but lyricism doesn’t seem to be a priority in music as much these days
I saw Metallica at Monsters of Rock at the Liberty bowl.....one hell of a day.....my kids , especially when they were in high school were always trippin because I listened to metal.....still do....five finger death punch, avenged sevenfold among others.....at the grand age of 56.....
got a sub out of me. I Really appreciate you guys actually trying to listen and process the music which can be very hard to do with Metallica. I get sick of watching reactors do it just for the money and just listen and end the video but you guys are listening, trying to pay attention, AND you're fun. Nice job.
Man, it’s so damn cool to see a new generation appreciate these guys. I still get chills to these songs. Now go react to some rage against the machine(killing in the name of) but clear out your living room first so you can start a little mosh pit… I’ll definitely watch that

This is why Metallica crosses boundaries...These guys are completely oblivious to the lyrics which resonate with an entire generation of disgruntled youths..but they love the music...magic
Metallica helped me through a very difficult mental period. The lyrics of so many songs are so recognizable that I felt understood. Linkin Park is also a band that has that effect on people like me. please also listen to Linkin Park songs. Enjoy life and talk with specialist people about your mental problems ❤
As a youth AC/DC and Metallica were my favorite bands. I'm a big fan of anything Metallica did after Burton died. I could go into all the ways and reasons I think they sold out their fans but those of us that helped Puppets go platinum understand. I digress, comparing the two is not possible because Metallica had a message, AC/DC never did, they are all about, "this is the shit I love doing, make some noise!"
Enjoy watching your videos. I'm happy to so those UL shirts too, grew up in area and went to school there when it was USL in the early 90s (Good Times). Keep representing the area in a great way! I see from your reactions that you enjoy kick ass guitar playing, as a guitar player for over 35 years myself, may I recommend Dire Straits Sultan's of Swing - unique playing with style of play and melody.

It's amazing how many different riffs they could shove into a song and make it work.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on this platform, bar none!!! I love how genuine your reactions are to these songs. It brings me right back to my childhood when I was experiencing these songs for the first time myself. Keep up the good work boys! This video made my day! Thank you very much!
Metallica - heavy songs to check out:
'Seek & destroy'... 'For whom the bell tolls'... 'Disposable heroes'... 'Blackened'... 'Sad but true'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
More laid back songs:
'Welcome home (Sanitarium)'... 'Bleeding me'... 'Hero of the day'... 'The god that failed'
Facts definitely check out with lyrics too!
Nah. Nah. YES! Yes! Eh.
More laid back songs: YES! maybe? eh. eh.
Until it sleeps and the Unforgiven trio of songs needs to be reacted to! Bangers!
Disposable Heroes FTW! And Blackened
This song meant so much to me as a young teen. I still love it today.
So cool to see people discovering stuff that I have loved for years and getting to relive the feeling of hearing it the first time
I love seeing the younger generations giving music from earlier times a try and a surprising amount of them end up really enjoying it. 👍
You are correct sir! That solo was RIDICULOUS!
I'm loving your reactions to Metallica! I'm an 80's kid and Metallica was a staple back then and these songs bring back so many memories and the lyrics are still relevant today. Here are some you need to listen to:
Four Horsemen
The Day That Never Comes
Sanatarium
One
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Leper Messiah
Sad But True
Don't Tread on Me
Go with these and enjoy! You won't be disappointed.
As a white lady metal head from bumfuck Indiana, I really do love hearing your reactions to these songs. It’s both funny and heartwarming. ❤️
Those who do it well, make it seem rooted in classical music.
I love watching people experience classic Metallica for the first time. One of the most important bands of all time.
It’s not hard to like Metallica and to know they are one of the very best. All you have to do is listen to them, and you will know. It’s undeniable. \m/
Metallica one of my fav bands to listen to coming from a rap fan.. i like to listen to a lot of genres of music
My favorite Metallica song I'm so happy y'all enjoyed it ✌️
You guys nailed it.
He summed it up perfectly when he said, “Mom, listening to and playing this music just makes me feel something idk the word for but nothing else feels this good”
I was a kid in the 80’s, I literally discovered rock by playing with an am fm radio.
I have added your Metallica reactions to my morning routine because it just fires me up for the day. Let’s go!
Metallica "one" is their best song. Pretty sure that was the 1st time the double kick bass drum was heard.
That’s not even the first time Metallica used double bass drums… Motörheads “overkill” even had double bass drums and that was 1979
It was definitely not the first time. As another guy said, Motörhead used it years before. But maybe the first time it was used so purposefully.
Theres double kick in Fade to Black. Lol
80s Metallica may be the best music ever made
Slayer kicks Metallica and Maidens ass lol 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I have a feeling that you guys didn't feel the song, this shit makes me so emotional. I know it's lame for a guy to admit that, but man this song is emotional rollercoaster. All the memories, the fights and losses flashes before your eyes. That's why this is masterpiece.
This song has reduced me to tears more than once…
I thought they understood, maybe you were not paying attention.
I have such a powerful connection with this song and that switch up always sends chills down my spine
Watching your videos always makes a sh*tty day much better, keep headbanging with the best of em. All 5 of yous are fkn great man, hilarious.
We're glad you are here.♥️
The first time this song really hit me was in 1989 In Canton Texas.
I still think one of the best solos off all time was in Maiden's Caught Somewhere in Time.. ^_^
the best one ever
deserved to be among the god-tier.
The guy in the flower hat was really having a moment with this song and I fucking loved every bit of it
Metallica fan for decades here. I am so glad I found this channel haha
They are just as good in concert. You can see their concert online They’re so great my favorite band too
Used to go to sleep to this. Still gives me such a vibe.
Omg LOL I was vibing with eyes closed for a time, then opened to see buddy holding 2 fire extinguishers. Choked on my snack.
I'm 52, fan since 1984, Metallica will ALWAYS take you to church
such a banger!!! METALLICA has some absolute classics
And I still cry everytime I listen to this song 😭🖤🔥
I’m obsessed with the little bit of head banging I see! That means you’re feeling the music! Awesome content guys! Thank you again for staying open minded!
I want to thank you guys for listening to and hearing this music. The crazy thing is that they are even better live.
Aye man dude on the right in the blue cap..man 10:50-10:55 I never thought id hear u say that after watching u say u ain't for Metallica..im so glad yall gave them the chance to change your mind, there ISSSSS a rock god!
Back when music was the only thing that seemed to understand your emotions. This song, Creeping Death and Master Of Puppets are my favs.
Top 1. Facts. So glad yall was digging it. We grew up to this stuff. 30 years later still rocking Metallica. Always n 4ever.
This song saved alot of lives in rock community.
This song is a staple of my childhood!! I would fall asleep to it blaring at my dads house @ 2am !! Just like I’m doing it now as a 33 y/o
Brother on the right is the inteligent one. He's the most criticle and anylizes Everything.
Heard hetfield say in interview this is his favorite Metallica song. Mine too. Great reaction boys 🤘🏽
My fav Metallica song that guitar solo at the end i still love it
This song was my most played metallica song this year
You guys were saying how you didn’t understand the meaning of the last song you reacted to but that’s the thing I love about rock from the 60s-early 2000s.
Nice post
Now go react to some rage against the machine(killing in the name of) but clear out your living room first so you can start a little mosh pit… I’ll definitely watch that
Takes me back to my youth, I think I was in 4th grade when this came out and I got the tape. My friends and I were cranking it up and just letting it melt our faces
This song is very deep. I think anyone who has struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts can relate to this
The 1st time I heard this song is when I was on deployment to the far east when I was in the Marine Corps. Such a powerful song.
I thought the guy in the blue hat was going to cry before they paused it during the guitar solo. He's definitely feeling this song
If you listen to this with a good sound system, you'd hear every hit of the drums. It'll take your breathe away.
I'm a musician and I love to play this song.
This is the best Metallica ever wrote. Still and forever will be my favourite song of theirs
liked, subbed and commented bc of this song specifically. great videos, guys.
Went to a heilung concert and took my first real dose of mushrooms. Made a grown ass man cry. Havnt had that transcendant of an experiance since I held my daughter for the first time. Truly moved and life changing. song is called OTHAN. Not in english but doesnt matter. Its the feeling. Love you guys
im an old Metallica fan they save me from my youth from the crazy shit that was going on in my head you guys need to listen hard and you will understand but happy you guys a enjoying this METAL RULES DONT YOU GUYS FOR GET THAT
I love watching you guys get into metal!!
This is why Metallica crosses boundaries...These guys are completely oblivious to the lyrics which resonate with an entire generation of disgruntled youths..but they love the music...magic
"Oh my God it's still going." You guys are the best.
holy crap ,long souvenir for me ,i was listening this song on 4 track cassette in 1986 in the snow
Metallica helped me through a very difficult mental period. The lyrics of so many songs are so recognizable that I felt understood. Linkin Park is also a band that has that effect on people like me. please also listen to Linkin Park songs. Enjoy life and talk with specialist people about your mental problems
❤
