As a metal enthusiast, I love your channel, Beth. It's fun to watch you explore the genre a bit. I HIGHLY recommend making a video of Candlemass with their singer Messiah Marcolin. He's simply a legend. Sort of like a metal opera singer. Definitely a unique talent. I'd love to hear your analysis.

One of the great things about Tom Araya's vocals is that he is generally VERY clear and understandable, despite the speed of the music. I really enjoyed this reaction/analysis; now please do Angel of Death; you'll end up talking about the opening vocal for like 8 minutes. :D

seeing slayer always brings a smile to my face, and fun fact: in one of their last shows here in Brazil, they were playing War ensemble and the sound of the place just shut off in the middle of the song, the only thing making sound was the drums (but only the acoustic sound), the people in the pit begin to sing out loud from there to the end, and you could see Araya happiness to see the people finishing the song for him

I'm a huge extreme metal fan, especially death metal and thrash metal. I got this on cassette as an Xmas gift from my grandparents back in high school (I graduated in 1988), hearing your critique on this is such a great experience. I've found a lot of folks with musical backgrounds like you are actually less judgemental about this music. I had a co-worker at one shop that would actually react to my music a lot like you do, she was more interested in their techniques than giving me those evil looks I'm so used to! She genuinely liked Death (my favorite band), and VoiVod (although I don't consider VoidVod extreme, some of their older stuff is more thrash like), and was a joy to discuss music with.
Love the channel, and love seeing you cover music like this!

I used to listen to metal (mostly mainstream) with little or no thrash. Tried death metal and could never get into it. Over time my tastes have migrated to more funk/r&b/hip-hop but I always find myself appreciating the musicianship of thrash. I recall watching Dark and listening to Kreator Pleasure to Kill. It evoked such a visceral emotion of dislike and hate in me but when I gave it a second listen I loved the speed and precision of the drums (the video is utterly bonkers though)

He has interesting vocals; they create an eerie atmosphere and build, and use interesting chords and melodies and progressions and time changes. As someone mentioned, what’s great is his lyrics are clear, which is difficult to do in thrash. If you didn’t completely listen to Tori Amos’ cover, you should. It’s excellent, and SO different from the original, which is also difficult to do well, in a totally different style.

Holy crap, a vocal coach that gets Tom! Slayer fans have always gotten it, but not everyone does. Guess that's why it's awesome. 😉

I didn't know that about Tom Araya being a respiratory therapist before going full time with Slayer. Thats hilarious!

If you react to Slayer live check out videos before 2009,, when Tom Araya could still headbang,,, he had a neck surgery from headbanging and couldn't headbang any more,,.. Listen to Bloodline from the War at the Warfield Live,, and Mandatory Suicide from the Still Reigning live..

I am, or used to be a stutterer. Respitory therapy was far more useful to me than usual logopedics. My therapist was a retired opera singer who taught stutterers the use of the force of their diaphragms.
And it did learn me some basics about vocal strengths as well.
Since I'm a soft-spoken low key voiced kinda person. I used to have difficulty raising my voice, well, not anymore. 😂
Although that doesn't make me a good metal vocalist. 😅

I feel like you have to see a live Reign in Blood performance when they actually rain in blood. They typically rain blood as they play this song it’s usually a finisher to their set haha.

Thanks your analysis was very inspirational even I have listened Slayer decades. I respect your opinion because I often hear disrespect for Metal music: "It's just senless noise and growl without purpose" It's unfortunately hard and frustrating tryto explain to others what's it all about. Especially when you love Metal music so passionately. 🖤

Beth, I know you're a vocal analyst but surely at least a tip of the hat to Dave Lombardo on drums! The rhythmic changes he brings through his feet I believe, and I'm no expert, take this song to the epic status that it holds.

This is one of the most chaotic and iconic metal songs. Slayer fans are some of the most crazy and pationate. Slayer are not just a musical group, they are a lifestyle. Raper Ice-T and his hard rock band Body Count did a cover of this song. Love that you reacted to this. Slayer can be tough to get in to for some. They are not known for melodic songs.

Love Slayer, so of course I was gonna come see this reaction... but.. to be honest, I initially thought that was Weird Al Yankovic in the preview thumbnail and definitely wanted to see him performing the song.....
