This song saved my life. I was dealing with parental divorce, and I was dealing with the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse by an outside individual. Suicidal thoughts filled my head. I would lay in bed in the dark, listen to this song, and just cry. 34 years later, it still makes me cry. Epic song.
I am so sorry you were a victim of child abuse, but I am proud of you for being a survivor of it! It takes guts to speak those words publicly. I work with an organization that supports child abuse victims to help them become survivors. You do the world a favour by even speaking out against it and sharing your story. Much respect 👊
Glad your still with us, I share your experience minus the sexual abuse. I struggled with suicide for a long time and attempted it once. Now I am a proud father and grandfather. I'm happy we both survived it, I still get super emotional listening to this song.

Thanks Beth for analysing this song. To me means death and rebirth. I played it during the most obscure moments of my life (and this is one of those). James is my therapist, no one knew me better than him and if I'm still here and fighting hard is because of his inspiration. Thanks for appreciating Metallica, they're not just a metal band. To me, they're a fountain of life.
With this song I discovered Metallica in 2012. I'm 26 and I can say that Metallica and especially Fade to Black, have changed my life. In my worst moments; failed relationships, bad at school, bad physically and mentally and in moments of unemployment. Today I am in one of my best versions in total and with people who are worth every tangible time in this reality. It is worth living every minute and it is worth more, listening to Fade To Black to gain momentum and move forward. I did it, you too. Metallica forever!!!!
I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 54 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...
I've seen them live 10 times over the course of 35 years, and going to see them live again in the summer of '25. Best band of all time, especially their live performances! The concerts have an energy that words cannot describe.
Metallica live is unexplainable experience. I got to go one of the “Big Four” shows in Southern CA. All the bands were great but Metallica’s energy was unmatched . I’m looking to seeing them in Houston in 25’
I was 20 years old when this song was released. It saved a lot of people. Back then you didn't admit you had depression and anxiety, you were too scared that you'd be sent off to a psych ward never to see the light of day again.
The original recording (and early live recordings of the song) is in B minor, but they nowadays tune down half a step to accommodate changes in Hetfield's voice.
@@Salomon_G Yep. I think it was because of the way they created the tolling bell sound on For Whom the Bell Tolls that would've been out of tune with the music.

I’m just amazed on how many young people like Metallica today in 2024, considering I been a fan of Metallica for passport years. They are the only true heavy metal band to reach this sort of success and it’s because of their songs like this.
The reason for the switch from B Minor to B Major I'm glad you picked up on. Metallica has always been great in putting emotion into their songwriting. The Minor sections are a reflection of the depression experienced at the time, and the Major at what appeared to be the solution to the problem at the time. This song is incredible and because so many people could relate to it it saved lives.

I have been following The four Horsemen for 40 years and this song just gets better with time. Like Sanitarium, One, Ride the Lightning and of course the colossal metal tune ever Master of Puppets. Welcome to the Metallica Family

Great reaction. The Ride The Lightning album was my introduction Metallica when it first came out. I was 13. I still have an original release cassette. The song was inspired by James' amp getting stolen that given to him by his mom who died of cancer. They got alot of crap about this song when it came out. @BethRoars Hi, this is not what I expected. Thank you for the reaction. I am Dutch, when I heard the song for the first time, I was maybe 10 years old, when my brother bought a CD. Not that good in English, it was the sound. The song was cool because of the music. But, the lyrics came later, when I was 18 years old and my life was one big chaos. And it never faded away since then. I understand that you knew the message in the song, but in the closing lyrics you paid alot of attention to the music. I do not blame you, that guitar playing is awesome! I even humm that part when I am bored. I have to look for your videos, haven't seen that much in my feed lately. If I may suggest a band... Try 'Pro-Pain' once. They are a special sound. A heavy metal band, with a strange voice. If you are into a deep dive, try them. I can propose a (starters) song if you are interested.
Since "Ride the Lightning" came out this has always been one of my top 5 songs at any given time. Glad you have discovered this. Give " Welcome Home Sanitarium" also from Metallica a listen, another one of their best in my opinion.

If anyone’s interested- The best Fade to Black Live is from Nimes 2009
If there is a song to play at my funeral it’s this one.
The outro is a masterpiece. After the goodbye in the lyrics the drums acts as the pulse, increasing towards the end… until it stops!
Masterpiece!
Since "Ride the Lightning" came out this has always been one of my top 5 songs at any given time. Glad you have discovered this. Give " Welcome Home Sanitarium" also from Metallica a listen, another one of their best in my opinion.
I just seen them in Seattle! They tore that place apart! Epic show!
metal means : culture , power , metal in my blood🤘🤘🤘
for me Seatle and Moscow version are special. RIP James' Marshall amp
Fade to guitar solo - beautiful
That music and Metallica save my life. Those were very difficult years for people in Europe...First of all, I'm thinking of people who lived in ex-Yugoslavia.
Metallica is the greatest Metal Band of all time. Great live performance, and killer albums.
Can we please talk about how beautiful and intricate Metallica’s guitar parts are? They just add layer upon layer. The initial vocals are so much lighter than the studio version.
should have done the studio version beth, the acoustic is just beautiful
One of the best songs ever writen. Like almost every song by metallica
Beth's face on Kirk's solo @6:16 is so GREAT!
One of the greatest songs ever written
This song gets me every single time
This was epic Beth ❤
your facial expressions between 10:50 and 11:20 tell me just how much you've been moved by this brilliant song by Metallica
Metallica, one of the few bands whose lyrics and guitar riffs seem larger than life.
